[Q] Help! Flashing any kind of custom rom - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is rooted, S-off and with clockworkmod recovery. My question is - can I flash any version of rom (example: from 2.3.5 to 2.3.3 or from gingerbread to ICS and vice versa)? What are the tips that you can suggest about upgrading, downgrading custom roms?

Just remember to do full wipe every time you change the ROM with different build. For any sense based ROM, you can match up RIL with your radio.

What if it is unmatched and not sense based?..I recently read posts here in xda saying that its okay to change roms but they didn't mention about RIL and radio.

My advice don't mess with radio or ril. They are region based according to where your at. Leave well alone, I tried a recommended radio and ril for a rom and got completely crap service. Now I stick to stock radio no matter what rom I use or radio recommended for it. Remember the rom ex. dev may be in Asia and your in new York, you wouldn't use an Asian radio in u.s. You can flash any rom you want but as adviced always do a full wipe when going from one to the other. Gingerbread roms are solid and ICS roms are still in test modes with minor bugs.

Heh heh heh.
Matching RIL with radio is entirely different thing when flashing new rom. But if you do get a matching RIL, you can live up to 3 days without a need to recharge. I wonder if I can do that again with ICS. Hmmm... Either way, changing RIL is advanced step, although there are no harms in doing it. I would recommend this if you are willing to experiment with your phone, unsatisfied with the cellular services or battery life is totally sucks.

I just used aahk to root my dhd, now reading and learning how to change to custom rom. I am also concerned about messing up the radio.
If I have ship s-off, can I play with the custom roms in the development forum? Will they change the radio of the phone by using the default setting in the flashing process such that the phone cannot be flashed again? can I switch back and forth GB and ICS roms?
Do I need special app or program to wipe the phone?
Thanks.

Most of the roms will not lock your phone nor will they flash a different radio. And yes, you can flash back and forth. Just make sure to make a backup of your rom and full wipe before flashing.
There are a few that will be the OTA/stock rom or whatever its called that could lock your phone, it will state in the header what it is your flashing. Read the threads.
You can use 4ext, rom manager, etc to wipe and make backups. Both of those have the touch version. Install the touch version. Most users prefer 4ext. There are also scripts that will full wipe for you instead of doing the manual clicking.
More stuff I don't remeber due to lack of coffee.

Thanks Teichopsia. I don't understand what do you mean by touch version. I have installed ROM Manager from Google Play Store.
How do I find out whether I have ClockWorkMod installed on the phone or not?
If not, should I use the optional install of Advance Ace Hack Kit to install CWM 5.0.2.7 or use Rom Manager to install the CWM?
I read that many experts here warn us not to restore system apps and system data backed up by Titanium Backup to the phone. Does it mean that backing up and restoring user apps (e.g. games, utility, tools, etc.) after flashing new ROM are ok?

Are you certain your GPS was working correctly prior to you rooting your device? Are you outdoors? indoors? What rom are you using? If it is the stock rom and all you did was root your device, you should not be having this issue. Yet, certain custom roms have GPS related problems but many of them also have workarounds to fix it.

Thank you for your response. GPS was working prior to rooting. I tried using indoors and outdoors with the same result. To my knowledge I am using a stock ROM.
All I did was use Unrevoked 3 to root.

That is indeed puzzling. Simply rooting your device should have no affect whatsoever with your GPS. Since you're using a stock rom, go into recovery and make a nandroid backup of your current setup. Get in the habit of doing that each time you make a significant change. By doing so, you can always return to the way it was prior to the changes being made. Anyway, I've provided a link to where you can download a fresh copy of a rooted ODEXED stock rom. In other words, it is the exact same official rom with no changes other than it is rooted. the link is here: http://goo.gl/uFdtB Download and put it on the root of your SD card. Go into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING except the SD card itself. Afterwards, flash the zip file of the rom provided at the link above. After you're done flashing it and signing in with your Google credentials, initiate the Google Maps app and test your GPS feature.
I too have the same problem. I was using Miui rom 1.4.1 and GPS did not work, I tried flashing to a sense rom to do the ##GPS fix but the GPS still did not work on the sense rom. I flashed back to my orginal backup when I rooted my phone and it still does not work. I will try the fresh copy of the ODEXED rom and let you know how it turns out.

