Ok so here's my story. I bricked about a week and a half ago and I reeeally dont want to do it again. I got sloppy. I have done a LOT more reading with the aokp roms and such and think I have a pretty good understanding on how to avoid another brick. So my question is... Im on venum's hydra rom right now and I want to flash the el26.cmw kernel via mobile odin just to make a back up. I just want to know if its safe to do?? Can I flash the kernel via mobile odin, get into recovery as soon as it starts too boot up, make the back up, then flash back to an aosp kernel and be ok?? and If I want to go back to Gingerbread Do I just make the back up, flash the el29 one click odin restore, and Im good? Then to go back to my back up I made of the hydra rom, I would flash the el26.cmw, flash the hydra rom, gapps, and then flash the el26.cmw again and make my restore? Its a multiple question I know... I just want to know if im gonna brick another phone. I really like this one Its the white version!!
My suggestion.. More reading on your part. Anything that has Sfhub's name on it will set ya strait.
spoon feeding is not one of my strong points... Sorry.

1.Yes safe to do

4. flash el26 cwm kernel, calks format all, restore backup, wipe cache/dalvik, flash compatible kernel and reboot

Coming off a recent ICS related Brick myself (it cost me $100 to get a new phone due to insurance).
If I might offer you the advice that I had to learn the hard way... don't get impatient. If your phone looks like it's not doing anything, but hasn't told you that it's all clear DO NOT TOUCH IT. Wait for a reboot, or for your computer to tell you it's safe to pull the plug or reboot.
The reason why u bricked the first time is due to kernel incompatibility. U need gb kernel for gb and ics kernel for ics. Otherwise it won't boot up.

Nah. And the Sprint Customer Care guy somehow found a tiny droplet of water damage in my phone forcing me to file a claim instead of getting it fixed for free. He tried to point it out to me, but I couldn't see it, nor could the store manager.

Yikes! OK, it all depends on what you are trying to flash. Rogue works great for Gingerbread builds. The Epic Touch has recovery built into the kernel, so you can't really just mix and match. You have to have the kernel with the recovery in it. Read up about which rom you are trying to install before doing anything. The AOSP stuff requires you use the el26 "Stock" CWM. Stock refers to it is an unmodified ClocckworkMod, unlike Rogue. There is also a thread about how to not brick your e4gt, I highly recommend you read that as well. Of course, I've learned that doing anything with anyones phone other than your own will often end in disaster as well lol "Dude, why doesn't blah blah blah work?" Usually a quick fix for those in the know, but if the person can't do it themselves, they just get frustrated and mad at the @$$hole that messed up their phone lol Good luck

Absolutely! Rooted my wife's evo and put CM7 on it a while ago, learned that lesson very quickly! No matter how much you try to warn them that some things might be a bit weird or might not work, they always be shocked if anything isn't exactly the way they had it before. She has an iphone now ... and I refuse to learn how to jailbreak it

I'm new to the rooting game as well for the EG4T. The Rogue part sounds right, it most likely had more to do with the version you used. I made the same mistake once.
My best tip would be to use QBKing77's tutorial videos and follow them step-by-step....he has one for pretty much any situation and explains things very well. They are a lifesaver. Also, since it's your friend's phone, maybe stick to GB ROMs as they seem to require the fewest tweaks and have the least FCs. If you absolutely have to have ICS, my choice on ROM would be Venum's Anaconda ROM, which was just released yesterday. It is nothing short of brilliant. However, once you go to ICS, I believe you need to start from scratch (stock) if you want to go back to GB. I hear it's a big no-no to try and recover GB from an ICS ROM (most likely what you did). Best of luck.

I learned the same thing when the Optimus S had a firmware update - it was later pulled but the damage was done. So I did what I could - found a stable tweaked ROM and put it on there. I've always believed in wiping the phone before flashing - BIG MISTAKE. "Where's my messages? Where's my files?"
Funny thing about this is that they fixed the last FW update with another one that rolls out today. I know I'm going to have to flash this one but I'll be using TB to back up what I can before I flash it. Also have to figure out how to save her SMS, that's the #1 thing that will avoid a mad wife!

There aren't any kernels that overclock for ICS yet. I am not sure on this but the paid Tegrak Ultimate app allows overclocking of stock kernels we have but I haven't tried it on CM9 yet.
Once we get the ICS kernel source, things will be a lot easier when it comes to flashing. I understand where you are coming from with the Nexus though. I basically wipe everything on my NS4G then flash the Euroskank CM9 nightly and all of my apps install automatically. We don't have it that easy on the Epic Touch but once we have a kernel built from source we will be able to wipe and flash without fear of any residual issues

That's one of the things I like about the cm9 builds lately. I did a fresh install of fd02 just to check it out and when I came back to cm9 it pulls in my setup I had before, right down to changing my wallpaper for me. No backups needed. I still have to go in and put in my username and passwords on some of them and I lose my Cut the Rope game data (Oh darn!!), but I love that my apps from the play store(calling the market the "play store" makes me feel dirty lol) automatically install.

