Research from Kantar WorldPanel on Tuesday showed Android gaining share strongly in most of seven major markets - Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States - in the 12 weeks to mid April.
...
Windows' share in Germany more than doubled to 6 percent over the past year, and climbed to 3-4 percent in Britain, France, Italy and the United States.
These gains came at the expense of Nokia's Symbian platform and Canadian BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, the biggest market share losers. RIM's share in the U.S. market dropped to just 3 percent from 9 percent a year earlier.

We do not know if that is all Windows platforms, or only Windows Phone. Previous share numbers put Windows phone at 2% so maybe that is only Windows Phone. But no matter how you spin it, Nokia has made some kind of impact with the Lumia series. And the Germany numbers would not include the Lumia 900 either.
Windows Phone is gaining momentum! One day, sometime in the future, the forum will no longer have to be ridiculed for poor sales numbers. I wonder what will be the next reason why not to own a Windows Phone?

So is iPhone.
I'm not trying to be illogical, But the experience I have with my window phone (Mozart 7) is far better than what I had with any Android phone.
Although Windows Phone still has a long way to go (mainly apps in marketplace are not comparable to Apple/Android market figures) But I think WP will be a real competitor for iPhone/Android in near future.

That's it, sarcasm that is also, most people don't know that Android isn't really open source: you can't access the repositories on which gdevs are working. Also, nobody ever gives a crap about bug reports/feature requests, and most issue are left pending and unaddressed. The AOSP project is ran in a not so opened source after all: the code shared is generally partial and you have no access whatsoever to what is actually worked on. Chrome, for example, is instead an open source project, and is actually ran as such. Too bad it sucks because it's a resource whore, despite being probably the fastest guy in town. However I agree, most of my favourite programs are closed source too. Woops, this is very off topic btw

Interesting stuff in the comments from your link:
(Reuters) – Nokia launched two low-end cellphones on Tuesday, aiming to regain its footing in emerging markets.
Operating system: Symbian Series 40
Windows Phone market share is so tiny, Nielsen doesn’t even list it “The bad news for Windows Phone market share continues: In a recent report, Windows Phone market share was so small in the U.S. that the well-known research firm Nielsen didn’t even bother to break out its usage,” Preston Gralla reports for Computerworld. Could Linux still usurp Windows Phone as Nokia’s saviour?

Elsop told a group of engineers in Berlin last year that the goal is once again to “find that next big thing that blows away Apple, Android, and everything we’re doing with Microsoft right now, and makes it irrelevant – all of it. So go for it, without having to worry about saving Nokia’s rear end in the next 12 months. I’ve taken off the handcuffs.” The product in development is known as Meltemi, a Linux-based OS, which was referenced in a memo leaked to the The Wall Street Journal last year.
Honestly I don't even care that much about WP7 anymore...I mean (don't get me wrong) I don't want it to die because I really like it and it's the perfect fit for me now. What really matters to me now tho is that with this Lumia phone I'm in love with Nokia back again. I don't even care about apps anymore, as far as I have a functional phone with a good browser and a twitter client I'm more than fine. If Nokia keeps making WP devices with Lumia like quality and above then good, I'll buy them, if Nokia starts making N9 like Linux based devices I'll buy them as well, maybe I'd like them even more. Just gimme Nokia phones please, I'm hooked. Hopefully I'm not the only one...

Hey guys, just came here as I've been using an LG Optimus 7 for about a week now. Now I don't want to get into any arguments, I just want to share my thoughts.
I personally am not a fan of WP7 (actually that's a massive understatement). I have no doubt that for some users it's just fine, but not me. I'm an Android user and the reason I'm using this phone right now is because I'm in between phones and this is a work phone.
For me, there are too many UI and UX idiosyncrasies for me to be able to like WP7. The tiles are an interesting approach, but on a small screen device it fails. It feels very claustrophobic for me; as if you're looking at a large sheet of paper but only have a small window to look through.
The lock screen leaves something to be desired also. I'm disappointed that a pin password is the only way to password protect your phone. I miss pattern unlock.
The keyboard, while good at autocorrect, cannot compare to Swype, which I also miss dearly. I absolutely loath tapping on a virtual keyboard now that I've been using Swype for over a year.
Please take no offence to this but if I had to describe WP7 it would be a very advanced feature phone, or a very simple smartphone. And by "simple" I don't mean easy to use, I mean limited functionality. Random example: In the browser, when I find a phone number online, I cannot just click on it and choose to automatically call it like on Android. Furthermore, I cannot even copy the text on the website and paste it into the dialing app like on Android. So I'm forced to either memorize the number or jot it down on a piece of paper and then recite it in the dialing app. Not very "smartphone-ish". People talk about how Android is only for "advanced users" but in all seriousness Android does most of, if not all, the simple things much more intuitively than any other device (IMO).
If I had to say one thing that my WP7 device did well, was Bluetooth connection and syncing with my F150's radio. But then again, that's a Microsoft Sync product, so I would expect no less. Edit: Oh, and voice commands. It actually does voice commands fairly nicely without any extra software.
But I would like to hear from everyone else, explicitly what they like about WP7 over iPhone or Android (we're not including Blackberry, why bother.).

That's why there are multiple OS. It is impossible to make an OS that EVERYONE will love. Most people who sit down and look at all the major OS interfaces agree that the Windows Phone interface is clean and easy to read compared to others.

Billions of people have lived just fine with pin unlock. Furthermore I see no reason why a future iteration of Windows Phone wouldn't have pattern unlock. A whole new OS is about to drop in <1 year. At this stage there is no way of knowing what Windows Phone will and will not have in 6-8 months.

Windows Phone is a newer operating system and functionality is being added incrementally. A whole new OS is going to drop in <1 yr. Your post is going to look silly in a matter of months. I like the Windows Phone OS. I like the hardware. I like the fact that my Lumia 900 works smoothly out of the box with no tweaks. I don't have to brag about how many cores it has because it doesn't matter. When I see an Andriod phone with twice the number of cores doing its stutter and lag routine I don't feel bad for the owner.

My Android phone (the one being repaired) has only a single core and is smooth as butter. This whole "my phone is smoother than yours" flack is nothing but non-sense. This phone I've been using has lagged on me plenty of times and I've even had plenty of iPhones lag on me also. Pointless argument.
Edit: This guy is exactly the type of person I was trying to avoid. All I wanted was the opinions of WP7 enthusiasts as to why they like their platform of choice. Not some 15 year old that can only resort to verbal attacks.

The whole "core" thing was me just making fun of the Andriod conversations I've accidentally stumble across. This forum is littered with them. Windows Phone just takes a different approach to the whole smartphone thing in a number of ways. I wouldn't expect a committed Android user to pick up on the differences let alone appreciate them in a handful of days especially if he was involuntarily forced to use Windows Phone.

