Are screen protectors really needed on the Epic 4G Touch? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Man, I thought I finished posting this but I guess not. Must have forgot to hit submit.
Are screen protectors really needed with Gorilla Glass? I've had them on my last four phones and never thought of not having one but my wife just got an Android and her screen glides like silk. Also, I've noticed it seems much clearer.
How do the glass screens on these phones hold up to scratching?

Some have reported issues with scratching. I use one, its cheap protection for your expensive device.

I guess my current thinking is that maybe a few light scratches might be an OK trade off to the Zag adding a little blur to the screen, having the tacky non-smooth feeling when I glide my finger across the screen and harder clean-up.
Actually the Zag gets beaten to hell pretty easy. I have marks on it that I can not remove. One could argue that the Zag took the abuse instead of the screen but my thought is that the Zag is softer then the Gorilla Glass so that is why it marks up easier.
I guess I could keep the Zag and never get a scratch on my actual screen but be staring threw more noticeable scratches on the Zag, or maybe have less noticeable scratches on the harder glass and a more clear experience.
Just can't make up my mind and this is my first experience with Gorilla Glass.

zagg isnt the only screen protector company, there are many types of protectors also, zagg is soft ive had one, ive also had other that are hard and your finger will just slide across it. Sure you will still get scratches on the protector but if its to many get a new protector and slap it on and have a nice clear screen again. A lot easier then replacing the screen imo.

Zagg sucks. Try steinheil. It's crystal clear, hard to scratch, and smooth. I've had mine on since october and it's still looking good.

Yep I tried several different brands of both wet and dry and ended up with the steinheil sgp ultra crystal or something like that. Aside from one scratch which I believe would have certainly scratched the phone its good. You cant even tell its there. When I'm done with this phone I plan to sell it and use that money towards my new one. Its easy to sell a phone in excellent condition because it lived in cases and screen protectors.

I have cheap eBay screen protector on my phone. I figure I spent $250 on this device might as well at least have a basic case and screen protector on it.

Yes this phone scratches way to easy!! Its not like the original galaxy s where you could not harm the screen no matter what. I run a zag and I love it! The easiest to install and after a few weeks its real smooth.

I don't like them as they make the white areas in apps and websites look terrible with rainbow streaks

Steinhall is the way to go. You really can't tell anything is on unless you screw up installation and dust is caught on the screen.

So that picture is pretty funny because I have access to a NASA grade clean room here locally!
Actually, my wife is a manager at an international company that builds clean room environments, filtration systems for clean room environments etc. They actually have a couple dozen major government and NASA contracts!
Hey honey, can I come use a test clean room environment to install my screen protector!?

Take a nice hot shower then after you're done all of the dust particles in the bathroom would have settled. Now you have a dust free environment. Hasn't failed me yet.

Or do what I did and buy the phone on release day, never put on a screen cover, and still not have scratches on the screen. Phone goes in pocket, jacket (when it was cold), has been dropped (the rest of the phone has some slight scratches), and travels across the country every week. Screen still holding strong.
Could be lucky, could be gorilla glass. Not sure, don't care. Won't ever use a cover again.

Screen protector is needed even with gorilla glass...

I've tried a few screen protectors now and I hate them all. The Gorilla Glass seems to hold its own without one at all, plus it feels much smoother when scrolling on the screen. Just try not to have piles of keys or rocks in your phone pocket and you'll be fine. I've had mine since it launched in February and have had no issues so far.
Realook by far is the best one I have tried, and I have tried many. You gain security without any drawbacks. Don't knock it till you try it. Have had this protector on my phone for several months now and several small scratched have shown up on it. It's $5.50, plastic and takes a beating so my real screen doesn't have too. (Obvious point, no one scratches their phone screen on purpose, the point of a protector is not to protect your phone from normal daily use when you are being careful, but for the times when **** just happens and there was nothing you could do about it. That's when having these things are most important / useful).

I say get a screen protector and don't leave the gorilla glass naked. I babied my phone for a week before I got anything on it... then two scratches from god knows what. Gorilla glass will NOT hold up to minute particles of nothingness in your pocket so be aware.
I personally like the marquee splash screen protectors (I think that's the name) that are on amazon. Clear, feels like the normal screen, went on fine.
I tried ghost armor at first and I hated it.. it had orange peel and dented really easily. It seemed to shrink over time, too, which is weird..

