Wife was moaning at me the other day saying that I always get good
phones for myself and not for her (She's got a galaxy ace).
Anyway got a good deal on a Arc S.
So now I have got a few questions
Obviously for you wife/girlfriend you always want a stable, good battery & decent speed.
So do I stick with the stock rom or go custom?
If i stick with stock, is there are certain stock rom i should go for?
Is there a recommended stock rom + custom kernal setup?
If custom is the way, which one?
Also is there a simple way i can tell if my bootloader is locked?
Is there anything else i need to be made aware about the phone?
Many Thanks
she must install some working apn switch from the market and use data off when she is not browsing on net when has the phone in pocket ready for calls only also properly format battery which means charge battery from almost 0% to full for first month every charging, never start when is battery 30% etc and finish before is full charged, dont use any kind of task killer
Romwise, cm7 is good though no bravia engine or xloud, a few minor screen/camera issues but usual cm pros i.e. Very fast and themable. Miui is also very good with it's own theming and usability functions, but can have iffy battery life. There's a couple of modded stock roms, arc tweaked and Arconium. I've used them all and use the last two as I prefer the se ui. Generally battery life can vary hugely, mainly kernel dependent(doomlords posts) and how the phone is used. There's a code somewhere here that you can use in the dialler to find out if bootloader can be unlocked, but generally if it's payg or some contracts then it won't, initially. Vodafone contract phones are unlockable, but if it's not sim-free then you may need to pay, try alejandrissimo on this forum. Try stock first, but with bootloader locked it means no custom kernel therefore no overclock, cm7, miui etc.

I would definately recommend stock. It's stable, SE's home launcher is fast and easy to use, and there's enough stuff in the development section for the stock ROM. I tried a tweaked stock ROM, CM7 and MIUI, but I always returned to stock because it's superior at the moment.
I would certainly root the phone and remove bloatware (maybe install the Arconium ROM, see development section). Also, I use the app CPU Tuner, which get's another 2 hours out of your battery by underclocking it when the screen is off.
What phone do you own yourself by the way ?

Thanks everyone for your advice
Read in the dev forum that supercharger might be a good option? is it necessary? does the phone lag without it?
My first phone was a HTC Hero, loved it - great amount of roms then back in Jan this year i bought a HTC Desire - and thats got a great amount of roms too.
I noticed for some reason there doesnt seem to be a huge amount of development in SE Arc forums, which is unfortunate as i am a SE Fan.
My next phone is going to be the galaxy nexus as I am a big fan of vanilla android, but i have got my eye on the SE Nozomi.
With stock rom then supercharger would be a recommendation, miui or cm7 don't need it and the modded stock roms already have tweaks built in.

i would say keep stock (it's nice and complete), root and remove all of the bloatware, use Titanium BackUp to move apps2sd the easy way and look around in themes section for nice UI tweaks and some extra SE widgets.
I'm happy with it (thus far...) and i am 'the wife' too

It came with .42 firmware so i upgraded it to .58 today and removed all the bloatware not going to bother moving apps to sd.

I've rooted my Arc S, deleted JunkApps and installed V6 SuperCharger.
And it's more than stable, quite good battery (I'm only charging every 24 hours), and about the speed I'm really satisfied.

the code to check if boot loader is locked is *#*#7378423#*#*
And is under >service info>configuration and will say unlocked bootloader allowed: YES if you can unlock it.
Hope that helps

Got an Arc S on the way - is there a quick list anywhere of the junk / pointless apps that can be removed? I'll probably start with rooted stock (with the junk removed) before thinking about something else.
Just if anyone is interested....
My wife has got the T-Mobile £7.50 sim so I really just wanted a new handset for her
So...
Using TopCashBack Site i went to dialaphone website and got the following offer
Free SE Arc S (White) Unlocked, Bootloader unlockable, unbranded
free delivery
02 24m £21.50 500mb data
£110 Auto cashback after 22 days
Got TCB to match quidco for dialaphone £50.50
Cancel the data after cashback claim paid by TCB
Cancel gadget line trial
So my contract goes down to £15.50pm
after 9 months are up drop down a tariff to £10.50pm
So assuming my maths is correct, the phone will end up costing me..
2 x 21.50
7 x 15.50 (after data removed)
15 x 10.50 (drop down a tariff)
plus £160 cash back
£149
Hey there, I have a some questions 4 r I hope I get an answer for:
1-I'm a galaxy S1 user with no lock Bootloader, does it hard to lock and root than flash Rom's as Simmy phones?
2-what's the known problems of this device? Have the new update solve it out?
3-in my S1 ,in a normal day use , I got 23h of battery life (with sync,Bluetooth,...off) what's the result in the OneX ?
4-users said the battery life is massively increased ,by how mush you guess?
5-does the update solve the 23fps issue in video recorded?
6-do u think this device will keep getting updates as mush it can handle it ,or will be abounded due to the company passing through a financial problem, especially when it abound the desire HD ,while it can handle the ICS ,my S1 can
7-I would like to see what have the new update add +pic's.
Thx, sorry for writing in such a miss ,by the way ,how's my English ,I'm really interested in what u think

