In my opinion, some might not agree, but the HTC One X can and does a great job as a point and shoot camera. So far I am impressed how well pictures turn out.

I still think the iPhone 4S takes better pictures. I have both and have compared extensively. It's very noticeable in the HDR mode, where the 4S easily beats the One X
Just tested "Camera ICS" from the market - seems better.
Here's what I got with it:
Bitrate: 7k to 20k, mostly in 10-12k range
Frame rate: 24.53
Resolution: 1920x1088
Audio: AAC, 32KHz
I think our camera hardware is capable of decoding a higher bitrate on the fly, but I wonder why did HTC limit it so much?
And just as a thought... I wonder if it'd be possible to let main CPU handle the on the fly decoding, essentially allowing easy high-bitrate capture..

I'm thinking it's because of the limited storage capacity.

Nokia did the same with a lot of their phones. I remember having the Nokia N86 8MP which produced photo's that were smaller than 3mb in size. I thought then that phone manufacturers weren't serious about cameras in their phones, even when they advertise them as replacements. I now think it's a balance between what's possible in the phone and speed of use. Consumers want a picture taken with zero lag, fast save times and excellent quality from a phone chipset. While phones have very good silicon, I don't know how they stack up against a highend compact like the Panasonic LX or Canon S for example. I think these phones could produce better pictures but there will probably be an increased processing time. But if the manufacturers were serious about making a replacement camera phone, then why not have two camera apps. One stock one with current setup and one which gives full control over exposure, ISO, shutter speed, F-stop (if it's variable which I doubt) etc.
It's not an SLR... you're asking too much and clearly have no idea how cameras work so the options would be lost on you even if they were possible.

I prefer the quality of your 14mp Benq...
This won't replace my camera's - currently a Zoom Q3HD for audio/video and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5.
I photograph and film a friends rock band and solo act (I'm not professional, I just use Auto settings) The last solo gig I went to my wife took better photo's with her GSII than the One X took! I put it away I was so embarrased. Even my HTC Desire managed to get ok pictures at a gig on auto.

Not sure if you mean this for me but I never said anything about an SLR and I don't think I'm asking too much. I reread my post and I didn't mean for it to sound like the phones could beat a high end point and shoot but they should be able to produce better pictures with more detail, tones and dynamic range THAN THEY DO NOW.
Also, please don't jump to conclusions. I do know a thing or two about photography and these options would not be lost on me.
Regarding the original post, I use a Panasonic Lx5 and Pentax Dslr so I wouldn't expect a phone camera to replace these but I would expect a camera phone advertised and supposedly designed to replace a lesser camera to be better than what's currently on offer from phone manufacturers. I'm not sure how they'd better the cameras but I'm sure the trend for thinner devices doesn't help as it's sure to limit what they can achieve. Always a tradeoff.

Yes, it was. I should have quoted, but it's a pain from XDA app. You said "one which gives full control over exposure, ISO, shutter speed, F-stop", exposure is related to both shutter speed and F-Stops, the latter is clearly not adjustable on a fixed aperture lens (28mm, F2.0). Even ISO is technically not adjustable on a digital camera. You want to be able to do two things; shutter speed and exposure tweak (let's call it ISO, everyone else does, and the results are pretty much equivalent). That will adjust your blur and how bright the image is. Manual focus would be cool, too.
And I wouldn't have two apps, just basic point and shoot mode and advanced mode, with either fixed ISO or fixed shutter both with auto exposure, or full manual control.
Oh, and my apologies, I was a tad harsh.
Edit: I concur that the images are underwhelming; too much compression odd white balance, and, considering it was advertised as a good low light camera, too much noise in low light. I'm hoping these will be improved though.

I couldn't tell the difference on his pics, myself, they both seemed bad. I don't know anything about the Zoom, but I know the Panasonic Lumix are great cameras. I also don't think we can expect phones to replace full lensed cameras, but it can certainly replace those crappy cheap point and shoot. The lumix definitely isn't a cheap point and shoot (I see a number of $50 point and shoots that people buy). I will have to say that this is the first phone where I've been fine with not carrying my point & shoot camera though. In fact, I brought it on this last vacation and never brought it out with me. The advantages of the auto dropbox syncing and uploading to social networks, etc. make up for the photo differences in most situations.
The 'auto' mode on the one x camera app sucks though, I almost always set it to HDR mode. If anyone knows of a way to make it default to HDR, that would be kinda handy. I hate that it always resets to auto.

