HI
I'm facing follwing isssue.
I'm the owner of DVP,
I have last backup from August 2011
few weeks ago my phone was broken,
Dell repleaced this with a new one...
how to restore the backup on this new DELL ?
i tried simply copying backup to the restore point but no luck ...
zune can see the restore point but is unable to restore the data...
I have very important SMS messages in the backup which I need...
is there the option to load it or maybe the option to open the backup on PC ?
P
You can't restore a previous backup to a new phone; you can only restore it to the same hardware you backed up.
If you lose your phone or suffer hardware failure, all your SMS and app save data is gone; sorry. Crazily, device backup is a feature Microsoft believes isn't needed in WP7; if you diagree and feel your data is important to you, vote for the feature at WP7 User voice.

Unfortunately, if you performed the backup via Zune, the files are linked to the old device id... If I remember well, I read that they're encripted using this value,
so you can't restore them into another device...
Looking at what you wrote, I don't think you made a backup of your sms with the application you can find in this forum, and then saved them using something like WPV app data backup. In this last case you get back your sms...
Those Acer phone are usually pretty good, wanted to buy one of these too, but decided to go with another model instead. I think it's a very good buy at that price!

Hello All...
I've searched high and low, googled till my finger tips are worn. I did a complete backup of my At&t tilt using the included sprite backup software, after clearing the storage and reinstalling WM6.1 I attempted to restore "email" and "pim" via my backup. Roughly 2 hours passed till the restore finished, but when I attempted to access my messages the message folder will not open. I tried restoring the complete backup and that didn't work (still no messages), I tried everything seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529023. I cannot seem to get my messages back even though the cemail.vol file is intact. Is there anything I can do? I need help!
P.S. - when I try to do a backup using PIMBackup 2.8 after restoring everything via sprite, PIMBackup tells me that no messages were found.
i bet ur smss r gone, u should have used pimbackup in the first place.
anyway, look at the bright side... u r on a clean start now!! and really, whats the purpose of storing smss several days/weeks/months old?

A clean slate would be great, if I didn't have important business notes. Anyone
Hi guys
I recently factory restored my HTC Desire and the built-in backup prompted me to restore my settings, which I did, but for some reason my SMS messages were not restored.
I checked the SD card, and there is a backup there, but of course the files are encrypted. Is there any way to read these files, or to restore my messaging SMS?
Thanks in advance!
Am I right in saying that the backups's hashes are salted with the device serial #? If that's the case then decryption should be quite possible.
I have had the exact same problem today. Had to return my Desire as it was faulty for a straight swap (kept the same SIM and SD card). The SD card has restored all contacts and music, but SMS messages have not transferred over. I've looked at every possible option in the settings but can't seem to see how to do this.
I'd be grateful for any advice or info. Thankyou.
slightly old thread, but relevant to my problem....
have been playing around a lot with my desire over the past week, and managed to delete the wrong nandroid backup and lost all my sms. I have a sense auto backup form a day or so earlier, but cannot for the life of me get the phone to read these - there's no option to restore just backup.
So, tried factory reset from recovery, copied the 'old' backup to the sd, and booted. Nothing was restored. Have tried all sorts of combos to try and get the backup to be read, but no joy at all. Even completely wiping everything, flashing the original rom i was using (modaco 3.1) and restarting, but still sense doesnt see the backup.
I definitley remember it doing it once during all the crazy rom swopping of the last few days, and the sms, wifi key etc all restored, but I can't get it to do it again.
Any ideas about 'forcing' the restore? I know that the backup is handset specific (tied to the serial/imei?) but it should restore on any rom using sense yeh?
all help greatly appreciated
ta.
another small thought, there may be an app idea in here for anyone thats interested - reading the sense backup and applying it by force? i know quite a few people tend to backup their sd card regularly, so it could be useful as a last resort option.
I guess there's not much I can help you but to avoid this problem in the future you might want to use SMS backup (by Cristoph Studer, there are 2 others on the Market with the same name) - backs up your sms's to your Gmail account, works great. I love the Cloud!
I have used sms backup in the past, didn't bother this time as i had the nandroid backup. Kicking myself as I'm usually pretty careful about what files i'm getting rid of, and have got all my sms for about the last ten yrs (minus the 2 months i just lost) for blackmail purposes time to crank the delete button paranoia up a notch again
edit: solved tok everything off the sd card, made sure i had the backup set from the date range i wanted, wiped absolutely everything from recovery, reflashed the rom i was running when the backup was taken & rebooted. the backup was picked up fine, all settings, sms etc back with no problems.
the small trick to getting this to occur seems to be just let the phone sit for a minute when it reboots - i assume that if you go into the setup wizard before the sd card is correctly moutned and read that you bypass the restore. i had done the same procedure to try to get it to restore before and it didn't, the pause to allow the sd card to be read was the only thing i did differently.
I'm having the same issue, I want to restore a back-up from my SD card, but cannot see any way to do it. I've tried a factory reset, but still no luck.
Can a restore be forced? The 2.2 upgrade seems to have removed Settings>Privacy
Same problem here, Froyo won't restore my backup.
I tried to downgrade to Eclair, but the installation failed with "Error 140: wrong bootloader version".
I guess my backup is pretty useless now...
Frojo wont restore settings after hardreset
I asked HTC about this, and here's the answer:
Thanks for your question regarding backup of your device. The former feature backup to SD card is missing in this newer version. This is due to Google, which has developed backup feature in the software, changed the system in 2.2, then back out to their servers instead. This applies to the Google devices, such as NexusOne. When your device is the HTC brand, we have some backup features as before. However, you can take backup in the following way (as with older versions of Android): Contacts: You can save contacts via Outlook when they are created as telephone contacts. For this you need HTC Sync and Outlook on your computer. HTC Sync, see your device's SD card. To open the map, select Mount in the device, your device is displayed on the computer as an external disk drive. Then you find the program through your computer's Windows Explorer, and also integrates it on your computer. You can now sync. You can also download HTC Sync from our website under Support tab. If you use Google contacts they can be retrieved back when you set up your email again. If you have configured an Exchange server, you can also download contacts onto the device again. Calendar appointments: These are transferred in the same manner as contacts. Emails: These can be synchronized over again through your Exchange server, or if you have Google mail. Data files: These can be transmitted via computer Explorer when you select Mount as previously described. You can then transfer your files to a folder on your computer. SMS and MMS: Those you can not backup.

