I remember when android first came out and i was on winmo i hated the look of it. Now i cannot imagine running anything else. As for the future, i see google buying open webos and incorp into android. Id love to see a android desktop os in the future as well.

hp will put out webos in september and wash their hands of it.
Realistically, the next version will most likely have some desktop mode when plugged into a dock. This is why they bought moto and makes a lot of sense for a few reasons:
1. Lets android compete on a different level than ios or windows phone, allowing it to be your computer and your phone.
2. The hardware is ready there to do this, so it makes sense for them to make the leap now.
3. Instead of competing with toy OS's like ios, wp7, and webos, they would be playing with the big boys (aka, windows). Once your operating system is capable of real productivity, you can sell to the business market, which is huge and has had no competition. since the birth of windows 95.
4. This would require a new peripheral, which would boost sales and further lock people into Google's services.
After paying billions for moto and sitting on them, I can't see any other logical path for them to take.
On a side note, noticed most current phones have a barometer. Any ideas on how this might be used in the future?

It's a novel idea but I doubt they're up to this level yet. If anything I see it coming in later releases. Why do this when they can expand their whole hardware portfolio of selling chromebooks, tablets, etc.? I think that's more important than trying to turn their Android phones into desktop computers.
After paying billions for moto and sitting on them, I can't see any other logical path for them to take.

Take the large number of valuable patents and sell the failing Motorola hardware business that loses money every quarter.
I want Google to integrate Motorola's hardware business and make awesome "All Google" Nexus devices as much as any other Android fan, but I don't see them doing this, especially not in the short term. They'd be competing directly with the manufacturers they currently license Android to, which isn't a very good business model.

It seems natural to do that. But I don't know of Google would ever let that happen. Same reason why Apple wouldn't let that happen with iOS. I just feel Google has big plans for Android and for it to just be much more than a mobile OS. And plus with every Google service being so tightly integrated into Android it would be too hard for it to fail at this point. Time will tell! But I'm excited like you. And optimistic.

I used to think the same about google as a search engine, although they've proved me (and everyone) wrong by completely dominating the search engine market since the internet was very young. Google's motivated and has a lot of sway, and unlike most corporations, people really seem to LIKE google! I think if anyone can break the cycle of companies rising and falling, it's them
Android will be around for the time being.
The history is repeating. This is similar how did IBM-compatible PC beat Apple computer by adapting open standard versus propitiatory. Since PC accepts open hardware standard, it has further advantage than Mac.
Android (and Windows Phone 7.x) also accepts open hardware specifications, and the result is we have much wider choice of hardware instead of ONE.
An open os will sell itself. I can not wait to triple boot my pc with android. I would love having the exact same experience from my phone to my pc. And if anyone has the money and time to do it, it is Google.

Is anyone here actually excited about windows phone 7?
Don't think that i'm a "fanboy/hater" that is trying to stir up an issue.
I've been using windows MOBILE devices since 2003. My first expereince was with the i-mate jam (magician) which was rock solid. Then moved on to the i-mate k-jam (wizard). After that it was the jasjam (hermes), followed by the ATT tilt (kaiser) then the ATT fuze (raphael) and finally the ATT tilt2 (rhodium).
There have been some devices in between but these winmo phones were always my "daily drivers".
My affection towards windows mobile was how customizable they all are!
Now windows phone 7 comes along and i feel like microsoft is attempting to get into the iphone market. from all the reviews and other blogs i have read. WM7 is coming out as how the first iphone was... non-customizable and really limited/restricted!
Am i the only one that feels this way? that we've been dropped off for a consumer base that they're not even sure they're gonna get?
well I've already rounded up all the accessories for my tilt2 and ready to put it up on either the xda market page for sale or craigslist to get a dell streak (once it is actually released in the US)!
This is not a rant but more of a question.
Why are you excited about wm7?
I'm definitely excited.
It's the first new platform on market, I think it's fair to say that, for years.
Looks as quite well prepared and designed, very modern indeed.
Will be great to try this. And see how good it is.
As WM user it's quite a natural step to check this out.
Yea, it's not as customizable and hackable as WM6/5 but is WM5/6 all that customizable if you discount Hard-SPL/custom firmware? What makes people think that XDA members will not "unlock" WP7 just like we have WM6?
So yea, out of the box it's more restricted. But at least the carriers and OEMs can's ship utter crap to customers like they have been. We can then 'unlock' and add/hack as we wish. But instead of starting off with a dated and buggy OS that is missing so much of what other platforms have, we will have a clean, fast, solid base in to build on. One thing we'll need to look out for (and might become a hassle) is the update mechanism. Microsoft locked down the platform for good reasons, mainly so they could update all devices at the same time with the same OS updates. Chances are things that we add/modify will have to be re-done when MS releases updates.
So yea, don't worry about it being "locked down". It hasn't stopped the iPhone enthusiasts from having an unlocked platform. But it has provided them with a vibrant base that has a wealth of third party and consumer support.
Excited? No. neglected? Yes.
Dell streak, maybe. HP may do a WebOS tablet, and I really want that!