A Windows Phone 7 forum is an odd place to hide out from Windows Phone users.
Bottom line, A whole new OS is going to drop in <1yr. You have just wasted your time and our time critiquing a bunch of issues that may very well be moot in a matter of months. Unlike you we didn't have our Windows Phones forced on us for a few days. We made a conscious decision after evaluating our options to buy the phone we felt would best suit our needs for the next 2 years.
I don't like Andriod and I don't like iOS. But I don't go to those forums and start telling everyone who owns the phone my opinion. A lot of the decision regarding what phone someone ultimately ends up using is subjective. All OSes have pros and cons. I could easily cherry pick a few pros and cons and post over in the Andriod forum. I don't and there is a reason for that.

And in general there is absolutely no problem with that in the Windows Phone forum.
I can see why Metro UI would not be appealing to everyone. I personally find it to be less attractive than what Android can be with all the custom roms, but more useable than any OS on the market. It is the perfect blend of simplicity and functionality and i have owned an iPhone and owned/used quite a few different Android phones from different OEMs.
Sitizenx is being a little blunt. Well alot blunt But I want to let you know where Sit is coming from:
"Windows Phone is dead"
"Marketshare/Sales are pathetic"
"Apps are missing/inferior/overpriced"
"Hardware is a joke"
It is that last one that is the motivation behind his self-pleasuring retort. Out of curiousity, which single core Android phone did you use that was smooth? Nexus S? i am sure there are smooth droids out there, but there are quite a few that just are not and it is laughable based on the hardware that goes into some of there phones.
But it is quite okay for you to not like Windows Phone. Some of your issues can be resolved, some also apply to the iPhone (swype, pattern unlock).
Btw, that borrowed data parsing feature to recognize emails/numbers and pick the appropriate task is what got HTC banned
This whole bashing on Windows Phone, or iOS or whatever is such a waste of time and energy. I can think of a dozen things off the bat to be more constructive with. We really need to get off this "fanboy" mentality.

That's a patent issue. Microsoft is forced to leave this feature out of WP7. You can thank Apple for that.
And why should be a pattern unlock better/safer? I find it easier to memorize a pattern when someone unlocks his phone.

Just with reference to your example there... that is not a limitation of Windows Phone... that's a limitation in the default settings for Canada specifically. I'm in Canada with a Samsung Focus (also on Telus) and I can click on phone and street addresses in the web browser to have them open in the dialer or map program on Windows Phone. You just have to go into "Settings/Region+Language" and set your "Region format" to "English (United States)". You should then have clickable links for telephone numbers and street addresses. While you're there, change your "Browser and search language" to "English (United States)" to enable local scout in Canada.
The limitation on copy/pasting a number into the dialer is a legitimate gripe - copying the number is easy, but there is no paste option from the dialer.

The simple ui, the difference of the ui, and the huge microsoft stamp on it. its lacking in hardware and app developement, but apparently folks just accept the shortcomings, or don't care.
Id imagine working the price of a phone into a ford vehicle wouldn't be difficult, surprised it hasn't happened yet.
Sitizen's comments revolve around accusations of androidfanism and the future release to be expected. Unfortunately, neither are relevant today.
The sales information is interesting though. Apparently china likes it, or there is some promotion prompting sales with very cheap devices, dunno, I don't live there.
I'm still not seeing any wp7 devices around town, bars, etc. I've never seen one in a motorcycling buddies hand. Those are alllll iphones or the latest android, for the obvious mapping and navigation reasons.

I am sure everyone now realises how so many critical features are lacking from a phone. It was released 4 months back, but even after 2 long years of wait, it seems to be a 'pre-mature' release.
A 12 year old boy knows that silent mode, copy/paste and multitasking is like a basic thing, and now its almost 5 months since its release and their has been zero updates.
One thing I dont realise is, does it really took microsoft 2 long years to build WP7, what is built in it except the front screen?? All other features which should be in a phone are lacking. And all other interface has been ripped from Zune. So if it takes 2 years for a company to build the front screen of a brick phone with zero options, they should have just contracted SPB Software House Co. and they would have dont it in 6 months and not 2 years.
The Windows Phone 7 team isn't that big actually. Besides, the iPhone idea began in 2005 and took 2 years to come to life.
Of course, I agree that the lack of update so far is disturbing.
They're basic things but not necessary things. My WP7 gets along much better than any iphone or android without those things but of course I dont use mine as a business device. As a media device it is second to none, I used android for 2 years and never once used c&p or put my phone on anything lower than vibrate. As for multi-tasking if apps were built the way they were supposed to be then they wouldn't need it. They have showed vodeos of how some apps were built to go back to the exact same point when hitting the back button. This is likely to keep it from running slow and becoming unresponsive. Sort of like android which is what I will always consider a "brick-phone."

How many more of these idiotic threads do we have to have??? Can the mods close this down? "All other features which should be in a phone are lacking", "a brick phone", how many arguments based upon false statements do we have to tolerate? After years in this forum and intelligent discussions with many members, some with opposite viewpoints, this forum has degenerated to this level? This is really sad and a sad day for this forum. Free speech, I understand, this level of speech I don't.
You can say somebody didn't use a search button and didn't post this in existing threads.
But at the same time when will you finally understand that the amount of THE SAME complaints is also a measure of a real WP7 reception among customers?
Better ask MS to push any update soon than moan about people who spend their cash and get disappointed by some MS logic.

This is complete lie and disgusting excuse for not improving products.
This is indeed some kind of racism.
In fact the truth is complely opposite.
As I work with very many people through the year, I can say I have my own personal survey regarding this, with "average" consumer.
Most of people who use any kind of smartphone are aware of these things, they just don't have enough interest to voice them in public.
Underestimating people and treating them like mass of idiots is disgusting.
Stop this lie.
remember this is just the first release.. sure, it has taken them a long time to make it, but that doesnt mean that the time was wasted.. Im pretty impressed with the amount of speed and fluidity MS has been able to squeeze out of our 1ghz devices
considering the animations present (even android is laggy if not overclocked)
copy paste will be released as an update, which isnt a problem coz remember this is a new OS and not that many people will just dive into it on the first release.
as for multitasking, consider this.. a smartphone isnt like a desktop/laptop pc, only one app can be displayed on the screen.. why would you need another app fully running on the background taking up all the cpu resources while it could just be kept on standby and maybe just part of it could be running (notifications part)
this is the main reason why android and winmo 6.5 were slow in the first place (android wanted to use the same idea but just messed up, thats why 3rd party task managers are there to help out)
so at the end of the day, we hate the new OS because we're used to the old one.. which is really not cool

Actually, Android don't do that. Yes, they keep using RAM in background. BUT! In Linux systems RAM is not managed the way they are in Windows.
Windows = The more free memory you have, better, faster.
Linux = Doesn't matter how much free memory you have. It will run smoothly.
So Android do the same thing. Whenever you have free memory, it will keep the App running. When you need more RAM, it will decide which app is useless or less useful and close.
Battery is not affected too.
Under the hood, Android is pretty smart, actually. I just don't like the "above the hood". The widget things and editable home is useful, tough.

This is just dumb excuse. And not true.
Symbian UIQ devices back in 2007 could multitask without any slowdown.
My computer doesn't slow down even if I heavily multitask.
There are dozens of scenarios when we need it. Becuse current solution leads to idiotic reloading/rebooting apps and processes.
The simplest is when I'm in the Facebook app and get sms and start a short sms chat. When I finnish instead of continuing what I was doing there, I have to reboot everything and go through all the process. It's a crap.
At least IE behaves normally and Word.