I must have missed that they advertised it being a good low light camera, it definitely is not. I noticed the noise in low light and low light mode really didn't do anything. I assumed low light would slow the shutter speed and I'd get a low noise, lighter (but likely blurry because I was on a moving boat) photo. From what I can tell, the low light mode only increased the contrast, which is pointless.... I can do that from a photo app (similar to the equally useless digital zoom option).
I think the hox takes ok pictures but the dynamic range is low and the images are quite noisy at times. However that said I always have my phone with me and your best camera is always the one you have with you.

I have both the Touch HD and the Touch Pro 2
Yesterday I compared the cameras of each phone, unfortunately the Touch HD camera shoots better and sharper pictures.
All settings were on AUTO on both phones, however I can clearly say that the the screen of TP2 is much more clear and brighter than the HD.
When you compare the pics on the phones, the Touch pro 2 pictures look much better, when you compare these two photos on the scrren of your computer, you can see that the HD camera shoots better pictures because of the 5MP advantage.
Here is the results, the results are pretty obvious ....... unfortunately.

have you tried other setting in pro2?, the difference is too big... In fact, pro2 camera seems to be from a phone 3-4 years ago....
Quality: super-fine
More Sharpness?
Here are 3 more pictures, the first two are fom Touch pro 2 and the last one obviously Touch HD .
Now , Both cameras are at SUPER FINE - WIDE SCREEN all other settings are AUTO on both cameras.
HD : at 5MP
TP 2 : at 3MP
(these values are the highest possible)
TOUCH PRO2
TOUCH PRO2
TOUCH HD
HD is using much more of noise suppression and much less of artificial sharpening.
In fact, the default TP2 sharpening setting produces horribly over-sharpened photos. One should definitely dial it down a notch or two.
With all that said, HD does produce better images.
Then again, it is more of a multimedia phone, whereas the TP2 is a business phone.
Whether we like it or not, that's how the suits in marketing differentiate the products and segment us as consumers.
Looks to me like the TP2 is either receiving less light (aperture size), or is simply not as capable in low light conditions. It would be interesting to see a comparison in outdoor daylit conditions.

Jup ur correct.
So this means it is a hardware issue then.....
Maybe it's time for me to leave htc and check other options like xperia x2....
comparing
I have used both cameras and in my opinion:
• HD: definitively better camera than TP2 but also definitively less fun. It is extremely slow taking photos and you really need to convince the people to stay still for ever. For any other light that is not exteriors you should forget using it as it is nearly useless. The camera switches to a low light setting making it slow and blurry.
• TP2: it can not compete with the quality of the HD in exteriors as the photos of the HD are excellent. In low light or interiors is a winner as it takes good pics even in low light. I have taken pics even in a dark pub. You must change the setting of the camera in options as the sharp is too high and produces artefacts.

What's the 5mp hack?, sorry if this is a stupid question but I cant find any references to it anywhere?, does it improve the camera at all or is it just a bigger picture with even worse quality images?
thanks
super wide screen or panoramic format
One thing that I recomend is to remove the super wide screen format that by default uses the phone. It simply cuts the pic to do it narrower resulting a smaller pic. If you remove it in the setting section you get a pix with 2048X1536, that means 3.15 MP. Also change sharp effect from 3 to at least 2. It is amazing the detail that capture in country side pics. If you prefer softer pics you always can reduce further.

