Just wondering the main purpose of this service. I use google voice, etc...was talk just an early predicessor??? what does everyone use it for?
Talk is a messenger back in the good old G1 days that is how us android users would communicate with each other. I do believe it was suppose to be what Google voice is now and much more. Seeing how the old Google voice versions we could sign in with just gtalk instead of verifying a phone number. I still use that version due do not actually having a carrier number.

Simple answer. Its the same as aim, yahoo messenger or MSN messenger. Its a chat program with other people that have gmail.
Google voice is a central number for all of your phones.

yeah it is a messenger but I just don't ever find myself using it. just like google plus, it's an eehh. things my gmail logs me into that got annoying after some time. The video chatting was horrible when I first used it, gave it a second shot and just bad...
Its the only messenger app I use and that is guarenteed to be on everyone's android phone. I use it everyday and prefer it over texting 99% of time

Is there really no way to use gmail chat on WP7?
I've tried going straight to the website but that's inconvenient and that messenger by miyowaka is not good unless I have friends on windows live.
Anyway to do this? Any app in the works?
Would be grateful with any info as my workplace just banned gchat.
Even I am looking for a chat software to make my WP7 running to my use. In the mobile OS war, the key thing now is about Social network integration. Facebook is integrated well. However Twitter, gtalk, facebook chat all are missing. Moreover even facebook and twitter notifications are not there. Do we ever get a chat feature in WP7 ? There are lot of Questions on mind than the UI as its the only thing which attracts me.
So, any update on this anyone?
There are 2 Gtalk apps for WP7:
- Flory Messenger (free)
- Jabber Talk (not free)
I prefer Flory because is free and has support for Facebook chat too.
talk google
Flory turned me off right away due to a sign up process. It seemed required almost though due to the way they do XMPP.
I used JabberTalk once or twice but it's very simplistic and after logging in I got a "You might be haxed here's the IP!" alert from Google that may or may not be related. It may be that they have to use a XMPP gateway of sorts so you're not without this middleman which would explain the behavior I saw. It's also possible that this was entirely coincidental and just happened to happen in the exact week I used it.
The likely course of action is if no one will, I'll go for a clone of the unofficial official MSN app (Messenger by Miyowa). The way this handles MSN is almost flawless from a chat app goes but I may give Flory a try if it's closer to a 1:1.
I'm looking into buying a Google Voice App. Did a few searches, but the reviews are mostly outdated and some of the cons are undoubtedly fixed.
Wondering if anyone recently done the same search and what conclusion you came to?

If you mean the program that records calls, I had an issue one time on my HD7. I used the app on an Android and it recorded a call and kept showing the icon on the lockscreen of my HD7 when I started using it. What it did was mix up the voice message origin between the Google app and the built-in app. I could never get the icon to go away until I made a new voice message to my HD7 using the built-in app. Then I was able to delete the message and make the icon disappear.
I stopped using Google Voice because of that.
I've been using GoVoice, and its worked pretty good so far. Its a far cry from the official Google Voice app I had on android, so I'm hoping socket support comes soon, and hoping Google will make an official app like they did with the iPhone.
I come from using a Nexus One so the switch has been painful to say the least. I do like GoVoice somewhat. Hate the fact that you have to sign up for a third party service to get push notifications. Otherwise it's an ok app.
My pick is FreeTalk. I was using GoVoice before, but I found that FreeTalk offers a more user friendly interface. I like the fact that when I start up FreeTalk, you can immediately choose to either look at your messages or immediately swipe to the phone keypad hub screen to make a call. This is especially useful to me, as I make a lot of international calls through Google Voice. Lastly, for those who might need this feature, there is a non-English translation option that will translate your SMS and text voicemails to another language. I am not sure if this is built-in into the Android version, and I don't think I saw it in GoVoice either.
Every rom I use this happens and I would liek to know if there is a fix.
I get notified with a text even tho I have the setting unchecked in the GV app.
I get a freakin Gmail with every VM. So I essentially get 3 notifications whenever I get a VM. Is there a way to stop this, it is annoying as heck.
Also, I don't like seeing 2 services running all the time for it. Gv used to give me one heck of a wakelock... do you guys generally leave inbox sync on?

