Hi All
Which Sense ROM do I need to install to be able to record good 720 HD video?
Is there a Kernel that will work to make Sprint (SprintLover) 3.7 ROM record without chopping up the video?
Video quality is far more important than the frame limit that 3.7 unlocked so if I need to go back a few versions I will.
Thanks
As far as I know they are all pretty much the same as far as video recording goes. Its an evo thing not a rom thing.
I am pretty sure video was a lot better (nearly skip free) a few update (versions) ago.
I use Warm Z 2.2 and 720p recording works just fine for me. Playback shows no choppiness.

did you use a different Kernel than the one built into warm2.2?
I installed warm 2.2 and really like it and so far it is ok with video but does freeze a little. I found running task killer helps video recording with less skips.
My wife is using Netrachy 4.3.4 with SL ROM and we had a horrible experience today where it only recorded 10 seconds of sound and video and then continued to do sound but not video. Really sucks.
seems that with sufficient internal memory video can record at 720
over 150 mb free

What speed is your SD Card? I've heard of reports that the choppiness goes away on microSD cards that are Class 4 and faster, while Class 2 cards seem to experience the choppiness.
There could be tons of different things causing your choppiness, this is just one that I had heard about, so if you have a class 4 or faster card then disregard the above.
i use warm z with netarchy toast 4.3.1 just recorded and played back about 30 sec of vid today first time but was flawless

Seriously every single video I record comes out with artifacts and choppy/freezing. What in the world is happening. I can't be the only one? Fix for this!!? So disappointing, sigh
Try on CM6. HTC sucks at coding.
They set a low bit rate in the video with high compression. CM has normal ones, plus they're working on better audio.

Damn out of all the times I've flashed CM6 I've never tried the HD recording! This might be the definite deal breaker for me for Sense Roms.
Yeah. It looks really nice on CM6. >_<
I had the same issue with 2.1 and 2.2. I noticed that when I played the video for a second time it would play smooth (maybe it got cached). I just changed the SD card to a Ridata class 6 and now videos always play OK.

Yeah but it also plays back choppy on my computer when I transfer the file over or if I upload it to YouTube or anywhere else. I am going to try CM6 now and see what kind of results I get.
I'll admit I haven't tried 720P recording on CM6 in a few weeks but under RC1 the issue I was having was that the video and audio would lose sync...I took a recording of my dog barking at my cat and the video of the bark was showing before the bark sound. I guess I should try it on the nightly I'm running now and see how it is.
do not record in mpeg4 try H.264 that worked for me

Hey - on any build I've used on my G2 the video playback on PC / Phone has been choppy for HD video I've recorded. Right now I'm rocking CM 7 Nightly #25, and it's still choppy. CM 6.1 was choppy, stock rooted was choppy and the stock ROM was choppy. Now, I've replaced the phone once already. Anyone having this issue?

I filmed some skate video on the phone b4 and after root, the video didnt chop. Now it does. I was no cm7 and didnt flash with cmw 3.0. Got fcs a lot and flashed it correctly. Then thats when I got lag. Anyway I dont know but I did have kind of the same issue.
It's wild, it'll lock up for like 2 seconds - and the sound will keep going.
I also have the same problem, I believe it is because of the class of the SD card, try a class 4 or higher??
I had this issue too, many people do. I bought a class 4, 6 then 10! and they all produce the same effect!. I went and put the class 4 card in a Kodak Playsport & it's flawless... it's a hardware limitation of the phone I think with the speed it can throw the video on the SD cards I think!
I have a class 6 8GB SDCard
I have a class 10 uSD card - stock ROM - and it's choppy recording for me.
could you try this out

Interesting find indeed! I'll have to review the settings when I have a moment, and will probably give it a shot. Of course make a nandroid backup FIRST and even make a backup of that /system/etc/media_profiles.xml file, and then play around with it.
FWIW I've experienced this issue with every ROM I've had on this phone (stock, CM based, HTC Sense based, etc). I've just learned to deal with it, but maybe I won't need to anymore.
Hi all,
Have been using the Desire for nearly 2 years, great phone. I use the phone's Camera (Baby Photos & Videos recording) more then anything else. Enjoyed using the 720p recording when I was on Android 2.2 until the Stock 2.3 upgrade few months back. Then I found the video recording went funny, lagging, video/audio out of sync, couldn't handle 720p anymore etc.
Got very annoyed for too long so decided to root it at the weekend and try other ROMs. Tried a few and settled on the Aurora V03 which has a great camera app (w/Sense 3.0). Thought the out of sync issue went away but unfortunately it's still there. Even when I lowered the quality to 800x480, the problem still exist.
Tried the SD Card Increase from the market and tweaked it to 2048kb, same.
Thought it's software/rom related as I could record 720p no issue when I was still on 2.2
I am using Kingston Class 4 8GB card since day one. Do you know any tweak that can help me please?
Any idea is much appreciated! Don't really want to upgrade my phone just because of this.
Thanks!

