[Q] CyanogenMod 9 alpha3 3g issues - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey all,
Ever since flashing to the new alpha, I have noticed that my 3g connection is real spotty, especially when traveling.
It is mainly an issue when trying to stream music from google play.
If I switch back to stock, all is well.
Even 4g is spotty as well.
Is it recommended to try a different modem or am I just better off sticking with stock?
I'd like to keep the mod but if need be I will go back to stock.
Thank you in advance.

I've had pretty decent 3G service with the rom. I haven't really used the 4G much, but when I have its been solid. I have noticed it does report 3G when there is only 2G service though.

I had the same issues trying to run CM9. The 3g was really spotty and the 4g was downright horrible (sub 3g speeds but ran great on stock). I tried every modem available before I finally gave up and have been using the stock ICS leaks from sfhub.

I had the same issues with CM9 until I tried out the FD19 modem. That fixed me right up. Not every device will behave the same way, but I have had the best experience with FD19 modem with the FD10 kernel.

Im running ei22 and i have horribly slow data speeds on 3g. the latency is in the 1000s to 1500s and speed is around 100kbps or slow both down and up. please help. i dont care what rom, what modem, or what kernel i use. i just cant use this like this. my only request is to be on gingerbread and to be able to use 4g when its avail.
Thanks in advance.
Try CleanGB. Simple and stable. Good battery life. It was my first ROM and im happy with it.

All the GB ROMs have 4G working fine. Your 3G issues sounds like a bad tower near you. You can try reflashing the modem. If you go to a GB ROM you will need to Odin in the EC05 modem so you can flash the EC05toEI22 modem.
Have you tried using an older modem? I think every phone has a sifferent one that seems to work better than the others. Mine personally gives me the best spped with the EH17 modem. Flash a new one and see what happens.
I've felt that data is slow on EI22 since I installed it. You may be experiencing the same thing, it may be inherent.

[Q] Please recommend Radio + Kernel + ROM combo so I can connect reliably again.

I've been using AOKP since build 29 or so. The past few builds have left me with very poor connections / unreliable connections / dropped connections. I suppose this has to do with the 4.0.4 upgrade. I've tried various combinations of radios and kernels with (now) AOKP B35, having done a clean install for M5.
The kernels I've tried include JamesBond, Franco, and LeanKernel.
The radios I've tried are UGLC1 and XXLA2.
I'm on T-Mobile in the US (Midwest / Chicago area mostly). If it matters, my GSM Gnex was purchased from Amazon about two months ago.
My main symptoms are poor connections - I have 3G with 1-2 bars while my wife's HTC G2 will have H with 5 bars. And I often lose the connection, usually coming off of WiFi.
At this point, I'll take any combination of radio/kernel/ROM that can restore me to good functionality. I'd rather not go back to an older nandroid (I think the last was around B32). I'd rather start clean with a new combination that will work.
I know this is a common problem, and that many have tried to come up with a solution to these drops. But I've not gotten any advice in the AOKP thread that ultimately led me to a solution that worked.
Thanks for the advice.
First of flash the Milestone 5, thats a full working rom, others are betas, use AOKP Milestone 5. And francos kernel Milestone 3 for stability /performance /battery and as for radios go to general section and get to the radios/baseband thread.. Download all the GSM radios there and try them until you find wich one works perfect for you, does not matter if its for europe or asia or us, just get em all.
In my case the only radio that works its xxkl1.. ALL other radios wont get data at all or low signal, but xxkl1 works just perfect you know? Full bars HSPA full speed

Best modem for JB roms??

just tried fi03 and my 3g speeds were higher than 4g
It's whatever modem works for you
I know some popular ones are FH13
FI25..FF18
I personally use F125..And works great for me.. Also make sure to upgrade your prl /profile on a tw ics rom or GB rom
-TeaM VeNuM Like A Boss
Imma noob but I've been testing and...
So far with jelly bean I've noticed the modems change your speed a little but the best way to get speeds is tweak your wimax hidden menu. Doubled my speeds on FI03 (best for my area) I do recommend u try ff18. Seems to work best with most ppl. Wasn't my case but it wasn't horrible.

I've gotten the best signal with FH13 so far. I tried out FF18 and I was able to get a 4G signal where I wasn't able to with FH13. Even though I was able to connect to 4G in these areas, I still got better speeds in the same area with 3G on FH13. Try flashing different modems and do some speed tests to figure out which modem works best for you!
fi25 works great for me. low ping and high uploads :good:

Best ROM for best reception?