Thanks, I do see those options there.
I swear that app always running is impacting my battery tho.. could be a mind thing since I had such horrible wakelocks with it in the past.
It can be a battery hog. Although I have it installed, I am logged out of the app itself. I can still receive & reply to GV text messages via my default messaging app. Anyway, I'm glad I was able to help. Take care.
All,
No credit here- I just wanted to let all of those looking for Visual Voice Mail for CM10 or other AOSP roms I have tested this on L710 SGS3 for Sprint and it does work. I tried it on CM10 nightly 8/20.
http://epicaokp.blogspot.com/2012/05/aokpcm9-fixed-sprint-visual-voicemail.html
I didnt find a thread on this so sorry if its already out there. just dwnload the Zip and flash in CWM. Some say it doesnt work in other recoveries such as TWRP. I used CWM.
you can hit thanks if you want but I did not make this... I just braved it and reported it. VVM is very important to me. Only reason to keep sprint.
enjoy
Wow, this is one of the main reasons why I stayed away from CM rom in the past. I can't live without VVM... can't stand wasting 20mins sifting thru audio voicemails with a pen and paper.
Will it update to the new version or are we stuck with the version that gets flashed? VVM just had an update in the past few weeks, i think i'm on the latest which is 5.3.0.32.
I had visual voice mail with cm10 by just making a titanium backup of it from a rom that had it, then restoring when I ran cm10.

You never had to. Google voice provides a better voicemail if you ask me. And to the folks that dont like the deep integration, you can break the tie-in and just use it for the voicemail.
But yeah... VVM is good too. I just have fewer issues with google voice.
I need the "call record" app.
There's an app section for that

I can't find a thread that details that and the Google instructions are a joke. Care to fill us in on how you did that?
No offense but, Google voice is crap IMO. Or at least it was crap a year ago. That's what I tried to use when I was on cm7 on the epic. I hated it. Vvm is well worth the 2$ a month to me. I run a business with this phone, it's gotta be reliable. Like I said it's been a year since I last tried it, but the impression it left was a disaster to my business for an entire week.

You should give Google Voice another try. Make sure you set it up from a PC.
I also run a busniess from my phone and the option for different contacts to hear a different voicemail greeting is worth the price of admission on its own.
I have my main voicemail greeting set up as my business name and then I have a different voicemail greetings for my personal contacts.
I can login to any PC and retrieve my voice mail, no phone needed. I'm not sure if Sprint VVM does that or not.
I honestly would not be able to run my business without Google Voice.

Wow guys... Ok heres the skinny. I did a TB but the backup was not there after CM10. IDK y im working on it.
#2 I tried installing .apk- didnt work, kept saying your acct cannot be verified. Thats because the supporting files are not in place in AOSP- this is the way it has been since AOSP, so idk what he's talking about.
# 3 yes it did update.
#4 Google voice is horrible- I have tried it multiple times I always get beeps in the middle of my calls and the transcriptions are terrible, best part of google voice is missed call notifications even when you didnt get the call.
Now This is a Sprint VVM thread please keep it that way and if you want to run your mouth about something else then go somewhere else. Also dont need info about other apps or whatever-
Contribute or just keep moving...
I wanted to thank ya'll for posting this. Great stuff.
Just some observations...
This is the second-to-latest Sprint Visual Voicemail application. It works well, is stable, and I love it on Paranoid Android 1.9.9
Just a note - if you're worried that upgrading to this will delete your current store of voice mail files, it will not. If all you're doing is *flashing* this on an already-rooted ROM using CMW 5.0+, you're going to be okay. I played around with it earlier today. No problems whatsoever, all stable, no SNAFUS. I don't know why some people have reported issues.
Hoppingfully yours,
--SLN
Does this give the weird text every time you get a voicemail like all the other CM's?
Cm flashers are always pushing Google voice, but I find it to be extremely inconvenient and complicated and the voice to text translations are horrible. VVM is the only way to fly in my opinion. I'm getting the 9016 text thing on freegs3 now, but it doesn't bother me. It's just another notification. I just delete the thread after a while. I've been flashing so much lately that the text notification actually caught a few messages while I was flashing.