Way to go HTC.... hurray
The more I learn about Google and HTC's way of handling my data I get more determined to Root my phone to get full access of my phone, and to control what data and in what way that data is transferred to either google or HTC.
When you compare to the way Apple is controlling it's sheep herd, Google is not any better when it comes to data gathering and data sniping.

Backup not possible with previeus build in backup, that is..
Yes, for those of us updating to the latest version of the beta Mango, they told us over and over again to backup your backup. Well, make sure you do. When you uninstall the current zune client (to reinstall the new version, as instructed) it cleans out the folder that contains your backup.
I just kept the zune 4.8 beta installed.. but I made multiple backups anyway just to be safe
Where is the backup kept?
C:\Users\YOU \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update
If the worst case scenario happens and you lose all your backups, couldn't someone just reset their NoDo phone to stock, make a backup on the way to Mango, and then just share that backup with those that have their same device? Is a backup specific to a serial number or something?
I believe the backup is tied to the device. You'd need to flash back to a stock ROM.

yes, backups are coded to a single phone and encrypted, so you can not use another phone's backup files.

I will borrow this thread...
Can I move a backup from one computer to another?
I just updated my phone at work and want my backup at home.
(not mango or developer-related, official update)

I would think so, I don't it's locked to 1 device, but don't think it matter what PC it's on. I have uninstalled & re-installed Zune multiple times on my PC & my back-up has always worked. Granted it's the same PC, but just uninstalling & re-installing Zune could cause a conflict if that were the case.
So I backed up my original backup, and now I have another backup in my update folder which I can only assume is the backup from when I went from Mango beta to beta2. I assume I can just scrap that backup and copy my old backup back in when it's time to go to Mango RTM?
Isn't it enough to Backup the File in C:\PreMangoState?
Push.
Could you please answer my question?
for people just to copy and paste...
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update
Your backup from Zune is stored here, Not in "C:\PreMangoState" (that was done by some script that is floading around, it should be 1gb+ in size)
When you change Zune versions, it tends to overwrite this folder so when you make your backup, BACK IT UP!
Happend to me once, thank god I had an issue with my phone and have insurance !

Then I will get in double trouble (MANGOed my OMNIA 7 and my girlfriends HTC HD7)
In only have a backup of the PRE MANGO STATE Folder.
I did not backup my backup from ZUNE folder cause there was no word of that on any Site I read.
Example:

(this was the method I used)

Pre-mango state might have it, but, the Microsoft way is in that folder. Check the folder size, if it's over a few gb, then you should be ok (WP7 with nothing install in it, is about 440mb as backup (I did a clean backup)).
I did that windowsphonehacker thing when I did it and my Premangostate was like 5kb, a xml file and the real files were all stored in the
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update
Good luck... If your missing it, just go to 7720 and prey they allow upgrades from that...or break it and do an insurance replacement
DavidDC:
You're probably ok as long as the file size is appropriately large. The cremangostate files should be a backup of the files created by Zune in the above mentioned "windows phone update" folder.

Well, I suggest to use NanDroid Backup to backup everything to SDCard. Nandroid also backup android settings/ apps, so I suggest do this backup only if you're going use same Android version as you currently on.
Otherwise I sugg you to do only User's Apps/Data/settings backup.
Hi,
Please don't use a nandroid backup from a different device to a new one. That can cause many issues, including destroying your new phone if you restore system or EFS by accident.
Try titanium backup maybe for User apps only... no system apps. Or again, might be serious issues.
If you saved contacts to your Google account, they will be on your new device the minute you log into your Google account during setup of the new phone.
If any other apps don't restore data properly, that's just something you'll have to live with. ?
Hi,
I've had the same problem with my M7 and now my M8. I can do HTC backups no problem, but when the time comes to restore, it never works, it'll get to about 37% and stay there for hours until I reboot. Some stuff gets restored but not much.
I tried:
- Skipping the restore at first boot and restoring after - Same problem
- Skip the restore at first boot, kill all the apps, manual restore - Same problem
The sign-in to Google plus works, it does find the backup each time, it just stalls completely when I restore.
Titanium backup, if your rooted. Can't beat it. ?
Sorry for indirect solution... But I froze HTC backup on day one. ?

Yeah I also tried HTC Backup once and froze it, didn't want to properly restore for me either. I rather make backups of the entire data partition and just number it appropriately. For example: Made backup on 1 October, Place it in a folder named "Data October" next backup at 1 November in a folder named "Data November" <With that backup in the folder I make a text document with info of all additional programs/changes I made since last backup, in other words, a mini change log. Will make it easier to restore to a point prior to a point where I had an "incident" (Even though I never had one *touch wood* ). I use Titanium rarely if ever, used to do it a lot but I prefer backing up the entire data partition, as big as it is.
