How long until this happens - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I remember being pissed at how it took Sammy longer to port either gb or froyo on to the gs1 than how long it took Google to make it so how long until this happens on ics?

Were supposed to be getting it very soon. I mean Samsung is pushing Sprint to finish testing the last builds they sent them. They are giving them an ultimatum saying they will release the source anyways if they did not OTA within like a week. As far as Samsung is concerned they are done. There probably will need to be a bug fix ota in the future but with source the community will have your back on that until that happens as theyre focus is heading elsewhere.
But heck many of us have been on ICS since February. Between some of the late leaks and CyanogenMod9 is pretty good. AOKP is getting there as well and MIUI just grabbed WiMax capability.

Are we getting 2.3.5 or 2.3.7 anytime soon?

This may be a stupid question, but with the release of the source code for ICS, why do you think it would take so long for it to get it pushed to the E4GT?

Well its been almost 2 months since the phone came out and we haven't got any updates that would fix the Los, and I read somewhere that cm9 will be out in about 2 months (some developer tweet it) so hopefully by march or 4 months from now, I'm no expert but that sounds very reasonable. I also read that the release was for the nexus, And that they are going to release the code for more devices in the future.

I'm holding out hope for ics and cyanogen, it gets disheartening though, not hearing of any development progress other than basic mod roms
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If you are asking about an "official" release from either Sprint or Samsung no one really knows what version we will get IF any for that matter right now. IIRC the original Epic 4g just had a "official" 2.3.7 rom leak out but its still a beta so we can only hope that in the end that's the build we will be getting from Sprint/Samsung.

Good news

ICS is close.

Don't get too excited, while our phones may have a Exynos CPU we also are the only ones with a CDMA and Wimax radio. That the biggest reason we don't have CM7 yet while all the other SGSII's do, at least in beta form. It may take some time to get the driver situation sorted so I wouldn't expect the E4GT to get ICS in beta form as soon as the others.

Kudos to Bubby on that but just cause he gets it doesnt mean it'll be supported by CM. If they try to merge it and it breaks the existing builds, thats a no go. Slayher worked forever on the tbolt and it never played nice, the build itself is awesome but it couldn't be synced to mainline properly...not even sure its supported yet (although i sold that a couple months ago).
Not trying to be a downer, just realistic.

Samsung made a comment last month regarding ICS on the Galaxy SII.
Official update from Samsung and carriers will be 2nd Qtr next year = April - June. Unfortunately this sounds about right. I recall the original EVO 4G didn't get official Gingerbread update until June, six months after it was out.
Plus Samsung said they want the Galaxy S3 out a little earlier, Spring next year. I bet we see Samsung's next gen Galaxy series release first before the SII gets official ICS update.
Sprint Galaxy S2 w/ Calk's 1.5a + ICS 1.6
EDIT: Nevermind.

[Q] Samsung or Sprints fault?

As you know we dont have ics source yet for our phones :/
but other samsung phones like the GS2(AT&T) and the Note are already using ics.
So my question is, at this point, who is to blame for our ics not being released?
BTW, if im wrong about something, tell me cause im kinda new at this
Samsung controls the source code and the ROM.
Sprint only controls if we get OTA update.

Historically, update around 6 months after the new android is released is normal for sprint android phones. Takes longer for cdma phones because GSM gets worked on first due to the much larger user base

Could be that Samsung won't officially release ICS for the epic touch until S3 is out? The could be copying what HTC does for their devices. Release the update after a new model is launched.

Is it really that big of deal. We will still be getting ics before a lot of other devices and some devices that came out around the same time won't get it all. Samsung/sprint don't even need to release ics for this phone. I am just happy we will be getting it at all. It sounds like its very close anyways.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
There are good reasons why ICS hasn't gone OTA just yet... And in the end it will be a win for everyone. Those that have been working on addressing bugs and trying to ensure the major ones - like the "superbrick" or eMMC bug - are addressed before OTA are doing so in the hopes that our release is the best that it can be.
But don't take my word for it... Just look at the most recent threads in the General forum. You will see the effort that the XDA community, Samsung and Sprint have put in so far to have this roll out with as few issues as possible.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I really dont understand why everyone is complaining so much about this ota update. Some variant of ics has been available for this phone for months. Its been fun to flash the leaks and try out various roms with a stable gb base to roll back to just in case. Samsung and Sprint could have dumped a decent ics leak on us several months ago but they decided to work it a bit more and give us some 4.0.4. If you want ics now then flash el22, its awfully nice.

