●●[ROOTED][GUIDE]Wifi Reverse teTher-Windows and Ubuntu-Ad hoc Networks●●
This guide teaches you to reverse tether your Android phone via WiFi. That is, it allows you to use your Ethernet connection of PC on your Android phone. It is useful for those who do not have WiFi routers and data connection. So if you have unlimited data plan for your computer, why not share the connection with your phone?
I am not the developer of the files supplied
Requirements:-
1.Rooted Phone
2.Wifi enabled Laptop or PC
3.Root explorer or any other application which gives system access
4.File in the attachement
Procedure :-
Phone:
Download Wpa_supplicant.zip and extract "wpa_supplicant" from it, save it on your SD card.
Open Root Explorer, and grant it superuser access when asked for.
Navigate to system -> bin and long press on wpa_supplicant; Select copy, and paste the file into any folder on your SD card.
Now navigate to the file you downloaded, copy it in same way, and paste it back to system -> bin. Note, you might need to mount the system as R/W instead of R/O by pressing a button on the top just before pasting the file.
Reboot.
▬▬Ubuntu (Must work for other Linux Distros too)▬▬:
Open Network Connections
Goto Wireless tab, select add, and set the following:
SSID: <Any_name_you_like>
Mode: Ad hoc
Leave other things unchanged, and go to Ipv4 settings tab
Set method to Shared to other computers
Go to Wireless security tab and set Security to WEP 40/128 bit key and set key to a numeric password (or hexadecimal one).
Check the connect automatically box on top of the tabs and press Save.
Your Android phone must now detect this network, and you can establish the connection by using your security key.
▬▬Windows XP, Vista, 7▬▬
Download and Install Connectify from www . connectify.me/download-lite/
Start Connectify Hotspot by giving a name and password to your hotspot and selecting the Ethernet connection to share. Make sure the security type is WEP or Open.
Disable your firewall (Simply adding it to exceptions doesn't work for AVG at least)
Now your phone should be able to see the hotspot and establish the connection using the password set.
Known Issues :
1.Random disconnections (Very less frequency)
2.Disconnections due to screen lock / sleep on laptop
3.For me Security mode does not works
HIT THANKS IF IT WORKED
ENJOY

of course. I can read English letters
Maybe I forgot about permissions or change owner.
Besides, if you use connectify, don't need to create ad-hoc hotspot
But, anyway, thnks for this

what's wifi adhoc for sir? is this for file sharing via wifi?
ad hoc?
if you have a laptop or a PC with wifi and already connected to internet, you can make an adhoc connection to share your internet connection with others. in normal situation we can't detect adhoc connection with our device. with this simple mod we can detect and connect to any unsecured adhoc connection.
????
I use connectify to share internet pc with wifi to my device..

yup...it has same purpose but different method.

I faced the same issue few months back..
As far as i knw...adhoc support may come in ICS.....meanwhile try this on the PC/laptop/Server you want to connect.......assuming u r on Win7...
1. Open command prompt with administrator privileges(right click, run as administrator) and type
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=samsung key=password keyUsage=persistent
Click to collapse
2. then type
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Click to collapse
Now check your phone wifi settings u will have a AP with name samusng. Password is "password".
3. To stop replace start with stop in the above command.
This is pretty safe and wont effect any other network settings. If other people are also connected to the old ad-hoc network, tell them to connect to this new network...
If the above doesnt work, disable data on your play and enable wifi hotspot....connect to it via ur pc....and then u may share the internet connection of the pc to play.....or play multiplayer game....
Hope this helps!
Hi!
I borrow the thread instead of making a new one since I want Ad-hoc to work as well, and I'm "only" (better IMO) on Win XP.
And I wonder, is the "WiFi Ad Hoc enabler" app compatible and working with the Xperia Play?
And I got the official 2.3.4 ROM as well, version 4.0.2.A.0.42.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards RazerBlader.

After an hour or so of searching for the right file, I want to share with A100 owners how to enable ad-hoc support for their ICS-running tablets. All the work was done by other users on this forum, but I just want to compile the right links and method here.
1) Root your device. Follow the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531646 and you should be set.
2) Remount /system as rw. In a root terminal,
Code:
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /system
For the next few steps, I recommend using a file manager.
3) Navigate to /system/bin and backup your original wpa_supplicant file.
4) Copy the wpa_supplicant from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25356357&postcount=136 to /system/bin.
5) Change the permissions of your new wpa_supplicant file to match the old one. It should be -rwxr-xr-x.
And you're done! Ad-hoc networks are now prefixed with a (*) symbol. Tether your tablet to your phone and free your ICS from hotspots!

The right wpa_supplicant varies by device, which is why it took so much trial-and-error for me to find the right one. This one I can confirm to work on Acer A100 running ICS. You'll have to look for a wpa_supplicant that works on the Galaxy Note. Look around on the forums and experiment with wpa_supplicants and you might get lucky (just don't forget to backup your existing one)

I guess I'm not sure what this ad-hoc really does. I can tether my phone's 3G network as a hotspot. My A100 running Flexreaper ROM can connect to it and browse the internet just fine without modifying the wpa_supplicant. Maybe civato already included the modified wpa_supplicant in the ROM?
That's probably right; the Flexreaper ROM probably has an ad-hoc compatible wpa_supplicant. I'm pretty sure Cyanogenmod has, too. Ad-hoc allows a wireless device to connect to another peer-to-peer style (i.e., without a router). Cell phones that broadcast hotspots are ad-hoc networks. For some reason the stock Android OS does not allow connecting to ad-hoc networks, so a modified wpa_supplicant must be used.

I copied the file over. I used root explorer for everything. I will check it momentarily.

