[Q] Stupid n00b question.....

Hi All,
Sorry to bother you guys but I'm a very new and wet behind the ears HD user. Initially i had an Orange UK branded HD but wanted to get rid of the Orange rubbish so ended up downgrading and installing Leedroid_HD_V2.2.3 which Ive been running for a month or so, i love the ROM and have it exactly as i want it.
Now my question is this;
Ive recently seen that theres an updated Leedroid ROM out (V3.0.0 GB) and id like to upgrade to it, is there any way of 'ghosting' my current setup (apps/widgets/settings) so that i don't have to go through the hassle of installing and configuring to get it back to how id like it ?

You could use Titanium Backup, but not recommend as your restoring between different builds. Also my backup root has capability to restore system settings, sms, apps, data etc.
I was in the same situation today, just downloaded all the apps fresh, and setup how I like. I only restored data to a couple games, not to any system app.
Ok, took a little while, but will save a lot of hurt later on with force closes etc.
After setup, just make a fresh titanium & nan-backup cwm for GB.

EDIT: IF you enable the security backup of your google account,your app list is going to auto-restore when you initialize your new rom the fist time...
the user data,etc.. not recomened restore it if you go from froyo to gingerbread like upintheair said.

Few Newbie Questions

Hi guys,
OK, so I'm not really a newbie as I loaded Android onto my HD2, both SD and NAND versions (RIP HD2 ).
But, it has been a while and I have a couple of questions I've been trying to find answers to:
I got my nexus though vodafone UK, if this makes a difference.
Can I root this phone without wiping the device? I'm currently quite happy with the stock rom , but I'd like to push some custom boot animations, etc.
I've been looking into backing up apps that I've downloaded as I don't currently have wifi access - I do get unlimited data for a few months, but it'll take ages to download it all again!
Titanium Backup was my first port of call, but says it requires root...
And lastly, if I were to use Titanium to back up, say, a game, would my progress in that game be saved?

Rooting your phone doesnt wipe your device, however in order to root your phone you will need to unlock the bootloader which is a very simple process but this process DOES wipe your device. It only needs to be performed once though but without doing it you wont be able to do anything else.
Use the Sticky Thread to find out how to install fastboot drivers which you will need to unlock the bootloader. Then you can use pauls r3 Superboot to root the phone.

Any app that will backup your apps/settings will require root. You can also flash ClockworkMod and make a NAND backup of your device, then restore the DATA partition on a new Rom to restore your apps.
And lastly, if I were to use Titanium to back up, say, a game, would my progress in that game be saved?

Im pretty sure it saves app data so that would include saved games or settings.

Custom roms.

I know about the roms but more specifically what about the apps that require root access?

The root apps I use often are adbWireless and Titanium Backup.
But why would you root if you didn't even have a need to do so? Sounds like you're running stock anyway...

Titanium backup is the first app I use that requires root access. It lets you backup all of your apps and their saved data so you can restore them later. I think it is a must have app for any Android user.
Another one I use is SSH Tunnel to get around the corporate firewall when I connect to the wifi at work.
You can also get root file browsers so you can manipulate the system files on your phone.
You can find a lot of apps just by searching for root in the android market.

+1 on Titanium Backup. Here are a few I am using that require root:
LBE Privacy Guard
SetCPU
Nova Launcher (requires root to display widgets in the widget drawer)
ROM Manager
Root Explorer
Also running Android Revolution ROM, which is pretty much stock ICS with a bunch of speed/memory tweaks.

Nand -- the very first thing you should do is a complete nand backup so you have a bit by bit backup of your phone in case you need to restore it. This is beyond Titanium and if you are going to get into ROMs and kernels you will want to make a practice out of this.

I would say research. Typing something along the lines of "top root apps" into Google will bring up a myriad of results. Being able to research and read on your own will go a long way to helping you get out of a situation if you mess up your phone some how.

1) Clockwork Mod Recovery
Most important! Allows you to make a copy of your entire system as is. You make a mistake, you can return your system back to it's original working order. Don't leave home without it!
2) Titanium Back Up
Allows you to back up apps and/or corresponding data. This allows you to restore specific apps without restoring your entire system.
These two apps are commonly known as the two must have apps for root users. They will be your safety net. I would also recommend that you get the paid version on both. You won't want a limited safety net, if you get yourself into a "situation"

PS A nandroid is backup of your phones entire current system. Clockwork Mod Recovery does that.

Another +1 for Titanium Backup. I've used it on every phone since the Nexus One and love it. It can even help you migrate apps to new phones, as long as you setup the configuration correctly. Make sure not to save system apps to restore on a different phone (did this when I got my Galaxy S II and it would boot-loop or restart every few minutes...then I remembered I had some system apps in my backup haha).
WiFi Tether: Best tethering app on the planet. Setup is easy (in settings just pick the Galaxy Nexus CDMA/GSM, then assign a name and password to your "router"), use is even easier. Open the app and tap the *only button on the app*. It turns your phone into a wireless hotspot. I used it all last night before my internet was installed (new place), and it worked perfectly. Got 15-25Mbps speeds and it's completely reliable. Played some MMOs using it =P
Rom Manager: Especially helpful once you start using custom roms and such, but also helpful for doing a NAND backup. This will backup your *entire* phone. When you want to restore it'll be as if you were in the exact same place as when you made the backup. Fantastic ability.
Root Manager: Helpful for if you need to browse system files or edit them. Nice for blocking ads, deleting system stuff, etc...

