[Q] Pure Google ICS without Touchwiz? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I know there is one thread labeled it is the only official ICS thread, but I have a slightly different question...
My vibrant broke, and there was literally a ton of ICS roms for Vibrant... now with the Galaxy S2 I see plenty of ICS roms, but they all seem to have some kind of touchwiz basis... I hate touchwiz with a passion. I love the way google sets the phone up like on the Nexus...
Are there any roms that are just lightweight pure and simple ICS roms for the SII?
I'd love any responces and i'm not trying to troll i've searched a bit with no results.
Thank you anyone.

Also i know about the APEX launcher I was just wondering if there is something more direct.

CM9 and AOKP will both give you a pretty stock or more than stock experience.
Miui is a whole different ball game but not touchwiz

The cm or aokp roms, but they aren't fully functional.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

Slightly off topic but why get SII when you can get the nexus? Sounds like you would love that phone more... and cheaper too.
Anyways, AKOP/CM9 is probably your best bet when dev gets really rolling on it with an official source release.

Because 4g.

Waiting for source.

This. Ppl that have had the s2 since long before you are also sick of touchwiz but there is nothing the devs can do to remove it completely till we get source

Questions go in the Q&A section

Coming from the Vibrant I had a pure google ICS rom and it was fully functional...
CM9/AOKP which would you guys pick. CM9 still in the alpha stages and really buggy? I would just like something stable..

ICS vs Gingerbread

For me is not a big deal about ICS but for some it is....here is a comparison I found on YouTube. If I r on the xda app and it doesn't open click on, open in browser.

But if we are talking Motoblur, Sense and TouchWizz....yah Ill take the wizz.
Personally, I think the "official" ICS (LPQ) for the SGS2 seems more like an alpha build than a final product. CM9 nightly version for the i9100 feels more stable than Samsung's LPQ release.
I think I'd just stick with Gingerbread, rather than upgrade to Samsung's ICS builds.
obviously ICS is better the look the feel the speed
Its like saying Tupac vs Sojiua boy
Yes... Another ICS thread!
Much like most of us, I've gotten fed up with the ICS thread phenomenon..
However, I wanted to post this thread for the veterans and Devs.
Of course those of us in the know have been watching the activity escalate in the online feeds, and I have to say it's exciting to see the ramping up of releases and leaks..
We are at the threshold of real ICS goodness. I for one have been watching Kevin's Nova Launcher, since I am not a big fan of TouchWiz. Don't get me wrong, Samsung is impressive at coding.. it's functional and beautiful but too too slow and not enough customization for us hardcore themers.. With a few custom apps I see a gorgeous, lightning fast, better than Vanilla ICS experience coming.
Thoughts?

My thoughts: I don't get the big deal over ICS Now, people running WP7 on the other hand...I can see why they get jacked about OS updates - WP7 sucks exponentially less with each one
I can understand people not liking TouchWiz because of the lack of customization and other reasons but not for being too slow. When I first got my S2 I thought it was blazing fast. OP you really think TouchWiz is too slow?

I get where you are headed and with a 4.0 build and a few custom aosp apps we can easily have a pretty vanilla rom

I need to get an answer, which I've been combing through the forums and the internet. I've heard through a very reputable source that Samsung coded Touchwiz so deep it utilizes the on chip GPU verses all the other launchers uses up precious phone resources. Touchwiz was "made" for the hardware of this phone.
Can someone please verify this.

death to TW!!! HAHA
Tw isn't even that bad lol, our phones are fast enough that it doesn't matter
i think its more the UI that most people don't like. ICS is so much prettier and smoother. for me, give me AOSP and I'll decide how I want my phone to look.
But the biggest reason I don't like TW or Sense or any of those custom UI's is cuz it just delays OS updates that much more cuz of that crap. When the AOSP version does everything the Custom ones do....what do I need the custom one for?

POSSIBLE ICS Rom...want everyones take!

Ok I have been a major lurker on xda for a while. I just created an xda profile a few days ago and made my first contribution with a hacked hulu plus app. Now I want to make a bigger contribution. In the form of a ROM. Ive got my build environment up and running smooth.
Now I dont want any donations. You wont find any donations links any where. I hack and build for fun. This community has many taliented developers. I just hope to merge what I know into real world stuff.
Now my question to the community is what do you want to see in a Rom? Features? Tweaks?

Same. It's very smooth and I like it a lot. Lmk when you get an ICS TW ROM with good battery life like EL29.
Just a fully functional ICS Stock rom that plays nice with the battery is all I can really ask for
You developers spend enormous amount of time and effort to provide to this community and it'll be absurd for people to "expect" ANYTHING. Thank you in advance for any future work you provide for the community.
Settings like AOKP with status bar changes and lockscreen changes and a theme engine would be sweet also.

