Google Voice all Biffed up (resovled) - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I just dropped my soon to be ex wife from my shared plan....Sprint changed my plan and the lady told me i would have to set GV back up...So I uninstalled it, redownloaded it and set it back up. But now It will not receive text through GV, I can send, but it returns through the stock app. I have verified the settings, tried another fresh install of the app, rebooted....anything I could think of!!
Any ideas?
So the damn foreign sprint rep...
worthless...ended up cussing him out, who knows if he really understood what i called him...
In the end, i had to go into the voice account on the ole laptop, delete my number from there, un install from the phone, and to be safe I used ROMtoolbox and cleared app data and cache. Then I reinstalled from the phone and it synced the desktop version. No help from sprint...He said that when the plan changed the system had to removed google voice...thats all he could manage to tell me.

Sweet rant bro.
Seriously, its a setting. On the first setup screen, hit skip. Then once you get past the rest of the setup, go into the app and change the delivery method from stock app to GV. Enjoy!

it is a setting.. just required logging into your gv from the computer to remove your cell number from the account and reloading the application.. you couldnt have removed your number from the phone.. or maybe a browser in desktop mode.. either way ive seen the answer to your question in other threads.. glad you fixed it.. i never use my gv number with my sprint number.. i use gv with a sip client and use both numbers seperately for calls and sms

Deleted Gtalk -- Easiest fix?

I uninstalled Google Talk (accidentally) via Titanium Backup. Obviously a decent screw up as it kills a lot of services without it.
I tried searching for a posted apk, but no luck. Tried extracting it from the roms used in toasts root method, but failed.
I'm an idiot. Flame away, but help, please.

You're not an idiot because you made a mistake...you're not an idiot period.
I removed it too and I just downloaded damage control, unzipped it, went through the folders, and grabbed gtalkservice.apk out of it, pushed it to my phone and voila...buttt I attached it for you anyhow...
Cheers, mate. I'll give it a shot now.
EDIT: ooo, I love you. If you're ever in Gainesville, FL, I'll buy you a beer. Just PM me! hah
This could be a stupid question but humor me please. What is google talk for??? I've set it up to not activate automaticly but it does anyways killing my battery. Is it needed?
It's a messaging app, like instant messenger type. I don't know if you can actually delete the apk without problems occurring. I wouldn't imagine it eats too much of your battery though.
GTalk as system service
I feel the same as the original poster.....like an idiot.
I deleted the GTalk application as I was not using it and was trying to free up more space. However, I started receiving the "com.google.process.gapps" error soon thereafter.
In looking through forums and the internet, it appears that is a very common error with many causes. However, having the android sdk, it was suggested to use adb to get a bugreport.
In looking at my bugreport, I saw a lot of references to calls to the GTalk service. It is an underlying system service and it appears used by other apps as well. For example, I noticed that my GMail was not syncing consistently and I found myself manually refreshing to get it to sync.
I also noted that almost without fail, when I installed new apps in the Marketplace, I would see the "com.google.process.gapps" error.
My recommendation: Keep GTalk on your phone!
i did the same thing.
What does it mean to push a file to your phone? I dragged into onto my sd card and it still is giving me errors in the marker and constantly syncing...
Help!
This may sound really dumb but how do i go about installing the apk file? it tells me that im not allowed to cuz Google talk isnt referenced in the android market
Google services on your phone rely heavily on GTalk, as you guys are seeing. Even if you don't use it you need to keep it if you want to use pretty much any google apps such as the market, gmail, etc.
To install just put the apk on your sdcard, navigate to it using your favorite file explorer and click on it. Your phone has an installer that will recognize the apk as such and ask you if you want to install it.
Because RavenII was kind enough to post the apk you guys should be able to do all of this right from your phones.
*edit- I don't think it will be a problem but if you are not rooted you might get hung up on the install... wait a second.. if you're not rooted then you wouldn't have been able to remove it in the first place haha
I uninstalled Gtalk and everything is still working fine on my Evo no problems here.

This is a true statement. I am running DC 3.5.
My bad, I was navigating to the wrong file. Up and working now.
Is google voice important? I uninstalled that and I am having issues getting voicemail but I dont think its because of google voice. I was messing with voicemail the last few days and now I cant get it to work.

