Calculator-style snap-on cover/case? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of the hard plastic shells/covers I've seen seem to only go on the back of the KF.
I'm looking for a one that is similar to most graphing/scientific calculator covers - something that will protect the front of the device when the device is not in use, and stays on the back of the device when I'm using it.
Has anyone either seen a case explicitly designed for this use case (pun not intended) or tried to put a regular hard cover on the screen-side of the KF?

That's a great idea! I love the way my TI-89 case works.

The closest thing I've seen to what you are talking about is this one, but I'm not sure that it secures itself to the back. It looks like it might though.

That looks nice and inexpensive too. I've never seen that one before... nice find. I wonder if it would actually stay attached to the device well. There's not much for it to grab onto.

I can't tell for sure from the main picture whether the case is put on the front side. The product description only mentions protecting the back and the sides.
Still, at $5, it's worth a try. Thanks

They make a clear one too. And considering the Kindle Fire's symmetrical design, anything that goes on the back will go on the front as well.

Nice

This is a really nice case. I just wish it was cheaper.

OP reporting back, got mine today.
The Good: It will stay on snugly when covering the display side.
The Bad: It's kind of a pain in the ass to remove. Definitely not anywhere near as convenient as a calculator cover. It tends to latch onto the side of the KF where the soft and shiny plastics meet.
Overall: Not bad at all for $5.
Also, I suspect it'll end up scratching up the shiny plastic in the long run due to lack of padding, but given the low cost of the KF, it's not a big deal.

Just got this case, looks great & fits perfect

You guys should try this case too. (Incipio Feather case) I spent like 3 days searching for the perfect case for my captivate (from silicone case to leather pouch) and this one has by far the best quality and look, not to mention about the extreme thinness. Got it this afternoon and fits perfect to the phone and looks great as in the picture. The only draw back is that it doesn't cover the front side, but I can live with that.
I loved that case with my iphone, it's crazy light and thin. The only problem I had on my iphone is all I could get was white and it got nasty dirty in a week, so I would advise against white

Is it made of the soft rubber like material that gathers dust?
it's made of plastic, but looks like it's mixed w/ some sort of rubber or soft material because it's got that little bit of soft touch. (maybe that's why it's more flexible too) So far it doesn't gather any dust like some silicone cases do, but i will have to see more since i just got it today.

Ebay captivate incipio and they have the exact same case but in pink (but its called magenta)
From the eBay description: "With a convenient two-part sliding design, the EDGE™ embodies innovative cases focused on accessibility. Simply remove the bottom cap to dock your device in most any docking station for quick and easy charging."
I have a home dock I put the phone in every night. This is the main reason I stopped using a case. How does this design work with the Samsung dock? I can't tell from the pictures and I'm not willing to risk $25 to find out.

Not sure if you realize but the EDGE is a different case than the Feather, which is what the OP got. Again, sorry if you knew that. Just thought you might not realize.

I thought so, but the one I was looking at on eBay (that I took that quote from) matched the one in the pic the OP posted.
Just wondering if this slides on like a silicone case or if it clips on like other hard plastic cases, is it hard plastic or like a hard silicone?
Any way you could take a picture, the incipio site doesn't really show anything to great about it?
Does it fit tight?
How does it hook on?
Even though I'm a dude I'm tempted to get the "Magenta" one just to spruce up my phone haha.
Is it hard to get on and off? I need to replace my battery once a day.
The Feather is 1 piece that snaps on, and from the pictures, it looks like it only hugs the corners. The EDGE is a 2 piece snap on case.
*taken from http://www.myincipio.com/
Does anyone have any photos of this case from the top or sides? I can't find any real world or manufacturer pics of that.
that looks nice
it doesn't cover the edges and by the looks of it, it only protects the back and if you place it face down it won't lift the phone off the surface any
It looks nice but it doesn't protect anything. The corners and front have no protection. With my experience when you drop a phone the corners get messed up

Atrix Back cover

Since the back cover for the Atrix is one piece and actually covers the sides as well, i was wondering if these can be made out of carbonfiber. Anyone have the hookup on someone that can make custom CF parts?
Getting a case that snaps around this seems counter intuitive. You'd think the incipio and spek cases would just be replacement covers.

I was on some website, I cant remember and they had other backcovers on pre-order for $20.... They all looked like a rubberized material with a sort of carbon fiber design and each had a motorola symbol in the center. Either blue, green or pink.
I believe it was MobileCity Online or something like that. Definitely only preorder status right now.
I agree the back is waaaay too slippery. I feel like I am going to drop it while typing. I am holding out for Powermat to release a back to use with the charging pad. If not, I might opt for the soft rubber battery covers.
Interesting. I'd like to get an extra one to use as a template. I think i got someone lined up for carbon fiber but i'd need to give them a template that wouldnt survive. I also have to make a minimum order of like 50, which i'd toss up on Ebay.
i'd be down for a couple if you could post some shots of what it would look like...since it does wrap around the corners it would slim down the phone too (versus case)...

