Rooting for maximum battery life. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I love stock android, and never been to big into rooting nexus'. However, I am dreading a longer battery life, and i don't want to bigger battery because it would add bulk. I would like to know the best solution? Whether I should use a custom rom?
I have a GSM galaxy nexus.

Don't turn on your screen. Boom!
But seriously, modding can only do so much. It really comes down to your usage patterns.

The Samsung Extended battery adds two millimeters to the phone. Is that really that horrible?

There are official Samsung ones for both CDMA and GSM variants. Both are 200mAh (~14%) larger than their respective stock batteries.

I ordered a 2000mAh battery from MugenPower or something similar (Hongkong based I think). It´s the same physical size as the stock one. So it doens´t add any size at all.
I was having trouble getting used to the ****ty battery as well (coming from the old "brick-style phones"). But having rooted, tweaked, switched around and most of all learned how things work. I´ve more then doubled my battery time. So yeah, I´d recommend getting into it.
Does take some time reading up on things, but when you start getting the hang of things you can reap the rewards.
Beware though, you can easily turn into a flash-crack-head

You might want to check that it's actually 2000mah. One would think if Samsung could fit 2000mah into the same size battery they would.

root your phone and flash a custom rom if you dont like stock and I like franco's kernel for awesome performance and battery

Franco was nice but I still got better battery life from Lean kernel.

Oh and so you know what really kills the battery on the Nexus is browsing. Supposedly the white background on the majority of websites takes more power to render than a dark screen.

It's not that white takes more power to "render", its that AMOLED screens use the most power to produce the color white. When AMOLED screens create dark (or black) colors, they can actually turn the invidual LED's off, using less power. There's no backlight on an AMOLED screen that needs to be lit 100% of the time.
But really, a 720P AMOLED screen will take a lot of power up whenever it's on, whether you're gaming, browsing, or doing email. The screen is just a big power draw.

My unboxing of the Galaxy Nexus. Really liking this phone so far! Coming from an iPhone 4S and Nexus S, the GNex is unlike anything I've ever used. It definitely has the best display I've seen so far, slightly beating out the iPhone 4S. Hope you guys enjoy! If you want to see any specific videos let me know on here or on the video comments!
nice vid!.
thanks for posting
Love to see some battery results, especially battery drain while idle over a few hours (simulate a work day, gmail going, wifi off, 3g connected)
I took the phone off the charger when it got to 100% about 45 minutes ago. Now its at 80% but I had force hardware acceleration on. I really hope the battery adjusts and gets better because a 20% drain that fast is a little ridiculous.

The first few charges/discharges on Samsung batteries work wonders for battery life.
My Nexus S and SGSII had terrible battery life on the first few charges. Was concerning. After those initial cycles, the life was so much better. Got 2 days 16 hrs on my SGSII just prior to my GNEX arriving this Friday morning.
The GNEX is on 11 h 50m now and has 25 minutes left. Charged it when FedEx delivered it at 11am mountain today. I'd say that's pretty great as I've been using the hell out of it since it arrived. I expect subsequent charges to add to the life and am not worried one bit about getting a full day out of it (par for the course - it's not a flip-phone).

Is your Galaxy S II on the stock kernel/rom? I can't wait to install a custom kernel on this bad boy. Developers are saying the stock kernel really isn't that good. I'm also noticing a good bit of heat generating from around the camera during normal usage.

Is it the "Force GPU rendering...Use 2D hardware acceleration in applications" setting? That doesn't sound like hardware acceleration...it sounds like a setting to force apps that aren't ICS coded to run faster. Or maybe the OS is hardware accelerated but apps aren't?
Why would hardware acceleration be disabled out of the box? That's one of the most anticipated features of ICS...

It isn't disabled by default. The entire OS and all ICS optimized apps are hardware accelerated by default. Older apps that haven't been optimized for ICS may not have hardware acceleration, so there's an option to force it until the developer optimizes the app for ICS.

