[Q] Convert Chinese rom into English? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
There is an awesome build of MIUI GB that is rock solid and stable. It is probably the fastest build of MIUI GB I have seen so far. The issue is that it is all in Chinese. I could set the language to English and push the eri.xml file to get English displaying.
I have a few nagging issues:
Dictionary not working correctly with the native GB keyboard.
Handful of apps in Chinese (sidekick.apk, calendar app, monitoring app)
Some apps do not appear in Market (perhaps due to region setting)
I would like to get my feet wet with converting roms, but not sure where to start.

You might try hitting up swiperat to see if he may be able to help. He has been working a 4.0 version in the developers section.
You get this project worked out maybe you can take a stab at this one after.

Pinyin with hardware keyboard support needed

I want to be able to input Simplified Chinese - but I don't want an entirely Chinese OS. After some searching I've found these (I'm not sure if I remember the names correctly):
CE-Star - doesn't work well at all. For me, at least.
"Ask China_FEPNo5" - mysterious thing, but it does let me input everything using stylus. No predictive input. (EDIT: I think the credit goes to asukal)
PlumSIP No. 5 - takes a lot of space on the screen, but no hardware keyboard support.
There should be something built-in in the Chinese ROMs, and a lot of cooks starting with Dopod ROMs must have stripped it down - so can anyone give me an idea of where to search?

Thank you. This forum required a registration to view, and I found a discussion of yet another ROM build. However, download links simply do not work.
What I hoped for would be some information about where is the IME itself stored in ROM... now I can only compare that and the stock one, but there are too many differences, I'm afraid.

I think it's a 2.0.1, not 2.1.
This might be a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway.
Does the 2.0.1 AOSP have facebook and google sync?
Yes it does sync.
Its really a great ROM, im using right now. there are some minor bugs and hoping it will get fixed.
Yes, I agree. It's the best post 1.5 ROM that's currently out there. It's indeed a 2.0.1 ROM. And I think too that the standard Android look without any HTC apps and customization works a lot better. Exchange sync for example is much quicker than on the HTC versions. The whole email app is far more responsive and easier to use.
Current bugs are that it cannot play video, camera limited to 3mp and some other small issues (no speaker sound after disconnecting headphones). It's not perfect yet, but fits my needs.
I wrote this to HTCPedia already. Only reposting here:
This is very good ROM, but I've got another issue. Is it possible to change text encoding for SMS? I am using my language (CZ) with our national letters for example: ěščřž?????ů. When I send SMS with these, recipient got nonsence group of symbols. When I write: "Čeština je překr?sn? jazyk" which means: "Czech language is a beutiful language." recipient got something like this: "?Σ@(Π Σ@[email protected]¤?? @[email protected]@@P? Θ@ @@?Δ[email protected]@V?Δ? [email protected]@[email protected]Δ@[email protected][email protected]". Czech language for SMS isn't problem in original SenseROM. Could it be repaired?
If you only having problems with this rom than you have to go to the developer.

SlideIT Keyboard ½-Off

SlideIT Keyboard is currently half off in the market for New Years. I doubt it beats Swype, but add it currently doesn't work on tablets, I bit the bullet and bought it. Well worth the expense at $4.
It's working on tablets

Thanks for this thread.
I actually acquired the SlideIT for my Samsung Galaxy i9000 mobile device & have a very strange issue with it.
Since yesterday, I have been using the "h*ck*d" version I found on Applanet and it was running greatly - so, as I was very satisfied with it I decided to support the developer and buy the official version
Well - I uninstalled my Applanet version, bought, downloaded and installed the official Market version - .. but it would not run properly.
Although the default language is set as "English", whenever I swype an English term, the keyboard suddenly comes up only with "??" instead of a proper word suggestion. But it used to work with the other version I had from Applanet.
* I have checked the settings, no other Keyboard is ticked
* I have checked the language setting yes - English is set as "Primary Language"
* I thought I might have to install the English language pack, but it is not available in the Market how come? German, Dutch, etc. everything there, but no English
Anyone else has experienced similar or different troubles with SlideIT (official version)?
I'd be thankful for any help.
I got the SlideIT keyboard working fine on the Archos 101. Though fine doesn't mean "without issues." First, the keys on the right side while in landscape mode are somewhat shaved off. Second...the keyboard is FRICKEN HUGE! I mean seriously, it is ridiculously huge...like the clown shoes of on-screen keyboards.
I think I will keep pestering the people over on the Swype forums to make their keyboard work on tablets. LOL
I have used Swype for a long time on my pocket pc but haven't been as happy with it on the Archos 70. I saw this video on youtube comparing Swype and FlexT9. I have to say I prefer T9 and the speech to text works surprising good. Try it for yourself it was around five bucks. I can't post the link so do a search on youtube FlexT9.