your kidding.... just because of the Camera? Camera isnt the primary function of a smart phone, hell its not even the secondary function.. and your going to judge an entire phone just based of how good of a picture it takes?
I could care less myself.. I have a 10mp canon if i want to snap pics. Reguardless, all the benifits of the TP2 outweigh the ones for the HD.. plus, i currently have a 3125.. which has a 1mp camera in it.. So any upgrade is an upgrade for me. lol

sorry if i am wrong but are we missing the obvious here? tp2 - 3.15 mpx and touch hd - 5mpx. touch hd photos should win hands down. like i said the only time one can tell the differences is wen the pics are blown up like in the shots before. maybe post some smaller 6x10 photos or something. when looking at pics on both devices one can't tell the difference. actually look better on tp2 due to higher screen res. also think that really can't compare the 2 phones as diferent form factor and some obvious differences. also tp2 is businnes phone where touch hd is multemedia. thats my opinion so if anyone disagree thats cool
I was out doing some karaoke the other night and my friend recorded me with my phone. Needless to say it could barely focus on me and the sound was very garbled.. My friend then used her iPhone which of course recorded me flawlessly.
I love this phone and am in no way dissing on it, but is there anything I can do to correct or help this? Wasn't there a modded camera apk floating around for our epic touch? Any help would be appreciated.

Read the many reviews of our Phone's camera and they all say how good it is, but sit right next to an iPhone 4s and you are absolutely right... it's like night and day. Like you I have been looking for something to improve the camera for video and pictures but the best I have found is the HDR app. The crappy part is that it has to take 3 pictures to evaluate them for 1 good picture. I have found no good video apps. Sorry to say that our camera is actually not that good.
The camera on the phone is great but the audio on the video is awful stock. About the focus though did u check all your settings? My video camera is really good actually.

My Samsung Moment recorded the BEST AUDIO....even in mega high volume situations. (band practice, shows, bars, whatever)
...it also had a toggleable Automatic Gain Control option... you get us that option back, use a high bit-rate version of the camera app with the audio quality maxed out (44.1khz/16-bit/mono at the least) and I have no doubts that we could easily beat the iphone's audio quality.
So far as visual quality goes I don't now what you are talking about, the camera (still and video) on this phone only impresses me more the more I use it--and I've used it a ton.
It's ****ty software...period. Do you think the moment had better hardware? In any way whatsoever? At the worst the moment has the same exact microphone, at the best we have an even better one....hobbled by a ****ty software option made so people don't have 'too quiet' videos.
Screw AGC, make it hard-limit and/or (audio) compress it after it's recorded if you have to compensate.
Does this have to do with the soundboard? Because my og epic had better sound quality when recording videos. The sound on the e4gt is crap...

No. The purpose of taking 3 pictures is to take them at different exposures, which then a software algorithm will go through and analyze them and combine them into 1 image with equal exposure across the entire image, thus creating an image with High Dynamic Range. Basically, equalizing the lightest and darkest parts of the image by using multiple images at different exposures and "stitching" them together.
Yes, this phone's camcorder/audio recorder needs an automatic gain control. I'm no programmer but I believe that's software not hardware.

I'd even take an on-screen gain slider and VU meter....in fact, come to think of it, I'd really prefer it.
While I'm wishing for things I'd also like it to record 24-bit audio...then we can just turn it down later and not lose any audio data....and I'd also like a million dollars and a glow-in-the-dark lamborghini countach.

I would love to see some evidence that it stitches them together, it has been my experience that it uses the exposure of each of the 3 pictures to fix the first (1 picture).
As for the person who said that the camera on this phone beats the iPhone 4s, you can refer to all of the reviews you want but in real life use, the 4s takes better pictures in low light conditions (aka real life). If I'm outside in perfectly lit conditions than our pictures are comparable but that's simply not how the majority of people use our camera. I don't know how many times I have taken pictures at the same time as coworkers with the phone to only be disappointed by the quality of the photo the e4gt took comparatively.
In this picture my friend waved his hand in front of my phone on the second or third exposure

I'd say given that the stock camera records audio (at the highest setting) at 62.9kbps @ 16kHz obviously the audio is crap. Custom roms usually have this bumped up to 44.1 - 48kHz at 128kbps. We can handle up to 192kbps though.
The video bit rates are less than good.
1080p
Normal: 13 Mbps
Fine: 15 Mbps
Superfine: 17Mbps
720p

There's a lot of room for improvement. Potatoman, myself, and a few others have added improvements, you just have to search for the altered stock cameras. Working on an enhanced stock camera for the ICS builds currently. It's proving to be a pain though.