And all other interface has been ripped from Zune. So if it takes 2 years for a company to build the front screen of a brick phone with zero options, they should have just contracted SPB Software House Co. and they would have dont it in 6 months and not 2 years.

Why does is have to have those features though? I like Android, don't get me wrong. But people expect this OS to live by Android standards, when it doesn't need to. It's annoying to see the same thing over and over.

Buhahaha! Great one.
Because it's basics!
With this kind of attitude MS has no chance to do anything with this OS.
I just hope they don't think your way.
People expect things because a very high standard is already established.
Did you live in a cave last few years?!
The same was with processor speeds, capactive screens, big cameras.
Do you release today a smartphone with a 1,3mpx camera "because you live in a different standard"? Lol, man.
To little to late? Don't make me laugh.
WP7 launches with:
- Smooth and intuitive interface.
- Microsoft Office Integration.
- Xbox Live integration
- Zune with Zune Pas integration
- Fastest growing marketplace ever
- Fastest boot time of any OS
- Windows Live Integration
- IE7 Port from Windows
- Smart Multitasking foundation with dehydrating applications
First Update for WP7 next month brings:
- C&P support
- Better memory management for faster app launch
- Drivers for newer Qualcomm chipsets
- CDMA Antenna Support
- Phone Backups on Zune
Fall Update Mango brings:
- IE9 port from Windows
- Silverlight & HTML5 support in browser
- Trident 5 Rendering Engine
- Far Eastern Language Support
- More Unspecified Features
I fail to see how an OS with such promise can be too late in a smartphone war that isn't even close to having half of the cell phone market. User bases for smartphones are expected to double within the next few years so I guess the naysayers should tell them all that they have to choose iOS, Android, or RIM devices because smaller platforms like WP7, WebOS, and MeeGO aren't allowed to compete.
With a little correction:
All those dates and specified updates are RUMOURS. Not a "promise"
Nowhere officially confirmed, anywhere.
Backstage forums, which are nice, give no info about it either,
neither any official MS info channel.
So we can agree with you above once WE SEE IT.
Now we know nothing, or - a little.

Free speech, I understand, this level of speech I don't.

I think you're right with that statement. Just because all the owners of a smartphone out there don't talk about the OS on their phones doesn't mean that they don't understand the topic. I mean, I know a 60 year old man who has never been interested in such things before and who isn't interested a the moment, but he does know what Android, WP7 and iOS are...
AND: WP7 has got a silent mode! Or are you too dumb to turn off the ringing?
Most of people I know using smartphones are pretty much informed about features.
They don't use forums. But they are really disappointed by many things. This applies to all OS'es.
For instance, iPhone is faulty, not solid product. Besides people carrying this like a baby, most of users have power-button **** up...... Never read about it on any tech news portal. Etc......

Actually, the NoDo update is pretty much confirmed. C&P was showed at CES. The codename was confirmed by Charlie Kindel from MS. Paul Thurrott is more than a reliable source of anything MS so I'm willing to bet he's right especially since all of the above features are supported in WCE7.
If you look at my previous posts I am been a regular basher of WP7 for last 4 months.. but now that I bought one and see everything in it, I think its an excellent interface and a great piece of innovative technology that surpasses Android and Iphone at many levels. I dont even have the Nodo update yet on my phone, but I still love this phone more than anything other I have ever used. Great piece of technology, Zune Pass, Marketplace and all Microsoft services run very smooth and just perfect.
I love how quickly I can switch back from Application to another with such a ease. Its great for Multi-tasking. Microsoft has also added little things which makes its very comfortable to use, like when I plug out the earphones, the music player automatically stops and dosents star blaring in phone speakers.
The proximity sensors on Samsung Omnia 7 works great with no fail. So no more of me accidentally taping on screen while on call.. its very handy, every touch phone should have it.
Everything on Windows Phone is smooth and bug free.
It has made buying so easy by billing it straight to my AtnT bill, that I no longer bother to get a 'crack' file and just buy the software if I like the trial. Gone is the software piracy problem, it will kill websites like ppcwarez...
Listening, exploring and buying music is such a nice experience, nothing like that exists in Windows Mobile and could not have been implemented using that platform.
Microsoft did a great work on Windows Phone and I have found new respect for people working their. Congratulations and Thank You.
PS - If only I could disable the Search Button sometimes and had a little longer battery life it would be great.
The shiny will wear off soon enough.
Both have their place, but WM is a bit more flexible and more universally useful ATM, especially an HTC Sense WM device like the HD2.
IMO.
what i liked about windows mobile is whats preventing me from saying wp7 is better.
I know the ui is much more smoother and lag free but i miss being able to wifi tether, use my device as a usb mass storage device, and being able to download albums, rar files, and everything from the web to my storage card on the go and update my library all without the use of a computer, i dont like how wp7 is dependent upon the computer like the iphone is. And i like being able to use the file explorer on windows mobile to manage my files.
i love wp7 and im getting one as soon as verizon launches it but those are some key features that are slightly holding wp7 back

Then you need to remember one thing, Microsoft has upgraded WM 6.5 though several years. So what do you expect on the OS that has just been published for about few months?
Now is time for Microsoft to listen to their user and consider about it. Mango Update look quite bright to me...

Agreed... I saw YouTube vids on the first looks at WP7 and thought it looked dull and boring, but after flashing my HD2, the phone is now slick, smooth, alive... I notice everything I do is quicker...
I show my iGroan and Haemorrhoid mates the bing search, pizza, pick a store, get directions... Blows them away!
hungry81 is right in what he's saying.
If you make a new OS, its all about to add new stuff, and update the old stuff, but without quitting anything!!!!
Like windows did, take a look at it, in Win7 we actually have DOS, and the very old win95 Theme, with a very good backward compatibility.
Thats a good job, and I was hoping that microsoft would go on with this positive actitude in mobile devices.
But no, they quit almost everything, everything that made WM so great and different from any other dumbass users OS like Iphone and Blackberry.
And you can't say that's only because the system is new, because as I read in this forum, WP7 is based on windows CE like WM, so nothing revolutionary.
you absolutely can't give props to the marketplace!
With my WM, I go to the internet site or eMule and download every App I need, without having problems to find them with very much good freeware.
With the Marketplace, almost every App has a price, maybe little, but I don't like to pay for something that in the previous platform was for free.
So why does WP7 fail in almost every aspect??? I'm shure, its because they want to stop piracy, so they quit almost every bridge to it (I can't find any other explanation).
No filesystem, no registry editor, no custom setups and even no flash in IE.
Now the biggest question: why do I own a WP7???? The answer is, because Iphone is to expensive and It sucks even more, Blackberry and nokia are not made for such multimedia, and Android, its more like a fashion, maybe its here today but not tomorrow, and WM 6,5 is no longer supported by new apps.
I hope, WP7 will start to live, will get better, and more user-friendly with better Apps support, downloadable directly from the internet site.
My biggest fear, is that what happened to WM, will happen to our main computer, in Windows 8