I just got an S3. Yikes.
Even with a solid Wifi signal streaming is very choppy. On voice calls, this is the first phone I've ever had that drops calls mid conversation from home. And I've had a lot of phones on my three lines over 13 years here. Finally, LTE reception in L.A. is not great which is a problem because the phone takes too long to switch off LTE to 3G so I find that I often have no data connection at all even though solid 3G signal is available.
I tried all kinds of tweaks to make the WiFi work better (static IP, different bandwidths, etc) and nothing worked.
Sprint kept telling me to exchange my handset so I'm on my third one and had the same problem with all three.
I'm running out of time on my 14 days so hoping for some ROM guidance so I don't have to kick the tires with a bunch of ROMs trying to find the best performance. I don't want to feel like a beta tester so please only recommend stable ROMs. Don't really care about anything other features, in fact I kind of like to keep it simple. I just want stability and solid wireless performance.
Thanks in advance.

and believe me its a hit OR miss , reception issues are more than common in Sprint GS3
i have had enough and i will be switching to either a EVO LTE or Note 2.
all the best.

I'll ask the obvious question: Did you update your phone with all the OTAs since it came out of the box?
If not, do this, then compare.
There are pockets in LA that have spotty reception, and you may live/work in an area. For me, I work in Downtown and get solid reception with no dropped calls, even in a building which is a nightmare for all network carriers.. I enjoy the AOSP built ROMS, but they seem to create signal problems with phones. So I suggest staying away from those.
I do recommend MIJJz 4.1.2 ROM which is a Sprint leak of the latest build. My phone seems to get improved reception quality and data signal strength. Up until I switched to MIJJz ROM it would take up to 30 seconds in my work building to get updates on Tweetcaster. Now, I get updates in mere seconds. For example, I've been able to keep up on all the football recruits who have signed with UCLA today, including Kylie FItts signing. Good luck to you.
GO BRUINS!!!
BOOM!!!

The evo lte will be a waste of time cuz its identical hardware to the s3 as far as radios and soc. I do not have the issues that you or op speak of. Streaming videos is hit or miss cuz of the server not the phone or wifi. Maybe it could be router and wifi only in the instance if the video you are streaming is not in a web browser and the router and wifi access point dont like the ports the stream is trying to use and keeps re negiotiating.
I came from the evo lte, I dropped more calls on that than on my gs3.
Download and install the MA4 modem. You will get the best reception out of TW ROMs. I'm on MOAR and it is great. I also have gotten great reception on The Peoples ROM and Darth Stalker. Any of the TW ROMS should be good. I received very poor reception on AOSP ROMs though. Also make sure your PRL and Profile are updated. Most likely it is Sprint and not the phone though. A ROM cant make something out of nothing. I know my area is receiving upgrades and I went from 1 bar always at my house to 3-4 just in the last couple of weeks.

I've never had any issues with reception only on aosp ROMs but I would suggest getting darthstalker ROM and flashing the MA4 kernel it offers the best signal on any ROM I've had and believe me I've flash almost all and above that you get the best battery life and has some pretty good signal and data speed tweaks

I second the MA4 suggestion, you can try the stock or stock+root variant in the development section, I'm getting improved reception and speeds since moving to it.
Also, do some searching for the thread which tells you how to bypass the sprint proxies , that improved my music streaming performance over 3g as well.

Best of luck. I had the evo lte and reception issues through three strait phones over 3 months ended up landing me in a s3

actually on the contrary, my experience has been fantastic with Evo Lte
it never lost the signals and data (3G ) was practically double.
occasional low memory and the fascination of BLACK to be black brought me to s3 .
a couple of my friends also say that their LTEs are way better as far as reception and data speed are concerned.
TBH i am still trying to find a way to not let my s3 lose reception here and there.
Though its pretty new but i guess i might try darthstalker's with ma4 kernel
thanks

What is the best radio for the note 2 running 4.2.2

I am running liquid smooth v2.9
when I was using 2.8, the signal would drop out randomly and would require a battery pull to get it back up. It got worse and worse. Sometimes is was perfect and sometime it would not work at all. When reverting to stock I do not have these problems. Now running 2.9 I don't seem to have the same problems, but I have really slow data and it takes a long time to switch from 3g to h+. I am in the metro detroit area and got an email from tmobile telling me that lte was now in my area. Is there a better radio than the one that comes stock in the liquid smooth 2.9 rom? Anyone from the metro detroit area have a better option for me? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
You really have to try them yourself. All phones and areas are differentm what works on my phone may be horrible on yours. I suggest run them for a couple days and see which one gives you the best signal.
