Can anyone give someone fairly new to android some tips on what to do next now that I have unlocked and rooted? Running 4.0.2 now btw

The root apps I use often are adbWireless and Titanium Backup.
But why would you root if you didn't even have a need to do so? Sounds like you're running stock anyway...
Titanium backup is the first app I use that requires root access. It lets you backup all of your apps and their saved data so you can restore them later. I think it is a must have app for any Android user.
Another one I use is SSH Tunnel to get around the corporate firewall when I connect to the wifi at work.
You can also get root file browsers so you can manipulate the system files on your phone.
You can find a lot of apps just by searching for root in the android market.
+1 on Titanium Backup. Here are a few I am using that require root:
LBE Privacy Guard
SetCPU
Nova Launcher (requires root to display widgets in the widget drawer)
ROM Manager
Root Explorer
Also running Android Revolution ROM, which is pretty much stock ICS with a bunch of speed/memory tweaks.
Nand -- the very first thing you should do is a complete nand backup so you have a bit by bit backup of your phone in case you need to restore it. This is beyond Titanium and if you are going to get into ROMs and kernels you will want to make a practice out of this.
I would say research. Typing something along the lines of "top root apps" into Google will bring up a myriad of results. Being able to research and read on your own will go a long way to helping you get out of a situation if you mess up your phone some how.
1) Clockwork Mod Recovery
Most important! Allows you to make a copy of your entire system as is. You make a mistake, you can return your system back to it's original working order. Don't leave home without it!
2) Titanium Back Up
Allows you to back up apps and/or corresponding data. This allows you to restore specific apps without restoring your entire system.
These two apps are commonly known as the two must have apps for root users. They will be your safety net. I would also recommend that you get the paid version on both. You won't want a limited safety net, if you get yourself into a "situation"

PS A nandroid is backup of your phones entire current system. Clockwork Mod Recovery does that.

Another +1 for Titanium Backup. I've used it on every phone since the Nexus One and love it. It can even help you migrate apps to new phones, as long as you setup the configuration correctly. Make sure not to save system apps to restore on a different phone (did this when I got my Galaxy S II and it would boot-loop or restart every few minutes...then I remembered I had some system apps in my backup haha).
WiFi Tether: Best tethering app on the planet. Setup is easy (in settings just pick the Galaxy Nexus CDMA/GSM, then assign a name and password to your "router"), use is even easier. Open the app and tap the *only button on the app*. It turns your phone into a wireless hotspot. I used it all last night before my internet was installed (new place), and it worked perfectly. Got 15-25Mbps speeds and it's completely reliable. Played some MMOs using it =P
Rom Manager: Especially helpful once you start using custom roms and such, but also helpful for doing a NAND backup. This will backup your *entire* phone. When you want to restore it'll be as if you were in the exact same place as when you made the backup. Fantastic ability.
Root Manager: Helpful for if you need to browse system files or edit them. Nice for blocking ads, deleting system stuff, etc...
I know on previous phones I could just install RM, and then flash CWM that way. Is that also okay with the GN? I've read topics on how to install CWM but installing via RM just seems a lot easier and quicker.

Since at first we will not have access to the Market directly I was thinking that the best way to load aps would be with Titanium Backup. I have an Android phone now (HD2) that keeps the aps I use updated. By using z4root v1.3 or something like it to "root" I could just use my backup from the phone to keep my Adam aps up to date as well as to load them in the first place.
Any thoughts/discussion on this method or other ideas on how best/easiest to do it?
I plan on using dropbox and save all my apks there so I can access them from my Adam and install on the fly

Dropbox is an excellant way of handling it.
I plan to use dropbox to get my Titanium Pro and then use the Titanium batch mode to load the aps so I don't have to do them one at a time. I will have to see if I run into over write problems. Want to start with an initial Titanium full BU anyway on the Adam.
I will probably use mostly the same aps on my phone and Adam. The phone stays updated automatically from the market and I do frequent back-ups using the Titanium batch mode for new and updated aps. If I then did an ap restore on Adam they would all be current and updated as well. This method should keep me current until the Honeycomb market opens.
AppBrain Market Sync
AppBrain Market Sync will not work in this case because the device needs access to the Market for AppBrain to work. Just FYI. AppBrain is really a Market filter and search engine not an app storage depot.
Update: Other tabs have AppBrain working fine so I am sure the Adam will have it working as well.