You know what happens to companies that make products that have all these wonderful features that nerds/geeks/techies love but no one else does?
I guess it is to be expected on a geek website that many members are upset with Windows Mobile going from a toolbox to a box of crayons, but somewhere along the way you should be forward-thinking enough to see it had to be done.
When it all boils down to it, in general iOS is better than all the other mobile OSes. Not because it can be more or do more, but because it is the most popular. Imagine if iOS came on several different handsets. So it is not for every specific person but in general it is well suited for most people.
Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'. Microsoft moved on, and I think everyone else should. Some people come into the Windows Mobile forum on a daily basis only intent on bashing the system. Microsoft wants Windows Phone to be the next iOS, not the next Android. Restrictions down to the number of physical buttons, no intended removable storage, and Zune dependent.
And you know the writing is on the wall for Android. What happens when more and more new devices come out with locked bootloaders? What happens when Google starts to tighten up the controls in the system? Business is about being a copycat. 10% innovation, 90% follow the leader.

but I'm shure, its for some anti-piracy reason...
One of the reasons why this WP7 is not selling so well
Is it is limited in many areas.
another thing that I didn't mention, is that everyone is saying that WP7 is so easy to use.
I don't like that interface.
I'll tell you why.
I updated from WM6.1 to WM6.5 and I must say, I hated that start menu so much that I went back to WM6.1
Ok, perhaps it's fingerfriendly, for some unsensible fingers.
but I had a hard and frustrating time, finding my apps and setups.
That's because there is no folder rule, something that made so popular windows OS
Same problem has Iphone and Android, and finally WP7.
It may be easy to use if yo have less than 10 apps, but imagine having 30 apps and scrolling like a fool to find your app, that's mixed with the other phone icons.
I'm not an Apps fan, and I always try to have less apps than possible.
But I like it organized, with some folder-gerachy.
Android its scary, its desktop is full of apps icons one time I was 5 minutes searching for the Cam without finding anything. so I let it.
I know everyone is thinking the same, and I don't know why there's people who say that WP7 is cool and the new wave of mobile-OS are the future.
Maybe they have to give a sense to their spent money, or to the fact, that possibly there will be no go back to previous cool features and improvements of WM6.1

I dont think so, I think the reason why maybe its not selling so well is simply because many people are afraid to switch to their trusted Android or Iphone platform to something which is relativly new. But trust me, once they Windows Phone 7 Interface they will never go back.. I have never owned one Iphone or Android phone, but all my friends have them and they all borrow it to me for weeks because I am more tech saavy than them and I load usefull apps for them , so I pretty much know and have tested Iphone and Android at length.. but WP7 is nothing like that..
All my friends who borrowed me their Android and Iphones before now see my WP7 and the smoothness in WP7 and they all just want to instantly switch.. One just need to see it for more than 20 mins in a showroom and actually use the device for a week to see how good WP7 is compared to WM6.5, Iphone or Android.

Well definitely there will be many users loving WP7 look and feel.
For me it was opposite - I fell in love once I unboxed it but after 3 months I was having enough of limitations plus honestly UI of WP7 is dead boring after 3 months, some tiles are so horribly unappealing. It seems sometimes like a sketch not finished UI.
But this is taste and individual feeling. Many users will catch it. People I know were not appealed at all. So it's very individual.
And I have no idea in what sense WP7 is "so good" compared to Android or iOS.
I didn't find any real reason.

There is little if any innovation in WP7. People Hub as already done in TouchWiz. All of the Social integration is pretty much same ole same ole. Apple already had GameCenter. Apple has iPod (i.e. Zune) and you could get All-You-Can-Eat music from services like Rhapsody on other platforms.
Office isn't innovative because ThinkFree and other apps have comparable functionality and integration in other platforms. Also, Office has been in Windows Mobile since 2002 or so... The functionality of Outlook/Office going from WM to WP7 has actually been downgraded quite a lot. For example, WP7 doesn't support Exchange Tasks and the calendar is, IMO, worse...
Nothing great about Push Notifications which are worse and more volatile than any other platform that offers them.
Tiles and Live Tiles are just Widgets with a different look and feel.
Microsoft didn't really innovate any much moving from WM to WP7, and the base OS is still Windows CE. They used Silverlight as a way to decouple the UX from the base OS, but they released it before it was finished (hence why there are 1.5k APIs keeping apps off the platform coming with Mango).
How well WP7 does depends solely on how Android and iOS develop going into the future.
Nokia will help MS but Google has way more manufacturers and Apple will continue to do well building their own handset. Also, with Nokia somewhat abandoning Symbian a lot of their users will jump to Android because WP7 does not have functionality on par with BB/WM/Symbian to allow them to migrade decently form Symbian to WP7. Nokia cannot do that without reworking a bit of the OS and I doubt Microsoft will want them to diverge so far from the reference implementation.
I think in 2010 they lost bigtime because they didn't live up to the hype. The carriers still have as much control over WP7 as they do with Android, and their update system is still only on par with Android and much worse than iOS. In addition, the launch hardware is rather poor and with the i5 coming out soon after Mango, and Android Manufacturers pushing the button (not to mention Google making some pretty good changes in their OS latesly - free Voice/Video Chat in Google Talk?! We don't even have a WLM and it's not slated to even come with Mango!) it will be hard for them to persuade switches. In addition to that, the pitiful state of RTM WP7 has already made them a laughing stock on many tech blogs and among users. They should have waited, IMO.
People who have Android phones won't tell their friends to get WP7 devices because of Google Talk/Services. People with iOS devices will likely push that. People with Blackberries will recommend Blackberries because of BBM, etc. People with WP7 devices are generally on the fence and many are lamenting the purchase. The OS is so functionally thin, and even will still be compared to iOS/Android with Mango, that it's really hard to enjoy it. Android Manufacturers are already getting better with Updates (Samsung leading the pack, suprisingly), so that is already no longer a reason to go with WP7...
A good smartphone will not make you feel like you are hampered because you upgraded from a different OS, and a good smartphone will not force you to double fist two smartphones because it's lacking in so much functionality as to be unusable without a different device to fill in the gaps.
WM had usability issues, but it was a complete smartphone OS.
And BTW, it had nothing to do with it having a decade of development. Even from day one it was never possible to call WM functionally thin compared to anything on the market (Symbian, Blackberry, Palm, etc.). The actual phones/devices running it was a different story.
And as a business user WP7 is practically useless. It isn't even worth consideration. I'd get a Blackberry or Symbian Anna device, instead...

yes you will regret it , if you still want these features :
1- Bluetooth file transfer
2- ability to make folder
3 - icon view
4- rooting device
5- backing up ROM
6- backing up apps
7- much much more free apps and games
8- if you google around , you find paid apps for free
9- widgets
and alot more , but these are the most important features that are missing in WP7
If you think I helped , please hit thanks

Who said? Most sane WP7 users can acknowledge its not perfect but why is it this forum is filled mainly with threads criticizing WP7, mostly from people who dont use it? If they dont like it, why not post in forums of the OS they do like?
Thats the problem, this thread will be filled with posts by the usual haters spouting the same BS. By this time, 1 year later, shouldnt they have moved on to the platform that suits them? Yet any good point of WP7 is shouted down and discarded. You say people here arent ready to judge WP7 honestly, the haters are just as guilty of not being able to be honest and admit any positive in WP7.