OK, first things first. I will suggest you read a lot more before doing anything based on what I bolded above.
ROM Manager is generally discouraged and can cause a brick. Read more here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24318861&postcount=2
Hopefully you got to this in time.
Good luck and once again, please do not be afraid to ask questions before you do something. It's easier than taking your friend's phone to Sprint because it bricked.
Final Edit: Sorry if I'm coming off a little harsh, but there are MANY posts out there - far longer than the ICS brick issues - that have said ROM Manager is a no-no.

Like I said earlier, the recoveries are built into the kernel. Get the files you want to flash onto the sd card, then odin the el26 kernel. Before it reboots (ICS won't boot on a gb kernel, so you'll just boot loop anyway), go back into recovery and flash away.
Just whatever you do....dont flash with any Rogue ICS recovery, the source isnt avalable yet so its kinda like playing darts with a blindfold on and your friends are all drunk and not paying attention to whats going on around them.
Personally, I keep Rogue Stock EL29 (Odin version) on my sdcard and just use mobile odin to revert back to that when I need to flash (someone please let me know if this method is a bad one, so far it has worked fine though).
I haven't read up much on it, but I would avoid doing backups and restores of ICS roms via recovery until ICS is finalized (regardless of the recovery your using).
If you wanna play it safe, just stick with an EL29 rom until a final version of ICS is released, frankly I prefer stability over fancy new features and just like to test out the ICS leak for a little before odin'ing back to Rogue EL29 and restoring my gingerbread backup...it quite cool to watch the offical ICS mature and get fixed.

Did you mean Calk's 1.4?
You shouldn't be using touch recovery with anything for risk of bricking your phone.
And if you're using ANY version of ICS, you also risk bricking your phone if you try to use any form of recovery.

I agree with the first part, stay away from CWM9 touch. Youre asking to get bricked. CWM5-7 recover rogue is fine to use between ICS roms. Always run Calkins format all. And never use cwm.recovery to do a nand back to GB. Flash SFHUBS stock EL29 first via Odin..along with calk's format all prior to.that then nandroid back to your previous set up.

Build a solid ics kernel for us then. Or wait until we get the official release. There is no fix because nothing is broken. All ics roms for this phone are built on leaked kernels.
But I'm sure your post was just sarcasm and you knew that since it's been spoken about in just about every ics rom thread.

Ok so this is going to be newbie-like question but i just need it to find of a definite answer. What is the safest way to flash from ICS to Gingerbread using Mobile odin pro. I bricked my phone yesterday and thank all that tried to help. Luckily the good folks at sprint charged my only 35 dollars to replace without insurance. Don't want to make that mistake again. For the new people that don't know, or find it hard to find info... My brick was done when I flashed AOKP ICS Rom and it started with a barrage of force closes, I rebooted and got stuck on the pink unicorn boot animation. I then went to recovery to try to wipe to stop force closes... Needless to say, R.I.P. First E4GT. I have flashed a million times. Just need a real answer as to how to go from ICS to GB with Mobile odin. I use the EL29 quick boot kernel and do have the EL26 Kernel as well. I would say the easiest method for going back to GB would be to use one of sfhub's one-click restores from your PC. I'd recommend the EL29 option .
If you prefer to do it with Mobile Odin download the above file and follow these instructions:
1) Install ZArchiver.
2) Open ZArchiver and navigate to where the downloaded .exe file was saved.
3) Long press SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe.
4) Open as archive.
5) Select SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe.
6) Select Extract.
8) Select where to save the file to (don't change the name).
8) Open Mobile Odin.
9) Open the SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe.
10) Flash Firmware.
That should take care of you.
Good luck!
What I've always done is just mobile odin the el26 cwm kernel whenever I need to switch roms. Doesnt matter if its ICS or GB since you'll be flashing from a safe recovery.

When in doubt, Mobile Odin el26 before flashing. If you get the urge to try something different, put your phone down and walk away. Lol

Question 2. Can i use the EL26 Kernel (Or the EL29 with CWM Baked Kernel) to make an ICS Nandroid?
Thank you guys again... Not trying to hard brick twice in 24 hrs and i don't think sprint will be so nice next time lol.