Check out rothnic's thread called Eden Plus for an update.zip package for rooted access and stock Google Apps added.
First and foremost before we do any playing around, even after root, we should make sure full NAND is working. Having a NAND backup that is fully functional is very important. On camera Rohan seems fine with us tinkering around, but when it comes time for his company to pay out warranty costs they will no doubt speak out against rooting.

when i had my g-tablet i was able to do that with titanium. as long as titanium is granted super user permissions it should restore all our apps fine. ideally this is what i'd like to do.
Isn't it possible to just pull the apps from your phone by using ADB?
I know I where able to do this a long time ago, but I forgot how to do it, and I can't seem to find any info on it anymore.
As that would be easier than trying to get titanium backup working.

I don't use dropbox through Titanium. I use both for different purposes. It would be to slow to use dropbox to transfere all of those files.
I use dropbox to transfer the occasional single file and do any printing chores.
I use Titanium to backup my programs. Then I use the Nike network* to move the mass files between devices.
* The Nike network or tennis shoe network is an old computer term for using physical media to transfer files between computers. You use your feet to move from one to the other. I first did this on my IBM 5110 in 1979. The 5110 was an early IBM portable computer that had 8" floppy drives and a whopping 64k of memory. Portable in those days meant any computer smaller than a room.

Ah, thats the rub! I was going to use this method too until someone reminded me of this.
Awaiting my Adam. I'm hoping My backupPro does the trick for me.
It won't get flash or other pre-installed programs (HTC Incredible) so I'm sure hoping someone is going to put up a thread for "must have" apk's like Flash so we can get to them easily.

Looks like Rothnic has an update.zip package with root access and Google Apps added.
All Adams are shipped with root privilege access. Just need market and SuperUser app installed, access given to TB, install Busybox from TB, and then it should be good to go.
If someone wants to help speed up this process join ##adamroot on freenode.net and help the devs. They are waiting for someone with an Adam to spend about an hour or less working through the kinks.
Or you can send me ur Adam and I'll help get things working

Once you've paid for and app you can always download it again for free from the market (as long as you use the same google account).
If you definitely want to back up the apk, than you use titanium backup or also ES File. Not sure whether you actually need root to do that though.

I come from an HTC Desire and I have some backups that I made with MyBackup Pro of some app's data. Relevant data like some games progresses, Libra's database, etc. MyBackupPro has an online backup and I backed the data online on the HTC Desire and tried to restore it in the Galaxy Nexus. The Galaxy Nexus recognizes the backup, shows the apps that are backed up, but when I press Restore it says that I should reboot the device and that the restore was OK almost instantaneously. Nothing is restored, no data is transferred to the phone..
Is there any other way to migrate this kind of data? Shouldn't MyBackup Pro be working on the Galaxy Nexus?

Maybe the app needs an update for ICS? Try to check their site to see if there's a reported problem, that's most likely the case.
Should have gone with Titanium Backup. I never had much luck with MyBackup anyway. Titanium is rock star on ICS.
The only problem Ive had so far has been restoring SMS with Pro.
Even with busy box installed its suuuper slow at the moment.
I sent them an email, I'll wait for an answer.. But I guess it is due to incompatibilities with ICS too..

Your signature says your Desire is rooted. Rooting the GN is easy. I go through 4 phones a year. I couldn't imagine doing that without Titanium.
Yes, the Desire is rooted, but I wasn't planning on rooting the GN so soon. I just got it 2 days ago and I want to see how this goes without any "hacks"..
I wouldn't have rooted the Desire in the first place if it wasn't for the lack of updates, etc... That's the main reason I bought the GN, having a more official support. Let's see, I'm almost sure that I'll root it in the future, but I don't want to do it right now.. I'll just wait for the Rerware answer to my email and see how it goes.