As long as it's a TW Rom that would be awesome. I like TW and there's a **** ton of people that add launchers to their roms, might as well get CM or AOKP.
Again TW and fast would be nice to see. I have had bad luck with ICS, my phone always hangs for some reason on all leaks.
Thanks in advance.
an aosp ics rom with every single customization option imported from aokp, codename, gummy, slim, and cm9. if you can get that with flawless mms, camera/camcorder, great battery life, with no service or data loss, and properly working sdcard, then you'll have yourself the best aosp rom available hands down.
This may be asking a lot, but i would love to see some of the tweaks for this ROM added. It may be kernel tweaks so i dont know if it is possible. My Mother's phone is running it and after 2 days she still has 50% battery.

Honestly, would just like to see what you come up with. It can be TW based, aokp, cm9.... either way, there is going to be someone not pleased with your work. I think you should just pick and choose what you like, put it together, and the community will love you for it. I myself do prefer a nice lock screen mod (like maddoggin and the new aosp mod). The launcher I could give two s#*T's about, as long as it runs smooth. The best of luck to you. Hope to see some good things in the future.

A touch wiz ROM with mods like AOKP (status bar notification and lockscreen mods ) and behaves like AOKP, the reason behind it being a touchwiz ROM is because the little touchwiz touches are nice( video player, working led, HW accelerated UI and browser and etc) ,putting other UI's might just cause problems (battery and lag). Yet I can only dream!! Just an idea. If this is even possible.
A RodericSent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Stock touch wiz ICS ROM themed the look like ICS and fix that darn notification bug.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
My opinion is to offer options.
Help swamp goblin port sense 4.0.
Help maintain and update MIUI if needed.
Port over motoblur (just so peeps can try it)
Help tcp if needed with aokp or cma or gummy.
Etc. Etc. The more options we have, the happier everyone will be.
While not a rom, how about porting the cm9 reloaded mod to our phone. The systemUI of the mod needs to be merged with ours to get the 4g toggle and other stuff working. I would do it, but time isn't something I have at the moment.

Where to start???

Hey, everyone! So, long story short, I pretty much jacked up my OG Droid Incredible a couple of weeks ago and was force to pick up a new device. I went with a Verizon Galaxy Nexus, basically because the dev support is huge. The only problem with it is, the dev community is almost too huge! I've been scoping out the development section and it has my head spinning as there's just so much to choose from! Anyone have some recommendations for a nice stable Jellybean ROM and kernel to flash to get started with? And what does everyone use for recovery? I wasn't anticipating getting a new device this quickly so I haven't really had any time to research and sift through all of these threads. Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to being a part of this amazing community! Thanks everyone!
Sent from my Droid Incredible using xda app-developers app
personally I always go with CM, and they did just start nightlies with CM10 (jellybean), kernels I just stick to what came with the rom, which is of course a CM kernel, and recovery, well you guessed it TWRP also brought to us by the CM team. There are many devs out there offering many great roms, but no matter what I always find myself going straight back to true CM roms, not CM based roms.

Man, we haven't had any official CM ROMs for the Dinc since Gingerbread. Everything ICS, and now JB, has been CM-based. I've never really been huge on MIUI but I'm willing to give anything a shot! There's just so much going on over here, I'm a bit overwhelmed!

BAMF Paradigm has been rock solid for me. It's close to stock with a handful of customizations. I'd say it's "just right"!
Is there any sort of Touchwiz theme or add-on that works with any of these JB ROMs? I know most people can't stand Touchwiz but I ran a CM9-based Touchwiz ROM on my Dinc for a while and absolutely loved it!

I guess you can search for themes that are compatible with CM10 theme chooser, but I don't think there's any Touchwiz ROMs. Also Touchwiz itself is not yet Jelly Bean, so it's gonna be pretty hard.
Welcome buddy! Glad to see your aboard the nexus train lol
As for ROMs.. this will depend on you specifically as I enjoy customization I went with -
JbSourcery and CNA, both stable and Jelly Bean.
Allow a huge variation of Customization, Miui was great with Gingerbread but since ICS it went to hell.
Kernels will vary depending on the ROM. Stock usually seems to be best.

Haha, indeed. Even started a sound quality thread.
The nexus sound quality isn't the greatest and at best can make it sound like the DInc.