To answer your first question, yes.
I'm pretty sure its yes to question 2 as well buy I'm actually not big on nandroid since i have all my apps backed up. Normally if something goes wrong, I just flash a different ROM and start fresh. Lol
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I hear you on the Nandroid. I have all my prized apps backed up with apps backup and restore... I love the app. I just hate organizing all apps and folders (a lil o.c.d. with that) as well as setting up like 8 different email accounts... It gets to be a pain. Thank you for answering my question, very appreciated. By the way, to anyone reading... I saw a new rom on here that states AGAT recovery can flash ICS to ICS. I was doing that yesterday with no problem (using AGAT Recovery) but i would like to know if it is safe... I am going to stick to the EL26 or EL29 Kernel method. One Hard brick is enough for a lifetime, let alone 24hrs
Wanted to try another ICS Rom. Jumping from phone to phone. I guess I missed something. Lol. I got a little carried away.
So I was running the Calkulin's ICS with EL29 + CWM Rogue...
Reading the AOKP first page... said go to EL26.
So I proceeded to EL26 using this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Tired to boot into recovery and start up the phone but it just sits on the SII screen. Did I do something?
So now I am back to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Got it back up and running and restored my last back up. Wah wah.
Was the EL26 a ODIN process or something I was to flash in recovery? Was I to flash the whole phone to EL26 and not just the boot? Would it be safe to just flash AOKP from EL29+Rogue?
OP said go back to el26 cwm recovery because that is a know safe GB recovery safe to wipe and flash in. So odin the el26 cwm recovery in Odin and then flash AOKP ad Gapps from there.

I would hold off on playing the ICS shuffle game until the community and samsung has a good grasp on the bricking situation.

I've owned every smart phone on Sprint and owned multiple devices on T-Mobile.
I don't know it all, but I'm here to learn. I need to figure it out. Lol.
It bricked and I recovered. Just looking for direction on where to locate a file at this point since I couldn't find it.
I've been through this situation a couple times on other devices. Got a little ahead of myself again and just digging for answers.
TEP wouldn't cover any of this since it's all caused by the end user.
Thanks for the other above posts. I shall stick around on one rom and it's revisions until something happens.

U can flash to things safely, just have the right software. Keep el26 cmw kernel tar thats found on rwilco12's kernel repository on ur phone for mobile Odin and on ur PC for regular Odin and you'll be OK. Of course things will change as source rolls out but that's been the tried and true method til meow. Meow what I'm saying?

The community has a very good grasp on the bricking situation. Experienced devs like chris41g and dees_troy have made safe recoveries to wipe and flash in. You must have been gone for awhile lol.
I have been riding the stable ROM train for a little too long
alrighty then. I have been playing with my phone for about 2 hours now trying to figure out how to get rid of CM10 so I can flash a new ROM. (had to find dev options etc.) I tried flashing a recovery image through the SGS tool kit, still had CM10. I tried re-rooting (not advised, had a small stroke while figuring out if I bricked or soft bricked) I just did a system wipe, also ill advised, it warned me that I had no OS (thats why we make nandroids like good lil boys and girls.)
For the love of Jeebus someone please tell me how to get CM10 off of my phone so I can flash a new ROM. can I un-root and re-root and start from scratch that way? is that proper? is there an easier way? Why am I asking all these questions?! (because no matter what, I will always be a NooB -.-')
I appreciate any insight you guys can give me, thanks in advance!

Fairly simple just download another non cm10 ROM as you did to install cm10 in the first place. If you are unsure of what to do read the instructions in the OP of the ROM you want.

I appreciate the reply, im hesitant to flash over cm10 though. I seem to remember always having to reflash back to stock (root) before flashinga new ROM, I never encountered any problems when doing so.

Just wipe data, cache and dalvik then flash new rom. No reason whatsoever to flash another stock rom to flash the one you want
I like to break stuff!

Idk who told you you needed to go back to stocm b4 flashing another rom but they were wrong. I've been flashing roms for a few years on 7 different phones and 5 tablets and never once went back to stock before changing roms

its a habit from the Vibrant. flashing back to stock prevented the possibility of "ghost files." it just kind of ensured everything rolled along smoothly. The reality is that flashing over CM10 is looking like my only option without having to break out good Ol' Command Prompt lol. I appreciate your help guys.!

Just wipe in recovery to get rid of the last roms data and files. You could always odin to stock if you really wanted to but its just extra steps that aren't needed

Don't forget to nandriod before flashing. It will help you when you need it most.
What recovery were you using? I have used twrp with no problems