...and I thank you for your efforts. I don't know who's enhanced camera I have, but, the audio is always crystal clear, so long as it doesn't get too loud.
Do you know if it uses a very aggressive ("make it the loudest constantly") automatic gain control or simply has a fixed too-high-for-loud-content gain setting? Because 16-bit 44.1/48kHz audio is more than enough dynamic range to capture very very loud audio very close to the source if the gain isn't pegged....I'm going to change my theory and say that I think it's just a too-high gain setting...an aggressive AGC would lead to noticable pumping and breathing for certain levels and types of sound. (That drove me nuts with my EVO4G)
Well I'm not nearly as advanced as a lot of the others that have messes with the camera so I couldn't tell you if the gain is up way too much or not. I'll do some looking around in the class files and see if there's anything dealing with that.
The camera is actually very good for stills, and the 720p video is great, albeit no video stabilization, not even digital like what the Sony Androids have, and now the iPhone4S. But since there isn't any noise cancellation, the audio comes out sounding like dung wrapped in toilet paper that was put in the microwave on high for 30 minutes. It actually made me go out and buy a dedicated camera, the Sony Cybershot TX100. INCREDIBLE video (1080-60p), and even better sound!

Yes but looking stitched together and actually taking the pictures and putting them together are not the same thing. I agree that the second picture makes a pretty strong argument. But I was hoping something from the developer would be provided as proof.
Hey guys!
Seems like the original HTC Camera App is quite a bugger. Sure, it's interface is fancy and intuitive with quite the features, but hear me out.
I bought Camera Zoom FX back in the days and loved to use it with my Galaxy S2 since it produced some wonderful shots for me.
I tried it out now on my One X device, and there I made quite a discovery.
First of all, I did 2 test shots for each camera, so in total 4.
The first one I did outside, cloudy sky, slight rain -> white concrete wall. Makro shot. The second on I did indoors, closed room, artificial light (bad light condition).
Second is: I'll also write down the filesize of the photos. The difference is, least to say, overwhelming.
Another point is: As soon as I took a shot with the HTC camera app, I simply can't take any photos anymore with Camera Zoom FX. Camera screen stays black after a shot, photo doesnt get saved, app needs to be killed. It will only work again after a reboot. Seems like the HTC camera app not only applies heavy compression and somewhat dark lighting, but also causes glitches and issues within the system regarding the camera api.
Enough talk, see for yourself:
Keep in mind, I didnt use LED flash, nor HDR. Simple setup, no color corrections or post processing. Those are raw, untouched images down there!

Okay, guys. Now that you've seen those shots, what are your thoughts and impressions? To me, the color, brightness and sharpness looks ALOT better with Camera Zoom FX. PLUS - focusing seems to be much more stable on Camera Zoom FX, and its still FAST. Maybe its a little too bright with CZFX, but still, that just shows that the HTC One X Camera is capeable of much more!
HTC, fix your camera application!!
in my opinion, the 2nd shot seem way better for both cases u uploaded..
WOW... incredible difference...can you take a few more samples outside with decent lighting?
that is really amazing how much better the FX shots look...
so you are saying that you can only take one FX shot at a time- and then you have to reboot??
I found the HTC camera to produce a lot of noise even in well lit environment.
The camera is one of their big selling points it seems odd they would use so much JPEG compression in the software. Personally I'd like to output images as actual RAW files.
Also the brightness and colour contrast of the HTC one X screen seems to have given them a bit of a dilemma with the colour of photo's, when you take a shot and view it on the phone screen the colour looks good but when you then view it on a monitor the colour looks washed out and dull, Problem is if the camera reproduced the colour correctly it would look way over saturated on that bright screen of the phone.
EDIT