Rerware already answered, but no updates. Although I think I know what the problem is. I am only backup up app's Data, because they are already installed in the GN. But this is a "root only" feature and, for what I understood, non-rooted devices cannot restore this kind of backup, only APK backups. I asked this to the guys at Rerware to see if there is a workaround.
When I have news I'll post them here.

restoring your data/sms/backups is a "hack"

Did you manage to find a solution to this problem? My phone is rooted and it still doesnt restore anything. Just like you said it finds the backup but then when you select the arrow next to apps to tick which ones you want to restore nothing is shown..

This happened to me with my sensation before. Somehow the backup got corrupted to I deleted it and started from scratch. Sorry to hear this happened to you it seriously sucks losing akk that stuff. What I've been doing is using from manager to restore my data partition and I've never had any issues SO FAR.
Enable advanced options, click restore and restore backup and only select the data.

I managed to solve the problem......
First my story:
I decided to install new ROM on my phone....i backed up apps and data with My Backup Pro (i bought the app)
My phone is rooted of course.
So i installed the new ROM and then i installed the My Backup Pro and started to restoring apps but i didn't get the app/data/app+data popup
and of course i couldn't restore my data from apps. i got really frustrated and browsed the web and couldn't find anything.
I started everything from the begining uninstalled all apps and figured it out that i did something wrong....and that is this that My Backup Pro doesn't work as it should without busy box...u have to install Busy Box before installing the My Backup Pro!
Follow this tutorial in order to restore your apps + data
Backing up apps on android (rooted) after installing new ROM
With My backup pro application
1. Backup apps + data
2. Backup dictionary
3. Backup all other data you want to
Install new ROM and then start restoring by this order
1. first install busy boxes i found there are two (BusyBox and BusyBox installer on the google store. install both)
2. install My backup pro and when asked to install additional options for rooted phone choose yes (now you should be able to choose between app/data/app+data to restore)
3. restore apps + data
4. thats it...enjoy!

I have been rooting for a long time since I had a G1. I never understood clearly how to transfer apps without the need to manually install them. Does creating a partition in the SD card to ext3 or ext4 have some factor to it? I would simply follow directions but didn't understand the process. Lately, I have been trying to find a good rom to use after many crashes of Andromadus V13. I am using the latest Anrdomadus Mimicry now and its great. Though, I realized that I didn't transfer any of my apps. As I was rooting a few ROMS previous to it, some would install a majority of the apps and others would require me to install them myself. Im curious of why this is so.
the auto restore is a function of the market, I don't like this method and choose no when I sign in (don't like wasting time and slowing things down cause of all the data over network or wifi
titanium back is my personal favorite way to restore apps on a new rom, there are other apps that will do this (romtollbox etc) tb will do texts but I have had issues with it

Apps are tied to your Google Play account and normally get automatically re-installed after you start your phone back up after a new ROM. Except, sometimes installing your ROM gives your phone a new "name" and Google Play doesn't know that it's the same phone (even though it's on the same account). So, if you go to Google Play on your computer, you would have more than one choice of phones to download apps to - your old phone name and your new phone name. And I've also had the occasional app out of many that just doesn't re-install for some reason.
Two words : Titanium Backup (though mainly only useful if you can restore your old rom, run a backup, then flash the new rom back).
While google can half-ass restore your downloads (settings may not always be intact), Titanium Backup will actually restore all your backed up apps along with their full settings/etc. It can also restore your rom's Android ID so that restored apps don't conflict.
But yea since you already have it, you should know least that much. Personally I have not found anything better than 4EXT Recovery and Titanium Backup Pro when it comes to backing up and restoring data.
ps: it can backup your SMS/Call Logs/Wifi Access points, etc to XML files on your SD card which can be re-imported later, just in case the SMS/Etc backups performed are not compatible with your new rom's apps.