Gorilla Glass is bull**** man. I took off my old screen protector because there was a minute imperfection in it and cleaned it with a brand new lint free cloth and now there are 3 tiny scratches in the glass. I mean with the new screen protector you can't really see it, but it's such bull****.
ZAGG Invisible Shield.
Lifetime warranty FTW!
I think i order BestSkinksEver total body skin.
I had bad experience with Zagg, i just don't like it.
Thank you all
I accidentally sat on my phone wearing jeans with rivets for about 15 minutes; no scratches. I still wouldn't put it in my pocket naked though. But no protector.

Do you have it installed on your Atrix? I installed on my son's iPod touch 17 months ago and it still hasn't peeled. Then I did my Dad's iPhone 4 8 months ago and the front is still looking great. Not sure why I didn't do my Atrix yet.
Edit: I added Moto ruggedized battery cover for minimalistic grip to phone. Really like it so far. In stock at cnn.cn.

Yes that's true, you can actually call it an OP magnet but we're talking about screen protector here and I dont think there's anything else that can protect your screen but the Invisible Shield by zagg.... I have speck casing on my atrix with the invisible shield for the screen and I accidentally dropped it like 3-4 feet high on its flatscreen and not even a scratch on the screen.... my co-worker bought an atrix too and with it he also got a speck casing and one of those screen protector from at&t store, couple of days later while we were talking about our atrices/atrixes he accidentally dropped it in front of me and when he picked it up the screen was cracked! He was mad as hell because he didnt listen to me... lol
I mean the stuff they show on their demos is for real, I've used invisible shield on each of my phone for so many years now and each of them were protected by invisible shield... yes the invisible shield is a orange peel/lint magnet but you can easily wipe them off, I guess for me I'd be more concern about the protection of my phone and not the OPs
I tried an extra Skinomi protector a friend had and it developed bubbles a couple weeks after installation. Then I got a SGP Steinheil Ultra Crystal and I'm extremely happy with it. My friends who also have Atrix couldn't even tell it had a protector on. Plus it isn't a wet install and takes just a couple of minutes to put on. It's the hard plastic type and very slightly drags more than the bare screen but it's hardly noticeable, especially in comparison to the soft plastic type like Skinomi.
i got zagg just because i got tired of the fingerprints that attract to the glass. before i got it though, the screen was exposed to some harsh conditions at my job, and did not scratch or anything; so it is a tough screen
Invisible shield's original screens were pretty bad op, but I've had one on my evo for nearly a year now and it's just as good as the day I installed it.
They have a new formula that is SUPPOSED to be less op, but it's only for the iPhone right now

Anyone Using A Matte Screen Protector?

I cant find any. its probably just because of the phones newness i guess, but there is a shortage of cheap accessories on eBay... lol but patience is a virtue...
DO NOT use matte protector, it makes the SAMOLED look like 1970s B&W TV with no signal, I tried it on my vibrant and on the new sgs-II with same results. Anyways if you want one then its available here:

hmmmm never heard this before.... this is not good. thanks for the heads up. i was deff gonna buy one. how did it do against finger prints?
It does reduce the fingerprints as compared to glossy one but at a cost of looking at horribly pixelated screen with rainbow effect which is much noticeable in solid colors or backgrounds. You'd wish they worked as well as matte screens on laptop.

I used to have a matte screen protector on my HD2. Gave me headaches from the rainbow oil-slick effect.
Yep, the other members are correct. I had one on the S2 for about...two days because my OEM screen protector had gotten bent, and it was the worst move ever. Touch accuracy was a joke. The screen looked horrible. ~1980's tv
Yeah I hated my matte screen protector on my SGS4G. Made it look really pixilated like vicosphi said.