Moving to Q&A
By what ive read on the forums on here this is a common problem for 2.3 on the desire. Im unsure on how exactly to solve it though. Have you tried changing the file format it records in? That helped for me
Yes I have tried both 3gpp and mp4 and they are the same. Strange that I didn't see much discussion about this. Thinking to downgrade back to 2.2..... Although don't quite wanted to.
Have you tried a faster sd card? I had similar problems when I used the class 4 that came with the phone. Now I have a class 10 playback is fine, even with full length movies and tv shows.

he is not talking about playback ,but about 720p recording...
unfortunately, there is no solution yet for that issue,no matter what ROM u try it'll still be there. 800x480 should be ok, if u're having problems, format and align ur fat32 and make sure that it's not an issue of the ROM u're using. as for 720p, as i mentioned earlier, no joy
Writing this thread to compile my discoveries about 480p and 720p.
Using asop roms, there's only 480p available... with default camera it kind of lags sometimes...with occasional audio sync issues.... but when i use lgcamera and mono recording with no aac encoding (very bad sound), there's audio issues... framerate can be bad at times though.
using sense roms, 720p never works well.... lags all the time, choppy and audio completely out of sync... 480p also mostly does not work well on default camera...
on lgcamera wth some low aac settings at 480p, you can get decent recordings but if you record for too long, you can have audio sync issues...
with aac disabled, at 480p, recording is decent with no audio sync issues but audio is horrible...
i am using a class 10 kingston sd card.
Can you guys share your experience? i would be satisfied to find the perfect setup for good 480p with good audio .(i know 720p is impossible on htc desire)... thx in advance for your contributions!
i just downloaded sd card tester.. my writing speed is 2.6mb/s and reading speed 9.92mb/s!! it's supposed to be a class 10 card!!! i think i got ripped off??
Take your card in reader if possible and test with crystalmark.
ok thx will try that...
look at that thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523018
is there such thread for htc desire?? what the optimal settings for the media_profiles.xml?? does it work with runnymede aio rom?
SD Card Speed Increase!

A CLASS 10 with only 2.6mb/s write and 9.92 read?!?!?! The read is average but the write is very low.
If you have root access, run this app and you'll notice a huge improvement in SD write and read speeds.
Here is an article on Android Police that shows proof of speed increases: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...-200-with-a-simple-tweak-hands-on-benchmarks/
Here is the app I'm talking about:
https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zZGluY3JlYXNlLml0Il0.
The performance difference is absolutely stunning.
After, run SD Tools https://market.android.com/details?...1bGwsMSwxLDEsImFsZXMudmVsdXNjZWsuc2R0b29scyJd to check if the speed difference.
You should try to switch the sliders between different values. Each SD card is different and one value may work for somebody but not you. I'm using 4096kb on my Lexar class 10 16GB and I get read speeds of 31mb/s and write speed of 9.2mb/s.
I am using RCMixS v2.0 rom (with Gingerbread 2.3.3) and in my Desire I have a Sandisk micro-sdhc (not mobile ultra ) and, my video recorded at 720p have some lags.
May the microsd be the cause? Or it's a rom problem? If it is a rom problem, how can i solve?
Thank you in advance,
Sbarabau

Both. 720p recording lagged from the day one, maybe the least on 1.9 roms, but lag was(is?) present nevertheless.
Faster sd card might improve it somewhat as people reported. But people reported ICS aosp is faster than GB aosp, so I'd say you'd be on thin ice believing there.

Thank you. For now I have increased the bit-rate of h264 codec in the media-profiles.xml file (I changed it from 14000000 to 20000000).
The biggest lags seems to be disappeared, but the video recording is still a little choppy...
EDIT: I have to correct myself, 720p still lags... any software solution, like as any script?
If I set Video bitrate to 2x on ICS camera, does this mean that the video will be smoother? If it's 2x, it is that more demanding for the phone?
