Best Radio for T-Mobile?? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have searched through numerous threads but found mixed answers...
Some say to use european version and some say use North America based radios...
I am currently using the XXKK6 right now and the performance is "OK" but I have feeling it CAN be better...
I live in NYC and T-Mobile service is pretty good out here... Please let me know which radios work the best in your opinion.
Currently running stock Yakju 4.0.4 with unlocked bootloader.

Try XXLA2 considering that is the latest out with the recent yakju OTA. I myself have not seen any major/significant boost to signal strength nor data speeds since my signal here is always superb.

I was using that one on TMob in Atlanta on 4.0.2 until my OTA came in last now. Now I'm 4.0.4 with XXLA2 and its a lot stronger.
I have my radios set to US version, not automatic if that helps.

UGLC1 is better than XXLA2 for me. NYC as well.

mines vary... UGLC1 is the newest radio of them all though.
UG = North America
L = 2012
C = March
1 = Revision 1.

UGCL1, Where can I find this? Its not in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345 Thread....

v4.0.2 and XXKK6 radio with Tmobile here in San Francisco. No call quality or data speed complaints to report. Fwiw I don't work inside a big building office type settings.
I seen Speedtest downloads from 1mbps to 7mbps and uploads from 1mbps to 3mbps. Performance often depends on location and variable network saturation levels.

I'm on XXLA2 and it seems great T-Mo in WA.

I was thinking of leaving the stock android 4.0.4 radio on my Gnex when it arrives this friday. but i'm curious if changing the radio will improve data speeds.
I want to change to UGLC1 just for testing purposes, and then revert back to the one in the 4.0.4 update but i dont know how to do this.
could someone please post a link to a tutorial which will show me how, thanks.

yes changing radios will improve/worsen your data speed.
you have to fastboot flash it... i believe you have to be bootloader unlocked to manually flash these images via bootloader mode.
follow the ROOT guide without using any tool kits (the process of.... fastboot oem unlock) ... just don't root, after its unlocked then type
fastboot flash radio <radioname>.img (make sure its set in your SDK folder). you can find this by googling it / searching it within XDA

That is NOT the latest North America radio. The latest is UGLC1.
UGLC1 > UGLA4 for me.

i'm on UGKL1 and it has been great for me. gotten up to 8Mbps down and 3Mbps up and great service almost everywhere. except places where i've always gotten bad service.
Any reason for me to upgrade to the latest? which i guess is UGLC1?

i am T-Mobile in NYC area and noticed that UGLC1 took really long to regain signal / service when getting out of subway. it was noticeably slower... It was actually longer than the XXLA2. I am flashing UGLA4 now and will report my findings

[Baseband/Radio] UGKL1

This radio is for GSM Galaxy Nexus devices running Android 4.0.3-based ROMs (IML74K).
I have uploaded the UGKL1 baseband, which has indeed appeared as a post in other threads, but has not received a concise thread of its own. As implied by the file name, it can be flashed with CWM.
In my testing, it improved my HSPA performance over UGKK7, but of course your mileage may vary.
DOWNLOAD: HERE or HERE
MD5 SUM: 41b17cc37ceb6c57fed17dc90d6d7f39
Deciphering Samsung baseband codes:
UG = North America
XX = Europe
K = 2011 (11th letter of the alphabet)
L = December (12th letter of the alphabet)
# = Revision number
This means the radio is approximately one month newer than UGKK7, which breaks down to a North American radio from November, 2011.
//EDIT: Support confirmed for 850/1900/AWS via Rogers Canada and Mobilicity SIMs.
NOTE TO WIND MOBILE USERS:
as I've mentioned before, this radio causes problem for users on Wind Mobile. It does not detect roaming as roaming & will not shut off data roaming even if the option itself is turned off. This means that users will be getting HUGE phone bills. My Galaxy Nexus came with this radio default so I had to flash the XXKK6 radio to fix the issue. Just putting this out there as an FYI for everyone.
The only downside is that this baseband (KL1) has better reception than XXKK6
I am not alone in having this problem as there is a whole thread full of people having the same issue. I was the one who figured out the fix for everyone
I had the same problems with the UGKK7 radio as well, but again flashing the XXKK6 radio fixed the issue. So far i've only seen Wind Mobile users having this problem.
Here's proof:

I can confirm that UGKK7 hasn't given me any roaming issues nor extra charges in the couple weeks i've been using it with WIND, although my Virgin Mobile phone originally came with UGKL1 (another great reason bootloader unlocking should be allowed on every phone!).
What advantages do you find with KK6 over KK7? I've noticed slightly more reliable signal and speed going from KK6 to KK7 but would switch back if you believe the roaming issue prevails. Could it just be that I manually chose WIND Home instead of auto select?

Yes the manual select would prevent roaming/Try auto & see if it roams onto wind away but doesn't detect it as roaming
can u pls upload to dropbox or some other site? its not downloading right.

