There was a thread like this in the Galaxy S II forum (where I used to reside), and it was a very useful thread for Australian owners to compare radio preferences on different carriers and have general conversation amongst other Aussies!
This thread is basically to discuss the GN, official updates from carriers, as well as support for rooting and flashing your GN (whether its from Telstra, Optus or whoever offers it!). Use it as a starting point, as a guide, or just to chat amongst each other!
Start the thread by posting your setup on your Galaxy Nexus, followed by any questions you may have. I'm hoping there is a few of us floating around here!
I'll also have a list of Galaxy Nexus users and what network they reside on in this first post.

Thread will be updated as more information is added!
So starting the thread, I have a Galaxy Nexus running AOKP B25. Using Fugumod kernel, awesome one! Highly recommend. Modem is XXKL1 on Telstra.
I'll join in.
Galaxy Nexus running AOKP B26, franco nightly 18.6 and XXKK6 on Telstra.
I'm on telstra, gnex running modaco 4.04, with Franco latest kernel, and stick treats radio. Runs well but hoping for a better radio and some other tweaks, this thread is a great idea
AOKP milestone 3, Franco nightly kennel, xxkl1 radio
Flawless on Optus

Getting my Nexus on March 4th (my birthday ), I will be on Virgin Mobile. I can't wait! I don't think I've seen anyone else in Perth with a Nexus.
go to the city, you'll see some there. Or the guys with it are actually working hard so you don't see them clowning around all day
On Telstra, running stock 4.0.2 with XXKL1 radio.
i9250t, Telstra, Stock 4.0.2 (ODEX, Rooted), DVKK6.
I'm wandering around town almost everyday of the week.. sadly enough with my nexus in hand most of the time lol.

I'm using DVKK6, get overall stronger signal, but occasionally slower data, tried the XXKK6 radio which had weaker overall signal, but faster data.

AOKP is a great alternative in the mean time if you ever feel the itch to flash a ROM
AOKP b26, stock kernel. Got mine on launch day from Telstra and almost left it completely stock until I realised how easy it was to unlock and root compared to my old Desire! Also because I wanted to use Google Wallet, confused the hell out of the guy at 7-Eleven.
I haven't changed my radio from stock as I haven't really had a problem with speeds or signal in Melbourne (excluding where Telstra is hammered no matter what, i.e. Southern Cross).
Hey all, first post nice to do it in an aussie thread!
Currently on stock ICL53F just rooted XXKK6 radio and works fine with vodafone in Brisbane.
Tried AOKP and lean kernel which was great but I to am waiting on CM9 development to settle.
Cheers!

I was going to install Google Wallet the day I got my Nexus but then I thought about possible consequences e.g. Wallet screwing up when I swap ROMs, Wallet screwing up when Wallet officially comes to Australia etc. Is it safe to install or are they likely issues? Also I heard the Google prepaid cards have been screwing up lately...

And I think that once you use the prepaid card, you can't load it back up because you need an American card.

I have searched through numerous threads but found mixed answers...
Some say to use european version and some say use North America based radios...
I am currently using the XXKK6 right now and the performance is "OK" but I have feeling it CAN be better...
I live in NYC and T-Mobile service is pretty good out here... Please let me know which radios work the best in your opinion.
Currently running stock Yakju 4.0.4 with unlocked bootloader.
Try XXLA2 considering that is the latest out with the recent yakju OTA. I myself have not seen any major/significant boost to signal strength nor data speeds since my signal here is always superb.
I was using that one on TMob in Atlanta on 4.0.2 until my OTA came in last now. Now I'm 4.0.4 with XXLA2 and its a lot stronger.
I have my radios set to US version, not automatic if that helps.
UGLC1 is better than XXLA2 for me. NYC as well.

UGCL1, Where can I find this? Its not in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345 Thread....
v4.0.2 and XXKK6 radio with Tmobile here in San Francisco. No call quality or data speed complaints to report. Fwiw I don't work inside a big building office type settings.
I seen Speedtest downloads from 1mbps to 7mbps and uploads from 1mbps to 3mbps. Performance often depends on location and variable network saturation levels.
I'm on XXLA2 and it seems great T-Mo in WA.