I know on previous phones I could just install RM, and then flash CWM that way. Is that also okay with the GN? I've read topics on how to install CWM but installing via RM just seems a lot easier and quicker.

[Q] Cant restore data using MyBackup !! Help!

Hi all,
Last year I backed up all data on my HTC DHD using a 'trial version' of MyBackup.
I then installed XDA ROMS and successfully restored the data using MyBackup.
Recently installed some of the latest XDA ROMS.
I tried to restore my backups using MyBackup Pro - But the application tells me "License has expired".
I was under the impression that by 'unlocking' (?) the phone using AAHK (Advanced Ace Hack Kit) and installing XDA ROMS that one could basically use most 3rd party software apps without the requirement to purchase software licenses?
Am I way off? Do I need to purchase a license for MyBackup?
Is there any other way to restore the data?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! ( Currently cannot phone anyone without phone numbers restored! :-( )

Unlocking the phone has nothing to do with not paying for commercial apps, and this certainly isn't the place for that sort of discussion.
There's a free version of MyBackup available for root users with all the features of the full version except for online backups (in the Market named "MyBackup Root" ) - that's what I use and it works just fine. Otherwise, support the devs and pay the pennies for the app.

You can try nand backups in recovery mode (or rom manager which is basically the same thing)

Could please possibly provide some clarrity for me then so I'm in the clear:
1. Unlocking the phone and installing ROMS originally built for other phones is OK/leagal (because of open source?) ?
2. These ROMS should/will then never come with pre-installed 'commercial' apps (as some of the jail broken Iphone's do?), only free apps?
3. Could you possibly provide a link to information on 'wiping' a phone first before installing new ROMS. I am not able to use any new ROMS with out always receiving 'Force Close' messages or the phone constantly rebooting. I saw in the Q & A that one should always wipe first, i'm just not sure what the best procedure is to do this, i.e how to backup first, and how to wipe.

1. Correct, although as every manufacturer/operator will tell you it will invalidate your warranty. Hence the many threads on how to go back to the stock ROM when making a claim.
2. Again, correct. With the possible exception of commercial apps which were already included as stock (e.g the DHD came with QuickOffice included in the stock ROM, so ROMs built on this base will likely include that).
3. You can manually do it in recovery (wipe data, wipe system, wipe cache, etc) but I prefer the 'Super Wipe' script you can find in the first post of the "Android Revolution HD" thread in the development section. Just flash it in recovery and it will wipe & format all your partitions. That's all I ever use and I've never had any issues.
So first backup your apps, texts and whatever with MyBackup Root. Reboot into recovery and make a full backup (so you can restore back to your current state if something goes wrong). Flash the super wipe script; the phone will reboot to recovery when DONE. Flash the new ROM. Install MyBackup Root and restore the bits you need (but don't restore system data between ROMs, and be wary that restoring data for some apps between ROMs can sometimes cause force close issues). And that's it. Repeat as and when you see a new ROM that you fancy.

And thanks for the explanation and detailed steps to wipe and install! Just installed ICS 9.9.3 without any FC messages or auto reboot problems!!
Sorry, just one more thing, not sure if I need to contact MyBackup directly. I have successfully restored all contacts. I'm now tying to restore all photos. To do this one has to select 'Apps & Media' option. All goes fine (reading contents, extracting zip file) until it then provides the option to tick 'all apps' or 'all photos' or both. When ticking photos only, the following message appears: "Unable to restore 'apps' as the original backup was done when MyBackup did NOT have root access." The app then closes.
Any ideas?

You can try the free version of MyBackup (not Root) to restore your apps.
P.S. I prefer Titanium Backup for backing up my apps+data

Can't help you with that, sorry. I've seen that error once before when restoring apps from a backup taken prior to rooting (I think because the original backup was taken without sufficient access rights to backup what it needed), but that shouldn't happen for photos; your photos are stored on the SD card anyway so the backup would just be copying them from one directory on the card to another which shouldn't require root access. Might be worth giving the MyBackup devs a shout.

Silly questions these but never used this or done it b4
.. can I back up my entire rom with all my apps so if I put a new rom on my phone and dont like it I could just revert back to my last rom how I left it??
Also how do you back up just apps properly
How easy is it to restore apps or even full rom if possible to do

You should google nandroid backups.. it basically restores your rom to the time you backed it much like a time machine (you go back to your previous condition). This requires a custom recovery which should be your first task after rooting your phone. Titanium backup only backs up apps and app data this is useful because when you flash a new rom you will lose all your data so TB restores all the apps for you and PRO makes restoration super quick..
Everyone's a noob at some point so doing a quick search on your favourite search engine to answer these sort of questions can take you a long way..

i don't know bout you, but i myself only made a stock rom backup (right after i root and put cwm using odin), after that i never back up any rom i flashed ( i dont know why but i love --or addicted-- to flash almost every new custom rom)... hence i only back up my apps using titanium. with the new update the UI is kinda different, to upload to dropbox (you get 50GB from samsung for 2 years), you have to klick the 3rd tab and press run.
if you choose to backup using sdcard, dont forget to set the destination in setting, i prefer to backup on my ext sd because i often use superwipe before i flash some rom.
after that pres the checkmark in a box on the right edge on the top, it will then diagnose what scenarios are possible for you.
then it'll show you some list just pick one you want and press the check mark again. and you're done.