I would so buy one.
I have no idea how much these are going to cost me and i wont know until i can give them a battery cover to work with.
Honestly, if i have to get 50 made (they estimated 50-100), i wouldnt do it unless the price i could sell them for was about $40. Regular cases are around $30 so $40 would be a great price. Most CF cases are grossly overpriced and i'd like to avoid that.
Also, this would be a replacement for the battery cover. It wouldn't be a case so it would still work in the docking stations.
I seriously doubt you'll ever see a carbon or any other compost back. There is just no way to mold in the little clips that hold the back on. So plastic is your only bet. you can't even wrap in carbon because you need to fold the material over the edge for a good hold, and doing so would block the locking clips.
I'm trying my hand at covering the back in 3M DI-NOC (carbon fiber looking vinyl), which should give it some grip.
I have no experience with CF but those little tabs may be moldable (is that even a word??). Ill continue to investigate. If it doesnt work, i lost nothing.
If you get that Dinoc on post some pics up here. I'd be interested to see how it holds up around the corners since it cannot be folded back inside due to very small tolerances between the phone and the cover.
having a little experience with molding and CF, it will be so hard to get a good piece with the proper mounting tabs, you'll have more scrap than good pieces. Not to mention that when it's that thin, it will probably snap after a few uses (mounting clips, not cover). CF isn't some magical material you can will into any shape like you can melted plastic. To mold in the locking tabs means the piece would be "clipped" into the mold upon completion, not a desirable situation.
I will post if i get the DI-NOC to look presentable. I know a few places sell pre-cut DI-NOC protectors, but those don't cover 100% of the phone.
Your experience with CF is a lot more than mine, so ill take your word for it, but i will still investigate because it wont cost me anything. If it works, great.
The only thing i'll put on mine is a very thin "sticker" or nothing. A case isnt going to work for me as i will be using a dock. It seems stupid to think that companies made a case when all they had to do was replicate the battery cover and then market this as "Hey look, our solution works with your dock."

Hey, if you can get it done, then more power to you, just trying to make sure you have a realistic outlook going in.
I'm betting companies don't make just backs because the design is 'proprietary' to the manufacturer.

I didnt even think of that! Surely there is some Chinese company chomping at the bit to make some cash.
EDIT
A clear acrylic battery cover would look cool. Show the insides a bit. And that will SURELY be cheaper than CF.
Im full of ideas today.
I apparently fail at vinyl. I can't get it to wrap the corners nicely, the stuff is too thick.

That **** is ROUGH, let me tell you.... I have done rear view mirrors (not side view, the interior ones) and man I thought all 11 years experience I've had doing vinyl was a damn joke! I gave up on even starting the back panel, check out the thread I just created for the carbon fiber front and sides, not to mention the back panel with REMOVED AT&T logo, REMOVED "HD VIDEO" text, and the "blur" in Moto blur....

Any open top pour with elastic on side

I'm looking for a pouch/slip style case for the S3. It is an open top type with elastic on the side.
I just want a case like this for when its in my pocket at work to protect the screen.
I am going to buy the official Samsung S3 flip case when it comes out as well. In general I hate cases as they make phones so slim, and then bulky cases go on them.
I like the look of the S3 whereby if the back gets scratched you can replace anyway. I prefer to use the phone naked, but when in my pocket I want it in a slip case oe pouch.
I don't want one of these pull tab pouches, last one I had stained the screen on a phone I had.
btw I'm in UK, so online, shop, eBay etc is fine
cheers

Sort of, but there was a case before I had (trying to find a pic) that was more open on the sides and had elastic on the sides. Sort of like the Blackberry case you get, where they just slide in, and are quite sturdy to protect the screen. I prefer to use my phone naked when in use
I can find a lot of sock type pouches, this one I'm after was a little more solid to protect the screen
after looking all day, think I've found one, not sure its exactly what Im looking for from the pictures though, was £8 so will see..

Well received that one, but its ridiculously too big. the height is fine but its not thin enough for the phone. it just slips straight out, about twice too thivk for it.
Anyone know of another one like this please?
I got this one - no web on the sides, but a perfect fit and slim...

Titan Aegis

Ok, so I just received my Titan Aegis case. Sorry, no pics as I don't own a camera other than my N5, and it can't take pictures of itself . Initial thoughts are:
Fitment- Not great. Definitely not as clean as the Otterbox Commuter or Defender on my Galaxy Nexus. I also have a gap at the top as the rubber won't completely slip into the plastic.
Feel- SLIPPERY. If there wasn't some rubber to grip on to on the sides, this thing would go flying out of my hand constantly.
Looks- Decent. It's not a bad looking case, not as bulky as an Otterbox. Doesn't add too much to the thickness of the phone, nor to the height.
Will it last?- I think this case could withstand a pretty decent fall. The rubber is fairly thick, and the plastic would probably take the brunt of the impact.
Million dollar question: Is it worth the money?- If the case fit properly, yes. I'm going to have to contact Trident to see if they can do anything about the gap at the top. If not, then no, it is not worth shelling out that money for something that won't fit the way it is supposed to. But since Otterbox has no plans for a case for our lovely phone, I don't see us having very many choices if you need a fairly rugged case. I'll keep this up to date after I get in contact with Trident and maybe try to get some pictures posted up.
I'd check to make sure all the rubber parts are popped into place. I had a gap at the top as well until I made sure all the rubber was all snug everywhere else(camera/flash, sides, etc.), then all the gaps went away and it fits perfectly. Much better than any Otterbox I've ever owned.

