720p recording lags - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using RCMixS v2.0 rom (with Gingerbread 2.3.3) and in my Desire I have a Sandisk micro-sdhc (not mobile ultra ) and, my video recorded at 720p have some lags.
May the microsd be the cause? Or it's a rom problem? If it is a rom problem, how can i solve?
Thank you in advance,
Sbarabau

Both. 720p recording lagged from the day one, maybe the least on 1.9 roms, but lag was(is?) present nevertheless.
Faster sd card might improve it somewhat as people reported. But people reported ICS aosp is faster than GB aosp, so I'd say you'd be on thin ice believing there.

Thank you. For now I have increased the bit-rate of h264 codec in the media-profiles.xml file (I changed it from 14000000 to 20000000).
The biggest lags seems to be disappeared, but the video recording is still a little choppy...
EDIT: I have to correct myself, 720p still lags... any software solution, like as any script?

If I set Video bitrate to 2x on ICS camera, does this mean that the video will be smoother? If it's 2x, it is that more demanding for the phone?

Standard roms or aosp roms (hd roms have problems with 720p, although it works now, it's still slow) with oc'ed camera chips.

What you really should be looking for is a Class 6+ SD card!!!

With my stock froyo ROM i didn't have any troubles with 720p recording
Now im with RCmixHD 2.0 A2SD and I have freezes and lags with 720p recording.
Do you think change of my 4GB SD card ( which comes with desire ) with a 8GB Class 6 , would speed up and fix this 720p freezes and lags ?
CyanogenMod 7 and 7 (I think 6) works. There are a few other roms that work properly. And to be honest, it's not really down to your SD Card class for 720p recording. I have a class 2 card and never had any problems with it when the recording has been fine. It's down to the dev of the rom.
i've a class 10 card. i've tried hd roms, leedroid roms, now rcmix rom. but always having problem with 720p recording. with some of them, videos are only 9fps, and with others there are lags and etc. what should i do

cyanogenmod 7 does not even include 720p recording nor playback...
thought it was the speed of the sd card that causes lag in 720p recording... was planing to get a class 6 micro sd because i tried reflex gingersense and 720p was messy.. i thought it was my current class 2 card which was too slow... does not depend on class?
Im having the same problem.
What gives?
A lot of roms say "720p recording" but i cannot find a sense rom (at least froyo) that has working 720p (no lag, no out of sync, etc).
Can anyone help ?
What rom does have 720p recording working ?
So it seems that starburst classic has 720p working but it really is an unstable build.
i get fc a lot , flash is not working, market did not work last time i flashed, etc.
a lot of problems.
Did u find any other roms that have 720p working ?
I have RCMixHD v2.0 installed.
I have a class 2 16GB sd card.
The lag is no-where near the stock 2.2 rom, so It's the rom for sure!
Maybe wait for v2.1?
I looked at the bit-rate once, and it was about 1MB/s on a stock 2.2 rom, so a class 2 SD card, which can transfer a minimum of 2MB/s, should be able to do the job, right?
i have asked on numerous threads and noone ever answered! does the class of the sdcard makes difference? will a class 6 card have flawless 720p recording?? i would like someone with a class 6 card to answer plz
Ive just installed reflex s 2.1.2 lite a2sd+ and it seems 720p recording actually works very well.
I DO have class 6 16gb card.
So i guess someone with lower class card can try this rom and see if the 720p recording works, and if not, than its clear the card class is a factor.
Ps: i've reformated and repartitioned my card before flashing first ledroid 2.5.0 and then reflex s.
finally a reply! thx! but 720p recording does not work well with the class 6 card on leedroid? i have a class 2 card ans 720p recording lags a lot on leedroid froyo.
i formated the card and first installed ledroid 2.5.0 that i thought is stable and fast and has 720p (because of froyo) . but as it turns out it doesnt work ..
720p recording on leedroid froyo lags even with your class 6 card? i am disappointed... was going to buy a class 6 card and use leedroid froyo as i find it to be the fastest, most stable rom around with great battery life.
what reflex rom are you using? is it gingersense? (android 2.3)
reflex s 2.1.2 lite a2sd+ (gingersense)
android 2.3.3
With Reflex S my 720P recordings appear pretty stretched.
mine works fine.
maybe u have a lot of stuff on ur card, or maybe its slower (lower class).
when it comes to ROM it only matters if it does, or does not support 720p - check camera settings...
higher class sd card will help a bit, but wont make it great...
fact is desires camera isnt really made to work flawlessly with 720p, no matter which card or rom you have, fps will rapidly drop in low light conditions. its really a hardware limitation.
i would suggest using 480p always...