Why are people keep comparing a 5+ yr old OS to a 1 yr OS is beyond me. We all know WP still have some growing to do. The rate it's growing is alot faster than we all anticipated.
I didn't mean to start any trouble... I really am just curious. I read a lot on engaget of windows 7 phones being efficient. My main question is what I want to do. I guess I'll stick to android and get the prime, and in 2 years rethink my options.

Listen, I'm a former Windows Mobile user who can shed some light. When my HTC Tilt got long in the tooth, I spent some time on borrowed Android devices. My theory was that the new Windows Phone 7 would be too locked down, too much like the iPhone, and that I'd be moving to Android instead. I loved to tinker and try to get as much out of my Windows Mobile device as possible, so figured I'd want something more powerful.
I mostly tinkered on an HTC Aria, which probably isn't a great comparison being a budget Android device, but I was modestly impressed. It honestly felt somewhat like an upgraded Windows Mobile device. Flexible, lots of options, etc.
When I was finally ready to upgrade, my wife was pregnant and I had a second job. I found myself without time to flash ROMs to my Windows Mobile device, and so I'd be stuck on a ROM I was dissatisfied with for weeks before having time to sit down and flash another one. When things didn't work on my Windows Mobile device, I would get frustrated and give up. I had stopped surfing, tinkering, installing, customizing, flashing...in other words, I started to use my HTC Tilt as a phone only, and maybe for light text messaging.
As such, I decided on a WP7 instead of Android. Boy oh boy oh boy do I NOT regret that decision. I have never ONCE looked back, and pity the fella who is still on his HTC Aria that I had borrowed. I have a dozen different hotmail accounts (because they allow custom domains and I run some businesses) and an exchange account, and they work flawlessly. The integration of contacts, calendar, messaging, mail...it's beyond helpful. I don't have to start a Facebook app, a search app, a navigation app. I can just talk to my phone to perform a search of any kind, and the browsing experience is top-notch. Facebook is right there, "merging" duplicate contacts is a joy, and I've found just about every app I think I'd ever need (granted, I moved from Windows Mobile, so it's not like I'm missing an app I ever had on another device).
Bottom line for me: if I were still a tinkerer, I may have gone with Android and would recommend Android to tinkerers (although you can definitely tinker with a WP7, if you wanted to). However, if you find yourself too busy for tinkering or just want more out of life than staring at a 4" screen and making an OS look and work the way you want, get the Windows Phone. If you want a robust smartphone that just works well, performs so many tasks natively that you really don't care about your app count, doesn't even need customizing because it looks great and performs well, get a Windows Phone.
Not only have I not looked back, but I have converted fully 5 non-techie people to Windows Phone with a sixth (the Aria fella) well on the way!
PS: My mom, unfortunately, snagged an Android device (not sure the name, but it's T-Mobile 4"-ish Samsung device) because the salesperson told her that "Android has millions of apps and Windows Phone has hardly any, and apps are what matter." I could wring that little egghead's neck, because now I'm constantly getting calls from my Mom asking how to do things on her phone, and telling me she "hates this thing" and is "confused."
I just don't know why people who genuinely hate the OS continue to come to this section... I went from WinMo, to Android, used an iPhone for a while as well, and can tell you that WinPhone is the best there is, especially at its young age. These people who want to own a phone to have to flash it weekly, or daily, can keep their Androids.
Windows phone 7.5 is great phone os. Is a nice looking os with few great built in features but is not a smartphone. I am using lg otimus 7 and i haven't any problems. Very solid and stable... And i love it... But i find my self using my 7inch Android tablet instead of my phone all the time. If someone wants a phone that can check emails and listen music wp7 is great. But if you want a mobile Internet device that can make phone calls wp7 is not an option.
Thanks your guy's insight. and you can tell i'm not a troll due to the fact if you look at my other topics started, I'm switching to verizon soon.
On the side note, for you wp7 people, do you guys go here for all your needs? like when I had an iphone i went to blah blah site, android is xda.
And I do flash A LOT. I almost wnat to break the habit. I liked cydia back on the iphone, I want the OS to be perfect, but if the apps arent, I want to fix that (thats what jailbreakign did me for the iphone)
I guess the main problem with windows 7 phones for me right now are:
No LTE? why not. If I'm going to Verizon shouldn't I get a LTE phone?
Pros:
I feel that it will give me "my life back". I'm not addicted to flashing phones, but it definately sucks that I probably send 30 mintes - hour a day scanning these forums about stuff and specs baout the "newest" phone. I see that wp7 phones aren't realized every 3 months, causing you not to regret your purchase.
Another question I have for the people who follow WP7 phones is, when are they going to release a new one for Verizon? Or ATT. But I think we are going to switch to Verizon.

What do you mean by making phone calls and browse the internet? Are you saying the browse cause it doesn't have 4g?
And phone calls: why is that?
All I can say is I moved from WinMo-Android-WP7-Android.
You will read alot of bull**** here about Android by WP7 maniacs btw.
I am one of those who wanted to use MS latest platform but discovered it's really not for me. Because even if the concept is really good and different, it's very limiting.
I wait to make my final judgement once I upgrade to Mango.
I think WP7 is perfect entry level OS, for people who are not crazy about the most advanced features. For less "business" or "pro" users it's perfect. It's for youngsters and people who don't need much but like reliability and simplicity.
Otherwise stay with Android because it's ahead in every regard.
So ask yourself why do you want to switch and what you expect from your future device.
@doministry: Moved to Android, yet still in the windows phone forums? Interesting.
I love these threads, though. They all end up the same in the end.
What most of us simpletons here, who are unable to fathom the depths of the advanced, Skynet-like Android, like about Windows Phone is that it's something new, something fresh. It's not the same ol' same ol' we've been accustom to from iphone and Android. Not that either of those two are bad. Actually, the opposite.
But, there's not really anything new there per se. Microsoft decided to go against the "Tried and True" and do something different. We will see in the long run if this pays off. But, every now and again, something comes along and changes our perceptions on what should be, the status quo as it were.
You ask about coming here for all your info. Well, come here in addition to going elsewhere. The problem here is that most are nerds and geeks thus they dig into things that most others wouldn't. Not many people care if you can reroute power from your phone to the dilithium crystals, and bleed some of that power out through the main deflector array. See? Nerd.
But, here at xda, if your phone doesn't do that then it's a failure. Let me clarify that. It's a failure to the Android fans whose phones are the best thing since Bell called Watson from the next room. There are actually quite a few of us that appreciate what Windows Phone has to offer, how far it's come, and how far it can potentially go.
Stick around for awhile though and you will find those who are quite informative and constructive. But, you'll also find those who come into every thread like this to tell you how much they dislike/hate/loathe/want to vomit on windows phone. Strangely, like moths to a flame, however, they continue to be drawn here. Which leaves me confused and makes me cry inside.
I am getting sick of that android fanboyism. I just want that forum section android free but no, in nearly every thread there are some people who have an android device and start to post negative things about WP7.
To the android using guys: In this section there are people who DON'T like android or other OS's for a reason!! So why the hell do you have the need to post your biased crap in here? I really don't understand this. Why don't you accept that some people like me like WP7? WHY???