Well I just installed KK6 again and it's not working well at all... suddenly my download speed is almost half and it barely uploads. It's the same room where it was working a lot faster with KK7 so I think I may switch back and just manually select WIND Home like before.
If I'm doing that anyway could I just do that with KL1 too? I don't plan on roaming anytime soon so manually setting WIND Home would be ok?

Yeah, as I mentioned, KL1 has better reception on the "Wind Mobile" network than XXKK6 but the roaming issue is a pain in the ass. I didn't like switching to XXKK6, I just had to
If you don't care about roaming or are manually selecting network u should be ok. Call Wind back office & ask them to disable roaming. That way if by any chance it does roam then u aren't responsible.

Actually this Radio performs absolutely terrible on Rogers in Calgary and Rogers in Vancouver compared to XXKK6. I would defiantly not go as far as to say specifically for Canada.
Radios are very much trial and error, what works for some won't work for others.

Calling all At&t users with a custom 4.0.3 rom installed.

I know Google recommends xxkk6 or UGkk6 with 4.0.3 however I get abysmal battery life with xxkk6 and I get frequent cell service drops with the stock xxkk1 radio.
What radio are you guys using?

xx seems to work better with AWS/1700 bands. Try the UGKK7 and UGKL1 basebands. Those were designed for canadian carriers which should use the same bands as AT&T.
T-Mobile user here, but considering the phone isn't out here we're pretty much all in the same boat. I've tried XXKK1/6 and UGKL1/KK7, and UGKL1 was by far the best reception for me. My buddy on AT&T said the same. UG designated radios are North American.
My phone came with XXKK1, and when I unlocked the bootloader and switched to a 4.03 ROM, I switched to UGKL1. While I'm getting less "bars" than I used to with my Motorola Milestone, my actual signal strength is about the same (-60dbm in great areas, -90 in my house). I feel like UGKL1 is slightly better, but its tough to say.

[Baseband/Radio] DVLF1 (Telstra GSM)

Attached below are fastboot and CWM images for a new radio that I just extracted from the Telstra 4.01 -> 4.04 OTA that was released yesterday.
The radio is DVLF1 (I9250TDVLF1) and has not been seen before.
This radio is best suited to 850mhz 3G networks.

It's a Telstra radio, not the Telstra ROM. I've been yakju since day 1.. I flashed Telstra's ROM just to grab the new radio. DVKK6 has been awesome on Telstra, and the JB XXLF1 radio was terrible. Telstra users looking for the best radio may wish to try it, that is why.
Thanks for doing this!

You can find a backup here. Keep in mind that unless your carrier uses the 850MHz frequency, the stock JB radio might be better for you.

The original Telstra radio DVKK6 is awesome on 850mhz and the jury is still out on whether this new radio is any better, so if you're happy with that.. I don't see any reason to change.
From 24 hours use, this new radio seems very similar to DVKK6 and is performing well.. but it's not like there is a massive performance difference.
living in Panama on Cable and Wireless (850),this radio is a big jump. Going from -85db to -53db, after flashing and reboot.
Thank you very much
I just installed this radio and now I can't send SMS .....but I'm not 100% sure I didn't mess with a setting with 4636....can someone help with setting etc? Telstra in Melbourne, if that makes a difference.
Back to XXLF1 for me...
Gave this a try on 4.1.1 (Bigxie) but the reception on 3G was at least 10dBm lower (97+ vs 80-) throughout my tests, and it never left "3G" mode. Never switched to "H." Transfer rates were much slower, too - barely 1Mbps down, 100K up. Minutes later, 1.8Mbps down and 1M up on XXLF1.
It DID boot in the correct mode though - WCDMA Preferred.
The "International" JB radio/RIL works better for me; never had an issue with it, so I'm back on it.
Note: I did change the RIL to match the radio, so maybe if someone else tries this radio on JB they should keep the JB RIL and see if it makes a difference. I am in a congested cell, btw.
YMMV.

I suspect you've changed something in the service menu. Your SMSC might be incorrect. Try the fix below.
Telstra's SMSC is+61418706700 which must be entered in PDU format:07911614786007F0
- Open dialer
- Type *#*#4636#*#* then click on 'phone information', then scroll down to 'SMSC'
- click 'refresh'. If it is not 07911614786007F0, type it in and click on 'update'.
- Reboot.

The Geo of fellow members to better know which radio works best for your backyard. Not saying the other thread isn't working. Just want to get a better knowledge with Geo locations.

Flash some different radios and see how the reception is. Since things change so drastically from phone to phone and area to area, the best thing to do is try it yourself and see what works best.

not really. I have tried different radio still getting low speed. before I changed radio I have 3-5 Mbps, now can only reach 0.23 Mbps. I still don't know the problem is with radio or the data service. I actually have simple mobile. Their service is not good. Their advertising said the service is unlimited 4g speed no throttle so I signed up. I called customer service and they told me my account is normal. I may have to wait until end of month to get T-Mobile 4g to test my phone.
I have tried north America radio and takju radio, UG and XX. I'm using android 4.2 takju.
are you having any issue with radio? which service you have?