Yes Windows Phone 7 is a shift from business users/very technical to a general consumer approach and I hope it does well, so MS dedicates more resources to it to deliver what's missing in a speedy manner.
Yes. But I'm also not the one who will use it from the beginning.
No c & p, no file manager, no multitask, no Flash and HTML 5 at launch - a no go. It will be miserably crippled compared to my current WM 6.5.3 unfortunately.
Waiting for it.......

I have the same opinion. I don't really care about flash, but why not have it if needed? Also what's wrong to have the option of which apps you want to be running in the background? No filemanager? Seriously?

I've had a chance to play with Android 2.1 and 2.2 lately.
Works like a treat, has all the missing features.

I will get (extremely!) excited when they (officially!) enable multitasking, file system access and sideloading and add a usable browser.

Functionality? No. Some things are better, some worse (e.g. you can't have everything you like right there on the home screen, there is quite a lot of wasted space etc.)

From all the videos of WP7 and Android usage,
I wouldn't use term "blowing away".
The simplicity of WP7, yes.
But it's so overwhelming to see Android doing things WP7 cannot.
'Blows away' is nonsense. It looks better, is simpler and does a lot less.
Simpler also doesn't mean easier to use. E.g. when I can access any controls with one click, that makes it easier to use.
Which UI do I prefer? I don't know. One looks better, the other is more powerful.
None of them 'blows away' the other. Both blow away the iPhone's UI.

It's going to be an xbox portable. That's the xbox live integration is about. Microsoft even set up a mobile division of their Microsoft Gaming Studio to develop games for it. The phone will have mobile xbox games a lot like the psp that ties into xbox live. So you'll get achievements and build up your gamer score.
It'll be lacking a bit behind the PSP because it won't have a game pad but hopefully developers will take use of the landscape keyboard and give us the option of using that instead of a touch screen.

I don't know, but I am yet to see a WP7 in the wild in NYC.
I take a subway to work and back home Mo-Fri and all I see iPhones, Android phones and Blackberries.
I don't think this article is hating on WP7, just reporting on sub-par sales figures which is likely true.
I don't agree with his last point though, WP7 is clearly a new operating system and not just the next iteration of windows mobile.
I really think Microsoft has a branding problem with their phones right now and in my opinion they should have named the os something different in order to distance it from windows mobile.
I don't think the sales figures should be a huge concern though, Microsoft doesn't need sales figures to be spectacular right out of the gate, the majority of people still don't own smartphones. I think as long as they keep building a solid product sales will grow over the next few years.

