Google+ makes the phone oh so laggy - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just updated Google + and the app is full of eye, looks awesome, too bad no one is really using it, the thing is now the scrolling, lags and stutters :/ maybe the update is not really optimized or maybe its the galaxy nexus gpu that can't handle it

Why are all Galaxy Nexus owners complaining about lag?
It looks like every time you guys find a game/app where the FPS drops below 50 fps you guys start nagging.
I owned a HTC Wildfire before, that device lags. A lot. Now I own the Nexus, everything is running smooth.
Yes, I actually see that the FPS drops below the 50 fps for 1 sec once in a while. I don't give a **** about that. You're supposed to READ all/most of the posts in your stream, not to try to scroll as fast as possible to find some lag.
The scroll animation only is useful if you scroll slowly, because you can't read the posts when you scroll to fast. Like I said, the Google+ app is for READING those posts, not for flying though the list.
You guys should enjoy your awesome Galaxy Nexus, and stop complaining about minor issues.

Smooth here too.

No problems here either. It's been running pretty smoothly since I did the update.

Scrolling down is smooth. Scrolling up stutters.

Smooth here too. Loving the new interface.

An update was just pushed to the market. Try that. Mine is smooth.

Mine lags as well. That said. I had to replace my first GooglePlay purchased Galaxy Nexus because half the screen was purple tinted. My first one never lagged at all. My replacement did right out the box and updated. So I did a factory data reset as a I figured it might have been a bad install. Still did it, so once more another factory data reset. Same issue persisted. So I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the factory images from Google via fastboot, still I have the same problem.
Other then the stuttering and lag from time to time its fine (the whole OS in general not just the new Google+ UI overhaul). I'm planning on calling the Play Store again to try and exchange my phone again. I actually think there is something wrong with it but I cannot be sure. Otherwise this is an amazing phone and I never complain about it. After having my Nexus S receive a corrupted efs with the factory 2.3.4 update which rendered the cellular service pretty much useless I can't complain really.

Yeah, I complained about the no-4g thing in my official review of the game, but still!
About the force closing thing (for me it's about every 15 min over 3g)...it's NOT the same time duration when I play over wifi...then it either doesn't fc at all, or if it does, it's usually after much longer of play. What I *think* happens is that the signal drops for a second and that forces the game to fc (why not just lag a bit, I don't know...). But if you look at your signal after a fc, it will generally be 1x (i.e., not 3g), so I think it has something to do with that.
Can anyone confirm they get the fc and they consistently have good signal when it happens??

+1 on this -- it is just a game crash generally, although it has fc'ed on me twice. There's a bunch of threads on games crashing on our devices (not specific to order and chaos...), and hopefully it's being looked into by samsung/sprint. If you have any info on your phone crashing the game, please report it so a solution is more forthcoming. Thanks!
So this game crashes often on the Epic Touch? Just curious, I might give it a try. It most likely drains the battery pretty quick though hmm, expected of course.

How long for apps?

Hi guys, excellent forum. Have always browsed since dropping my iPhone 4 for a s2, and have now got a nexus too.
I was wondering when and how long it usually takes for problems with apps and the new os to be ironed out. Having so many problems with apps not running properly, and bits from apps missing. Would be nice to get the phone working smoothly like my S2.
Just to add while I'm here, is speed dial actually likely to be added in future?
Cheers guys, I will post when I can, but ain't clued up like most of you!

Noticed your using Tapatalk which doesn't work on my Nexus... Uhmmm :|
How does that work? Are all the nexus out there using different software versions or something?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Apps are fixed by individual developers. The OS is updated by Google.
How quickly a Market app is updated is really dependent on how important that dev thinks pleasing the iCS crowd is. Google will surely update the OS asap considering they have this volume issue to fix.
As far as adding speed dial... I wouldn't hold my breath.
There may not be speed dial but i use direct dial (in the widgets) then just drop them onto the phone icon to make a folder. works almost the same as speed dial (a quicker way in my opinion)

problem with playing gameloft games

Hi,
Today I decided to try Gameloft games on my Galaxy Nexus, I downloaded two games("brothers in arms 2" an "Gangstar West Coast Hustle" ) and installed them easily and downloaded the data files with WiFi. After it finished downloading I went to the game to play, but after a while this error came up: "unfortunately, BIA2(gangstar) has stopped [ok]" and it jump out of the game! Try them for times and it occurred every time. After trying it for many times I found that when I use multi touch the error comes up!
please help, its really annoying. I don't know what to do!
I did nothing to my phone(it's not rooted or any thing), I just updated it to jelly bean.
Sorry for bad English and thanks in advance.

