[Q] Ugly font rendering on Kindle Fire - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The font rendering on my Kindle Fire is horrendous. I'm running twa_priv's May 23 build of Vanilla CM9. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a CM9 issue affecting a lot of devices, or is it something specific to the Kindle Fire? Do other roms have the same problem?
I can post screenshots if desired, but they don't do the problem justice.

Roms with almost no bugs or not so noticeable ones for Kindle Fire

Does anybody know a good rom with almost no bugs or ones that are not to noticeable. I would like to get ICS 4.0.4
I am currently running MoDaCo gr8

After reading this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638617) I started with gedeROM, and like it a lot. There are potentially some quirks w/ USB mass storage but that seems to be more of a drivers issue, not a ROM one (I simply had to uninstall the drivers, unplug/plug back in the Fire and my Windows 7 laptop reinstalled the drivers w/o problems). USB xfer is a little slow, known/already reported issue. Charging LED doesn't stay lit but it does charge, that might be a kernel thing.. Lockscreen customization is a nice plus too. Latest build also has the theme engine included, but I haven't used it since i like the stock theme.
I've tried Reloaded, AOKP and Gummy, all of which are very nice too, but I ended up sticking w/ gedeROM. For my usage, there are no issues.
I would recommend that you try each, over time. In general they're all similar but each have their own unique visual/functional touches that differentiate them from the others.
I like the gedeROM
But I cant get it to connect to my iPhone wifi hotspot
something about ICS not supporting ad hoc
For me, it's a toss up between gederom or Hashcode's ROM. Gederom seems to have better functionality, like the true full screen and lack of airplane mode, but Hashcode's ROM offers a wider array of available apps. If you like Game loft games, however, gederom is the way to go.
gedeROM is now my daily driver and it rocks! Tried Energy and it was good too but gedeROM seems more complete at this time.
Thanks but is there any way to get kindle owners lending library on the gedeRom

I Really like MoDaCo, because it just works beautifully, but gederom just looks wonderful, so I'm living with a few of the bugs for now: charging issue (slow; no charge indicator on power button), power drains a bit fast, USB Mass Storage connectivity issue (just boot into TWRP for USB transfers for now), a few unnoticeable sound and DSP issues. No Prime video, but so what... I have Netflix -- you could also try Crackle, it's free.

Just flash the latest kernel after flashing the ROM, to be sure you have the latest kernel.

I have an "allow only" MAC list in my router with my kindle's MAC in it, and after switching to gederom from MoDaCo, I didn't have to change anything, so it's not an issue, I guess.

+1 for gedeROM, I have been enjoying it for over a week now. I was on EnergyROM prior and liked it a lot too.
For stability and lack of bugs I have found CM7 to be pretty reliable.
The ICS ROMs all seem to have similar kernel issues.
gedeROM very stable lots of features.

Your not a brony are you?
So I just tried running Jandycane, Hellfire, and CM10 w/ SGT7 today. Jandycane is pretty, but I had a hell of a time with the status bar and it didn't have the latest CM10 enhancements. CM 10 w/ SGT7 has the most updates, however for some reason KFU does not recognize it when in ADB mode. Hellfire has a bit older CM10 version, but otherwise works perfectly. For now I'm on Hellfire but I suspect CM 10 w/ SGT7 will become the best one over time as updates are made.
CM10 w/ SGT7 it is!

Well so far I really love CM10 w/ SGT7! Way more stable than JandyCane! I can open Chrome and Instagram also! So far every app runs and works great! A lot more tweaks too....
CM10 w/ SGT7 should come up with a catchy name for it so it gets more recognition...

Rooted and looking at Custom ROMs (Possibly Jellybean)

UPDATED:
As of right now I still have yet to add a custom rom. I was wondering since a little bit of time passed and priorities have changes slightly, which current rom (running ICS or JB for Kindle Fire) is the fastest (or smoothest running) while maintaining a decent battery life.
Current Wish List:
- ICS or JB (I have JB on my Razr M so I don't necessarily need it. Whichever performs best with the below wish list works for me.)
- Maintains closest to stock battery life
- No problems playing Netflix or the like (I understand the Amazon Instant Video app won't work)
- Smooth and fast. (Doesn't need to be the fastest as battery life will win out on this for me)
When I choose one to finally use, are there good step by step guides I can follow for installing a custom rom? Rooting couldn't have been simpler, but I'm aware that installing a custom rom is a little more work.
ORIGINAL:
So I rooted my Fire a couple months ago now and am happy I did so. However I have grown more interested in possibly installing a custom ROM and noticed that the options are plentiful. I have bookmarked plenty of possibilities including CM7 and gedeROM. But I have been increasingly interested in possibly upgrading to a Jellybean ROM. Being somewhat uninformed as to what it is that I am looking for exactly here are some of the things that I would like if possible in a Custom Rom and maybe someone can direct me as to which one may work the best for my needs:
- Stability. I don't know if there is a pretty stable Jellybean ROM currently. But things like being able to rotate the screen and just general Android functions present.
- No charging problems. (For some reason my stock Fire cord no longer charges my Kindle.. yet it still charges my cellphone. Now using a blackberry playbook charger for the Fire that works great and is considerably longer than the stock Fire cord.)
- No problems playing Netflix. Video and entertainment are top priorities.
- Possibly a deal breaker. Would really like to be able to play Amazon Prime videos. I'm able to play them rooted through the use of RootKeeper currently, but have my doubts if RootKeeper would work as it does now, with a custom rom.
- Would love to be able to use Photoshop Touch, but from what I have read this probably isn't possible with a Kindle Fire
- I realize battery life may not be what it is right now, but I would like a semi-decent battery life if at all possible.
There may be some other things I'd like that I can't think of right now but those are some of the ones that I have kept in my mind. I may not even really need Jellybean and there may be an option that makes more sense for me right now, but it would just be nice to be running on the most updated Android version and wouldn't mind some of it's features like Chrome. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just shopping around!

