I was rooted for a while using the Revolutionary method, but decided to return my phone to stock due to some other issues I was having with it. My question now is, I still have S-Off with 2.3.4, will it accept the ICS OTA update if/when it comes out? Thanks in advance!!
If you are on the stock ROM with stock recovery, you will receive, and more importantly, be able to install, the OTA even if you have s-off. The most important part is to have stock recovery because the OTA needs it to perform the upgrade.
Thanks! How can I verify if I have the stock recovery?
Do you really need the OTA. I bet once the official ics drops these devs will have something stable to flash very soon after release. Then you can use what ever recovery you choose.
Questions belong in Q&A.
You could also use this to return to stock everything.

That is what I used to return to stock but it leaves S-off, which was the purpose of my question. Thanks, tho!

First, sorry for another 2.3 OTA question but I am getting confused reading all these threads, so I thought I would just post my question straight out: I am currently running Sinister ROM V4 and want to know if I run a RUU and then install the 2.3 update will I be able to root (using Unrevoked) again?

Just download and flash a rooted version. Don't bother taking the actual OTA update and risk not being able to root. The new bootloader that comes with the update is locked. You're better off just flashing the rooted version of the update, and eliminate any risk of not being able to get root back.
It is possible that if you remained S-off after the OTA, then you could reflash your recovery. I don't recommend that though, as a general rule of thumb, if you have any desire to root or remain rooted, then stay away from OTA's and just flash what the devs give us here.

That is the one I would flash. It's just the completely stock ROM, no modifications or anything. I would recommend doing a complete and full wipe before flashing this rom, just to make sure you get a totally clean flash.
Last November I rooted my T-Mobile G2 using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965&highlight=[guide]
I also installed Clockwork Mod.
I did not install any ROM, and I'm currently running otherwise-stock Android 2.2, build 1.22.531.8. I have ROM backups from Nov. 21 and March 21.
I'd like to install the 2.3 update (I've gotten the notification, but it won't execute, obviously), and have spent the last couple of days absorbing the various un-root guides posted here and around the tubes. The best un-root method appears to depend on which method was used to root the phone.
I've downloaded the PCI10 1.19.531.1 image, the stock_root image, and the stock recovery, and looking at the best way to move forward.
Is it necessary to undo all the modifications (S-off, HBoot, Recovery) before the update will self-apply?
If so, which un-root guide would you recommend for my phone?
Also, I'm running alogcat to try to get the download link - if I get that, should I try to update using Clockwork?
Thanks in advance.
Well currently there is no sure-fire way to root the OTA 2.3 release, so if you do choose to unroot and take the OTA you won't be able to get rooted again.
If you want 2.3 and still want to be rooted, you're best off either waiting for a pre-rooted OTA build that you can just flash to and not have to mess with the actual OTA, or you can use one of the AOSP-based 2.3 ROMs in the dev section.

Thanks.
But assuming I am OK with losing root, does anyone have a recommendation for which "back to full stock" guide to use?

You're okay with losing root only if you're okay with losing any of the features you use that required you to root it. If you rooted in order to overclock, you won't be able to anymore; if you rooted to get rid of the bloatware, you won't be able to anymore.

Now I'm not sure if this applies to all gingerbread otas, but you should always be able to go back again if you need to, since there's now a way to downgade and subsequently achieve root: Downgrade
OP:
I agree with martonikaj - I am doing what he suggests - just wait for someone to release a rooted version of this OTA update!

Yep, there's really no reason to get ancy and waste your time unrooting just to get a manufacturer release of 2.3, when you can have completely bone stock AOSP 2.3 right now and still be rooted.
And if you want the pre-rooted OTA version, you'll be able to get that soon too.
Thanks.

Anyone else trying to update stock to 4.53.651.1 but it fails to install? If you take the ota after revolutionarys unlock I can not install the update. I believe this is due to the hboot version. Which seems to be how they got around the locking in he first place.
Also where is the ota on the phone? I want to pull it off the phone and try a re ruu and install it again.

Have you checked Development section for the latest stock rom. Also why would you try to do an OTA after rooting. It may take away your root. Just wait it out or try a custom rom that probably has more than the stock 4.53 rom.
You rooted to get away from stock why go back when you now have options better than stock.
Rooted Stock Roms link here
Getting root back isn't a problem. I want a nandroid backup with the.latest. the original reason for me to root wasn't to run a custom Rom. It was to remove the extra bloatware.
But after being in the EVO for a few months now I am going to play with the other roms. I just wanted to see if the most recent update had any changes worth staying on stock.
I will most likely be going to cm7. Since that's what I have on my craptivate.

ok but still why unroot? Just download a rooted version and if you like remove the bloatware. going back to stock you loose options and gain bloat.
Stock rooted is better than Stock non rooted....all day everyday
The issue is your custom recovery, not custom hboot. Sprint OTAs depend on the stock recovery, which in layman's terms is a "fake" recovery. It can't be used by the user but the recovery knows what to do with the OTA packages.
Look around for a PC36IMG.zip of the stock Sprint recovery.img. I saw one the other day in the Dev section.
And the latest OTA is rootable, just to clear that up.

Oh and to answer your where does it download question...I believe in /data/tmp or /data/local/tmp, but i am not 100% sure. It believe it would be in one of the tmp folders for sure though.

I'm trying to revert a Sprint customers phone back to factory defaults so he can install the carrier patches and updates, is there a way to do this? would i need to unroot or just flash a stock rom?
just need to know where to start, any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated
Assuming it is rooted now, if you don't want it to be rooted, just flash a stock RUU, that will unroot and return you to stock. If you want it to stay rooted, just flash a stock rooted rom.

Is returning to stock and accepting the ota any different than just flashing the new firmware that @Sneakyghost puts up? I am not using a stock rom so is there something I need from the ota? I'm still new to the custom rom world and have never had the option before.
I know it's probably a dumb question but thanks for your guidance.
If you flash my full stock, wipe package, and then TWRP and some custom ROM afterwards, you'll have pretty much the same effect. If you're S-OFF, you have no need to go back to stock.

If your S-off, just use sneakyghost's files. The ruu/ota method is only necessary if you're S-on and your provider provides an update.
sweet thanks guys. I am s-off so I will just stick with using sneakyghost's files. So much easier than having to reconfigure everything. I just flashed the 2.8 DevEd firmware about an hour ago. no complaints so far. Will use t-mobile's when they come out with their update. I have a DevEd and an AT&T Ed but they are both connected to t-mobile. Both are s-off and on custom roms. Only reason why I want to use t-mobile's firmware is to use the wifi calling feature when I travel. Thanks again!