Personally I use TWRP recovery as it is very nice. I used the goo manager app in market to install it. Other than that I have tried many ROMs and all of them have been great but am now using paranoidandroid and probably will be from now on. It has things totally different than any other ROM and is really cool. With that I use the trinity kernel cause it performs well and I really like the colors. Also there is a touchwiz mod in the mods section that looks to be very complete. Look in there if interested to see what Ron they recommend on it.

overwhelmed with JB options

I've had my sprint gnex for about a week now. maybe two weeks, I forget. Anyway, 4.0.4 ICS is mind-blowing compared to 2.3.5 that I had on my rooted S-on Evo 4g (I did de-bloat the stock rom). The fact that it's not a Sense or TouchWiz rom is the best part of all, and really I find that I have no desired functionality that would require rooting or flashing of any kind. However... a lot of the additions in JB look really awesome and I'd like to check into those at some point in the near future. I'm comfortable with the idea of rooting and flashing. After I rooted my Evo I may have actually laughed out loud for being as paranoid and anxious as I was.
Here's my concern: after trudging through the sprint gnex dev forum, there's a lot of roms and kernels available. At this point I'm not so concerned with a kernel, but I'd like some help narrowing down the options to one or maybe two roms to get started with. Basically I'm looking for one that's as close to what Google would give me if they were releasing to sprint devices. I would also be cool with one that's as close to what sprint might release in an official OTA.
I was never crazy about trying CM roms (or other AOSP based ones for that matter) on the Evo just because I wasn't crazy about having to flash back and forth between stock roms for PRLs and profiles. I'm not sure how often that would really have to be done, but I won't consider that a deal breaker if it gets me into an ideal rom.

I prefer AOKP to CM, but the last few AOKP builds have been horrible on battery and in terms of someone wanting a custom experience and not really knowing what they want, I point them to CM.
paranoidandroid is just cm10 with more options lol
I'm trying to be a good forum member and search out my own answers before posting them, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding much info about CM10 from their own website. First of all, they don't have a subforum for the samsung gnex at all (just the google variant), and most of what I have skimmed across on the forums seems to be related to either CM 7 or 9. Should I be looking in the Google Galaxy Nexus CDMA forum over there? Do we have much here on xda for CM10 aside from a dev thread?
Still need to look at paranoidandroid, I'm not opposed to a few extra options on top of what CM10 has already
Edit:
Paranoid looks like awesome, like the ability to use the tablet UI, but I think I'll wait for that one to mature a little more since I'm just getting started with roms!
I'm also gonna have to say mmuzzy's stock AOSP ROM. It's what we would have had from Google if we had AOSP support, IMO.

New to Samsung

Greetings fellow S2 users. I hope I'm not too late to the party and that this phone still receives much love. I come from the OG Evo 4g side of the forums and after 2 years on sprint, I decided to high tail it to something moderately priced, more current hardware wise, and a plan that is more affordable.
And now with the release of the new OFFICIAL JB update from good 'ol Samsung, will there be any TW kernels or only AOSP? On the Evo, Sense was terrible and slow as all hell, but after playing with TW for a while I've actually become quite fond of the layout compared to AOSP. I will eventually make the switch to AOSP, but for now am LOVING the features of TW. The Music Square is nice for mood based music, I like that the video player plays pirated movies without the need for codecs/apps, WIFI calling is great and works flawlessly, and free visual voicemail without the need for Google Voice. And lets not forget free Hotspots.
Sad to see that Facial unlocking is now gone with the new JB update, and there are no music controls on lockscreen for default music app, but those are minor flaws. Would like to see S-Voice but IDK if it's a GSIII thing or not so not too bent out of shape.
So without much further ado, I am here to ask did I make a mistake picking the SGSII, and what I should know about ROM and Kernel wise compared to the OG Evo 4G. In other words, I assume that instead of Sense, it's now boiled down to TW (touchwiz) and AOSP based roms? Furthermore, is SBC still a thing; As in trickle charging? And are there any other news/tricks I should know about?
I would try out the PAC man ROM to be honest a lil bit of everything besides touchwiz i was a flashaholic but as soon as i started using PAC man ROM i havnt been able to find another ROM that suits me i love it and all the customizing options

In order of rom purity:
1. Try touchwiz either stock or ptmr3's new builds.
2. Cm10.1 official by team chopsticks
3. Aokp official by whitehawkx
4. Pac
5. Else
PTMR3 is currently working on a custom 4.1.2 tw kernel from source. so in a day or 3 we will have a jb tw kernel:good:
and if you want to try a great aosp rom jelly bam is where its at but you wont find it on xda its on goo.im under devs - jelly bam - tmobile galaxy s2. i recommend it with cerux kernel. also you can use roms from the skyrocket also so check out that thread too.

I played with it for a small time, but was saddened by the fact I couldn't get WIFI calling on anything but TWIZ.It's the main reason I went to TMO because I get poor reception in my house. Although while on the rom, I noticed I had more bars than I did on default JB Twiz rom.
Back when I had my EVO I remember people saying AOSP uses different parameters to measure signals compared to stock roms, is this still true?
This phone is one of the best I've ever had, loving every feature of it, currently running Embryo rom 6.11 with cymbaline 3.0.74 kernal, amazing speeds benching in high 11's, its twiz based since I personally hate asop lol, all around beast of a phone, you did good...