[Q] Android 2.3 for rooted evo with HTC Sense

Hey all,
I did some searching but could not find a specific answer for my question, and please excuse my lack of rooting/rom knowledge.
I rooted my Evo 4G a few months back and want to know if I can update it to the latest version of android without loosing my Factory HTC sense?
Also I think I rooted with unrevoked???? and I was looking at ROM Manager in-case I had to loose my HTC Sense to update, I would like to find a close HTC Sense rom to put back, but from what I found ROM Manager does not work with a phone rooted with unrevoked. How can I tell if that is what I used?
thanks guys.

Rom manager will work with whatever root method you used; it just doesn't work with amon_ra recovery. And if you want sense on android 2.3, head over tot he development section and look up a "gingersense" rom.
Just backup your rom in recovery, then flash the new one.
Check out Fresh Evo rom by Flipz its now been updated to 2.3 which is gingerbread what it sounds like you want. But be sure to read the op because it only works correctly with auto dim if you have an Epson panel. Just be sure to read it and decide if its for you. Also I have used Rom Manager and I also used unrevoked forever and I had no issues. Hope this helps.

Also the Fresh beta is very very buggy with regards to the camera. My video was basically unwatchable. But aside from that, 2 thumbs WAY THE **** UP it's an awesome ROM.
Virus kingdom Rom will be the end all Rom. Check out the kingdom thread.

go with miks gingersense till Virus drops his Kingdom port

Yes. Go to the link below and download the leaked Gingerbread rom with HTC Sense. Afterwards, go into recovery and make a nandroid of your current setup. After that, you can either wipe cache & dalvik and flash atop of your current rom or do a full wipe and then flash. If you decide you want to go back to what you had, simply go into recovery and restore the backup you made. If you didn't do a nandroid backup, go to the second link below and download one of the shipped roms for the EVO.

If you rooted your device with UnrEVOked, then more than likely, your recovery is ClockworkMod. ClockworkMod gets the job done, but I recommend using amon RA v2.3. I believe it is more stable and I like the menu layout. Still, it's all a matter of preference. As for ROM Manager, I'm not a fan of it. It is far too easy to go into recovery to manually flash roms, however, ROM Manager does work with amon RA in that it can swap recoveries for you as well as flash roms.
How can I tell if that is what I used?

The easiest way is to start ROM Manager. There should be a section that tells you what your recovery is.