Lol, I found that the same author writes these "stories":
1. Android outselling Windows Phone 7 by 15:1, says retailer
2. More bad news for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 launch --- potential buyers are not pleased
3. Windows Phone 7 launch --- what went wrong?
4. Windows Phone 7 launch, dwarfed by Android and iPhone, looks to be a dud
5. Ballmer sells $1.3 billion of Microsoft stock. Does he know something we don't?
6. Bad news for Windows Phone 7 launch --- big shortages may be ahead
7. For Microsoft to succeed, must Windows die?
...yeah
Don't get me wrong, I love'd my android device when I had it. However, I wanted to try something new, and was intrigued by the WP7 OS. I do believe it has a lot of room to grow, and I am not about to go along with everyone else and throw it out the window because Android/iOS can do something it cant. It's all about opening up and trying something new, and not dismissing it as soon as you turn it on, such in this guy's case.
android and "i" anything have become fad keyword/fad terms...ppl don't know what it is unless it has an "i" in front of it or android. But wp7 is still extremely new. give it time
what i don't get is why Apple and droid fans come on to Wp7 sites and articles just to leave hateful comments? They are really attempting to disuade ppl from trying it ,,,which is just retarded.
If you don't like it...fine...who cares. Why you do they have to leave negative comments on every article out there...Don't read the article if u don't care about it.
I think the high suck factor of WP7 has something to do with it.

I have an EVO that I love.
I also started evaluating a Samsung Focus(WP7).
It is really impressive, it is the perfect use case for my wife. E-mail/calendar/facebook some internet. It is one of the best devices for that type of use case. The battery life is awesome. My wife won't be haxoring her phone and be on XDA.

and if what you are saying that WP7 will fail because of those few small feature not included in the first launch then iOS and adnroid should not be around...
well I mean just like you're entitled to your opinion that WP7 is the greatest mobile OS ever, so are people entitled to the opinion that it leaves much to be desired.
I actually am somewhat excited about WP7. I like new things and a brand new mobile OS is no different, I'm sure I'll end up with a device at some point, just not willing to fork out top dollar for one right now.
You ever notice how when Android came out, the cool fad was to call anyone who didn't like it all that much an "Apple Fanboy"? and now that WP7 is out, people who don't think it's incredible are now "Android Fanboy" or "Apple Fanboy"
Just wait till some new mobile OS comes out that you personally don't care for and they'll all label you a "WP7 Fanboy"
Maybe you can address the actual faults with WP7 and admit that as smooth, efficient, and sleek as it is, there are some things that could have been improved on the device.
-copy paste - A friend with a WP7 phone couldn't even text me a phone number because there was no copy/paste feature on the phone.
- UI - Some of us hate those tiles and would like to possibly change the UI a little, wish it could be done. WP7 is just like iOS in this wise.
- closed - Of course developers can't do a damn thing with this phone other than make apps for it, kind of sad for XDA users considering what this site is about.
- bad for developers - You have to pay the stupid $100 just to be able to side-load developer apps on your phone? What kind of insanity is that?
When it comes down to it, how is this phone any different from an iPhone? Less apps, but bigger screens on more carriers, some with hardware keyboards. You have to grant that some people have legitimate concerns with the limitations of the OS.
orange...i don't know how in the world you can say the uI of wp7 is anything like the UI of ios, other than the fact that you use your finger to make selections?
the IOS puts a billion tiny squares on your screen at once. None of which do anything but sit there....WP7 at least makes them large enough to read, better contrast, and they're live...I bet no other iPhone user would say wp7 is like the IOS.
This is falacy that he been existing ever since the iphone came out. That any other phone that has a touch screen is trying to be like the iphone. Bullsh!t

I'm not trying to bash the phone with that statement, what I meant was that it was unchangeable like iOS.
I do very much prefer Metro or iOS UI, but it's like iOS in that it cannot be changed.
If you like it, then the fact that it cannot be changed should not matter.
You seem to think you speak for everyone. You can only speak for yourself.
Other people are more than capable of making their own choices, unless they're like 7 years old or something.