GVoice is awesome, I use it and love it so I'm curious why you got rid of it but NO, it is not critical to anything on your phone, you can get along just fine without it.
If you were using gvioce and now you are not then you need to be sure you've done the following:
-Dial *38 and hit send. The call will drop and your gvoice line will be disassociated with your phone
-Under menu>settings>call_settings>voicemail_service make sure it is set to "my carrier"
-Under menu>settings>call_settings>voicemail_settings make sure your Voicemail number is set to your cellphone number
That should get you up and running.
I will offer this: I don't know what caused you to decide not to use gvoice but I had tons of problems with my Sprint voicemail service interfering with gvoice. I called Sprint and had them actually remove voicemail service from my account. GVoice has been flawless since then.
Looks like a spoke too soon. Sync keeps getting stuck at the google contacts part, gives me an error saying "sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly."
Anybody know what gtalk (or any other critial programs) has to do with this?

lol, I almost posted that you must have some special setp because you would be the first.. but I didn't want to sound like an a-hole..
I don't know specifically what it is in gtalk that maintains google services, it's probably the program they use to maintain the google accounts database..
Correct me if im wrong, but I thought there was a thread that confirmed that in froyo Gtalk isn't really necessary in order for all the other Gapps to run correctly. I know for sure I don't have Gtalk installed and everything is working fine in my Evo.

How do I forward calls to my google voice number? My carrier is google voice and my voice mail number is my google voice number. If you call my phone number it doesnt forward to google voice voice mail. However if you call my google voice mail number and leave me a voice mail I get a Gvoice message. So its working so why not stick with it. I originaly didnt want to use it because i had to sign in and I didnt want it wasting battery lol.
Edit; Never mind I think i was expecting the wrong number to forward lol its working. I guess this means I will have to give everyone my google voice number now. I was kinda hoping I could forward my number to my google voice number. Or can I after typing this edit I confused my self great lol.

I got fed up and reflashed DC3.5.

Voicemail won't work on new roms?

I've been on vaelpak for a while because it was fairly stable and didn't give me too many problems. But it wouldn't pick up gps and crash when I tried to update google maps. So I jumped ship to the almighty cyanogenmod. It was cool except for the fact that angry birds wouldn't install and it was using the stock camera, but I fell in love with how quick it loaded pics. Then I saw it didn't have visual voicemail and when people called it only said try again later, no message leaving. so I tried google voice, but when it asks to call to get a special provisioning number, it hangs up every time at three seconds. Finally I gave up and found frost rom, seemed like a dream.. Htc camera, voicemail app included, aosp look. Still voicemail didn't work. Still when I try to use voice it hangs up after exactly 3 seconds. What can I do? I want to eventually use cyanogenmod when 4g and gingerbread are running, so its imperative I get this fixed

With a non-sense ROM you have to use google voice. Its supposed to hang up, right after it hangs up press the back button and it should finish up the process. Then go into your settings and set google voice as your default voicemail. It will email you when you receive an email, then it will download the voicemail to the music folder of your phone and then you can listen to it only on speaker phone which is a pain in the ass.

Make sure you never blocked the text number from cyanogen roms. If you went to sprints website and blocked that number your VM wont work, go to sprints website and delete that blocked number.
If this helped please hit the thank you button.

Can you explain a little further what you are taliking about here. I just made the switch to CM6 but I am in sales and can not afford to miss a voice mail. I used an app to block an SMS message from 9016 but I don't think you are talking about the same thing.
I just instaled visual voicemail from titanium backup. Worked like a charm except for the annoying text messages I had to blacklist from handcent.

(Q)Contacts Syncing Problem

Last night I updated my wife's Epic to DK28. The problem is her contacts are gone and syncing doesn't bring them back. Why wouldn't they have saved to her gmail am I overlooking something. I have flashed my phones a lot and never had this issue.
Sent from my SPH-M900 using XDA App
check google/contacts online and see if her contacts are listed there. My wife had a similar problem and turns out when she added a contact she added them to her phone address book and not google.
http://www.google.com/contacts
They are not there is there a way to add them to Google after they are back in the phone?
Sent from my SPH-M900 using XDA App
can you get them back on the phone? Are there a lot of them?
I had a similar problem on the syndicate rom a while ago. It would say it was syncing for a second then stop. I also noticed when i went to facebook.com and tried to install the app from there it thought my phone was something other than the epic. I resolved the issue by using a different ROM. I don't know if these things are related, but that might be a start...
Yeah luckily we found her old phone and transferred thru bluetooth but I am tryin to figure out how to get them to google in case this happens again. As far as the rom she was totally stock di18 not even rooted for 5 weeks and I updated her to unrooted dk28.

You should be able to export them from contacts via the import/export menu option. This will create a file named something like 00001.vcf(vCard file) in sdcard/external_sd/. Then go to the google contacts and import it. Hope that helps!

Just make sure when she adds any new contacts that she adds them to google.
Stupid question but she does have syncing turned on in her contacts right? After they're restored try to force sync, then check her google account from a desktop/laptop to see if it worked.
I've not had much luck with the import export v card feature. I recently had to delete all contacts on my phone, then go to my google account via desktop, export all contacts to google.csv, delete all contacts online, then reinstall online from the google.csv file in order to fix a syncing problem.
Sent from my SPH-D700
I think google may be having an issue at the moment. My phone is saying that Sync is currently offline and will be back shortly.
Yeah her sync is on I just don't get what happened. I have reflashed my epic about 10 times without issue. And my moment ugh probably 75-100. Never lost contacts it has been automatic since I got my first android.

