Roaming with free WiFi services I often wish I'd could use at least a free VPN service like Hotspot Shield (HS) which I use on my notebook PC. But alas HS only offers settings for the iPhone. Any suggestions on how we could get these settings to work on our beloved HD? http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/
Of course WM's built-in VPN client would be the first choice, but so far I had not luck getting a connection over WiFi. Currently testing the German NCP-E VPN multi-server WM client, but again no luck connecting with HS.
Just realised that I dont really need to use the PDAnet application on my Desire or on my pc to tether internet using usb, I'm not sure about other network branded desires but I know that a T-mobile representative posted on the forums that Tethering is allowed on T-mobile as long as you stay within the 3GB fair use policy - Decent =D
All you have to do is select Internet Sharing when you connect your phone up, you'll have to wait a while for the computer to install it as a network adapter. This internet sharing option might not be on other branded phones.

update: its a bit jumpy I think, first time trying it.
Very true, but if you refering to the new 2.2 update allowing it,
the new update will allow for wireless , atm you can only
do it through having the phone connected through cabling.
This is what i think anyway.
Even thought internet sharing is available on most Desires (as it was on the Hero), there is still a use for PDANet.
PDANet allows you to share the internet via a Bluetooth DUN connection.
Regards,
Dave
PDANet will have to be my choice as I'm running Windows 7 which doesn't play nicely with the standard USB tethering!!
i've been using pdanet as you need htc sync installed, and theres not htc sync for mac :/
I have 2 old PIX firewalls I can use, or I could could use OpenVPN inside WRT, or anything. I have nothing setup yet.
What's the easiest VPN for the EVO to hook to?
I'm running unrooted 2.2.
There is no PIX or OpenVPN support in Android. If you root and download "VPN Connections" you can connect to a PIX or OpenVPN server. I have connected to each. Make sure to read through the bug reports. The version I was using had a routing problem that had to be corrected in vpnc-script.
I've managed to get my evo to connect a winxp pro box set up as a pptp vpn server. but only if I disable encryption on the evo. which kind of defeats the purpose.
Basically, android VPN support is spotty at best. There is an epically long google code thread on the subject.
For the time being setting up an ssh server and using connectbot seems to the best way to securely access remote networks. It's far from perfect but it's the best solution I've seen.
Some people have reported vpn success using custom roms. But they are the exception. And setting up an ssh server is probably easier than tweaking a custom rom, IMHO.
This conversation is over my head, but Logmein Ignition owns my soul.
Thanks everyone.
I might have to root my EVO again(last one was rooted, but had to get a new EVO through warantee)
Hey whatsup guys, I've been trying to deal with this issue since I bought my Nexus 7.
I bought it second hand and the moment I received it and tried to bluetooth tether it to my HTC One M7, the option to check "Use for internet access" just says connecting for half a second and then unchecks...
At first I thought maybe it was software issue (It was stock), so then I flashed CM and PA with the same results. The funny thing is that the bluetooth keyboard works perfectly and sending files also work. It just can't receive files from other phones and bluetooth tether. Could the bluetooth module be broken?
ahh bluetooth!

Okay so i am guessing that the HTC One M7 is the one that is giving your tablet the internet access and your Nexus 7 would be the one sharing the internet access?
Well there is a couple of things we can do...
First off does your wireless provider support native bluetooth tethering? Is there an option on your phone that says "bluetooth tethering". If your wireless provider does not support bluetooth tethering then you are going to have to use 3rd-party apps.
I would suggest you look into "easy tether" from the google play store.
You would need to download Easy Tether Lite from the play store on your phone (if your phone is the one providing internet access)
Then you would need to download "easy tether tablet" from the play store and put it on your tablet. Setup easy tether lite on your phone to use bluetooth tethering and then setup easy tether tablet on your nexus tablet to use your phones internet via bluetooth.
When a connection is made you should have internet access...try a web browser to make sure.
However, some internet access will be blocked on easy tether lite, so if you actually can get easy tether to give you internet access i would recommend you purchase easy tether pro which will unblock any internet access restrictions.
Also, why are you interested in bluetooth tethering? A wifi hotspot would be much better and faster! Bluetooth tethering is much much slower so any internet browsing or downloading from the device sharing the internet connection will be much much slower than you are used to.
If your wireless provider does not allow or support hotspots then you can always use apps like "Foxfi" or "PdaNet" to turn your phone into a wifi hotspot.
I hope this has been helpful...let me know how it worked for you.

"Connect to the network" error while trying to unlock (and on chinese vpn server)
I've browsed more than a few threads on here where the reply for issues regarding unlocking is to use PlexVPN's Shanghai server. Unfortunately I've connected to that server and I'm still getting a "Connect to the network and try again" error when trying to unlock my device.
I've tried more than 10 different VPNs, different servers, etc. I have everything signed up logged in and my message for unlock authorization.
What's going on? I really want to kill these Mi Store ads.

You need to keep trying different ones, eventually it will work. Plex one didn't work for me either.
You also don't need to specifically connect to a Shanghai one, a China one in general will work.