In Android thread I am visiting there are tons of people who don't like it and it's not a problem for anyone really.
The other way round is not worse.
The scheme is like this:
WP7 lovers: "if you want to endlessly hack your phone and accept these lags, use Android"
WP7 critics: "we still miss this and that...."
What is really hard to understand for some is that some people use both platforms on regular basis and can really COMPARE them head to head. And this is the question here, COMPARISON. Times has changed, users are not devoted to one thing in their life anymore and are not treating their choices like a new religion. WP7 is still starting and appeared in a world of huge COMPETITION. If you don't know, the competition and comparisons makes things better, not the closed circle of believers. And that's why MS opened these polls where you vote for the feature you'd love to see.
Some people here are more MS than the company itself.
Hi GManLynx,
In my opinion Wyn6 and Dom both have valid points to make, Dom has voiced the fact that although WP7 is very capable as a daily driver (and it is my preferred O/S) it does seem to be limited for those of us that need specialised apps/functionality to be satisfied with our chosen platform. In the same light Wyn6 has it spot on that these forums do tend to be very geek based and arguments about granular functionality do get out of hand and turn the thread away from its original point, this thread will go that way in the end i promise...............keep an eye on it, its really quite amusing.
Anyway here is my penneth worth:
I have originally come from 6.5 where the flashing was both a delight and at the same time a chore, i then found myself being drawn to Android for the exact same reasoning and that was that i liked to play with and customise my phone to my liking. The hardware however at the time did not do it for me though and i found (as most people now realise) that with Android the hardware is the key for a great phone experience. This is now possible with all of the great droid handsets and the the apps available make the customisation side an absolute pleasure, although decent application coding is still an issue from time to time along with the possibility that the performance of any custom ROM you choose is entirely dependant on the trial and error application addition basis that 6.5 required. In my opinion this will always be the case with an open source platform.
Now with WP7 you get less chance to customise (although it is entirely possible) but the O/S is rather solid due to the fact that it is closed and that the apps that are released have been vetted so as not to afftect the functionality of the phone too much. This is also a plus point when it comes to the hardware that is required as you dont need the leading edge of available hardware to run the buttery smooth O/S. Improvements from Mango have made this even better in my opinion and have opened the door to better development opportunities and eventually better apps than are available at the moment, however i do stress the word eventually. WP7 is still very young and MS have some great things in the pipe that should make the O/S differ greatly from others......but again this will take time.
I could easily recommend droid or WP7 for you and i think you would be pleased, at the end of the day you will as Dom said have to decide what level of functionality vs customisation that you would prefer and go with that one. (this is easily done as all phone carriers now offer the 30 day cool down period, so you can evaluate both properly)
Try everything you can think of to aide your decision but most importantly have fun deciding, i know i did
Kind regards,
Creamy
Alright folks lets get this straight..
Although Microsoft improved their hardware and software people are not going for windows phone very much. But whats the reason? its pretty simple:
People want APPS not just apps, but whats the difference?
We see Microsoft advertising their software (skype, skydrive etc) all the time but with the iphone in front of it, there is no sign of supporting their own ecosystem!!!!
The truth is hard but people want official apps, good lookin games and everything that iphone and android has. Sure windows phone is pretty fast in bringing their OS forward in comparison to iOS back in the days BUT we dont live in those times anymore, there is too much competition. What can we do to make this understand the people from Microsoft? What are your thoughts about this? Dont get me wrong i love the OS and my HD7 but we have to see bigger improvements!
I actually think that if MS were to tie Google services in a bit tighter (counter-productive to Bing, I know) they'd see a wider adoption.
WP7 is at a disadvantage as Android and iOS had time to 'mature' in the market and get the userbase using their respective services before the WP alternative even existed. I know personally, I migrated away from MS services like Hotmail once I stopped using WinMo 6.
Without support for competitors services, there's not even an inclination to 'jump ship' and experience the other side. I enjoy using WP7 a lot - there's no more fluid experience on the market today. But because I can't properly use all my (now Google) services, I can never daily drive it.
yes thats also a good point! if they would work together with google in "peace" users would be more thankful. In europe bing is useless to be honest
Years and years of dogma like blue screen of death follows them.
Years of... *shudder*... windows mobile. That was an extremely extremely niche platform. iPhone-type users (their new target) ran away screaming.
The Lumia 900 should've been the device that launched the whole thing. Not one that came out 1.5 years after, and that followed it's little brother. 800 first? So people see it, aren't impressed, then see an ad for the 900... which is indistinguishable to people (present company excepted of course). It's just been ****ty luck and history mixed with bad marketing decisions.
Its Microsoft’s own fault things are the way they are. With Windows Mobile they didn't consider the phone market to serious until they saw Apples success but then they still came late to the game because instead of making Windows Mobile better they decided they would scrap it and come up with something new; only thing was that even though Windows Phone is faster and doesn’t freeze as much, they took away all features and functionality that people were used to. With Microsoft being so busy trying to be like Apple, Android took advantage of that; they knew that people didn't want a locked down OS. It is a shame that I have to hack, mod and flash my phone to have simple stuff like BT file transfer, video MMS, and a lot of other simple stuff that's avilabe for other phone OS's out there. I hope they don't screw up Windows Phone 8 like they did with Windows Phone 7.
I'm not at all worried about it. What you're seeing is the calm before the storm. When Windows 8 launches, Metro will be the new UI seen in every corner of the globe. The attention it will draw will bring more attention to Windows Phone--probably 8--at the same time. In the same launch window, and with the Windows Phone 8 OS, we'll finally see WP devices get hardware parity with Android devices, supporting multiple cores and large quantities of memory.
SkyDrive and Live Apps services are evolving week by week and making tremendous strides in a very short span of time. We're already using the SkyDrive app on current desktops and laptops, making it easy to move important files to Windows 8, and use documents across all our Microsoft connected devices.
It's correct to say that Windows Phone's struggles have all been Microsoft's own fault for lollygagging in the marketplace. There's no denying that, Microsoft screwed up. But they're heading in the right direction now, and it's only a matter of time before things turn around
I would say with market share that has doubled in the first quarter of 2012 in the USA and market share going up all around the world, that for a new ecosystem in the mobile world it is actually doing fairly well. With WP8 just around the corner and it being able to support much better hardware and screens and more customisation I would say that number will start to go up even quicker, it will be the 3rd ecosystem for sure fairly soon, It may even jump to 2 in certain countries around the world.

Maybe. Statistics have shown most apps are never used a couple of weeks after they are downloaded. The ridiculous app numbers quoted for iOS are pointless. The vast majority of them, 99%, have zero utility for me.