I just had this same issue after taking some shots in the garden, not with camera zoom fx though, I dont have that installed, took half a dozen shots then the camera appeared not to take photos, it would focus, make the shutter sound and seemingly take a picture but on viewing i just got a black screen with a triangle and exclamation. reboot was needed. this was using only the htc camera app.
OMG! There's a HUGE difference between those pictures!!! I was a little disappointed with one x's camera quality but now it's clear that it is software related, the camera itself is capable of taking better pictures. I really hope HTC fixes this soon, because I think this is a major problem that has to resolved.
Definitely needs to be resolved, been out taking some more and it only seems to successfully shoot a picture half the time, seems it doesnt need a reboot to get it working again, it just randomly decides when it wants to take a picture or not, seems to mostly fail in very well lit sunny conditions. also had some freezes using the camera needing a hard reboot.
Also downloaded - Different results
I also downloaded camera zoom fx - both stock app and camera zoom are set to auto. in my opinion the camera zoom picture looks over exposed
Camera Zoom Fx may peform better on a sunny day???
both very similar sizes Camera Zoom was 0.2 Mb bigger
first image is Camera Zoom
guys all you need to do is increase the exposure in the htc camera app for similar results
i love the camera guys every pic you post i see amazing colors, actually Camera FX images are over exposed

Doesnt make a difference for me, tried on manual ISO with same result, it cant take a picture in well lit conditions, tried a few again, if i point the camera to the garden (sun behind me) it cant take a picture, if i point the camera down to the floor standing in the same position so there is less light on the sensor it will take a picture, point it back up again, fails to take a picture.
been trying in different areas too, in shadowed areas or indoors its fine, something that is well lit by the sun it fails to take a picture at all.
Gonna try Camera FX now
actually no im not, it's not free lol
I dont think the camera is at total fault... If you play around with the camera settings you can adjust the amount of exposure and sharpness of the photo... I personally feel that this setting is quite good under normal conditions:
Exposure -1
Saturation -1
Sharpness -1
Contrast -1 (play around with different light ambience)
These settings actually gave quite good results for me... although undeniably raw uncompressed pictures are better... just my 2 cents...

It's on sale now in the uk too at just under £2, I know that's not a lot but I'm not paying for an alternative app just because the one on my brand new £500 phone doesn't work properly. Hopefully software updates or custom roms should fix the issues and realistically I'll rarely use the camera anyway, I have a DSLR I will use when I know I want to photograph stuff but was just hoping the HTC camera might be good to use on the occasion I don't have the DSLR with me.
And it probably will be if i can just get it to take pictures in the sun.
Well, after some further testing I can confirm that in regular daylight conditions, Camera Zoom FX as well as ICS Camera (Market) both produce over exposed photos.
That is kinda weird. I also experience intense flickering on the capture frame while using the mentioned apps.
Sometimes, both apps dont even shoot a photo. Camera Zoom FX just stays at a black capture frame, and ICS Camera just FC.
What's up with that cam, seriously? Thats kinda weird... Tho, sharpness still looks a litttle better with third party camera apps. File size is always way bigger, too.
I think the camera is capeable of doing much more. I guess the drivers are still not really final yet.

How bright and sunny is it where you are today?
it's very bright here and I cannot get it to take images in the sun at all, just getting black screens like you mentioned.
Camera compression is better inOne X. I had Xperia Arc and camera compression was horrible, Same 8 MP cam it used to be below 1 MB but it does produced awesome pictures.

Yea, pretty bright. Seems like the apps have issues with bright environments and therefore bright captures ... bugger
I'm wondering if the fixed f2.0 aperture is just too wide for sunny conditions, great for low light yes but I wouldn't use f2.0 on a DSLR in very bright conditions unless I was using a fast shutter speed and since there is no shutter speed adjustment on the One X, 2.0 I think is just too wide for those conditions, even on 100 ISO
Just popped back out into the garden now the sun has gone down some and the same pictures that wouldn't take earlier are now taking ok.
Okay guys, I don't know if any of you here are photographers - but I am...
It doesn't matter what app you use for your phone-photography - it's all using the same lens! What matters is the settings you use. Given, the 3rd party apps may implement their settings better, but nothing that the stock camera app isn't capable of. Know how to adjust your shutter speed and ISO settings accoridngly and you'll come out with some cracking pictures (considering the size of the lens and sensor). At the end of the day, it's a PHONE CAMERA. It ain't never going to be perfect. If you want great image quality, go out and a buy a dSLR or compacts / micro 4/3s camera.