I was thinking of leaving the stock android 4.0.4 radio on my Gnex when it arrives this friday. but i'm curious if changing the radio will improve data speeds.
I want to change to UGLC1 just for testing purposes, and then revert back to the one in the 4.0.4 update but i dont know how to do this.
could someone please post a link to a tutorial which will show me how, thanks.

yes changing radios will improve/worsen your data speed.
you have to fastboot flash it... i believe you have to be bootloader unlocked to manually flash these images via bootloader mode.
follow the ROOT guide without using any tool kits (the process of.... fastboot oem unlock) ... just don't root, after its unlocked then type
fastboot flash radio <radioname>.img (make sure its set in your SDK folder). you can find this by googling it / searching it within XDA

That is NOT the latest North America radio. The latest is UGLC1.
UGLC1 > UGLA4 for me.
i'm on UGKL1 and it has been great for me. gotten up to 8Mbps down and 3Mbps up and great service almost everywhere. except places where i've always gotten bad service.
Any reason for me to upgrade to the latest? which i guess is UGLC1?
i am T-Mobile in NYC area and noticed that UGLC1 took really long to regain signal / service when getting out of subway. it was noticeably slower... It was actually longer than the XXLA2. I am flashing UGLA4 now and will report my findings
Just got a great deal on a Nexus ($250) and am currently using it with T-Mobile in Tampa/Wesley Chapel, FL. Just flashed JB along with the JB baseband and signal is okay compared to what it came with. Any advice (stay, go to UGXXX, or back to XX___). Thanks.

you'll have to try the radios to find what works Best for you. It can vary with location, weather, buildings around you, cell towers nearby, congestion, how you hold your phone, military bases nearby, etc.
Knew it wouldn't be this easy. Thanks, though.

There's no perfect radio. Everyone will have different results with different radios.
FWIW I'm using the stock 4.1 w/ xxlf1 radio and it's fine on T-Mobile.
Attached below are fastboot and CWM images for a new radio that I just extracted from the Telstra 4.01 -> 4.04 OTA that was released yesterday.
The radio is DVLF1 (I9250TDVLF1) and has not been seen before.
This radio is best suited to 850mhz 3G networks.
cwm-radio-i9250t-dvlf1.zip MD5:4F1EEE9C598D554EBD1F23CDB510BB72
radio-maguro-i9250t-dvlf1.img.zip MD5: 8CC3D43867076EE028BF758BD7B37F94
Only been running it for an hour so far and seems OK, but will post further feedback after a few days.
But why? Just go Yakju... Telstra suck at updates

It's a Telstra radio, not the Telstra ROM. I've been yakju since day 1.. I flashed Telstra's ROM just to grab the new radio. DVKK6 has been awesome on Telstra, and the JB XXLF1 radio was terrible. Telstra users looking for the best radio may wish to try it, that is why.
Thanks for doing this!
So, just to confirm.. you're using this just fine with Jelly Bean?

You can find a backup here. Keep in mind that unless your carrier uses the 850MHz frequency, the stock JB radio might be better for you.

And you seem to be right, I'm on T-mobile here in the U.S. using AWS 1700/2100Mhz and this radio just plain sucks for me, it refuses to pick up 3G for me in my room where I get a good 3G signal, so I flashed back the stock Jelly Bean Radio XXFL1

Telstra's network uses 850mhz so should be fine on that band. Personally I'd only recommend this radio for Australian Telstra users.

Yeah no worries. I had already ripped it but hadn't gotten around to posting it yet. Here's the RIL zipped, and also a flashable CWM zip.
MD5 for libsec-ril.so: C5F26C3D9AEB859CB7F8B17F1DFA45B2
MD5 for the CWM zip: 652F2DACB2D755840ADE251C32321C81
Based on that MD5, it looks like it's the same RIL as XXLA2.