You can find answers to all your questions by searching this forum. Most of the topics (i.e: how to root, battery life etc.. have their own dedicated threads). But I will give you few simple answers to start you off.
It involves several steps, but they are very easy to follow. Keep in mind : Unlocking the boot loader would most probably void your warranty, and there is NO way to revert it back to the original state without any traces ! (You might be able to root without unlocking the boot loader in the future, but its not possible yet. For more info read up on S-OFF)
There is a known wifi antenna issue with older models, a screen flickering problem (to which there is already a software fix), and multi-tasking issues in HTC’s ROM. Some have also reported overheating under heavy 3D gaming
I too had a S1 previously; in my experience battery life is about the same (perhaps slightly less in One X, but not much). I can comfortably get through the day (16+hrs) which is enough for me.
Massively increased compared to what?
Didn’t check, don’t record videos much
S1 never got an official ICS update from Samsung, if you consider custom ROMs (i.e CM ROMs) then One X has plenty of support in that department. So even if HTC fails to keep up with the updates the community will (however you may not get all the benefits of the phone with 3rd party ROMs, for example camera features or quality)
It didn’t add much visual changes, except the ability to remove a special menu bar that appeared with some older apps, and a quick settings option in the notification area. Again search for more info.
I think the ota and better benchmark of hox put Sammy nervous. I read the full Forum and never see such a movement and problemas, and questions. Htc is doing well so.
My friend, the Forum is full of thread about general info, roms, kernels, mods.
So dont be lazy and read. I spend 3 hours a day reading and learning so you can do the same.
Cheers

First i wanna say "Hello!" the whole HOX community.I bought a few days ago a ONE X and i must say cause i`m very happy to be the owner of this phone.I coming from an htc sensation,so i`m not a stranger The HOX was bought from Germany and i use it in Romania.Last days i did official update to 4.2.2 with Sense 5 after that i unlock bootloader and root cause i wanted to remove some system apps i don`t use.
So,now i want to ask you guys of you Sense 5 experience. How are the battery?Cause mine are not so good. And i don`t know, yesterday was better but today my battery drain much.I see in battery monitoring app cause kernel (Android OS) consumed most (cpu usage: 4h 11m).Otherwise,i must say Sense 5 are very smooth and i`m very impressed.I saw there Vipers and ARHD roms who are very good in my Sensations. And again, ask you guys, what rom(Sense 5 rom) did you use and have best battery life? Also, you use custom kernel? I know cause aren`t "best" rom, must try different combinations of roms/kernels but i want a starting point
Finally,i want to apologize for my bad english.Cheers!

Welcome to hox community!
Back to your post, there is no clear definition of "best rom" as it's very much subjective, and even two phones with same specs, cid, rom..will perform differently.
Well, in short, you like sense 5, and now just updated to latest official stock 4.2.2 with some concerns of battery. So, same as me, try Alex V kernel with better battery time, also some cool tweaks.
Btw, you might note that after update or flash new rom, battery normally gets better after a few cycle of full charge. So, dont judge too quickly.

Everyone's battery life is different because everyone has different uses. Apart from battery saver mode you can try "greenify" in the play store to make some apps sleep when you are not using them.
and you will not get an answer to "which is best rom" as it is not allowed, against the forum rules, it is best just to read about different rom's and try them yourself.

You're welcomed. I was once newcomer before.
Stock kernel is also good and i used it since ota update until i found alex v kernel with s2w/dt2w functions which are really amazing, and can help the power button last longer, plus other benefits. And I started using alex v since then.
Also, wanna share some info: with official ota 4.2.2 update, my phone is now at new hboot 1.73, base 4.19.707.3, and radio.. Most of the custom roms are built on previous base which I dont see good reason to switch to those custom roms, unless it's using same or newer base than mine. So, just to ensure proper checking before flashing custom roms.
Have good time with hox..