Photographer here too
I do wish there was an option for less compression on the stock app though /: As it is there's still too much compression going on. Just play with the ISO and image settings and it's still pretty good
They really need to improve the software and encoding for both image and video capture. They are both worse than the competition. Their hardware seems capable enough, and this certainly has enough firepower, but it ain't being used right.
I'm not a photographer but I can tell a ****ty photo from a good one. I don't think they are very pleasing on this device. Older phones I've owned take much better photos. It's really sad that photo snobs come into a cellphone forum and riddle every post about the camera with IT"S NOT A DSLR IT"S A CAMERA-PHONE GO BUY A REAL CAMERA. Set the bar high much? We're comparing cellphone cameras. I don't see PC people coming in and crapping on browser and benchmark threads, saying IT"S NOT A PC BUY A REAL COMPUTER LULZ.
These cellphones are replacing point-and-shoot cameras. Those are REAL cameras BTW, and they are good enough. How many people actually own DSLRS? I don't even know any, nor know of anyone who would be caught dead with one, or pay the $500+ for a good one.
Downplaying the camera is also a good line for HTC apologists/fanboys.
I'm a Sensation XL user and when i switch to the One X, i expect a similar image quality if not better than the XL, i was wrong.
The only thing that amazed me is how fast the camera is.
Other than that:
-The main camera captured detail that looks very very messy, bad white balance and VERY bad compression. I tried every setting possible, set sharpness from 0 to -2 , still missing alot of details and compare to the XL's camera, also this camera has alot of noise even at ISO 100 and full bright area.
-The front camera is something that pissed me off the most, it looked very nice on screen but the actual captured image looks like it's from a 0.3 megapixel camera. I think this is mostly a problem with the compression of the front camera.
-Also another thing, why cant i turn auto focus off ??? what if i wanted to focus manualy. I was very proud of HTC since the early day because they allow us to do tons of stuff like turning off auto focus
-The camera have amazing auto focus at mid-long range but piss poor at macro shots, even at bright day light.
-The video captured from the One X is very bad, also because of compression
I love this phone to death, i love the design, the screen...etc, i dont mind all the bugs and stuff but i'm very mad at these camera issues, since they use it as a selling point of the phone and i'm a heavy camera user.
Your thoughts ?

There's a "fix" in the development section for camera compression, as far as noise goes, that might be an issue with your unit, it's not bad on mine. That said, it is noiser than most good camera phones I've used, but I'm holding out for an update to resolve that.
I'm more than happy with mine