[Q] Greek SMS with 70 characters limit

Hello everyone!
I have the usual problem with the system limiting my SMSs to 70 characters when using the Greek alphabet.... Someone suggested on the Smart Keyboard forum (http://www.dexilog.com/smartkeyboard/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=970&p=4484#p4484) that HTC has solved this. But for me, the problem persists in a weird way:
-Of course I type in all caps
-If I use any letters that are specific to the Greek alphabet (Ψ,Ω,Δ,Λ,Σ etc) the limit stays at 160 characters
-If I type a letter that is common to the latin alphabet it drops to 70 characters!
It's strange, but I haven't seen much talk about this issue here, though it was a big topic in WinMo discussions (WM has the same problem).
So:
-Can someone verify whether or not HTC has fixed this?
-Does anyone have a suggestion?
Using RevolutionHD 2.09 with 1.72.405.3 .
Thanks!
T
Anyone?.... I also tried the IME mod v27 to no avail...
Goodmorning my friend,
Unfortunately my friend you have to use the ACE HELLAS solution for this, which is a "top secret" info, they will never help you out with this.
Had the same problem with my previous phone (HTC Legend), and ended up using SlideIT with Greek add-on, which I remember that worked for SMS (ofcourse always caps). Give it a try and let me know.
In case you really need Greek, and you are willing to come back to ACE HELLAS stock, I can Nandroid mine when it comes back from service and upload the ROM for you.

Good morning Kostantinos,
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply... I can't believe we're in the same s#!+ with Ace Hellas once more - it was the exact same situation some 4 years ago when I got my TytnII! Of course this is not the sign of a serious company (speaking both for HTC and ACE) since the fix should have found its way upwards and be included in the stock HTC ROMs.... but I digress.
I'm running a custom ROM, so I wouldn't want to go back to a stock one, but I guess that this could be rectified by just grabbing the relevant apk(s)?
Also, thanks for the SlideIt kb. I had tried it, but didn't remember it fixes the problem - will try again.
Thanks again, and have a great day,
Themis
I will let you know regarding APKs after I root my DHD, as soon as I receive it back from service (the blur picture left part camera issue).
Until then, you can also "dig" information and try the new Swype beta for DHD as well, but I dont think it supports Greek at the moment (not sure). If I find anything I will send you a link.
Yes, the problem is really frustrating, but at least the WM problem was a single HTC_ime.cab file, which worked in almost all devices. In Android it is a real pain in the arse!!! That is why I still stick with the stock ROM.
After 3 years of upgrading Android OSs, this problem should have been fixed generically, from the box.
OK, you can try here... NOT tested, but you have chances to work
Thanks - I'll take you up on your offer, so please do forgive me if I bother you with a PM in a few days
Swype doesn't have Greek - at least didn't have the last time I tried it, so it's a no-go, but SlideIt is good enough I think - it's just that it's totally different and i happen to like the HTC Kyboard
Was it an IME cab for WM? I seem to remember it was a keyboard cab. And it seems to be the same here - there are messaging apps (call me Handcent) that solve it with the stock keyboard, but there are also third-party kb's that solve it with the stok messaging app! So it seems it can be fixed two-ways... If I could help in any way with digging into the ROM please do let me know!
Oh, just got a notification about your second post in a row - wow, it includes Greek! Lemme grab it, quick
Thanks once more mate, it's strange how not more people discuss this issue (time to visit the ACE Hellas fora again after several years I think! ).
Cheers
T

Ahhh yes I remembered the problem with Swype: it FCs whenever you switch languages... so kinda useless
[edit] and, also, it doesn't solve the 70-char issue, it's exactly the same. Gonna try SLideIt.
[Edit2] ..aaand SlideIt does the same as well.

My dear friend can you send me the HTC_ime.cab file or tell me where can I find it? I have the exact same problem with my wm6.5 phone! I don't want to use the solution with the remapped keyboards!
Number of Characters has to do with Unicode or GSM Alphabet?

Want IME Japanese input on Jelly Bean Rom

I live in Japan and own a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I'm running on the Docomo network.
I've rooted my phone. I have Android 4.0.4.
I started to check out the different ROMS and decided to use the Jelly Bean ROM I found on galaxynexusroot.com called:
aokp-jelly-bean-rom-build-1-for-galaxy-nexus-gsmverizonsprint
2 problems so far, the first and main problem for me is that there is no longer a choice to use the IME Japanese keyboard that came with my GNEx. I need this keyboard because I have email in Japanese. I've seen some apps, but the inability to change to kanji characters makes them useless for me.
The second problem, when I go into my contacts so that I can sync my gmail to it and get all my contacts back on, it won't. It will say that it can't make a secure connection and it will stop. I can run it fine when creating it in the settings area, but that won't allow me to import my contacts.
I am new, I have checked, but I have a feeling there aren't many Japanese users on here. Hopefully I'm wrong...
There are plenty of Japanese IMEs in the market I'm sure, I know Google has one of their own. What do you mean about the inability to change to kanji? That doesn't make sense, Japanese IME without kanji would be useless, the Google IME shows kanji being input in the screenshots.

I saw a few of the IME applications and the remarks made that it was useless for the users since there was an inability to change from hiragana to kanji. I just saw the Google version and I'll see how well that works on my stock ROM where I already have a Japanese IME that comes with the ROM (Does that make sense, I'm still getting use to this). Several languages were available in the Jelly Bean ROM but none were Japanese. I'd like it if it were available right there in the ROM. I guess I'm just not sure if this is something creators of new ROMS remove or if it's something that has to be placed in.
Yeah, the CJK IMEs are part of localized ROMs but they aren't in the ROMs that come with US phones so that's probably why they aren't in most custom ROMs. It makes sense too, the IMEs take up space. I use Google's Pinyin input for Chinese, but I wouldn't want the Japanese IME taking up space on my phone since I wouldn't have a use for it.
Using Google's one. I don't like the design but it works really well, especially with people and places' names.
BTW, Google translate supports hand writing for Japanese. Might come handy sometimes, but you need internet for that.