[ROM][2011-08-04]Vision Gingerbread 2.15.231.3 Rooted

PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL
This is a rooted, de-odexed, busybox, nano, ad-blocking hosts file, uncensored DNS resolv.conf but otherwise completely stock version of the 2.15.531.3 OTA for the T-Mobile G-2. This is not an update. It is a complete ROM.
I built this for my own use but anyone can take it and customize it as they see fit. I am a "Privacy and Security by Default" minded person so I have built it with a few alterations along those lines.
The ad blocking hosts file is to block known adware/malware from first boot. Updates to the hosts file as new threats are learned can be done by installing AdFree from Market or manually updating the hosts file yourself. I am not affiliated with the creators of AdFree in anyway. You can install it or not if you want or manually update your hosts file manually or not if you want.
The uncensored DNS resolv.conf I have included is because many ISP's and networks censor the Internet by controlling what you get directed to through DNS that is not what the official DNS record would require. They also hijack bad requests and typos through DNS redirects to their own search and ad pages. Google logs all DNS queries and what IP address it came from if you use the "open" Google DNS servers. I have included alternate secure and uncensored DNS settings as that is what I use myself.
I have now included a link to download a version of this ROM without those two customizations. I have not tested it myself but it should work fine for you if you choose to install it.
I used dsixda's kitchen to do the modifications and without that, I would probably not have done this at all. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
You will need to be rooted with S-OFF, Clockworkmod Recovery and engineering hboot to install this.
See this wiki guide for all information on rooting and downgrading the G2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
See this thread for general information on the G2 also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916431
THIS ROM IS SET TO WIPE THE SYSTEM BEFORE INSTALLING. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF ANYTHING IMPORTANT BEFORE INSTALLING THIS! The reason for this is that I can see potentially major problems if it is installed like an update. THIS IS FOR CLEAN INSTALLS ONLY.
You will need to install the radio that came with this OTA manually before installing this ROM. The radio version to install is 12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3.
Download the radio here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/51rr1vff4wamedg/TMOUS_G2_12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3_radio.img
Rename the file to radio.img and install it from fastboot. You need the Android SDK tools and platform tools installed on your computer and the engineering hboot installed on your G2 to do this. Shutdown the phone completely. Then hold the trackpad button while powering the phone back on. Connect the phone with the USB cable. Open a command prompt and change to the directory where the radio.img file is. Issue the following command:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
Wait for the radio to update completely and successfully and then disconnect the USB cable. Select "REBOOT BOOTLOADER" and verify from the fastboot screen afterwards that the radio is installed. Then select "BOOTLOADER" and from the bootloader select "RECOVERY" to proceed to install the ROM.
INSTALL THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not responsible for what you do with this and there is no implied warranties and guarantees.
I recommend a full wipe/factory reset from within recovery before installing this just to be safe. ***This does not revert you to S-ON or un-root the G2.***
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS OF ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING BEFORE INSTALLING THIS.
I do not plan to do any customizations of this but I will try to answer any questions that may come up.
***Update: I may post a version without the uncensored DNS setting and ad blocking hosts file as it is a simple tweak and there seems to be a calling for it. Stay tuned...***
***Update: There is now a link to download a version without the ad blocking hosts file and the uncensored DNS resolv.conf.***
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/file/b4w4a...d_S_TMOUS_2.15.531.3_signed_080311_215742.zip

Hey, can you tell us how you temp-rooted? That is actually all I'm interested in; I've been running Visionary on 2.2 to temp-root on boot, and that serves my purposes. I'd just like to be able to keep doing the same thing, although I realize Visionary won't work, but would you be able to put together a Visionary-like app that does give us temp-root on the new 2.3.4?
Thanks again!

In the DZ/G2 wiki are instructions for downgrading the 2.3.x factory installs using fre3vo to gain temp-root. As far as I know, there isn't any way to gain permanent root on an installed 2.3.x system.

I have a couple of questions. You say that we need to have a rooted phone already, but at the bottom you say that you recommend a full swipe/factory reset before installing this ROM. Wouldn't a factory reset get rid of the root and s-off?
Also, how do you install a radio and where would we get it from?
Thanks!

I would get the radio that is designed for this ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202429
A factory reset will get rid of the entire ROM image on your phone. It will not change the s-off factor.

spookievision,
To make this a "turn-key" pure vanilla stock GB rom, can you include the radio that seems to be missing, take away AdFree, and that other thing with config file you mentioned (forgive my noobness) and make a "white-wall" clean stock rom that can be flashed using CWM?
I want to experience this "stock" for myself, but i'm from CM7 and don't have any experience with flashing radios, and this config, AdFree files.. I would like to simply download, do a nan-backup (of my old CM7 rom), then flash without having to worry about any of the other stuff.
Thanks,

Any alternate kernel can potentially break things as they aren't what the system is compiled to work with originally. HTC hasn't released the kernel source for this version yet to my knowledge so alternates that would be the most compatible won't be available until they do.

It was my own attempt to make a rooted rom. I applied the system patches through CWM, modded the boot and recovery to use the new kernel, but did not flash the hboot nor radio. Stuck on boot screen with a broken recovery! It's still a work in progress.