I used to have the same problem with the case, but as the guy mentioned there is a specific way to add the hard shell. What I did was, instead of beginning with the power button side, I started with the volume buttons side. My gaps are closed, so it's not a flaw, just most of us were doing it wrong.

Official Google Nexus 5 Bumper (semi-review?)

When I ordered my official Google Nexus 5 Bumper in Red I was more than excited to have an official case I knew I wouldn't have any problems with.
Upon opening I loved it. The red bumper on my Nexus 5 looked fantastic! I was thrilled that I was going to be carrying it around now.
First:
It fits perfectly with the buttons on the sides as well as cutouts for speakers and buttons. There's no doubt about it, although the buttons may be a a little harder to push at first, due to the case's button popouts being rigid, you can quickly get used to this and it isn't a real problem. The cutout for the speakers don't seem to limit the sound at all, so that was all good. And the cutout for the charging port fits most chargers without any issue. I only had an issue with one of my cables that has a huge plastic piece around the micro USB metal piece, but it wasn't made for the Nexus 5 so it doesn't really affect my opinion of the cutout. Plus it works with wireless charging, so that's a plus. The cutout for the headphone jack fit all my headphones perfectly, even ones with the L-shaped jack, so I was happy with that as well.
Other than that, I loved the relatively slim design of the case as well as the nexus logo on the back. I can noticeably feel the case's added width when I take it off, but it isn't a huge difference like many other cases may add. So it keeps the device still relatively slim.
BUT I WAS DISAPPOINTED after I put it on and started assessing the actual fit. I thought it would be a harder material. Although it "snapped" on perfectly, the case was loose around the top and bottom.
On the top:
The case could be pushed in, to where it would make a sound from rubbing on the Nexus 5. I adjusted the case and put it on again but nothing. It almost felt like the cheaper silicon cases bought for devices that eventually warp and don't fit properly. This is extremely annoying (at least for me) because I expected the case to be a perfect fit on the top and bottom without me being able to push parts of the case and have them move, or make a rubbing sound.
On the bottom:
The same thing occurred. The small piece of rubber above the charging port (closest to screen) is very flimsy. I noticed wear from two days of use. This involved taking it out and putting it in my pocket. My pants aren't tight so it wasn't a squeeze. It came from me grabbing the case right above this small piece of rubber and pulling it out. As with the top, I can push this piece of rubber pretty easily and have it move in and out (or up and down, however you want to say it). It seems it will continue to get looser until it is warped a bit.
Overall:
I was disappointed with the case. I contacted Google and as per their return policy they offered a refund without returning or swapping the case. The top and bottom "mis"-fits really killed the excitement for the case. With the top being able to be pushed in AND making a rubbing sound, it irritated the crap out of me. And with the bottom rubber piece over the charging port being flimsy and possibly warping JUST from everyday use of the case, I can't love the case like I wanted.
Last thing:
Anyone else have this issue? Or any other issues? When I read and watched multiple reviews, none of them seemed to show all of the bad things I found with my case. So part of me thinks it may be just mine. I am considering ordering another with the refund offer but I am hesitant to spend money on another and have the same results.
I use the official bumper case for my 5 in the really dark grey/black color. I really like this case. I didn't pay full price for it so that might be why I don't mind it as much.
I do not have any loose areas anywhere on mine and fits very snug.
I seem to be in the minority here as I really like using this case. It's simple, slim, feels good, fits nicely, it's everything I need and want in a case. I'm extremely cautious with my phones and would never be caught with an otterbox or any other humongous case. For me slim and simple is the way to go.
Sorry to hear you encountered some problems with yours.

same here. it works perfectly with my phone too. no loose top or bottom areas here. i don't know about slim but it is handy and gives a good grip. also the charging point rubber you talked about? for me it's a bit tight fit for the charging pin but it just gives way when pushed with a bit of presssure and comes back when pin is removed. otherwise no problems for me with this case and i'm pretty satisfied.

I saw a video about the replica bumper cases from China and decided to get a couple of them. They said the quality was identical to the ones from Google. Plus, it was only $20 for 2 cases. When I get them, I'll post here with a mini review.

I haven't received them yet. Will let you know as soon as I get them. Shipping from China takes a while.
I got a red one about 3 weeks ago.
It started peeling (sort of) at the corners within 10 days, black material was showing up.
Upon removing the case, I discovered that it left long marks on the rubbery back of the black Nexus 5, along the ridges of the bumper.
Thats when I decided to sell it off.
Simply put, it looks awesome, fits awesome, but as a product, its bad, and not at all worth the money.
Atleast those marks are slowly dissappearing (Trust me, those arent dust or something)