I hated those iPhone icons and Android(iphone like) icons. I was hating icons that was using on WM6.5.x, etc. I am so glad MS didn't follow that ugly icons path and came up with live tiles.
I have Samsung Focus and loving it! Looking forward for the update in Jan. Rock on MS! you did your homework and I am impressed.
The sooner I get Mango the closer I am to knowing whether to dump this phone OS and "move" back to 6.5 with my HD2 or screw it all together and jump on the iPhone 5 bandwagon. My Focus already feels old next to my HD2 and I've only had it for 10 months. Apple and oranges I know.

...that's not really a reason. Aside from "well I hate the popular brand".
To the OP: give some more info on what you're looking for. And how on -EARTH- could you ever even begin to think of going back to 6.5??? Ugly, slow, laggy, freezy, ugly. Yes it was functional (sorta - most programs locked up or just wouldn't work), but man. It loses to every other OS in every single category. My LG dumbphone from 2007 was easier to use than my Omnia II.
Not sure why you'd jump to an iPhone if WP doesn't do it for you feature wise. If you truly need WM type OS, Android is your daddy.
To me, the UI & integration in WP blows the iPhone (and all the others) out of the water. Its all whether you are a 'power' user or not. WP won't have that many features until Apollo most likely.
Why is the decision for you so hard to make. You already know what Mango has to offer. So why are you coming to us crying about WP7. Sounds like your mind is already made up on getting an iphone, so go get it and quit *****in

I'm considering getting a new blackberry personally. I pretty Mich gave up 6 months ago the state of this Os at release basically forced me to use android for 10th months longer than I thought I'd have to.... So Mich that the wp7 device is hard for me to remember I own it now...

Well hopefully your new blackberry will meet all your requirments, good luck!
Until RIM pull out of the market and leave you with nothing, at least MS are committed to WP. If you buy a BB you may as well go and buy a palm os as I feel the writing is on the wall for them

Man, don't hold him back. The sooner he gets his new device and finally ditches his WP7, the sooner he - hopefully - vanishes from these parts of the forums.
Nah. I'll never leave this forum. You guys are too fun!
EDIT To Add: It serves me no logical purpose just to leave because I got rid of a phone becaue I go through multiple smartphones a year and I'm quite platform agnostic, so I never know when I'll get another one. It serves my best interest to be on the up and up with all the info as well as still give my feedback and suggestions IRT the platform - or any platform I've used and feel there is a chance I may use again in the future.
But you're free to continue trolling me! I'm not so quick to bite these days, unfortunately :<
If you know my history, which dates back to my using windows mobile since the early 2000's, you'd know I'm not trolling. I just find it interesting/lame, when you say something negative and people here pounce on you! You certainly wouldn't want anyone dissenting! Perhaps it's a reflection of the average age here...ah, forget it.
Been using Skype on Windows Mobile for a long time and despite the fact that MS now owns Skype, I see no evidence of it being included in this release. Brutal! They purchased Skype in May!
It's a phone and I got to press multiple buttons to make a f***ing phone call, but just two to take a picture! Lame.
****ty audio/audiobook player.
****ty video player.
No direct access to my microSD.
No smart dailer.
I've got an Onkyo NR 509 and guess what, the app for it is available for iPad/touch/phone.
Cartoonish tiles.
Speedn has stated the issues lacking and I agree with him for the most part, but go ahead and dump on someone who doesn't agree with you, or better yet, show your lack of maturity and call him names.

Everyone has their preferences and priorities. It is unfair to call out someone just because our preferences don't match. Personally I have used Symbian, WinMo 6.5, Android, and now I am using WP7. I can see where OP is coming from as I too, sometimes, miss some of the WM6.5 features. But the reliability and polish of WP7 has changed my perception. I do not have to reset my phone (hard or soft) once every few days anymore and features, although limited, just work. I used to call out Iphone users when I was with WM6.5 or Android. But after using WP7 I don't anymore. Reason: Phone needs a polished UI and reliability (OS wise, I am not discussing at&t issues). WP7 and iOS (and WebOS) are the only ones that do it right.
To summarize, OP... go ahead and try all the options. mobile OS is way more dynamic, it is our loss if we don't take advantage of it and try them all... and in case, like me, you realize WP7 is the way to go.. you are welcome back!