Unlike the typical screen protectors, the ones I got from XtremeGuard do not have 3 layers of plastic (meaning there's no protective layer covering the top of the screen protector itself, just the screen protector and the backing).
In addition, the sides of the screen protector do not stick to the screen. You get a bubbling effect all around the screen protector. This probably has something to do with the poor cutting of the film. You can see that they aren't well cut even before peeling and applying the screen protector. I haven't had this issue with other screen protectors, and yes, I've used many.
Maybe they sent me a bad batch but I'm only speaking from experience. I'm not talking about their other full body products, only the screen protector.
I still have around 4 or 5 of them lying around at home left over from testing if anyone wants pictures but that would have to wait until tonight.
Just got my phone today... ordered Realook Screen protector two days ago... I had it on my Samsung Vibrant.. one of the best! It gives the real glass feel and looks like nothing is there.... hope it give me the same result.

matte Screen protector
I tried a matte screen protector and am glad I finally got some regular ones. The matte one, does not look good on the phone. It is harder to read smaller words and does give the screen a much less defined look. One other big issue is my matte screen did not have the cutout for the front facing camera and every time I tried using the front facing camera, my face was all blurred out. One selling point to the matte screen is enhanced visibility in sunlight. I found out this is not true with the super AMOLED plus screen. The screen looks fantastic in sunlight with a regular screen protector, and dull looking with the matte screen. Hope this helps.

I purchased an xtreme guard on Ebay and the cutout was reversed. The sticky part was on the wrong side. The seller is sending me a replacement. hopefully it's correct this time. 3 layers? That's the cheap crap. Why do you need to cover a scratchproof screen protector? How do you think they keep costs down? By not doing laying an unnecessary layer of film. Even the $30 ZAGG doesn't have a top protective layer.
In addition, you more than likely applied the film incorrectly.
Mine should be here anyday now. I'll post how to make it proper.
I don't work for Xtreme. I've just always used them since my LG Dare days.
I've worked in the wireless industry since 2005. I applied over 400 screen protectors in the past year.
I can say it's not for everyone. Especially the wet applications. I actually ordered one to prove you wrong.
I'll also do an iPhone 4 and Touchpad as well.

I didn't read the directions. I used a spray bottle. I didn't use the squeegee that came with it. I used another. The screen protectors work perfectly fine. Yes, it gets bubbles. But that's the concept. That's how all wet applications work. I did 3 today and they all settled / cured within hours. Be sure to take your time. I use an air duster. A little heat goes a long way and speeds up the process. I usually throw it in my pocket screen facing my leg.
If you get dust under there, you muffed up.
Some of the bubble will stay under there for 1-3 days. You can work them out. If you stretch the screen protector it will overlap and you will see it lift up. I left mine sit in the sunlight for a little and the bubble started working themselves out. Make sure you're doing it right first before telling everyone to avoid the company. Have a little more tact. I'm sure most of the others are probably better at simple things like applying screen protectors than you are.

To me it seems like the oleophobic coating is responsible. It's probably really soft and prone to scratches. Whatever the case, Samsung has really let me down. How could the rigidity of such a large screen get looked past QA when it can be scratched this easily? Anyways, just thought potential buyers be forewarned.
Been using it since December 2011. No scratches.
Did you look under a bright light? I have 2 other friends who also reported hair line scratches.
Do you have a screen protector? Do you use a carrying case? What do you wipe your screen with?
And this is why I always put a screen protector on my phone.
Man really weird I've had mine since Jan, would put it in pocket with keys and what not till I got a holster and I don't have one scratch. I guess it's really a hit or miss with the screen. I don't like running a screen protector sorry to hear

Yes I've looked under a bright light.
No screen protector.
No carrying case.
I wipe my screen with a micro fiber cloth (I honestly don't need to wipe the phone much.. not a lot of fingerprints are on the phone due to the oleophobic.. it works great).
The only protection I use are cases (Case-Mate Tough Case [dont use this anymore], Otterbox Commuter [don't use it anymore], and now I use Ringke 4G LTE full time) with GSM Extended Battery.
No case no screen protector been using for 3 months now and not a flaw.
I have a ****load of scratches on mine. Owned it since January. I thought the screen would be comparable to gorilla glass, but I don't believe it is. One of my scratches is probably an inch long and perfectly vertical. Either way I I don't really care that much.
I'm been using my nexus for a bit over a month without a screen protector, and I don't have any scratches like that.

My point was that it got scratched even when I cared so much for the phone. It seems to me like it got scratched from the lint in my pocket. I don't know about most people but that's alarming to me especially knowing I paid $400 for it.