Oh that sounds great! Gonna check it out! I didn't think it was possible to keep Prime on any of the custom roms. But TWA_priv's CM10 sounds pretty nice thanks so much! Is there any kind of workaround for Prime? Like, going to the Prime website on the browser?

I had a similar question and just reread my own thread and someone had mentioned dual booting. Is this something that is easy and viable? Or is it something more for the more advanced users?
Dual booting is advanced.
Dual-booting meaning able to run Amazon's native rom as well as a custom rom? If that was possible and allowed me to keep access to the Amazon Instant Video app, then I would go for it.

From what I read, twa_priv's was one of the simplest, cleanest, best working roms out there. It was the main rom I was/am considering.

[Q] Need help finding a Fire HD ROM

I'm in the market for a tablet for my mother. Most of the tablets with great hardware lack an SD slot or HDMI or both. The Kindle Fire HD 32GB seems like the best combination of hardware & optionals but comes with the bastardized OS. I want to completely format the Fire HD & install the latest Android OS. 4.2 I believe it is. I don't want dual boot, modded ROMs or anything fancy, just the stock Android ROM installed on the Fire HD. She plays games, checks email & surfs the net. I could do all that with the stock Amazon OS but a lot of apps either don't work with it or just aren't available. I know not all apps are tablet friendly but with the huge assortments of apps available I'm sure I can find alternatives.
So, my questions are:
1. Is there a Stock Android ROM available for the Kindle Fire HD? The 7" version (NOT the 8.9).
2. If there is, could someone please link me to it? I've tried searching the forums but the results were just a cluttered mess of questions, development discussions, & 1st gen ROMs.
3. Is there a better 7" tablet I should be looking at in the $200-$250 range? It must have HDMI, bluetooth, WiFi, SD slot, USB (micro-b) & a 3.5mm.
If anyone has comments or suggestions I welcome them. I've installed Roms on cell phones so the process is not new to me.
1. I don't know for sure but I strongly believe so.
2. You're in the wrong forum, m8. Search for the Fire HD (within XDA) and look from there.
3. Better in term of what? personal preference? If I said the Nexus 7 is better, KF fanboys will eat me alive

ROM recommendations for Kindle Fire 7 "tate"

The Kindle Fire tablets are an impressive amount of hardware for the price -- but I'd rather not run the Amazon software stack, which is designed to isolate users in Amazon's "walled garden" ecosystem in order to consume Amazon-provided media content. (Which is fine for most people, and perfectly fits what they want to do. Just not me.)
What I'd really like to do is install a reasonable, straightforward pure-Android setup on a Fire tablet, then use the device for simple tasks like reading books, web browsing, and email. I can't be the only one; this seems like an incredibly cost-efficient way to set up a basic Android tablet -- Kindle Fires go for prices as low at $35 during sales. And it's plenty of hardware for reading recipes in the kitchen, or books in bed, or running the Sonos controller app in the livingroom. And, of course, the most recent the Android, the better.
A few years ago, I did exactly this: I installed TWRP & Cyanogenmod on a Kindle Fire 7 "tate", which worked fine. But CM is no longer, and my setup is suffering bit rot. These days, it mostly just errors out, complains about trebuchet failing, and shows an annoying tv-shaped blue robot-head icon in the center of a radiating circle... whatever that indicates.
Now there is LineageOS. I'd like to update my setup to a more modern Android install. So I go to the lineageos.org web site, but the "devices" page has no entries any Amazon hardware. None at all. This has been true for quite a while.
So, this leaves me with some questions.
What's the story on LineageOS and the Kindle Fire? LineageOS has
now been around for over three years and four or five releases
(LineageOS 13-17 or Android 6-10).
What's the right OS / ROM to run on a Kindle Fire 7 tate today, in 2020?
I've currently got CyanogenMod 12.1 / Android 5.1 Lollipop on my Fire,
which is quite old. What is the most recent thing that is stable and
functional (as opposed to something bleeding edge that crashes and
has holes in its functionality)?
(My bootloader and TWRP work just fine on my tate, so I really just
need to know what the right ROM & gapps is, I guess.)
As long as I'm asking, what's the right OS / ROM to provide straight
Android functionality on the current Kindle Fire tablets (7, HD 8
and HD 10) being sold?
Can anyone provide me with some guidance?
Thanks.