Marketing.
Beta was better than VHS. VHS won. The sheeple don't care about quality. It's not a case of "if you build it they will come." It is a case of "if you market it they will come." Anyone that holds a Lumia 900 up next to ANY iPhone and determines the iPhone is better is insane. Girlfriend has iPhone 4S. She saw my Lumia 900. She wanted one. Simple as that. You add in the fact the Lumia was FREE for weeks and you really need your head examined if you don't give it serious consideration. FREE Nokia drive?! Same GF had to pay $40.00 for Garmin app for a recent trip. That's $40 more than I paid for my phone and FREE nokia drive. Do NOT get me started on LTE.
The best does not always win. I just want three strong ecosystems competing. Watch what happens. iPhone 5 gonna come out with much larger screen. If not they are going to look silly next to Lumia 900 and Samsung Note. Samsung Note is redonkulous.

Let me get this laid out so I can understand:
Why is Windows Phone not doing well?
"Years and years of dogma like blue screen of death follows them."
- So then why is Windows 7, the OS that actually is in the exact same product space, doing fantastically well?
Honestly, guys, if an argument has to be made there really needs to be some kind of logical progression to it.
Windows Phone is not doing well like every single OS not called "Android" or "iOS" because those are the most dominant OSes right now. Why are they dominant? Because Apple recreated the whole thumb optimized, mass-market smartphone experience and Google quickly followed suit. Everyone else (BB OS, Palm, Symbian, WinMo) were all caught napping and look are where they are now. When you bring Microsoft unique reasons you are failing to explain why RIM is also slowly dying as well. why Nokia killed off Symbian. Why WebOS could not make it.
I wish someone would put a sticky stating exactly why Windows Phone has such a low marketshare right now:
Android and iOs have the lion's share of the market. Either an iPhone or one of the hundreds of Android phones meet or exceed the average user's needs in a smartphone. There is no compelling reason right now for the average consumer to leave iOS or Android and go to Windows Phone.
There really is no mystery behind it. It is plain and simple. A co-worker just got a Samsung Focus used and his first reaction was "wow this thing is fast and smooth." I told him amazing too on a single core cpu. He has played with his share of Android phones. He then went on to curse having to use Zune to do his file management. lol.
But there is nothing really to dwell on. Vet is right; this topic is past being a dead horse. The Lumia 900 gave a little glimmer of something that would compel some people to switch, but there needs to be more handsets, features, and apps. And then they will come over. And that will take time.
Lets hope they will do it! I remember when i got my hd7 my friends were like "whoaaa, you have windows phone!!" but now after they used my phone a few times theyre like "oh you still have this phone?" and i say yes because i love it, i love the OS and even the HD7 hardware but you cant do so much withouth the "exclusive" apps. I hope MCSFT get the most important cross platform apps to windows phone and dont scr** them up, like skype with no notification and background system or the new app viber without VOIP
Window mobile phone not going down at all. I honestly like what Microsoft's doing. There not pushing pointless apps out, there not shipping out phones that's loading with battery killing/memory hog apps.
Only thing that there behind in and my opinion is the build quality. 8G of memory no micro SD card slot! That's kills a perfect phone! If Ur going to do that - Microsoft, make an 8G, 16G, 32G, and 64G version

So if all of this is true why do they market Windows Phone to not be in beta?
Because even in this, "beta" of sorts it runs smoother and is a better device than the competition.
Google has been wildly successful with Android (at least in terms of units) because Android was built to reduce friction between all sides of the market. The extreme flexibility of Android ‘bows down’ to the device manufactures AND the carriers. It enabled device manufactures to do what they do best (build lots of devices). It enabled carriers to do what they do best (market lots of devices). It enabled users tons of choice. My hypothesis is that it also enables too much fragmentation that hurts developers will eventually drive end users nuts.
With Windows Phone Microsoft has taken a different approach by putting the end user experience above all else. By focusing on delivering a consistent, well designed (and therefore less flexible) user experience WP raises its middle finger at both the device manufacturers and mobile carriers. WP says “here’s the hardware spec you shalt use” (to the device manufacturers). And it says “Here’s how it will be updated” (to the carriers).

I think you might be a touched mixed up here. Dev Unlock is still available. It requires registration with MS via marketplace, and does cost $$, though there are several options. The Chevron unlock took advantage of a hole in the OS Scheme to produce a similar unlock. Microsoft did close that hole in NODO I believe. For a short while a variation of the Chevron unlock was available, with support from MS. I believe this has now expired and is no longer available.
Whether or not a true jail break will be available for the lumia is unknown. MS appears to have put a good deal of effort into this type of security. This is not to say it won't be broken. Also, to say the great minds of XDA are on it. Maybe some of the great minds, most likely few to none. Most of the great minds of XDA are android based, where hacking, modding and rooting, though not exactly easy, is common.
With all that said, I'd like to believe, nothing is really impossible...except may be the Cubs winning the World Series.
It is somewhat ironic that the most secure platform (to date) is the least supported. You'd think developers would be more inclined to produce for a platform where their software isn't likely to be pirated. Obviously there is the issue of WP selling less than iOs or Android phones but that's due to lack of apps!
This is my first Windows Phone and so far loving it and I would not want to pirat any software.

That is an interesting point.. I guess they (developers) care more about volume, than anything else.
People seem to love the platform tho.. You rearly hear people complain about WP, so that is indeed good news for Microsoft and Nokia.. the developers will follow the consumers.

It is somewhat ironic that the most secure platform (to date) is the least supported. You'd think developers would be more inclined to produce for a platform where their software isn't likely to be pirated. Obviously there is the issue of WP selling less than iOs or Android phones but that's due to lack of apps!