You will find countless threads on this matter. Glass is relatively soft, even hardened glass. A lot of stuff can scratch it, the most common being simple dust particles (Quartz) which are readily available everywhere.
If you put your phone somewhere where it continually rubs against something -like your pocket- it will be scratched sooner or later. Basically as soon as a large enough Quartz particle makes its way into your pocket and on the screen.
So if you put a phone in your pocket without any protection, you didn't care enough for it. :-(
No case. No screen protector. Dropped once from a 6ft wall. Little ding in the corner.
Oh and I've had it since Dec. 15th.

No scratches since Canadian launch in December
Been using it for about 3 months now and I have a few light scratches near the top and bottom, and a few REALLY REALLY REALLY light ones on the screen, nothing that is actually visible without looking really hard. If you want 0 scratches get a screen protector because you're bound to get scratches. No phone out there has a totally scratch resistant screen.
They are all made of a glass/plastic hybrid so little particles floating around or getting on your screen will probably scratch it, especially if you wipe it everyday, might be something on the screen while you whip it :/.
But yeah don't blame Samsung for the screen scratching, they never said it can't be scratched and no company can guarantee that.
same here, two days one little scratch, always used with care
I've been tossing my phone in my pocket with keys, lighter, etc etc since November 18 and haven't had a scratch...

As stated by many others before, Gorilla glass is not scratch proof. It is possible to scratch it. A friend of mine had his phone for 2 days and somehow managed to get a small scratch on the screen.
$4-15 is a small price to pay for those of us that are OCD about things like that. Not to mention high quality protectors have no affect on screen quality and feel.
I've had multiple people not even notice the SGP Ultra Nano on my S III. That's with 2 other S III's in the office without screen protectors to compare with.
If you don't feel the need to have one on your phone, there's no need to discourage other people from getting one.
I'm also guessing you're a redditor. I'd challenge you or anyone that claims screen protectors are pointless to video yourself taking a small amount of sand and rub in on your screen and see if you get scratches. Most (since I can't claim I've watched every single video) if not all the videos on youtube testing gorilla glass never use material that's harder than glass. Quartz is harder than glass and will definitely scratch the screen and is common in sand.
Sometimes people wonder about phantom scratches on their screen. It's probably because they've been near construction sites, volleyball courts, playgrounds, baseball fields, etc where you can find sand. Maybe you drive by a source with your window down and manage to get a tiny amount on your cloths and in your pocket somehow. Voila, phantom scratches.

I suppose. I've put sharp and dull metal against GG, rocks, sand (been to the beach many times and have had no problems with GG. But, of course, one person's non issue could be another's hell. So, fine, I'll give you that.
What's a redditor?

I was speaking English. Most people throughout the world are familiar with it.
Anyone recommend one that works well with a tpu case? Good quality as well.

I scratched my bionics gg without a screen protector on it. I stupidly didn't think I needed one either. I have wrapsol protectors on both Gsiii's I have. Best I've ever used. Feels as smooth as the glass did. Lifetime guarantee too.

Yea, I got that . I was just amazed that you would think that just bc it's gorilla glass that no protection is needed. There are A LOT of posts that prove that the gorilla glass is not scratch proof....maybe a little scratch resistant. So to say it's not needed simply bc of being gorilla glass was a bit....well it just led me to believe that maybe u hadn't researched before making that comment. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the reply tho.

Not even about the research, really. I've just put previous phones through the test with no problems. But, it's all good. Do you want you need to.

Are these the kind of screen protectors (like zagg invisibleshield) that r super durable & u have to use water to install? I'm looking for one of those b4 I pick up my SGSIII cuz they're great. dry install screen protectors r too flimsy for my taste
UPDATE: Much appreciated to defnow for the heads up on this great deal on XtremeGuard.com. They are, in fact, the durable invisibleshield style screen protectors that you have to wet-install. I love these because they make your phone literally scratch proof. I bought 3 of them, including 1 full-body one for a grand total of $3.75. You really can't beat that price.

Just bought mine at focalprice.com, and they are very cheap.
Paid around $ 2,21 for 10 pcs. They scratch easy, but for that kind of money I can change them often if necessary
Just ordered mine as well!
Thank you for the heads up on the deal!