mrhahn98,
Its a start for HTC. Previous attempts by HTC for taking photos was an epic fail. This is the right direction HTC is heading with the photo imaging...hope the future OTAs will correct it. I hope you are not comparing to a DSLR imaging quality or even an good P&S.
I'm happy with mine too. Way better than GNote. Mind to post some pics up for us to have a look?
i have read very different user opinions of the camera. I must agree that firstly, the focusing still has some issues (macro and touch-to-focus) and noise is still very evident. Its almost as bad as my Sensation XE so i kinda found the upgrade to be rather disappointing. But cons aside, the camera speed is really a winning edge for a mobile device.
If you tried using other camera apps (e.g camera360) to take photos, you might find that they can look really good so i believe that the camera hardware has potential.
Im hoping that HTC will, most importantly, show strong support for the One series and continue to tweak Sense 4 with updates. It does feel that way for now and I pray Im not just mistaking their immense marketing for real committed support.
Yes, im glad too that HTC is pushing for camera and music functionalities as their main selling point. Its one of the top few things on my list for a phone. Android itself pretty much brings the manufacturers to a level OS platform. Its all about differentiating now!
Hi, no i'm not comparing it to p/s or DSLR but to older phones which have the f2.2 lens like the Sensation XL and Amaze 4G.
I understand that most people come by this phone will be happy, it's a very good shooter i agree, but the quality is not as good as the XL and Amaze 4G.
I'll try to check out the mods and see if anything changes
p.s: Also the minimal focus distance for older phones, are like 5cm, One X have a very long minimal focus distance , like 10-15cm which result in less interesting Macro shots despite its awesome f2.0 camera
The One X camera can take some fantastic photo's (terrible videos though).
Here's one I took the other day; not the best photo ever taken but it's not bad
http://postimage.org/image/blnl4yapr/full/
I think the camera sw is just underdeveloped just like the rest of the phone, probably because HTC was rushing to get their product out, but I DO believe there will be updates with hopefully better camera softwares.
But my camera works fine, I feel you need to 'get to know it abit', it has a so many features and stuff and most people are used to having the camera just do things for them (as should be but to a certain extent) but if you play around and learn the settings and stuff you will be able to take some awesome images.
Cheers
your right about the noise but I think the rest is up to par compared to other phones ive used.
The camera on an HTC phone still sucks. The best they've gotten was the Sensation XE/Titan and Amaze 4G, but they ahd their drawbacks and the video was horrible no matter what. Considering I'm in no hurry to get the One X and am waiting for it to hit stateside, hopefully with many of its issues fixed, I can also look forward to the Galaxy S3. At least for that phone I am guaranteed good imaging and video, even if they re-use last year's tech. The HTC selling point is the build quality. The rumored ceramic body for the S3 sounds makes it more interesting.
Didn't HTC learn anything from their previous phones, and especially the LG G2x, the first dual-core phone rushed to market? How about instead of rushing things, they took their own advice, which they have been spouting in their tech interviews, to release higher quality phones and take their time?
The One X camera is the best point and click going, there is nothing else quite like it. You would need to actually own the phone day to day to realise how much easier and fluent it is.

I agree its a very good camera, but I also can understand why the people that say it sux say so, there is alot of room for improvement.
But definitaly this one of the most impressive cameras on a phone in terms of functions, but the results need to be improved alot, the 1080p recording should NEVER drop to below 24fps if you ask me and also the images could be better without having to change to specific settings, and some 'big' issues are the frequent blurry images and also the flash doesn't seem to sync with the focus moment of the camera which in result causes sometimes the images to be blurry.
But most of the time you get good images and sometimes you get those GREAT images and then you know you made a good choice

I would take these reviews with a grain of salt. For example, the ars technica impression of the photos is a bit misleading IMO. The best photo of a dark scene isn't necessarily the brightest and most colorful (the most faithful capture, not adding light or color that wasn't there, yet retaining details in the shadow, is the best for me -- in addition to noise control).
I asked HTC about the camera issues mentioned on the tech insider review such as this glare and this sharpness issues. The exposure control issues can be addressed with software later, but the glare issue may indicate that the physical lens is more glare prone (compared to the S7 in that photo). This Android Central's photo of an easy outdoor scene shows a lack of sharpness and micro contrast, which may be a combined result of the glare-prone lens and the sharpness issue identified by the tech insider review. That glare issue, however, is NOT a problem on this photo from SlashGear.
Anyway, those are a very small sampling of photos. Post your HTC 10 pics here when you have them so we can all see them!

if i am not mistake sharpness and contrast can be controlled in settings > cam options
i would take the image on top any day, it's more natural and real

I don't see anyone on this thread bashing them (the "we" in your question). Reviewers can say what they want, many warranted, many are off-target. But it's a discussion forum, so it's fine to have a discussion about image qualities without being accused of complaining or whining or bashing. The NYC wall lacks sharpness - it is what it is. It could be that reviewer got a bad unit, or it could be other things.

Thanks. Those pics help put the scores in perspective. For example, the cons include "Visible loss of sharpness in the corners compared to the center" BUT they compared the center sharpness of an object that is far out vs the corner sharpness of an object that is near the photographer - NOT on the same plane and, based on the scene distance, most likely not even within the circle of confusion. Why they did that really baffles me!