Good 720 HD Sense ROM ?

Hi All
Which Sense ROM do I need to install to be able to record good 720 HD video?
Is there a Kernel that will work to make Sprint (SprintLover) 3.7 ROM record without chopping up the video?
Video quality is far more important than the frame limit that 3.7 unlocked so if I need to go back a few versions I will.
Thanks
As far as I know they are all pretty much the same as far as video recording goes. Its an evo thing not a rom thing.
I am pretty sure video was a lot better (nearly skip free) a few update (versions) ago.
I use Warm Z 2.2 and 720p recording works just fine for me. Playback shows no choppiness.

did you use a different Kernel than the one built into warm2.2?
I installed warm 2.2 and really like it and so far it is ok with video but does freeze a little. I found running task killer helps video recording with less skips.
My wife is using Netrachy 4.3.4 with SL ROM and we had a horrible experience today where it only recorded 10 seconds of sound and video and then continued to do sound but not video. Really sucks.
seems that with sufficient internal memory video can record at 720
over 150 mb free
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
What speed is your SD Card? I've heard of reports that the choppiness goes away on microSD cards that are Class 4 and faster, while Class 2 cards seem to experience the choppiness.
There could be tons of different things causing your choppiness, this is just one that I had heard about, so if you have a class 4 or faster card then disregard the above.
i use warm z with netarchy toast 4.3.1 just recorded and played back about 30 sec of vid today first time but was flawless

[MOD] [720p HW PLAYBACK] libOmxVdec.so (removal of h/w restrictions in playback)

best 720p solution yet.
Just want to inform all desire owners of Diceplayer.
It dosent support our phone (they say).
But it works flawless if you patch
libOmxVdec.so
wich is meant for the nexus-1.
Since N1 and desire share alot hardware i figured it might also work for our desire.
IT DID!!
This is my first thread or even post on xda.

What Rom Does it Work on?
GB/FROYO - Sense/Non-sense?
Apparently what it does is, it removes restrictions in the h/w decoding. I think the devs of cyanogenmod should look into this and integrate it into their libs.

I use it with cyanogenmod. So yes. Not sure with other roms but i suspect the libs are the same with sense roms.
The modified lib brings h/w hd functionality to other players aswell. Free alternatives like qqplayer. Probably other players also.
Someone should hint the devs of cyanogen to integrate the functionality into their roms. Devices that are capable. The Nexus-1 and desire.
Just tested it on Rcmix 2.0 sense rom still lags
So basically it will work on GingerVillain 2.7, too? Well, I'll try and see.
Playback yes iirc, but isn't 720p recording Sense only feature?

You must use a player that uses hardware rendering. Default setting in many players are software rendering. Change to hardware rendering (in player).
it worked, but messed up the weather vids on cool sensation though.
hi to all,
just tried the patch and i would dare to correct the OP, well at least in my situation, 720p video playback didnt become without lag, however, now its less laggy. im using GB rom, Rcmix 2.0 with CM7r2 partition table, and class 10 16GB micro sd card (reading writing 11mb/s, reading 22 mb/s). so it has nothing to do with the card, however, as i said there much less lag now but videos are still not as smooth as i used to have on 2.2 based ROMS. but if htc release proper GB rom then maybe developers will be able to do something about it

You should write, which rom/kernel you are using. Otherwise your information is very senseless.

Well. I am using cyanogen kernel and nightly rom. I have a class 10 sd card (sd-booster 2048).
I am having good results with 720 mkv video (diceplayer and qqplayer).
it works..!
took quite awhile for me to get SDK adb working.. but now it works so smooth!!
either on dice player or native player!
kudos for TS
PS: im also on CM7 rom and kernel, S2E a2sd, and stock 2GB SD card
work on leedroidhd?!
Would it work on Insertcoin stock GB rom?

no idea of other roms aside from CM7, but i suggest to do nandroid backup, and then follow instruction inside the link from 1st post..
@OP - Are you part of dev team for this? I ask because you seem very keen to get this integrated into CM and you seem to have a lot of technical info.
BTW, I tried it on CM7.1RC1 and find lag. The "News & Tips" page you linked to does actually state though that 720p does lag at present until possibly the next update.