Wet application screen protectors give me the heebie jeebies. I'm probably going to get the SGP screen protector that covers the whole screen in this thread. I'm just a little worried about whether a tight fitting TPU case will cause lifting on the edges.

Uhhmm to those whove purchased the xtremeguard.. Dont buy them. Dont even consider it.. Applied mine, worst hr ive ever spent in my life.. In fact the full body over laps the back of the phone... Bad experience and yes i want my 2.88$ back

sorry to hear that.Well the price is much too cheap.
Dude, try this Steinheil Flex HD from SGP. It's quite good, indeed.
I'm using the Steinheil Ultra Nano Clear. It's one of the best screen protectors I have ever used for any phone. No oils get on the screen, and it barely smudges, so I only need to wipe my screen once every 2 days for 10 seconds in the morning, and then it is as good as new.
After you break it in with around 2-3 days of normal use or wiping it down roughly with a micro-fiber for around 10 minutes and then giving it 1-2 hours of use, it is only slightly rougher than the screen with no protector on it.
I can make a video review if you guys are interested. It was so easy to apply, I think I should have made one.

Scratches on your screen? Easy fix

While this is not a direct accessories for this phone it will work for this phone and any other . if you have light scratches or scuffs on your screen from normal use you can use the product below to fix most of them and go back to looking almost new . I figured it worker wonders on my paint I'd try it on my phone and was amazed how well it worked .

I think I'll stick to not scratching my phone.
I dont know about that... car paints is different from glass. I believe that those rubbing compound are like very fine liquid sandpaper that cut the clear coat of the car and bond it.
OP post some results please.
If you're that confident in this fix, ut a fine scratch in your screen and apply it shown in a video.
I'm sure you will get tons of thanks if this is proven to work!
In a similar vein, toothpaste is meant to work quite well for removing fine scratches (on the basis it's very gently abrasive).
I tried it on a scratched watch face once...
The watch smelt very nice afterwards
(Had precisely zero effect on the scratch though)
Thanks for the tip. Is this really works?

I have a video uploading of me applying this stuff to my screen of my HTC One, I am NOT going to purposely scratch the phone that is just stupid. This is to be used for removing small scuffs and scratches from pocket use ect, not gouges. Any scratch that a camera phone can visibly pick up is going to be way to deep.
One thing you guys fail to understand is that Gorilla Glass is FAR FAR FAR more durable than the clear coat of a car that this stuff was made for. When you make a product that fixes clear-coat it has to be some of the most soft gentle compounds that one can find used so that it does not chew or eat away at a clear coat. That is why it works just fine on glass.

if i had the product, i'd test it out on my og droid. How does this stuff work on actual car scratches? I have a few light scratches i wouldnt mind getting rid of. Maybe ill pick it up for that, and just see if it works on the droid lol

it works great if you do not follow the directions. The directions want you ro rub it in, let it dry then rub it off. However from post and testing done in some of the automotive forums i am on it has been concluded that if you rub it in until there is nothing left to rub in then wipe it off it has better results. its done well on my car that had alot of scratches from previous owner. Best used with small micro fiber wax buffers that you can get 2-3 to a pack from Advance/Auto Zone. Sorry for going off the OP mods.
Seriously....Is this an ad?
P.s
If you scratched your new nexus 5 already you are the people who buy the big ugly otter mofo cases XD

This seems like a terrible solution for one main reason, it will completely ruin the oleophobic coating on the screen. I am a car guy myself and swear by Meguiars for headlight and paint restoration. However, I would NEVER use this stuff on my phone...

Im sure if we coated the screen every day it would, using it once a year once every few months in minor amounts isnt going to do anything. ive use it on alot of my phones over the last 2 years with no issues.

It's not like liquid sand paper. Not even close. It has a resin compound that FILLS IN the scratches. If it were like liquid sand paper, it'd just make more scratches witch you'd then have to buff out.

Way to bump a 2 year old post to post wrong information.
It is like liquid sand paper.
It has a higher abrasive index than some of megs' professional series polishing compounds.
It's an abrasive period. It just so happens to also have fillers in it.