This should be in themes and apps not development. Especially since you didn't make it. Plus there is already a thread on themes apps with I believe the same vvm.
I know you're trying to contribute but please post in the right place.
-Sprint Galaxy Slll_Transformer Prime-
Yes i do still get the annoying texts.
Then maybe someone needs to work on the search function. I searched before posting so w/e dude. I pit it in development because you have to flash in recovery. This isn't just an apk

I think the important question is why is this in the development thread? Please read the rules so you understand where to post. It makes the forums much easier to navigate if everyone posts in the correct forum.

stop annoying text messages.
the Text messages can be stopped by recording a voicemail message and sending it to the following address: [email protected]

Incorrect. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE PLEASE USE THE SEARCH feature built into the xda forums. These text messages have been around since CM6, its how AOSP works. The only way to remove them is use chompsms, gosms, or something similar to block the 9016 text messages.
There is an APK in the Apps and Themes section here, install that, reboot to recovery, fix permissions, reboot phone, open vvm app, send 25 second message to [email protected] and it will provision and work. I have never had a single problem getting VVM to work since CM6 following these steps.
I think it's a horrible app you can't see who is online or busy or whatever. This is not a chat service anymore. There is no contact list basically listing all the people from your G+ and contacts. It's horrible!. In every level. I have to scroll through 800 contacts or search just to send a message and it doesn't even let me know if that person is online, so I have no idea how they are getting my messages
I have to agree. This is pretty terrible. They even removed the calling option so its just video now, as if video-only makes sense on a PHONE.
Hopefully Talk isn't dead by the end of the year.

Thankfully when you uninstall google hangouts you get google talk back
I'm going to agree as well. I dont like that I cant see who's online. And almost all of my contacts dont have this service so, in my opinion, they shouldnt show up at all.
If you guys have any link to updated apk please post it

I just sent a message to a yahoo account, thinking I was going to get an email or something, NOP! Nothing, so you have to be totally sure that message you're sending it's to someone who has a gmail account

I did that as soon as it asked me to confirm my phone number. I really just want the built-in IM that came with my account, not a Whatsapp clone to replace it. I already have Whatsapp.
Hopefully Talk never dies. Hangouts is social media disguised as instant messaging.
So after watching a video on it, I realized it does show who is online by displaying their profile pic at the bottom when they join the hangout. But still, it shouldnt display ALL my contacts in the contact list. Just the ones who have the ability to use it.
Idk maybe it's just me, but I like the new hangout. You can send screenshots again and everything. Granted, it takes some getting used to, but after playing with it a bit, its growing on me

exactly!
I just wish it was a proper unified messaging app - i.e. could send carrier SMS to non-Hangout contacts. Incidentally, anyone know what happens to the message if you do try and send to someone who doesn't have it? Must get routed somewhere?

I would think this only works with Gmail/Google+ users. Which, again, is why not all contacts should not be displayed. I'm going to try and search for some info on this.

Why would you think this would happen? Google doesn't want you using carrier SMS anyway. They will shift us to internet-based messaging completely someday. That's why you didn't get SMS integration.
I'm guessing it gets sent to their Google Talk.

So if you go and try to start a hangout it will show you a list of people to start the hangout with, people not available(offline) has their picture grayed out and the available(online) are shown as usual. As far as the video calling-I think if the person on the other end doesn't have video calling available(due to no front facing camera on their phone or no camera on the desktop/laptop) only voice calling will be the option available....have to test it though... I think it's fresh and after awhile it will get better...I don't hate it.
Sadly a lot not to like so far. I was wondering why there were duplicate users in my contact list, if they are showing non-gmail email accounts separately I guess that explains it. Unfortunately, it doesn't show what account users in the list are coming from so you don't know which one you can use, if any.
Hopefully they will fix the contact mess and re-add status information (online/busy/offline, mobile/desktop). I like the new emoji, but hardly seems worth the great leap backwards in functionality.
On the plus side, you can finally copy text from your message history, so that's one longstanding, inexplicable failure corrected

This is what is really annoying. It feels like a dumbed-down product even though its been in the making for what seems like forever. It even requires you to join G+ to get the most out of it. Plus, its not even really that unified, as people still have G+ messenger since this only replaces Talk.
Heck, the app rating in the Play store has plummeted to 3.9 as I type this. What a joke.
completely useless.
I can't believe it took them two years to make this.
google talk was MUCH better, and compared to let's say, whatsapp, google talk was completely useless. that's how bad this thing is.