[Q] install the latest cyanogenmod

I'm using my HTC Desire with the official android 2.29. But now I want to flash with the latest cyanogen.
The tutorial given on xda-developers.com is for updating from 7.0.2 to 7.0.3. The wiki.cyanogenmod.com gives a slightly more detailed tutorial which seems to aim for a full install on the device taken from stock, but the link to download the rom targets the same file as for the xda-developer tutorial i.e. update-cm-7.0.3-Desire-signed.zip.
So I would like to know how to proceed.

I agree the tutorial gives instructions to upgrade from other roms than cyanogenmod but there's this input in the tutorial:

The only link to download a rom is the update-cm-7.0.3-Desire-signed.zip rom. Even in the wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#HTC_Desire_.28GSM.29, only update-cm-7.0.3-Desire-signed.zip is available. I'm expecting something without the word "update" in the file name.
Rule is, if you are coming from any other rom, a full wipe is needed. That applies to any rom.
Sent from HTC Desire via XDA App
but now there is cyanogenmod 7.1
That doesn't change anything. If you want to flash without any problems, NAND backup, full wipe, then flash the rom you want.
Is wipping out the current rom, backing it up ,flashing the rom a must to do before flashing in a new rom or a desired one ?
General rule of thumb. If changing rom it's an absolute must! There's no rom's that I am aware of that allow switching to another rom without losing all of your data (if you haven't backed it up).
If updating rom, try it and see. Most of the time you can just install the updated rom with no wipes and it works. If it doesn't then you always have your Nandroid and Titanium backups to rely on don't you? Please tell me that you didn't update / change rom without backups.....
Thank you for the advice . Im abit newhere so im just asking things before i start rooting my htc ..

If I'm rooted at 2.2 version...

and software version of 3.70, how do I know what ROMs are compatible?
I'm running Warm2.2 but saw that is now a Warm 2.3, is that compatible?
What is the secret when I'm looking at a ROM that lets me know if I can run it or not?
OR, do I have to have the 4.XX version to have more options? I can't do that now can I? I'm stuck at 2.2 aren't I?

S-off = any rom you want, I don't understand the confusion lately with thinking you're stuck at what version you're on or changing your unlock method, I've seen a handful of threads asking what roms are compatible with unrevoked and if they need to unroot and reroot using revolutionary or if they can only flash a 2.2 rom, where is this confusion coming from has someone somewhere in the far reaches of the interwebz told ppl they can only stay within android version X if they used root method Y or what cuz there seems to be some serious misinformation floating around somewhere cornfuzzling all these noobs
We are legion, for we are many.
I think the confusion came from the way I rooted and then having ROMs say they are a SENSE version, or gingerbread (which I never had the luxury of updating to)
I guess I'm VERY happy to find out I can do anything now, but maybe it stems from still seeing 2.2 in my settings and having to use a certain method to root that was for 2.2 only...
SO, since there is still ancient versions showing up in my phone settings, then I guess I concluded I needed to stick to ROMs for that version.
Thank You all for the clarity!!!
Just make sure you do a complete wipe, preferably with Amon Ra before you move into newer ROMS. Well, any ROM for that matter
A lot of people usually start with CWM and likely that's the recovery that you're using but like HipKat suggested AmonRA is the prefer recovery when it comes to flashing customs Roms with that said I think you might find this interesting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339654 is the best of both worlds... AmonRA recovery that you can flash your CWM recoveries if you needed to.

I used this basic method of rooting... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Switching between ROMs, you're saying to complete wipe? Not just clearing those cache?
Can Rom Manager be used to help out?

Doesn't matter how you rooted, when flashing ANY rom, ALWAYS do a full wipe (data, cache, and dalvik) before flashing.

Never use ROM Manager to flash roms, you are just asking for problems. Just boot into recovery and do it manually.