Just joined the forum today and already used Chainfire's CF-Auto root on my Note 8 and so far so good, I have also installed Nandroind manager and nandroid online back up, along with busy box. Titanium Back up was also recommended, and that's as far as I dare go.
So, I suppose, I want to ask, where do i go next, I have no idea where to start or how to go about it. I want to install a ROM but really not sure what to do or which one is best.
How do I back things up and will they be easy to re install after I do so
I want to free up space on my SD card to an external Card too.

So far you seem to be doing good. You chose one of the easiest methods to Rooting, that's a great start.
Now, I would recommend making a NANDroid Backup. I've never used NANDroid Manager/Online Backup so you would have to actually mess around with it yourself. You can't go wrong if you press an option that says "Backup", so If you see an option to make a NANDroid Backup, DO IT! Once thats done, you would want to put that backup onto your computer or an external HDD.
Now Titanium Backup would be used for apps that you have installed. Example, lets say you have the game Angry Birds on your Note 8.0 and you've gotten really far. You have another Android Tablet or even an Android Phone and want to play Angry Birds on those devices but you want to pick up from where you left off. Thats where Titanium Backup would come in. But thats not the only use of it. If you Flash a ROM onto your Note 8 and you reformat your device, you will lose your progress. Well if you made a backup of your apps via Titanium, you can easily recover them! Even the apk. itself so you don't have to go to the Play Store and redownload it! You can create scheduled backups so you don't forget to do it manually yourself. You will figure out more once you use it after a while.
There's plenty of apps that will also more your installed apps on your device to your External SD Card. I use App2SD, its pretty easy to use and has never failed me so I don't bother looking for a "newer better" one.
I have never used Busy Box, I've heard of it though. I believe its just some type of Framework used in LINUX, I remember an app needed access to BusyBox and I didn't have it installed, so I just installed it to get where I wanted to go. You could find plenty of threads as to what it is and how to use it. I've never bothered unless I had to know about it for some reason.
Once you make a NANDroid, you are free to install ROMs. Choose anyone you think is good, read the posts and see if people are happy with a certain ROM. For my Note 8, I'm choosing to leave it Stock Rooted. You can also find Stock Rooted ROMs that have some extras besides what the manufacturer provides in their Devices.
There are also ROMs that will resemble what a Stock Vanilla Android device would be like, which is what the Nexus Devices that Google sell's on their Play Store such as the Nexus 4 or the older model, the Galaxy Nexus. There is a new Nexus device coming soon dubbed the "Nexus 5". Thats what I'm waiting for!

Now your rooted i highly recomend multi window manager its on the playstore and allows you to add ANY apps you like to multiwindow you can play a game and watch a movie at the same time, or have ebay open while on whatsapp it lets you choose what to put in the note 8s multiwindow and works very well.

It's best to use either ClockWorkMod (CWM) or use TeamWinRecoveryProject (TWRP). Flash your ROM through one of those. Also be sure to follow the installation process provided in the developers thread.
I'm kinda new at this. I know about being able to use backups with TWRP and I know about MW Apps Manager but that's about it. Please make suggestions of how I can improve the experience of using the Note 4.

I'm going to assume that you have already installed the TWRP custom recovery. You probably already know that you have to do that before you can obtain root. Aside from being able to flash custom ROMs, none available right now, there are a number of apps that you can install that do a number of things that you cannot do without root. I'll list a few that I use and what they do but the list is not all encompassing:
--Titanium Backup (root)--a great tool for freezing unwanted apps, backing up apps/data etc
--Greenify--enables you to set user installed apps to "hibernate" a few minutes after you have finished using them. Significantly improves battery life.
--LagFix--an app, when run, that can eliminate "lag" when/if it occurs on the phone most of the time.
--SD Maid--a great file manager app that enables you to control which apps start at power on, enables the user to really clean out cache, duplicate files, orphaned files and compact databases. Saves memory resources and keeps your phone running smooth and clean.
--adaway--as the name implies, keeps those pesky little ads from showing up in apps.
--exposed--a favorite of many users. Enables you to customize a number of settings, notifications etc.
That's the apps I use that can only be run with root. I'm sure some other users will chime in here an provide some other things that root offers.