I feel it's warranted to do that, the hyperfocal distance on phone cameras is usually tiny, everything past couple of meters ends up being in infinity zone anyway.
Things to keep in mind auto HDR is on by default which could cause all sorts of issues if you are unaware it's happening (like blurs)

I know what you mean, except that corner tree that they chose looks much closer to the photographer. Again, if they 're going to do that kind of analysis, then they'd better choose a more suitable scene or do it in a controlled manner. I just don't think that scene is valid choice for a lens center to corner sharpness comparison. Anyway, DxOMark is just one source of sample images and I can now interpret their scoring better for my purpose.

I concur, honestly now that most phones can do RAW, they shouldbe comparing that instead of the proccesed jpg, they don't compare the jpg's for their camera tests

I wouldnt take it too seriously about the glare, 2 things when doing stuff like this you have to do a like for like in comparison. Getting too close so the fruit was at a different focal range yes it will have different lighting and not focus the same and the sun behind the tree in one shot and passed in the other? Like WTF? Or course the lighting would show a glare funny thing is go on the S7/edge and its been mentioned numerous times they are suffering too with the same damn problem!
The comparison wasnt credible in my opinion?
HTC dropped the ball with the camera setup they should have put this lense on a duo lense setup like the M8 it would be a beast! I loved my M8 contributed quite a lot on the forums here with photos from it but my biggest gripe was why 4MP? It was commonly accepted that what the M8 needed to be on top was a larger lense to actually harvest more details in the light being captured.
Frustrating as hell! I just wish they had brought back that Duo lense we would see something that would have sunk the competition hard and fast in performance.
I am using the 10 camera app on my A9 thanks to Leedroid, in Auto you can disable HDR, control exposure but not sharpness unless there is a hidden menu

I don't think there's a sharpness menu option. The A9 began the trend of removing the sharpness with the results being images being a bit too flat (nothing wrong with that especially compared to the oversharp gs7/gs6)
However, I think HTC struck a decent balance with the 10. The issues of camera is something I've even seen on my rx1rii so it's not something that can be easily solved
Any low light comparisons with the Huawei P9?

Yeah, this could explain the eye brow raising shots i found on the verge. Now if there was a simple way to identify when hdr is on or not in the exifs, it will become easier. Will spare from the 'not impressed' posts.
Not how a camera, according to dxo, that is as sharp as the nexus and has as good artifacts handling as the 808 should behave.
In the meantime i went digging for better samples and engadget taiwan has done a much better job than engadget headoffice.

and a comparison with the S7

Exifs, full rez the lot.

on the M8 it was using touch focus instead of auto focus
on the 10 its auto HDR messing up sometimes its on by default but cant be turned off

HDR can be turned off. See 2:30 here
we were begging HTC to reduce sharpness and processing for years so now when they finally did it we bash them?

here is something more subtle. First is s7, second is the 10

It surprises me how high the ISO's have to be on the 10 for the bottle top. The F stop difference is 1/6.Shutter speed difference is negligible. But ISO wise its almost 2.5stops (!)
Clearly these companies are doing iso curves quite differently. The 10 isn't using any image averaging like HDR+.
I would really like to see some people pull some comparison photos from the S7 in auto, then take to raw/pro mode with the HTC 10 and set it up to match the auto settings that the S7 is doing and see if the pictures then are comparable. It would be the best way to see sensor vs. processing, I would think? Also I know very little about imaging, so I also could be completely wrong. Also I would like to just see shots set up in conditions to the same ISO, shutter speed, etc and see then what kind of differences we're looking at.

Thanks for the links - they've been added to the first post.
The curtain scene is another telltale about the metering algorithm and exposure. All else equal, the S7 was ISO 200 and the 10 was ISO 500, 1.3 more stop, which ends up lighting up the dark side of the curtain but also clipping the highlights sooner without revealing additional details in the shadow. The same goes with the horse statue scene (ISO 200 vs ISO 320). It seems in dark scenes with strong highlights, the 10 exposure shifts toward higher ISO to light up the shadows, while the S7 is happy in keeping the shadows dark; some of us grow up doing minus exposure compensation in that kind of scene to keep the shadow black instead of gray, and that seems to be what S7 is doing while the 10 wants to make it gray.
The outdoor samples from the 10 are pretty good IMO. They're not overexposed and soft like the NYC samples.