Thanks! On medium to high brightness, whites look okay. I want to say mine have a slight reddish tint but its so faint that it won't bother me. All displays have some kind of tint. On low brightness whites tend to look a little grainy but its nothing to stress about.

GSM Nexus Battery Life. Worth leaving SGS with CM9 for it?

So I currently have a Vibrant that has CM9 installed and the thing rocks! My battery life is pretty good for moderate to heavy use, and gets me through at least a full work day.
As we all know the Galaxy Nexus GSM is now on sale for $399 straight from google, and I am very tempted to get one. I have read ALL OVER the net that the battery life sucks, I have seen tests done that show it only gets 3 hrs MAX of surf time, gets a decent 8 hrs of talk, and about 6 hrs of video, each tested with a fully charged battery.
SO my question is, is it worth it? Is the battery life as bad as they say? Or will it be better than what I have on my SGS?
Also, how do the picture quality compare to say... and Iphone 4s, etc.
Thanks for your feedback, I am sure it will help more than just me

Do you need a 4.6 inch screen or not? If so, you gotta deal with the consequences of powering such a screen.
For what it's worth, I went from Captivate > Nexus S > Galaxy Nexus and I feel as if the battery life were all the same ball park.

True, it does seem I wouldn't see much of a difference either way I go. The bigger screen is nice, plus the HD display, and the better camera and added flash, front facing camera, and the major factor is the PRICE POINT!
That is a perfect price point for this phone, I have that itch!!
Standy by time is great. Better than my old sensation 4g. Which had decent battery life to begin with.
My battery can last more than a full day, with the screen on for 4+ hours with a couple hours of streaming music, email, etc.
I think most of the complaints are from the LTE version, and pre software updates that may have helped.
Compared to my sgs4g I get about the same on stock battery. With a qcell 2050 mAh battery I get about an extra 2 hours give or take.

i never considered the gsm gnex to have bad battery life even on stock
you can get much better battery life with a custom kernel installed. i can get 2 days of what i consider normal use (phone calls, losts of sms, some mms, facebook, twitter, games on the ****ter ... ) using GLaDOS kernel.
as previously mentioned the majority of the battery woes come from the battery sucking lte antennas ... all lte phones have this issue and really require new battery technology imo
I upgraded from SGS running CM7.1 to GSM GNex in November..
With my Galaxy S I rarely went a full day without having to plug it in for a charge.
With my GNex I have never plugged it in for a charge during the day, and usually have 40-50% battery left before bed (2h screen time). SGN rocks!

ics leak rom (CWM flashable)

I know I'm new here but I just got a nitro HD but the battery life is disappointing me (came from a Vibrant) I'm running CM9 7/8 with the HO!NO! kernel V5 right now. I wanted to try the ICS leak by HO!NO! because some say they have better battery life there but the download link isn't working for me.
Does anyone have a mirror? or tips to get better battery? (without the extended battery, that's my last resort)
Thanks in advance
Battery life has been disappointing me too. I'm using ICS Leak non HO!NO! but hopeless.
Won't stand a day without charing.
I have to carry charger everywhere I go.
Extended Battery is the best idea. But I have to sacrifice my Ballistic Case.
I got an extended battery two days ago from Ebay for $15 but unfortunately I got a defect one. Waiting for a replacement.
Dang that sucks... thanks for the reply man. I have a ballistics case too (came with the phone b/c I bought it off Craigslist), good thing I don't use it.
I guess I'll have to invest in an extended battery then. Might go with the Hyperion one, seems like it has decent reviews
Have you tried running CM9 without HO!NO!'s kernel? Though I appreciate his work, I've been just using the built-in kernel lately (mostly out of laziness) and I don't have any battery life complaints really, although I admit I'm not the most active user.
Oh damn, seriously? I'll give that a try. Thanks for the tip. hope it works =)
Honestly, you should get a second battery and/or external charger. These large, beautiful screens and LTE radios are power hungry. There's not a ROM or kernel for any high-end phone that will go a day with heavy usage. You need cpu spy and better battery stats to weed out wake locks, but even then there's no magic pill. I've found screen on time is the best metric for knowing how long you can last. With this phone it seems to be 3-4 hours. IPhone 4S and Windows aren't much better.