Turned 30 this year tyvm.
Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
And fyi: the age of the average gamer is 35 (^)
You sound like a parent in the 70's when you say things like that.
The point is that this is another one of those "everything about wp7 is crap" posts. It is unhelpful because it is vanishingly unlikely that Microsoft will do an about turn and make WP7 like WM6.5 or (God forbid) like android. I think it is great when people post useful suggestions for WP7 (particularly when they also post them on MS boards) or when people come up with stuff that helps us get the best out of our phones, but I have had it with the WP7 is crap stuff, IF YOU DONT LIKE IT GET A DIFFERENT PHONE AND LET THOSE WHO ARE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT IT TALK ABOUT IT IN PEACE.
Have a nice day y'all........

Google doesn't bow down. Android is open...simple answer, I know.
They are free to do whatever the hell they want. The only time Google is even allowed to have a say is when it comes to Google Apps. Sure, they could tighten restrictions on what it takes to be qualified to get Google Apps, but, that's starting to looked like a less open and more closed garden...if you will.
Google isn't Jesus, by any stretch...but, in the modern IT/OS/API/Platform/etc/etc/etc world they are by far the most open and agreeable of all the big players. This is one of the unfortunate side effects....or fortunate depending on how you look at it. They allow a manufacturer/reseller to make the OS "their own", encouraging them to release Android devices. That's good....however they also allow a manufacturer/reseller to make the OS "their own", encouraging "fragmentation" and update issues.
I prefer it to the alternative. An authoritarian leadership model that dictates what can and can't be.
...and remember, these manufacturers/resellers are TOTALLY FREE to put out whatever the hell they--or YOU--want.....but if it doesn't meet Google's very livable requirements it doesn't qualify for Google Apps.

Very true we are spoiled because of this and other forums bring us together but the hacking community is very small we are the 1% I have talked 10 of my friends to trade in their iPhones for android devices and now I handle everything for their phones. 3 have started to pick up on things but the others are lost and just suggest colors for things I get to it when I can and try to keep them up to date lol but yea point made I hope.

No because Google borked Ics since launch. Could of had more devices and advertising pure Google. They had plenty of great ads in YouTube never saw them on TV. Then letting Verizon having it exclusive was a real good move.
Can you think of any other software that comes out and doesn't get used for months or even a year. What is really the point of the update if nobody gets it. If you think Google handled this well something is wrong with you.

Because one of the things that makes android better is the sheer amount of different devices manufacturers out there that causes lots of delays. Apple only worries about 5 different devices while Google has hundreds

if all the android device makers would just use what Google gives them, ICS would be everywhere. But they all need to add their own overlays like Sense, touchwiz, etc. That's what causes the delays, most times. look at all the Chinese tablets out since January with vanilla ICS, other manufacturers could do the same.
Not to mention crap like trying to code for the 3D camera on the EVO3D. That is apparently a ***** to do.

Why would it make you sad?
ICS isn't a living being that should be mourned when forgotten.
Jelly Bean is going to be better than ICS, otherwise why would you call it an upgrade?
Tech moves fast. The manufacturers take their time and put their overlays on their devices to give them a different feel so when someone purchases one, they don't feel like they have the same device as everyone else.