Are you tethering using Bluetooth or are you using a cable? If you are using a cable, what kind of cable. I have looked for a micro usb to micro usb cable but cannot find one. Please advise.
---------- Post added at 01:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:58 PM ----------
Okay, it's working perfectly over Bluetooth. My speed to New Orleans was 1.9mbps down and .9 mbps up. Not bad at all on 3g, Bluetooth. I am very pleased. Now if I could SMS my son. He does not care for google chat or google plus, but he has unlimited texting. I don't because I don't text much.
Thanks for compiling this for us.
Thanks!
Thank you! That was really quick and painless! I now can connect my A100 to my Nokia E72 using Joikuspot!!
Initially, I followed the instructions but I could not mount RW even after successful rooting - not sure why. If you have the same problem, you can try the following:
1. Turn off your Wifi before proceeding
2. Save the modified wpa_supplicant provided in the given link to your PC - e.g. the desktop (you'll need to unzip it)
3. Connect your A100 to the PC via the USB cable.
4. Copy the wpa_supplicant file to anywhere in your A100 (temporarily) using your PC's usual file manager.
5. Use a good file explorer on your A100 (I used Root Explorer - very powerful! But must purchase from Googleplay - $5 Singapore dollars only) to get into the file directories of your A100 and find the modified wpa_supplicant file. Long touch the file until the menu appears and choose 'cut' from the menu.
6. Use Root Explorer to set "mount R/W" which is a convenient button near the top left of the screen
7. Now navigate to the /system/bin folder and find the original wpa_supplicant file - long touch it until the menu appears. Rename it to something like 'wpa_supplicant_original' or whatever you like.
8. Paste the new wpa_supplicant file
9. Exit and go back to settings to turn on the Wifi
10. You should be able to see a (*) next to E72-Joikuspot_XXXXXXX (assuming your phone is on and Joikuspot is on). Now just connect the usual way and now you have adhoc access!

Either your device specific forum, if there is one, or if not there's a forum for devices without their own forum. Some things are universal to a point and others aren't, so if something here doesn't work it'll likely need something based on your device or one with similar hardware.

I use " FoxFi" WiFi tethering app. Works great but make sure you set a password (my fave)! You can also use TrevE Mod WiFi tether, may not work with some roms though...( use the settings below for TrevE Mod App:
TREV E WIFI TETHER APP SETUP
Step 1. Download Wifi Tether TrevE Mod APK
Step 2. Open the Wifi Tether app, hit Menu button and hit “Settings”
Step 3. Press on “Change Device-Profile”.
Step 4. Choose “Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)”.
Step 5. Choose “Change Setup-Method”.
Step 6. Choose “Netd-Ndc (master)”.
Step 7. Choose “Send Netd Max Client Cmd”.
Step 8. You can set your wifi encryption and SSID here to whatever you’d like.
Step 9. Make sure either “WiFi-driver reload” or “WiFi-driver reload 2″ is checked on. If wifi tether fails for some reason you can change this to the one you didn’t use.
Step 10. Scroll down and make sure “MSS clamping” and “Routing fix” are both checked on.
Step 11. Turn on tethering by hitting the Wifi icon.
Step 12. You can check logs by hitting Menu button->Show Log. If you don’t see any errors you are good to go.
Step 13. Now, try connecting to your wifi tether using your computer or another wifi device. Once connected, it should show up under Access Control. (hit Menu then Access Control)
Step 14. Enjoy your wifi tether without paying carriers twice!
ENJOY!
I hope one of these will work for you!

Apparently its your service provider detecting that you are tethering....What provider do you have (Sprint, Verizon)? FoxFi tether app shoud work....I use it on all my devices...If you already have FoxFi, uninstall it and reinstall it but be sure to set a password.
Did anyone even try my post about Connections Optimizer? It's what you have to do while on stock.
When Connections Optimizer is on, your phone will randomly try to turn the wifi antenna on to "optimize" data. When it does this, it takes control of the wifi away from the tethering app. Turn it off, and this issue goes away.

I started a post in Troubleshooting about this....I can get TrevE's to work and I can download regular files but I can't download torrents and files of that nature....REALLY FREAKIN WEIRD!!! BUT - I can use FoxFi and USB tether but you have to install PDANET on your computer...when you download the app to your phone and connect via USB it will give you the option to download...
My question post in trouble shooting is labeled "How Do I Change WAP" settings...
I really believe this is the problem...
Tell me what you think and Try the USB with FoxFi..
I'm currently downloading and AOSP....ROM to see if it wifi tether will work on it...I'll post my results here...

Hello,
I am running Resurrection Remix v5.0.5-20140309 on my Note 2, upgraded from v5.0.2-20140212.
And since then, it doesn't connect to some WiFi networks like my home WiFi. When I activate WiFi, no automatic connection and when trigerring a manual connection from the WiFi menu, it directly to disabled state and doesn't even try to connect (it seems).
Hoewever, it connects normally to my work WiFi.
Note that my home wifi runs on 2,4GHz, my work wifi on both 2,4 and 5GHz.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks.

Go to the /data/misc/wifi/ way with a root file manager and open this text file name as wpa_supplicant.conf . Find your home wifi. Look the text "autojoin=" is 0 or 1. If it 0, change to 1.
Try it, maybe work.

No mention of autojoin in my wpa_applicant.conf file.
However, I don't know how, it happens that when I was editing the file, my device shows the WiFi icon on the header. But it disappeared right after and back to the same situation.

Actually it recreates the file from itself without the need of rebooting the phone. And the new file has all my previous known WiFi networks connection details.
But it still doesn't fix anything.