I used SetCPU and set it to not go over 1026mhz. I also turn off GPS when I'm not using it. My battery life has almost tripled.
If you're using CM9, there are a lot of tweaks you can do to help with battery. Take a look at HO!NO!'s Full throttle post as he makes some suggestions. In my experience it's generally been the screen that eats all of my battery. You can tweak the brightness settings to be slightly dimmer to see if that helps.
You could also look into Juice defender. Never used it myself but I've heard people have great success with it
---------- Post added at 05:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:40 PM ----------
You could also check out this post for Battery life tips for the ICS leak. It looks like underclocking + CPU Sleeper + tweaking screen brightness will help improve your battery the most
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781762
In the past few weeks I've ran the ICS Leak, stock CM9 RC1 and CM9 RC2 with Juice Defender. For me, the best battery was the ICS Leak, RC2 w/JD being second best but not as stable. RC1 is essentially an unplugged drain when it comes to preserving battery life. Out of the blue the phone would be hot to the touch and shedding battery, just sitting in my pocket.
I also just got the extended battery, its bigger and heavier but you get used to it pretty fast, I don't mind it at all. In fact, the new back cover is of better quality than the one that came with the phone. It fits better and feels more sturdy. That plus the added weight actually gives it a better feel, for me at least.
thanks for the responses everyone
Nitro battery got better for me after a week or so of usage on the stock (I'm guessing it took some usage for the rom to calibrate the battery readings properly) but I ended up getting the extended battery anyways (hyperion) and I love it
At first it was kind of bulky and big to me, but like some of you say it was easy to get used to. Battery life is amazing now on CM9 RC2. I'm at 1 day and 3 hrs with airplane mode on, wifi on (wifi phone for me), and 2hrs and 32min screen time. Battery is now at 53%

Mugen battery for S3

I bought a Mugen battery for my S3 and am currently testing it out. Rooted, stock ROM.
I charged it and then discharged it until the phone stopped. The put it on charge again with the phone on - as recommended by Mugen - for about 9 hours (as recommended).
I supose that it hasn't be an especially heavy usage day but still, after 9 hours of very light use the battery still show 88%. Amazing.
Battery usage wasn't a real issue for me anyway. On a standard battery with heavy use I could get through a whole day quite easily - which compared to my HTC desire HD was fantastic. The HTC realy needed a Mugen battery. Anyway, I decided to fork out the price - $44 -ouch! and it looks as if it will be a very good battery indeed.
I'm going to do a full discharge again and then long recharge. At this rate, I expect it to take at least a couple of days - maybe three to get it to 0%.
After a few cycles, I may even have a four day battery - certainly a 3 day battery.
We'll see.
30 hours later - light use - reading papers, some email, some calls - 65% left
Can you put here screenshots with battery usage and screen-on figure ?
My regular battery was on 87% after 16 hours of very light use yesterday.
Need battery stats, screen stats etc. as everyone's definition of light use changes!