There are always opinions by closet experts as to why things are the way they are. I can recall when Android came out...everyone laughed...Same for iPhone, both have gone on to change the industry.
I'm of the personal opinion that Windows Phone's place in the world is less about Android and Apple and more about Microsoft. Microsoft, for whatever reason, gave away the smart phone market. Perhaps through lack of foresite...or perhaps indifference, it doesn't matter. They went from First to Worst.
As you look at a renewed Microsoft, and the progress it has made attempting to catch up, you have to be impressed. Google and Apple have a keen idea looking straight at the Windows Phone. In 2 years they've gone from Gen 1 laughers( just like android) to competitive models, without sacrificing their core goals.
The list of complaints about Windows Phone is interesting:
-No customization
-Rooting
-No apps.
I'm really not sure how important they are in the scheme of things. You want a picture of your dog or grandma on the home screen....hmmmm
No rooting....what this breaks down to is trying to get something for free. How can I hotload ...sideload...a favorite app...or by pass the fee for tethering...
No Apps. Just how many apps do you need? The MS Marketplace is approaching 100k apps.Everyday, more and more name apps are coming to Windows Phone. How is this any different from what Android and Apple did? They did not have a full library for years.
In the Hardware range, the biggest complaints are:
-No dual/Quad Core
-No SD card
-Lack of Hardware offerings
Microsoft has said, they will not offer dual/quad core until they can resolve the battery issues. I do not want to be one of those people who says... " Hey, I got a Quad core thingy"....whose battery last 45 minutes. A small core of hardcore people use their phones to a more fuller potential than MOST other people. Using cloud storage and streaming, office integration...exchange and enterprise mails with Cloud capabilities. My girlfriend uses her Samsung Focus S more fully than I do my lumia. She runs an entire HR department, from her phone. It's amazing.
No SD card. This is a good one. We all want the ability to carry our stuff with us. But SD card integration is a hack. Its a hack in tablets, It's a hack in phones. Microsoft has said, until they can integrate it seemlessly, its not part of the design of their phones. Apple doesn't do it. People respect them. Android does do it....And Android is another word for hack.
Lack of Hardware: Is not exactly the fault of MS, Android or Apple. They write their wishlist. The OEMs come back with the designs. It was very obvious, Gen 1 got the bottom of the barrell. This years Mango's releases, got better. WP 8 should see competitive hardware and design.
Once the hardware for WP is on par with the 10,000 yearly Android releases, then the real battle will begin. I read something about xbox the other day....xbox sells more games than sony and nintendo combined. And Xbox is replacing Zune, extending into TV, and has a huge focus on the Marketplace.
The bottom line reality is this, in my opinion. Its all about $$. Android is attractive because, to the OEM, its free. Apple and WP both cost the OEM $$. But, Android is the least reliable hardware out there. Apple may be reliable and attractive, but it costs more...way more to the OEM. They are looking for a viable competitor. WP falls in the middle, with the added luxuary of being able to sync directly with a PC, Laptop, and I bet, a Tablet.
I think the odds of WP being way more successful in the future is strong...regardless of the number of apps. Do you really need 45,000 weather apps to scroll through, before you decide to download Weather Channel?
lumia 900
Hi all new to this forum, recently. Bought. The lumia and love it compared to my last phone (android os). I came across a site called mobile9 that did themes for the lumia. I loved all the different choices of tiled live themes but to no avail I could not download the xap file as windows doesn't support it. I looked everywhere and came about chevron wp7 I sent the cert file to my phone in an email and saved the cert to my phone all looked promising untill the next bit. I was required to open the chevron.exe file it came up with two tick boxes one for a pin lock check and one for something else. I clicked the unlock button and it came up with a oops error saying make sure my usb is connected which it was and make sure Zune is up which it was. It says that it can't connect coz of that. So if anybody knows what else I can do to get those groovy tiles on my phone then help please and in laymens terms as I don't understand technical jargon. Hope someone. Can help real frustrated.

Probably can't use it anymore http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598062&page=2 and you needed a token from here http://labs.chevronwp7.com/ to use it in the first place.

Thank you. However, I was a first generation Adopter, from, WM 6.5. I was NOT happy. I ran to Android and stayed there for a year. That year seemed like 5 though. I went through...oh heck....you see my sig line. There is something to be said for a phone that just works.
There will always be phones that have features you wish yours had. But, I very much try to be fair about it, meaning....do I want that ability to by pass fees....or do I truely think that phone is better. For me the Nexus 1 was awesome....I still have it. When the hacks took over and started mucking with it....some of the functionality lost its luster....and the excitment about a phone that works disappeared.
I'll be honest here.....since I got my Samsung Focus S, coming over from a Droid Bionic, I have not looked at an Android. I was focued solely on WP. When the 900 came out....I've looked at nothing else. I have had to adjust my impressions of the phones....instead of thinking ...whats next....I now think...what can I do. I've experienced no lack of focus or functionality with my Lumia since I turned it on. Using the cloud, I now use it for about 80% of all my electronic needs away from the Desktop computer at work. I turn on the laptop at home occasionally. I have a Kindle Fire, yes, a droid, for my reading pleasure. But Windows Phone has solidified my preference for a simple solid device...that does not require hacking to extend functionality or evade costs. Thats not a jab at people who do root. I've just grown tired of it. Want wifi to really work....install this hack. What to tether...for free...install this hack..but don't complain about what you can't do afterwards...
I like the direction of Windows Phone. Its not perfect, wasn't designed to be. But I am looking forward to WP8 and Win8 tablets and integration across the board. Its just simple...and it just works...

I like what you wrote in this thread!
I am expecting a Lumia 900 in the mail, but was surprised that WP7 does not allow WIFI to stay on after sleep. Now I am considering selling the 900 since I find myself a lot of times in areas with no reception and where WIFI is abundant (university campus).
Ringtones
Number one reason for me to jailbreak my Lumia 900 is to assign full songs as ringtones. No, please don't tell me cut & edit songs it's a chores, really. I want it just touch and pick. Yes, I am still using my HTC android phone to date and the lumia is for Tom & Jerry entertainment D). If the Lumia 900 is announced non-upgrade-able to Apollo then mine will go on craigslist. I bet many lumia 900 owners will be pissed as well.
My first smartphone ever was a WinMo and I say that I would defend Microsoft mobile platform. However, WinPhone isn't really inbetween iOS and Android in terms of functionality. iOS locks everything down along with Apple the only hardware maker. Android has flash and other goodies customizations and comes in many forms from different OEMs. WinPhone, really, is just a locked down optimized OS and different form factors! It doesn't get popular because it doesn't have goodies on both side, namely, FLASH. Form factor isn't enough to buy Android users, and locked down system won't sway iOS users either, because WinPhone comes quite late into the game. Honestly, integrating flash and allowing freedom of ringtones would make WinPhone more attractive to the average consumers (they want to visit flash videos on the go, they want to hear their custom ringtones). Bottom line is WinPhone offers nothing new, feature wise, to the mobile world... Plus, Microsoft made a very bad move with initial WinPhone release: an incomplete OS. The result was obvious that it couldn't compete with the other two established mobile platforms and lost its ground even further.
Damn, had no idea how important, full length custom ringtones were. Took me 15 minutes to make nine of them. And there are apps that will pluck clips from the Internet for you, or even do the editing part for your full length tracks. Full length ringtones are resource hogs. And have no place in WP.

I agree with those who have issue with certain customization issues. What I want from my 900 is the ability to add whatever ringtones I want, whatever sounds for sms alerts I want and a full blown file explorer.
I don't care about locks and I don't care about paying for apps. As far as I'm concerned, someone took the time to make the app it only makes sense they get paid for it. I view apps the same way I view music. If it's a quality product I'll gladly pay for it. ...don't get me started on what I think if it's not a quality product.
All that being said I want to be able to add sounds I want to be able to add and organize my pictures (the way I want) and I want to be able to add the apps I want. (some perfectly good third party apps that aren't on the marketplace for whatever reason, I'm speaking of the batter percentage app)
All this said I love my 900 and I do hope Apollo will solve the couple of minor issues because if it does, well it will just be that much better now won't it.

And if it doesn't work for you, you should move to something that does. Its why you buy certain phones in the first place. I've never thought about WIFI. I have strong wifi at home and at work....so I never really miss anything. I might have to do a test sometime...to see how I could be impacted with wifi off, during a rest period....it may change my mind....