After my last rom flash I had a situation where any time I added a contact on the phone it got deleted after syncing. No idea why but a google search lead me to others that had the same issue.
I think this OS still has a lot to be ironed out. I wish they'd stop adding features and just make a decent contacts app. I can't for the life of me figure out why I have to select which of the same four phone numbers I want to dial when I try to call a contact that is synced to multiple accounts, for example.
Sent from my SPH-D700
sometimes when i have synching issues, i fix it by going into 'manage applications' and clearing the data for that app. i've had to do that with gmail.... it erases and re-synchs the app, and afterwards it works like normal. of course, only do it if she does indeed have her contacts backed up on Google... otherwise they will be gone. not sure if this will fix hers, but just saying it did fix my synching issues a few times.

So ... was there a question? lol. Are you trying to ask how to fix that?
Try clearing the cache of the voicemail application. settings > applications > manage applications
I was having this same issue after foolishly trying Gvoice (no I wont use it for texts and calls), anyways, I looked and I had no cache to delete in the VM app, but I cleared data, that triggered it to 'check account settings'... prompted me to make a personalized greeting etc... so that may do the trick...
I had the same problem. I actually unistalled it using titanium backup, the reinstalled it. (Took the new working one from regeneration 1.1.1 using astro file manager. Didn't extract it. Just went into the rom zip. Then system,apps,cm-provider (something like that.)and installed it) Worked perfect for me.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
If you are on any Gingerbread ROM the voicemail app was not included with the leak. When I restored Froyo's version on my GB it started a serious battery drain so I removed it. Youmail is a good substitute.
After having VVM issues on GB I.switched over to GVoice. Its pretty good IMO.

Looking for SMS backup

I used to use SMS backup plus to save texts from the ex wife to my gmail account. On my OG EVO it worked perfect. With the LG Optimus G it doesn't save incoming texts to my gmail account, only outbound. First, does anyone know a fix for this?
If there is no fix, can anyone suggest another app that will backup texts to my gmail? Currently, I'm using the stock messaging app, but not opposed to a 3rd party app like go sms pro. As long as I can specify which thread to backup to my gmail. Would like it to have a nice popup option too when the screen if off (like SMS Popup), but that is just a nice option not needed.
I like to backup these texts from her in case she decides to try some funny court stuff, or doesn't remember agreeing to something related to our child. It's a safety measure.
Thanks.
I have been using that app with success, it backs up inbound and outbound in order on my gmail... Thats weird, what rom are you on?

I have used this and it works.
My personal recommendation is Google Voice. While it doesn't restore messages to your phone, it will keep a record of every single text message sent/received that can also be accessed online.
As a tech, SMS Backup is a nightmare. I can't count the number of times a phone has come in with thousands of text messages (the record is 43K messages) that barely boots because of it.
The customer has SMS Backup installed and after we spend the time doing a hard reset they then restore the text messages. Now all that time was wasted as the phone needs to be hard reset yet again and it's somehow our fault. In some cases where there is a tin of messages, SMS Backup corrupts messages and messaging app data.
Now that I've given my $0.02, if you are going to use a backup app, try "Super Backup". It's backups are very similar to the Cellebrite machine that we techs use to backup contacts and text messages. I've even been able to restore messages on the Cellebrite using a "Super Backup" SMS backup file.
From the Super Backup thread;
"You can backup apps & contacts & SMS & Call logs & Bookmarks & Calendars to the SD Card or Gmail."
Now before you say Titanium Backup. Try to run Titanium Backup without root. You can't. Super Backup only needs and checks for root if you try backing up your apps.

That is the app that isn't backing up my incoming messages.
Since a few of you aren't having any issues with it, what settings are being used? As I said before, I had no issues on my evo 4g but doesn't want to save those texts from her with the LG.
I have no reason or desire to restore these texts back onto my phone. I just want them backed up to my gmail like sms backup + does, just in case I need them to cover myself.

Never thought of using google voice that way. I guess it might be time to integrate voice with my sprint number soon then. Does it put the sms into gmail in a similar way that sms backup plus does?
I find it funny as I just went through some of those backup, and it did backup some incoming texts when I first got the phone. It just hasn't been working right since right before x-mas. I have now installed an older version of the app to see if that might work. If not I will look more into google voice. I already have gvoice but never really used it.
You will go to google.com/voice and login and there will be a text message label with all of them, it does work very well for that