My phone cid is HTC_044 (Asia_WWW), using stock rom + alex v kernel. I tried some 4.2 and 4.3 custom roms but still prefer stock due to above rom base reason. But you can try custom rom freely as base is same.

Factory reset after rom flashing could make battery life better and smoother (as phone system is likely to run without any obstacles).
Play with stock kernel for some days and notice the battery life, then try Alex V Kernel and compare.
For me, I lower CPU speed to 1.2GHz and phone is awesome: running smoothly, just get warm up a little bit after nearly 1 hour of constant web surfing or play heavy games (Fifa 14, Real Racing...). Ofcourse, some small delay can be encountered but it's fair enough in exchange of cooler temperature and better battery. Man, try some small tweaks until it seems best for your usage!

Guys,i can have HQS in stock rom?If yes, where i can find them?
EDIT:Solved with Sense 5 Toolbox
So, I just got this phone about 2 days ago (After sending one back due to over heating issues) Anyways, I want to get the most out of my new phone.
So, I have a few questions I can hopefully have answered.
1). I want to know the BEST way to improve my battery life if need be and to avoid any type of heating issues since I am a heavy gamer (Order and Chaos, Brave Frontier, PPSSPP emulator)
2). What is the benefit to rooting my device? Will rooting my device void my warranty, and if so, if I were to unroot, would i still be under warranty?
3). ROMs and Kernels, are they stable? My last device was the Galaxy S4. Ran perfectly never overheated (Got slightly warm, even when hardcore gaming) though. When I installed a ROM (Wicked, Cyanogenmod Android KitKat 4.4.4) to it, it started to overheat from just going on Facebook or about 5 minutes on any game. Continued to overheat even after I flashed back to the Original Stock Rom.
Really loving this device as is right now but would love to learn some new techniques especially when it comes to heating issues or battery drains (So far so good, with the exception that Brave Frontier made my phone really hot earlier when on for about 10 minutes on 100% brightness)
Thanks in advance

1. Best way to improve battery life to is freeze un-needed apps and remove their start-up abilities.
2. The benefits to rooting your device are limited only by your knowledge of the apps and why you are rooting it. It is safe to say your warranty is voided. You should just accept that and move on.
3. It depends on what rom and kernel you intend to run. The Alpha AOSP builds are stable but have known bugs. Zone-Rom is a very stable 10m build that i run on my little brothers phone with no issues. I am currently running stock on a modified kernel and will run the aosp roms on the weekend to get test them. The only heating issues i have ever seen are dependent on the cpu governors. If you are running 100% performance with keeping all 4 cpus on they are going to get hot, simple as that.
Browse through the forums. There is a ton of good information for you here.

Thanks, I have been browsing since this morning. Found a few thins here and there Like Snapdragon Kernel (WHich I am really interested in) , but not really any help in how to even start.
I have a slight problem that has been on my phone since last ngiht when I switched to ART, whenever I start up my phone, estimated battery time left always says around 3 hours at 100 percent, but increases during the day to about 22 hours lol dont know if its really a problem or not though, but I dont think i should be asking that here...
I ask about Rooting because my device is fresh and I still have my waranty just incase something happens to my phone. I want to know if unrooting and going back to original stock will avoi problems if I need to return it.
If you're able to, I would like to be able to learn what rooting method is best and ho to go about getting the SNapdragon kernel on my stock firmware (This was so much easier on my s4 lol)

Use purple drake to root in Android development... It will freeze up and require a battery pull. Once you reboot install supersu from Playstore and twrp manager. Once you have twrp installed, create a back up and then install the zip drive for the kernel. This must be loaded on internal storage. Reboot and enjoy

If you are running the T-Mobile d851 we have unlocked bootloader.
Feel free to pm me. This thread should be in questions and the mods can get mad

2. The benefits to rooting your device are limited only by your knowledge of the apps and why you are rooting it. It is safe to say your warranty is voided. You should just accept that and move on.