You can run anything you want, it's not going to hurt root. Root is really only a door, or access, to settings/system files that you wouldn't normally have. Any app that you can run without root can be run safely with root. The opposite is not true. There are a number of apps that cannot be run without root. A good way to find most of the apps that require root is to go to the Play Store and just search for "root apps". There's a bunch out there that you may want to try.

The only thing you have to be aware of to protect root is taking an OTA update. Now that you have a custom recovery and root the likely hood that you would be able to find and download an OTA is not likely, but if by chance you receive a notice that an OTA is available do not download and install it. If by chance the phone automatically downloads it and tries to install it, the OTA should fail so you'll be alright.
Be careful not to flash or ODIN a retail firmware. That is probably the biggest warning I can offer. Retail firmware, when flashed, will lock your bootloader. You can flash a modem or a kernel or a recovery, but not the entire firmware .tar md5 file.

By the way. Since you are new to root and custom recoveries, the first thing you should do, right now, is do a backup. Power off your phone, go into TWRP recovery (hold down the volume up, home and power buttom all at the same time). Continue to hold them down until you see the TWRP splash screen, then you can let them go. From the on screen menu select backup. Choose which file you want backed up. I recommend you do boot, system, data, modem, EFS and recovery as a minimum. After the backup is complete return to the main menu and select reboot. Do it right now

I'm not sure, I don't use it. But, if I remember correctly I think you go into settings>more networks>and turn on mobile hotspot. But again, I don't use it so I'm not sure. Have you done your backup yet? It is the only safety net you will have until a developer releases a ROM we can flash. Don't look for Samsung to release any firmware for the Developer Edition...it ain't going to happen. Your backup and TWRP are the ONLY safety net you have right now. I can't emphasize that enough.

Outstanding. Didn't want to "harp" on the backup thing, but I've seen so many users root, TWRP and then do something to brick their phone and they didn't have a backup. They were screwed.

We should probably do a backup on a schedule. Someone could make an app that does a back up automatically on a schedule. I'm going to put Back Up Note 4 on my calender then back it up

It's diffidently a good idea to have a recent backup and the original backup of your stock ROM. The only problem with a lot of backups is keeping straight what backup is what and the amount of space they consume. Memory is cheap I know, but backups can eat up storage real fast, LOL.
Yes. Agree with space but every backup I do, I also have my TWRP folder sync'd to my Dropbox account. So what ever changes are made go their. I also save them on the laptop as well as a thumb drive. Been burned once on my note 3. Now, is there the stock md5 file for the developers edition like on the note 3's?

Yes. Agree with space but every backup I do, I also have my TWRP folder sync'd to my Dropbox account. So what ever changes are made go their. I also save them on the laptop as well as a thumb drive. Been burned once on my note 3. Now, is there the stock md5 file for the developers edition like on the note 3's?

No there is not a stock md5 for the DE and there most likely will not be. In the past Samsung has never released a firmware package for their DE phones, not that I have ever seen anyway. What your phone came with is what you got. NO OTAs and no updates of any kind in the future...that's if Samsung behaves like they have in the past. That's why making a good back up of your stock (no root) when you first get recovery is so important. And, making a backup after root of course.
Do you mind me asking how you sync..............

your TWRP folder to your Dropbox account.. Did you transfer the folder to your computer first or can you sync the folder on your phone to DropBox directly ?
I use dropsync select the folder and it just does it automatically.

I'm assuming that the Greenify is the one with the leaf?
Is LagFix the purchase version? Is it an app by itself, or does it require exposed?
Do you use the SD Maid Pro Version?
Does the Adaway require exposed as well?