Google doesn't 'bow down' to manufacturers. Android doesn't belong to google, it belongs to the open handset alliance. It's merely backed by google since they are a leading member of the open handset alliance.
They don't bow down to them, if they did; why would there be requirements for a device to be able to be pre installed with Google's apps?
Do they need them? Well, Without manufacturers, you can't make a device.
I like android because of the choice I have in devices, Not like Apple where you get two deviecs.
iPhone or iPad?
I'd rather it be like this than like iOS is.
I'm not an expert on this but I have heard the main complication with getting ICS to the masses has been the massive changes between the GB standard and ICS. For phones they skipped an entire version of code enhancements that were not made available to them; drivers and other pieces of the standard kernel were modified but only tested on the Nexus devices.
So the manufacturer has to take the new kernel, add their modifications back in, make sure they play nice (which doesn't happen even in the desktop world - Windows anyone?) and then start plugging away at each issue until they get to a stable build. Rinse and repeat when it gets to the carrier. You're talking a LOT of hours to get that far and it doesn't come cheap - we haven't even talked about the cost of test devices.
So considering it took roughly 6 months to get a stable build to end users on a non-Nexus device - folks, from my POV we're honestly spoiled.

Spot on!
I have at least a dozen friends on android phones, and I doubt one of them could tell you what version their phone is running.
Heck, even in my IT/Telecom shop, I doubt more than one or two people could tell what version of Android they are on.
Outside of the modding community, most people not only simply don't know, when brought to their attention, they just don't care.
THEM: Does my Facebook work? Can I send pics and texts. Can I play Draw Something and Angry Birds.
Me: Yes.
Them:Then what does this version you keep asking me about matter...
<rolls eyes>
I think, because we are in the hacking / development world, we look at the next best thing from source as an upgrade. We are aware of what is about to come out from source, etc, but to the rest of the population, they arent keeping tabs on Google, or even the carrier probably. We know ICS is there, so that is the upgrade to us. The rest of the people see an "Upgrade available" on their phone, so that is their upgrade. We get our upgrade when google releases it, they get theirs when the carrier releases it.
My coworker is very loyal to Android but she was not aware of the naming system. She was even more excited because she likes all the desserts they've used.

Sold my Nexus a day before yesterday for PKR 33,000 (about $340, yes they are expensive in Pakistan). Now waiting for the next Nexus to launch and then I'll upgrade. Meanwhile rocking an old Nokia dumb phone.
Once a Nexus, always a Nexus. All thanks to the awesome devs here.
I've just moved on from my Nexus to an iPhone 5. Best decision of my life!
I love the way I have to use iTunes to move music/videos etc to my phone. And better yet, the range of expensive products you can buy with a special lightning connector (with a name like that it must be fast!) is way better than micro USB.
I recommend this phone to everyone with a crappy Nexus.

I know what you mean! It has five rows, that is a game changer. The screen is just big enough now for Apple to display all my favorite ads while i browse through my apps and play games. And the maps are so much better now that they got rid of Google. And since Apple also removed the YouTube app and is doing their best to block all forms of YouTube over DLNA, I don't have to worry about watching YouTube videos on the tv. Because why would I want to watch cat videos on a big screen when I've got four inches of the new mother f*cking iPhone in my hand!
I'm not moving on from the Gnex anytime soon. The LGnex is meh imo.
I thought the best feature of iPhone 5 was the capability to set your own mp3's as personal alarms and ringtones. Welcome to 200late apple.

The incredible has this thread.. named different but still the same idea. It let's users know where the devs "if they stop by" are when they decide to move on. Some users get attached to the devs and would like to follow their work.
Other can give good reviews on other phones etc.

Wouldn't users who are attached / fans of a certain dev send them a pm or twitter/Google + or something. Usually a dev also let's people know the deal in their threads from the older device.
I don't see how a person can be attached so to a dev (s) but yet still not have a clue what they are doing.
lol at trolls. I'm not leaving the gnex anytime soon. I love it. I actually scored another gnex on the cheap to keep as a backup.

Chill dude, he was making a joke. I saw nothing insecure in this thread until your post. Heck, nobody made any negative remarks until your post.
Also, how is Android a legacy OS? Are you the same person that thought it was legacy because of Java and wanting to move to BB10 because of that? Dalvik VM has little relation with the J2ME used by "legacy" phones (feature/dumb phones).

No, I am not. Thanks for assuming though. Whether you like it or not, Native development is better. Android relying so heavily on any virtualization (Dalvik) makes it a legacy OS. I am not misinformed -_-
