I noticed this annoying problem while I am driving under the guidance of Navigation. Google Navigation will drop out of "navigation mode." The screen will dim and I have to tap the blue arrow to get into "navigation mode" again. The problem happens intermittently when I am on the open road with no signal 3G/4G signal drops--I run the No Signal app--and no GPS losses.
Why does this happen? Thanks.

My apologies if this is discussed elsewhere, but I have not been able to find the answer.
While using Google Maps Navigation with the phone's screen off it seems to shut off the gps receiver as it tells me GPS signal has been lost about 30 seconds after the screen turns off. As soon as I turn the screen back on it reacquires satellites and resumes navigation. I like to keep the screen off so the nice robot lady can tell me which way to go and I am not tempted to constantly look at my phone screen. If anyone knows if this is normal or a way to keep gps on while navigating I would appreciate the info.
Resolution?
Did anyone ever respond? I have the same issue myself.
After I turn on GPS and launch an application that uses it (e.g., Maps), I get a notification that the phone is "Searching for GPS." At first this icon is a circle that kind of looks like cross-hairs without the center filled in. After a little while (varies), the center of the circle starts blinking and it is still "Searching for GPS." When GPS lock is achieved, the circle in the center stops blinking.
What is the difference between the two "Searching" icons? The one with the blinking solid circle and the one without. There have been times when I cant get GPS lock and it never proceeds to the blinking stage.
thanks,
I'm in the same boat, it's frustrating.
i managed to install this deodexed rom and it managed to solve the issue...full data, cache and dalvik wipe recommended
As of yesterday, I have been experiencing an issue where the GPS on my phone will suddenly turn itself on. Where the problem started persisting was when I was without signal in a basement. I checked my phone and it kept showing the GPS icon on the notification bar. To make sure that i'm not going insane, I left my screen on with the screen opened on the location services, and the button would just automatically switch to the ON position.
Now, I have full signal, performed a soft reset, and still sometimes when I get a call or a text the GPS icon will appear. I know for a fact, that I have been turning it off and have watched it turn itself back on with no command. Any ideas?
The GPS on my Note 4 was a deal breaker. It wouldn't stay locked while in motion. For example when I would be driving with audible turn by turn navigation on, I would get the dreaded "GPS signal lost" alert after just a few seconds in motion and it wouldn't lock back on until I was stationary again. Then it would lose signal after I started moving. How is the GPS on the Note 7?
It's pretty good on Pokémon Go lol. I haven't used it for Waze yet.
The navigation app (HERE and OsmAnd) don't receive positions when navigation is started and the screen is off for more than some minutes. Everything is fine when the screen is on and every thing is fine if I switch on the screen for some seconds every minute. Icons of the navigation apps is visible in the statusbar so background navigation with screen off should work. Switching off the battery optimizations had no effect. I read here that background location behaviour changed in Oreo. Can some body tell me which services are required for navigation except the location provider? How is it possible to prevent the location provider from stopping providing locations when the screen switches off?