I consider 1 hour's use as light use.
My light use over a much longer period was "light" compared to a heavy use when I might be checking and writing emails several times an hour, checking my twitter account and posting in my forum several times durring the day.
Whatever "light use" means - the new Mugen battery is very much better than my standard battery with mr normal light use.
I don't think that it is worth this thread getting into discussion about what is "light use".
I shouldn't have used the phrase.
What I want to say is that the Mugen battery is substantially better.
I still don't know if it was worth the $44 - because that is really very expensive for a battery - especially for me when battery usage wasn't a particular issue - unlike the DHD which was badly spoiled by the poor battery life
Thank's for this information.
Can you post one picture showing the back and one side of the phone. I think the Mugen Power Battery is fatter than the genuine one.
What looks like the galaxy s3 now ?
sorry - I don't have time t do that. It is a standard size and fits complet;y under the standard cover.
I think that ther is amore powerful Mugen battery which does need a special cover - but mine is a standard size 2300ma
1 hour 20 mins use and 65%? That's really not very impressive at all. That equates to about 4 hours screen time which is quite easy to achieve on the stock battery. It's certainly not worth the inflated price.
---------- Post added at 03:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:50 PM ----------
For comparison a cheap $15 4500 mah battery gives me 45 hours with 7 hours screen time. Here are some screenshots

No problem. If it has a standard shape and size, it's perfect.
I've already seen Mugen battery with high capacity (more than 4000mAh) which added 5mm on each side.

Ah, another Photon refugee. Hope to see you have the same impact here as you did in the Photon forum. I am at 33+ hours with 71% battery remaining and Zdbox says that I still have >50 hours left (I sure as hell don't believe that). That being said, I am running a Hyperion 4200mah battery that has been great. I also have 54 frozen apps (including TouchWiz - I use ADW) and that has to help. Yesterday I downloaded Easy Battery Saver and am running it in intelligent mode and that seems to have had a large impact. We all know that battery life is a fragile thing and personal usage has the biggest influence. I don't use the phone alot, I am not on any social media and I'm usually on wifi. I'm sure that is a factor even though I'm on the Web a lot. Frankly, I' so happy with the setup that I'm currently running that I have not found a compelling reason to install a custom ROM.
Also, I don't auto update anything just to make sure that I update only on wifi.
Dschoms, I have no doubt at all this has a huge impact on it. I am always on my social media and what not. So again, sure that plays a role.
As for the battery, is that one of the thick ones? Like the extended one for the Evo?
And I was quite active on the Photon forums mostly testing and some aiding. Though most of that was working on kernels with Joker. But I'll help where I can.
And thanks for everyones input thus far. Appreciate it.

Yeah, it does approximately double the thickness of the phone, but the replaceable battery was the determing factor for getting the S3 over the HTC. I use the GPS a fair amount and the larger battery was more desireable. Actually there were two things that I disliked about thd S3. One was the thinness and the other was the slickness of the case. I think the thicker battery gives the phone a better feel in my large hand. As for the slickness, I went to Home Depot and purchase an aerosol can of Plasti-Dip and coated the battery cover with a rubberized coating. Now I have a heftier phone with a non-slip surface and insane battery life. (2 days and two hours on the current charge with a THEORETICAL 55% and 32 hours lefT, LOL)
That's super rad. I may have to look into that non slip grip idea. Sounds like a good plan. Thanks for the info.

Battery life is going to vary by user. EVERYONE uses the phone for different things.. So the person who occasionally text, looks something up may get extensive battery life, but a user who's online quite a bit.. Syncing FB, Emails constantly, will kill battery quicker. So it's a matter of making adjustments to conserve if that's what you prefer... Screen brightness to dimmer setting, Screen off at 15 Secs inactivity, Email sync to longer duration between, FB sync off, Little things like that will increase the life overall. Programs like Juice defender work awesome as well. leaving the network connected when not in use is a huge battery drain.. send to airplane mode or turn off data will help. I've done these things on all my Galaxy (EPIC). Do a search, you'll see some tips around here..
Yeah I'm akways on my phone. Sending e-mails and texts and all that jazz. Thanks.

I use juice defender to help when i have my screen off, it'll disable data. (Can still get text messages just no email sync and such) turns back on with screen on. But it's all on the usage.. Can always invest in an extended life battery if you feel the urge. Makes the phone a bit thicker.. but gives ya longer battery life.
Yeah. I'm not super worried about the battery life and what not. Was just curious.