I remember it took AT&T months to put out the gingerbread update for my infuse. The last leak from samsung was I believe 3 or 4 months before official rom came out and it was the exact same rom.
If you are on xda the leak is when the rom is released, who cares about official at&t release.
I had froyo and gingerbread on my captivate months before at&t got their act together.

I don't think AT&T would release that as they don't want to mess with iPhone 5 roll out and steal that thunder. However the smart thing is for Samsung to push the crap out of this and put pressure on all carriers to release JB before iPhone 5 comes out.

With an official or leaked release of 4.1 of s3, will that improve the "original dev" section with faster development since the developers will have access to drivers they didn't before?

I think the carriers will defintiely slow the process down. However, I really don't think it will take as long as it did going from GB to ICS for SGS2 variants. If you recall, some SGS2 Variants in US and Canada just got their ICS around the same time SGS3 was released (LOL). But the upgrade from ICS to Jellybean is fairly small and I know that Google and Samsung (as well as other manufacturers) are trying to make updates a ltitle more timely than they have been in the past. Whether or not this will hold true is yet to be seen. However, seeing that there is already a leak for i9300 so soon shows me that Samsung is making more of an effort. I don't recall the ICS leaks for my i9100 coming out this soon
I'd be surprised if AT&T even releases JB for the Galaxy S3. Doing that would only benefit the customer, and it is strictly against AT&T's policy to do anything that might benefit the end user.
I'd say there is a 90% chance we will all be stuck with ICS unless we root and flash our own JB custom ROM's. AT&T doesn't care if you use ICS. Hell, 98% of people with the Galaxy S3 in the United States don't even know what ICS and Jellybean are, and they couldn't care less as long as the phone functions.

You get an A+ for positivity, but unfortunately, you're giving the carriers too much credit, especially AT&T. In the end, Samsung pushing out updates in a timely manner is as useful as rubber lips on a woodpecker because the frigging carriers are guaranteed to slow sh*t down so they can bloat the software up to their liking.

Question for all you experienced custom ROM installers: is there a custom JB rom in the wild that has everything working? I've been thinking about JB since it came out, and now I am reading that it might be another few months before we have the official T-Mobile version. I am finally tempted to root and do a custom rom.
So, is there a fully working, stable Cyogen Mod 10 out there? I am not interested in nightly builds. I would just like the experience one gets from a Nexus phone that is running vanilla JB.
Thanks!!

I say T-Mobile because the article is specifically referencing them. I've gone through all of the recent roms created by great devs like DJIntrigue which seem to be quite ready for prime time so it doesn't make much sense that there needs to be more "months" for a final release. We're not talking usability here as I assume most of us root our devices but it would be great to have faster availability of the latest Android firmware in case we wanted to run that.

The problem is carriers want to add in their own apps and "test" the update for compatibility with their networks...not to mention the majority of users aren't text savvy (or rooted, for that matter) and the carrier doesn't want to be flooded with "I updated mai fone and it's no worky no mo'" calls....
We may want faster availability, the carriers want people to pay upgrade fees (and/or buy devices outright) and less headaches....

Dj's and Wild's jb roms are fairly heavily modified. The leaks they are based on are still buggy and horrible on battery life.
I for one would much rather wait a few more months and get a solid release.
Besides, I'm willing to bet that most who are getting impatient waiting for the official release will wind up going back to custom roms within a couple of days anyway.
Plus, with how good Frosty and XquiziT are, you could pretend its based of the official release and be just as happy! (If I wanted to blame anyone it'd be them for raising the bar and forcing Tmobile and Sammy back to development!)
I honestly don't get all the impatience. With how hyped some folks are getting over it I can only see them being disappointed! Then we get to read all about how lame Sammy and Tmobile are for not taking the time to make it better!

No leaks anymore from samsung period! For any device.
It'd have to be leaked from tmobile for us to get it now.
That's how I understand it anyway. If you follow the build versions, there would've probably been about 9 other leaks by now, had they kept their systems up like they were.
(Last leak was LI8, new ota is LIJ) 9 builds in between. Also I'm guessing the jb update must not actually be ready. (Maybe they found something they didn't like)
They seem to be doing what I expected with having another official ICS update before JB.
I could be wrong of course. Time will tell.