That's not true, you can go back to 100% complete stock via CLICK HERE and you should have no problems returning your device and not having to worry about an out of warranty fee if there's nothing else with your phone.
Hello all !
I recently buy an samsung galaxy s9, I love it because of his size, today all manufacturers are racing for the biggest screen diagonal, but forget about the people who like compact phones.
the only thing I don't like is that the battery doesn't really last. I use some social networks like instagram or whatsapp to chat and the battery is not consistent enough for me, I think. (I uninstalled the bloatware app and made a maximum of optimization).
So I'm thinking about the solution of installing a custom rom. I'm doing some research and I like the pixel experience or the lineageOS.
The reason of my post is to ask you, you who know much better than me, is it really going to increase the duration of use?
Do you have any advice on this ? I read that you have to calibrate the battery after installing a rom but maybe you have other advice, a rom in particular, settings to do ?
For rooting i find this thread in this forum > https://www.thecustomdroid.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-plus-root/
but i got a SM-G960U1 that is not supported..
Thanks you a lot for all ur answer and information good to know XDA members !
Well I have a galaxy S9(5.8" size) and it's running NezukoOS with android 11. Pretty fluid and with light use I can get it to last me all day long, however I turn it off during night. If you really want more battery life, you should considerer using a custom kernel, as that is what is really going to improve battery life. The custom ROM will bring new features and make your phone feel different, but it usually doesn't improves battery life(at least the ones I tried out didn't help battery at all).
Hope this is useful!

Very helpful, thanks
Can you recommend a kernel for better battery life?
And another question to NezukoOS or general AOSP roms.. can you unlock the device by pressing the 'invisible' home button on the screen? Is this option still available in these roms?
Best

sorry for my bad english Greetings From Germany!!
Well I never used a custom kernel as I didn't had any problems with battery life, but I do know a ROM which comes with a modded kernel. It's call Noble ROM, and brings ONE UI 3 with android 11 to the galaxy S9. I tried it out and it works pretty good, and when you install it you have a modded kernel that will ask you if you want to improve performance or battery life, here is the link if you are interested on it https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-03-2021-sm-n960f-fd-n-sm-g96xf-fd-n.4244747/ However if you prefer the stock Android I can't really help you, but for sure there are a lot of kernels on XDA forums, you just need to search one.
With the 'invisible' button, on all ROMs I tried(EvolutionX, Pixel Experience, HavacOS...) when the screen is off and you press it, the phone turns on, but once the screen is on it dones't work anymore. I didn't miss it actually, because I use navigation gestures, so the only moment I used was to turn it on. I don't know if that answers your question... Also I didn't find any options to modify pressure sensitivity on settings.
If you still have any questions feel free to ask me!

I also tried noble Rome, but every time it was very laggy and the interior assistant almost always crashed. I had to restart my device very often. My phone had also overheated and I uninstalled it again. no matter how often I did a reflash it was always laggy as described above

Oh yeah that's bad. My phone also overheated when I tried it however I thought it could be because I overclock it's CPU. My main problem was the camera didn't work almost all times and I needed to restart the phone continuously, so I went back to NezukoOS.
I also liked ONE UI however I don't know if that happened to you but my phone was very slow on ONE UI and animations almost all times were very laggy. That's why I start using AOSP, and also because I really like the new features.

I am also considering whether I should stay with aosp or go back to the sttock firmware. Both have advantages and disadvantages

I don't bo back because of various reasons. First and more important, it's starting to be obsolete and Android 12 is going to be released in August I think, which makes android 10 be 2 years old. Also this customs ROMs give a lot of features that I don't find on the original ONE UI, like caffeine. Finally, performance. My phone was slow and laggy on stock firmware but now its super fast, as if it was brand new. Hope this help you decide.

Yeah I imagine that would happen. Glad to know we have one more user on this ROM
Wow very nice posts of all of you guys thanks a lot.
What do you think about arrow os? I am undetermined which one i should give a try. I prefer a very clean and hardly debloated os.
Some experiences?
I dont like the Samsung stuff so i'd like to try aosp. I think i can live without volte and wifi call
No problem! Glad to know that this is useful.
I tried Arrow OS however I used it only for 2 days. The ROM was good and seem to be stable however it didn't have a function which for me was crucial, smart charging (charges your phone only to 80% to slow down its degradation) so I went back to NezukoOS. Arrow OS and AOSP are in general don't have bloatware and useless applications preinstalled however if you don't want a lot of features PixelExpirience(not the plus version) is going to be good for you. It's simple, very smooth and almost identical to a Google Pixel experience. LineageOS and ArrowOS however have more features built-in.
Hope this helps you choose!