The original Telstra radio DVKK6 is awesome on 850mhz and the jury is still out on whether this new radio is any better, so if you're happy with that.. I don't see any reason to change.
From 24 hours use, this new radio seems very similar to DVKK6 and is performing well.. but it's not like there is a massive performance difference.
living in Panama on Cable and Wireless (850),this radio is a big jump. Going from -85db to -53db, after flashing and reboot.
Thank you very much
I just installed this radio and now I can't send SMS .....but I'm not 100% sure I didn't mess with a setting with 4636....can someone help with setting etc? Telstra in Melbourne, if that makes a difference.
Back to XXLF1 for me...
Gave this a try on 4.1.1 (Bigxie) but the reception on 3G was at least 10dBm lower (97+ vs 80-) throughout my tests, and it never left "3G" mode. Never switched to "H." Transfer rates were much slower, too - barely 1Mbps down, 100K up. Minutes later, 1.8Mbps down and 1M up on XXLF1.
It DID boot in the correct mode though - WCDMA Preferred.
The "International" JB radio/RIL works better for me; never had an issue with it, so I'm back on it.
Note: I did change the RIL to match the radio, so maybe if someone else tries this radio on JB they should keep the JB RIL and see if it makes a difference. I am in a congested cell, btw.
YMMV.

I suspect you've changed something in the service menu. Your SMSC might be incorrect. Try the fix below.
Telstra's SMSC is+61418706700 which must be entered in PDU format:07911614786007F0
- Open dialer
- Type *#*#4636#*#* then click on 'phone information', then scroll down to 'SMSC'
- click 'refresh'. If it is not 07911614786007F0, type it in and click on 'update'.
- Reboot.

I've had many Android devices over the years and flashed a few ROMs in my day. I haven't messed with any of that in quite a long while though.
I've recently switched from all Sprint and all HTC devices to T-Mobile's Galaxy S3. I searched and found the thread about the Team Sonic modem flasher. I tried to read as much as possible but don't think my question is answered there.
Basically.. I get no service at my house and cannot manually select the AT&T network. Everyone with AT&T (including my girlfriend who has the S3) gets service here. Can I flash an AT&T baseband on my T999? I currently have UVLJ4 and get nothing inside and 2G outside whereas all the AT&T people get 4G in my house.
Hope this hasn't been answered before.
Thanks
Sam
Pretty sure that's a no-no.
I think you could flash the modem, but you need to verify they use the exact same partition on both variants. If it flashed to the wrong partition you're likely to hard brick the phone.
An att modem is not going to get you on the att network. I seriously doubt it'd even let you even make a phone call on tmobiles network, though it could happen. I can't figure any real reason (other than pure dumb luck) that another carriers modem would be better than one coded specifically for the network you are on.
Your best bet is to try out all the available modems we already have before thinking about trying another carriers fw.
And search again, but look in the development stickies too! You may find other things you could try. For the moment the modem flasher is quite outdated. I may work on updating it this coming week for those who are still wanting it. We'll see!

Will this no-no brick my phone or will I just not be able to get any service once flashed and then flash back? I've been trying to scour XDA and the rest of the internet for answers. So far I found this info..
"The modems in the GS3 are SDR or software defined radios. Their frequency TX and RX spectrums can be modified through software. The nice thing about the MSM8960 SOC board is that the radios can be programmed to virtually any current GSM, HSPA or LTE frequency in use in the United States today"
If this is true, I should just be able to flash an AT&T baseband, correct? Then again, I read that the T999 doesn't have the LTE compatibility that every other S3 has. Is this software or hardware defined?
Its a hw limitation.
Call tmobile and let them know the situation. Since you're new to their network I doubt they'd do it but I've heard of them providing a cell repeater to put in your home. Worst they'll say is no!

We replied at the same times and I did not see this until I had already posted. Thank you. I guess I will try previous T-Mobile modems and see if one happens to be better for me. All I want is to roam but the phone won't let me choose the AT&T network even though it shows up in the network search. Customer service told me you are unable to roam as long as a T-Mobile network is available at your location.
I do not want to risk bricking so I will stay away from trying the AT&T modem as I am not familiar with this phone or any flashing that has come about in the past 2-3 years.