You're custom ROMs and kernels change too damn much. Hate to say it but, Google and Samsung know better about what the hardware should be set at, and how to write good software (Google for the software, not Samsung) than at home, part time, I'm gonna dabble in this type developers. No offense intended, but Samsung and Google do this for a living, and have been doing it a long time, and have many very, very, very knowledgeable, schooled, and trained people.
I run a stock ROM built by someone here, but completely based off of Google's source. I can play Gameloft games all day long with no issues, as well as do anything and everything else without ever having an issue.
This phone doesn't need its CPU over clocked, or its GPU, or under volt, or any of that. You think your "pushing performance" when all you're really doing is sacrificing stability.
There's a reason Google doesn't go bleeding edge with any Nexus devices. They know their **** and know it well.

Lags

Hey. After I flash a new rom, the phone is super quick and respones very well. Buy after a few days, it starts to get laggy. When I am presaing the soft keys it takes a couple of seconds to respond, apps loading times can reach about 20 seconds, contacts loading too. I am using the GSM Gnex with CNA 3.8 rom and franco kernel r298. The lags occurred with XenonHD too. Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining about the developers, I am just trying to figure out if I am doing something wrong.

I remember someone saying it has to do with the zram optimizations in roms and kernels. at first it makes things faster and the the idea implemented is good in theory but over time it makes things unbearably slow. i dont know the technical reasons for this, someone with more knowledge than me may be able to explain it.

Obviously downloading from the Play Store is using system resources (RAM, a % of the processor etc.) so a slow down is to be expected.
The phone restarting itself =/= to rebooting it regularly. Just like your computer you shouldn't leave it running 24/7. Sometimes you just need to give your phone a restart.
I think the lags are related to the heatcof the Gnex. Maybe the my cheap case makes it worse. I will check without case so it have more contact with the air. I will report the results.

Yup u are right. Many people used to tell that Franco kernel is the best and stuff but even that after using for a few days gets slow whereas in stock all that crap doesn't happen. I still use Franco because games work smoother on it compared to stock. Even the battery life is inconsistent. Just try stock after weeks and Franco right after a reboot still stock will be overall faster and smoother.

How to get the butter back:
1) Download the last stable 4.1.2 rom of your choice
2) Do a factory reset with TWRP
3) Wipe the buggy 4.2.1 rom using TWRP
4) Flash 4.1.2 back in.
5) Enjoy butter while waiting for 4.2.2 or later builds which is probably coming in January due to the holidays.

Or just flash the official 4.2.1. I run stock, rooted and have no problems. I tried a few roms based of 4.2.1 and they were slow and laggy.
This reminds me of the "zero shutter lag" feature that was removed from the Gnex, or selling a 8GB device just to say it "starts at $299." It's just something fancy for them to advertise and get some hype/sales, then they remove it. This is standard procedure by now, right?
Butter is not gone, 4.2 is definitely smoother than ICS and on par with 4.1 and it seems to have much less stutter than 4.1 did

Noone can tell you exactly what, but the general trend is, that the OTA caused various problems for some, so when some people don't have problems on the same SW, the problem can only be located to something stored on the data partition because of the update process compared to a full wipe.
So the answer is simple, you do a full wipe and install the factory image of 4.2(.1) directly. If this doesn't solve it, it isn't a software problem...
And yes my phone is no less fluid than it was on 4.1, Í, however, updated as descriped with a clean install.

1. No that is a general misconception, what was really the case, was a regular code error(zero-index error), making the last row in the array holding the months being skipped. You can't blame them for not spotting this small error in the very limited testing they can do in house. I for one have never used that particular feature and didn't know you could add birthdays until this was discovered. What really matters is that it was fixed within weeks.
2. How? Everything seems to be branded as play store quite fine, whether you like the name or not shouldn't matter
3. why wouldn't they promote the chrome brand and make it easier for users to sync everything between their desktop and phone?
In a direct comparison,i still think 4.1.2 is a bit more fluid overall (app drawer for example, let alone recent apps list). That together with all the other stuff going on (screen switches on,blutooth, worse battery - for me at least) led me to go back and stay to 4.1.2. Not a single problem and constant ~4h on screen time. I can easily wait for a bugfix update next year.
