I'm on T-Mobile USA, and have stock rom (2.3.6, Baseband T989UVKL1, Kernel 2.6.35.11, Build: GINGERBREAD.UVKL1). This phone is completely stock right now.
I just got the notification about the OTA, which I assume will be to ICS.
Questions before I accept the OTA update:
1. Will I be able to root after installing the official stock ICS update?
2. If so, would I use the ODIN method, or some other method?
3. Other than bloat, are there any known issues with the stock ICS rom.
4. Should I install CWM before accepting the OTA update?
Basically, I've tried looking but there doesn't seem to be much information about the official stock ICS update, probably because it is just starting to be rolled out.
Never mind. Just re-saw this http://www.tmonews.com/2012/05/t-mobile-rolling-out-galaxy-s-ii-maintenance-update-no-ice-cream-sandwich-yet/ and realized this update likely isn't ICS yet.

Hello,
Right now I am running Juggernaut, but I am definitely wanting to upgrade to the new stock ICS. What do I need to do if I want to use the OTA update? Right now, I've followed some instructions to disable OTA updates to ensure I didn't get accidental corruption. So, what should I do?
Option A:
1) Restore to GB stock using the thread in the dev section.
2) Wait for the OTA update.
Option B:
1) Enable OTA updates and go from Juggs to ICS. (?)
Option C:
1) Wait for an Odin-flashable upgrade to ICS directly, posted here?
Option D:
1) Wait for something else?
Just curious what you all are doing to get to ICS, and curious about my specific situation. It seems like the safest bet it to go to GB stock and use Kies. Although it seems like it might be cleaner to just wait for an Odin package. Thoughts?
There is no ICS OTA stock update
apparently now there is a stock ICS. I tried to downgrade to previous stock and upgrade to last weeks firmware update from kies. Bad move. now my odin flashes fail at mdm.bin. I found my way back to juggernaut and I am waiting for a better ics rom before I try to mess with kies again.

Baseband only refers to the modem. If you search the development threads, you will find zips to update the modem in clockwork.
As for stock updates, they require the stock recovery to work so if you have clockwork or twrp recovery installed, you will have to go back to stock to receive the ota updates.
Finally on the Jellybean update, you won't miss it. When released, I'm sure the awesome Devs here will pick it up and it would only be a matter of time before a custom rom is released. The benefits of running 'custom' far outweigh anything that releases 'stock'.
I'm currently on a Sprint GN2, v4.1.2, with Baseband L900VPAMA7 and Build JZO54K.L900VPAMA7. Shortly after getting the phone a year ago, I rooted via the Odin method and left the ROM as stock. I have not changed or updated it since. When I have tried to update it with the earlier OTA update from earlier this year, I couldn't due to (I believe) the fact that I have the TWRP recovery and not stock.
With 4.3 hitting, I really would like to get it updated properly. I have been scouring several sites, including XDA, but haven't been able to really answer my questions, which are:
1. Do I need to worry about the earlier OTA update if I get the 4.3 update?
2. Was the earlier OTA update, the update that would have gotten me to a MC2 baseband?
3. Lots of folks talking about Knox files and removing them. Why?
4. For either update, it seems that I have to switch back to the stock recovery, is this correct? But do I need to actually do anything with the ROM itself?
5. And finally, if I have to change back to the stock recovery, how? So many of the how to vids/threads talk about doing both rom and recovery.
Thanks in advance. Oh, and I have found and tried to read through several links on these questions such as:

Would like to know about it too, can find a way to update to MK4
I hope someone can help with a dilemma I have.
I need to flash back to stock rom and do a factory reset on my AT&T SGIII - this I know how to do . However, what I don't know is if the links I've found for tar files for a stock restore (like the one posted here)are for the ice cream sandwich version that launched with the phone, or the newer jelly bean version.
If it is the older version, once I'm done restoring it back to stock and factory settings, will I get an option to update to jelly bean thru AT&T?
Or do I need to find a stock AT&T jelly bean file to flash? If so, where do I find that?
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

this shouldnt be posted here check the general section for going back to stock
Did you update your phone to AT&T 4.3 stock rom via an OTA update? If you did, do not flash any rom that includes an older bootloader as the flash will brick your phone.