If you manage to load the lib correctly (works in cm7, thats all i know) you should feel big difference from regular software encoding players like rockplayer etc.
Shure. there are some lags. But as i stated before. noting in comparison to software enc. based players. Very large 720 mkv may lag. But a typical 4gig 720p mkv plays well.
No. Im not in the dev team. I just been searching for a solution to play hi def mkv video. And this is by far the best solution.
What i do is every time i reflash my rom (cm nightly) i replaces the lib from first post with the one included in cm7 .zip file. /system/lib/libomxvdec.so
For testing this you must make sure diceplayer or any other player, is set to hardware encoding. Otherwise no improvement in playback.

[Q] Laggy 720p Video playback in all gingrbread roms

Hello,
Guys I have an strange problem regarding 720p vedio playback (Not recording) with all the gingerbread roms with 2.1 sense. I have tried almost all the dev's rom like RCMIX,Reflex, Insertcoin so on and so fourth. But in every gingerbread rom 720p video's are laggy. When i was in froyo all the 720p movies played smoothly. I am using a class 6 micro SD card with fat32 and EXT4 partition. Plz guys help me to solve the problem becuse for one specific problem I cant use gingerbread roms.
That is a problem with all the GB ROMs... until the DEVs have a GB RUU from HTC. Maybee...
So if U use that feature a lot, dont go GB... (yet)
thanks jakedude for such a quick reply But I thought 720p video recording is a problem for gingerbread roms not playing any movie or song of 720p. And not only 720p but also 480p is also laggy. I dont know why it is occuring. I have done everything including overclock and underclocking but all of this went in vein. Someone please help
Missed u meant playing. Yes, recording is laggy, dont know about playing.
Usually The Q is about recording, so I jumped the gun. Sorry
thanks dude for helping But one thing I don't understand does Dev's know about this problem ?? Because they are saying they are designing stable rom's. But if there is problem regarding laggy video playback how can it be stable And I cant even be sure whether its a problem of my sdcard or anything else!! Hey Jake ..have u been facing problem regarding playing high resolution video(720p) on ur desire using RCMixS v2.0.1. Because same problem belongs to this rom also.plz help me out..

[Q] Which ROM has the best camera (including 720p)

I'd love to have panorama and HDR, I tried a ROM last month that had the options (I think it was a sense ROM) but they didn't work well and it force-closed sometimes, etc.
I've also found that some of the newer android version ROMs seem to lack either H.264 or 720p video.
Front-facing camera is nice to have, but even the ROMs with that seem to suck for Skype.
Help!
You can download both of them from the play store... I have both and they work great..

how jerky is it? (i dont just mean playback on the phone itself, i mean no matter what device you play it back on. in other words, when i use AOSP cameras at 720p, there is jerkiness baked into the output. stutter, judder, jerkiness, dropped frames, insufficient fps, call it what you want, motion portrayal is poor especially during slow pans.)

hmm, yeah i guess it is a little jerky.
Well thanks for the link in your sig, got that ROM running now and it seems like a keeper
Well, ok, if you're serious about all this, I will add that changing your scheduler to BFQ is probably the single best improvement you can make to videocam recording smoothness. You'll need a kernel that supports this. Almost any custom kernel will. If you're going to use the ROM in my sig (the Captain's 5.07 stock ROM) I would recommend the "Underworld" kernel. If you're running a AOSP ROM , I'm not as familiar with those choices (although I would recommend Reloaded anyway, and the "Mason" kernel included with it supports BFQ already, even if it isn't optimal for general, non-videocam performance). Note you'll have to do additional research on how to *activate* the BFQ scheduler even once you have a kernel that supports it. Or maybe you knew all this. But others may be interested. Happy searching..
used hdr camera + with cm7.2 (nightlies) and worked pretty fantastic. Def considered it better quality than stock camera and here is my disclaimer im not a photo buff... lol
In my opinion the Sense Rom Cameras look better. I've probably ran just about every rom on the OG EVO and that is what I have noticed.