No. Ever since going to the Sonic FreeGS3 Resurrection rom, I have been on the 4.1.1 version. I've never been to a more current version than that since that was the last version update for this rom and I liked it just fine.
Even though I'm not wild about having to return to stock, I am at least excited about (hopefully) being able to go up to the latest version released by AT&T. But I wasn't sure if I need to flash a stock 4.3 version AT&T rom (or even where to find that) or if I could just flash the original released stock rom and then be prompted with OTA updates to go to the newer versions.
Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated.
The latest version of the AT&T ROM is 4.3 which can be done via an OTA update or Kies from a stock 4.1.1 AT&T ROM.
Any reason you need to return to stock? Personally, I would not go near 4.3 as it's not required to install KK ROMS and, once on 4.3, rooting, etc. becomes more complicated.

I have to for work. That's the only reason I'm going back to a stock rom. Plus I want to trade my phone in after a few more months once my contract is up.
Hey guys I am trying to update my galaxy s3 to kitkat. I am running galaxy s3 at&t variant 747 rooted 4.1.1. I747UCDLK3 update to kitkat. I realized I need to update to 4.1.2 first before doing the 4.3 update. I can't seems to find files I need for 4.1.2. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thank you for your help.
Are your running stock 4.1.1? If you are and your phone is not sim unlocked, unlock it using the free method. Once unlocked, use Odin to flash back to stock unrooted 4.1.1 and then run OTA until you get to KK. It's a longer process than trying to flash straight to 4.4 but is a safer method for people that are new to flashing ROMs.
I am on the stock rom 4.1.1. Does CWM recovery need to go back to stock as well? That is a good idea to unlock before I update.
If you flash back to stock 4.1.1 with Odin, it will wipe everything and put the phone back to completely unroot stock and stock recovery. Stock recovery and being unrooted is required for OTA updates.
Ok is this the link to unlock phone?

Yes, that's it.
I can't seem to find 4.1.1 rom file links seem to be bad on unlock page.
There are stock rooted 4.1.1 images here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
You can use the free unlock method even if the ROM is rooted.
For some reason the at&t mirrors don't seem to be working either.
Mirror2 for the stock rooted 4.1.1 works for me.
I would like to root again after kit kat Is it easy to root with knox? Does unlock stick through kit kat? I really appreciate all of the help. Great website. Great people.
Many people have had success with rooting by using Towelroot.
The sim unlock is permanent.
Let me know how it goes for you @thepar. I expect to be updating to kitkat in the coming week.
For the benefit of those searching the forums to unlock their phones my experience may be of help to those on 4.1.2 or possibly even MJ2. I have had my SGS3 since June 2013 and only allowed one update, that was to 4.1.2. My phone was rooted long ago, but I just unlocked it earlier today and that was with a custom recovery in place and without unrooting. In my case I did not revert to the 4.1.1 rom. I did downgrade the modem to dlk3, that of 4.1.1 while leaving the rom and bootloader at MG2. After completing the unlock I upgraded the modem back to MG2. I have confirmed that SMS, MMS, phone, and wifi functionality is intact.
In truth, I will probably not go back to stock to get to kitkat. I am considering upgrading to the leaked MJ2/4.3 bootloader and MJB modem and then flash a kitkat rom which will work on them, there are several.
I just did the unlock yesterday. I need to find someone with a t-mobile sim to test if the unlock worked. Will I still be able to update the OS even though it is on rooted stock? What will it update me too?
I am kind of debating if I should install a custom rom minus KNOX.

If you want to run an OTA update, you need stock recovery and an unrooted system.
I have a stock recovery but the os is rooted. I don't mind using oden to update the os. I might be better to install a rom with knox removed. I can't seem to find 4.1.1 stock unrooted. I did find 4.0.1 ICS.
You can find a stock ATT 4.1.1 ROM on sammobile.com.
You cannot use Odin to flash a stock KK ROM because it was never released in an Odin format by ATT. ATT provided the KK update via OTA updates. Complete KK updates were provided for i747m only.
Thanks so much!! downloading now.
Let us know what happens. Cheers
I have decided to go custom rom route. It is better to update stock ota first then install custom rom or custom rom straight from 4.1.1?
