I was out doing some karaoke the other night and my friend recorded me with my phone. Needless to say it could barely focus on me and the sound was very garbled.. My friend then used her iPhone which of course recorded me flawlessly.
I love this phone and am in no way dissing on it, but is there anything I can do to correct or help this? Wasn't there a modded camera apk floating around for our epic touch? Any help would be appreciated.

Read the many reviews of our Phone's camera and they all say how good it is, but sit right next to an iPhone 4s and you are absolutely right... it's like night and day. Like you I have been looking for something to improve the camera for video and pictures but the best I have found is the HDR app. The crappy part is that it has to take 3 pictures to evaluate them for 1 good picture. I have found no good video apps. Sorry to say that our camera is actually not that good.
The camera on the phone is great but the audio on the video is awful stock. About the focus though did u check all your settings? My video camera is really good actually.

My Samsung Moment recorded the BEST AUDIO....even in mega high volume situations. (band practice, shows, bars, whatever)
...it also had a toggleable Automatic Gain Control option... you get us that option back, use a high bit-rate version of the camera app with the audio quality maxed out (44.1khz/16-bit/mono at the least) and I have no doubts that we could easily beat the iphone's audio quality.
So far as visual quality goes I don't now what you are talking about, the camera (still and video) on this phone only impresses me more the more I use it--and I've used it a ton.
It's ****ty software...period. Do you think the moment had better hardware? In any way whatsoever? At the worst the moment has the same exact microphone, at the best we have an even better one....hobbled by a ****ty software option made so people don't have 'too quiet' videos.
Screw AGC, make it hard-limit and/or (audio) compress it after it's recorded if you have to compensate.
Does this have to do with the soundboard? Because my og epic had better sound quality when recording videos. The sound on the e4gt is crap...

that's not how HDR works....and you are nuts. Our camera came out on top of the 4S's camera. Reviewed by people who went through the paces. At best it's a difference of what you or me think looks good...but....this camera is fncking amazing....maybe you got a bad sensor?

No. The purpose of taking 3 pictures is to take them at different exposures, which then a software algorithm will go through and analyze them and combine them into 1 image with equal exposure across the entire image, thus creating an image with High Dynamic Range. Basically, equalizing the lightest and darkest parts of the image by using multiple images at different exposures and "stitching" them together.
Yes, this phone's camcorder/audio recorder needs an automatic gain control. I'm no programmer but I believe that's software not hardware.

I'd even take an on-screen gain slider and VU meter....in fact, come to think of it, I'd really prefer it.
While I'm wishing for things I'd also like it to record 24-bit audio...then we can just turn it down later and not lose any audio data....and I'd also like a million dollars and a glow-in-the-dark lamborghini countach.

I would love to see some evidence that it stitches them together, it has been my experience that it uses the exposure of each of the 3 pictures to fix the first (1 picture).
As for the person who said that the camera on this phone beats the iPhone 4s, you can refer to all of the reviews you want but in real life use, the 4s takes better pictures in low light conditions (aka real life). If I'm outside in perfectly lit conditions than our pictures are comparable but that's simply not how the majority of people use our camera. I don't know how many times I have taken pictures at the same time as coworkers with the phone to only be disappointed by the quality of the photo the e4gt took comparatively.
In this picture my friend waved his hand in front of my phone on the second or third exposure

I'd say given that the stock camera records audio (at the highest setting) at 62.9kbps @ 16kHz obviously the audio is crap. Custom roms usually have this bumped up to 44.1 - 48kHz at 128kbps. We can handle up to 192kbps though.
The video bit rates are less than good.
1080p
Normal: 13 Mbps
Fine: 15 Mbps
Superfine: 17Mbps
720p
Normal: 8Mbps
Fine: 10Mbps
Superfine: 12Mbps
There's a lot of room for improvement. Potatoman, myself, and a few others have added improvements, you just have to search for the altered stock cameras. Working on an enhanced stock camera for the ICS builds currently. It's proving to be a pain though.

...and I thank you for your efforts. I don't know who's enhanced camera I have, but, the audio is always crystal clear, so long as it doesn't get too loud.
Do you know if it uses a very aggressive ("make it the loudest constantly") automatic gain control or simply has a fixed too-high-for-loud-content gain setting? Because 16-bit 44.1/48kHz audio is more than enough dynamic range to capture very very loud audio very close to the source if the gain isn't pegged....I'm going to change my theory and say that I think it's just a too-high gain setting...an aggressive AGC would lead to noticable pumping and breathing for certain levels and types of sound. (That drove me nuts with my EVO4G)
Well I'm not nearly as advanced as a lot of the others that have messes with the camera so I couldn't tell you if the gain is up way too much or not. I'll do some looking around in the class files and see if there's anything dealing with that.
The camera is actually very good for stills, and the 720p video is great, albeit no video stabilization, not even digital like what the Sony Androids have, and now the iPhone4S. But since there isn't any noise cancellation, the audio comes out sounding like dung wrapped in toilet paper that was put in the microwave on high for 30 minutes. It actually made me go out and buy a dedicated camera, the Sony Cybershot TX100. INCREDIBLE video (1080-60p), and even better sound!

Yes but looking stitched together and actually taking the pictures and putting them together are not the same thing. I agree that the second picture makes a pretty strong argument. But I was hoping something from the developer would be provided as proof.

Now that there are several roms out that make use of the radio released with DJ Droid's rom, I'm wondering if anybody else has any complaints about the quality of still photos from the camera?
Some have complained about a green tint with the flash, but I've noticed that it goes further. Whereas before this update, I was only dissatisfied with stills that seemed over exposed, after this radio/rom update, the white balance is completely out of whack, autofocus doesn't seem quite what it was (possibly a removal of previously excessive edge enhancement), tint seems off/the temperature of colours is out of whack (could also be due to white balance issues) and the camera behaviour is generally random (whereas it was stable and foreseeable before). Not to mention the infamous HTC pink dot.
Although I know most that buy the Desire think that "if you want to take good pictures, use a real camera", I'm sure that most of us were pleasantly surprised by how good the camera was when we bought it - but how about now (if you've updated to the Sense/froyo/720p radio)?
I have never experienced issues with my pictures/camera. No tints, exposure, or whatever. Or maybe my requirements are not so high.
Anyway, this is a picture I took with my Desire running the DJ DROID ROM (FroYo with Sense) with everything default

I think your suspicions are correct, your requirements are not so high
The picture is soft focus and the '720p' video doesn't look much better than normal (although the way you've filmed it makes it difficult to tell for sure) but then all the 720p(ish) video I've seen still has the low framerate and ripple with no noticable sharpness improvement.
It is all down to what people expect at the end of the day, I'd rather have a decent framerate and no ripple than this magical 720p everyone seems to chase as though it's the holy grail, even when the results are, in reality, barely any different.
I have yet to see a usable 720p video made on Desire or Nexus one. Terribly jerky and stuttered in all samples I have seen; even the samples made with other phones such as the samsung galaxy s. starting to wonder is it possible on these phones. smooth 25fps 720p video. don't think so.

Thank you, I wanted to check a video of 720p and couldn't find any other than those old two ones. It does look very good and I tend to agree with you that the photos are really good quality. It's a camera phone, not a camera-camera.
Normal camera does seem to have green tint in certain situations when flash is used but this can be fixed by changing white balance in camera settings to anything other than auto.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
People need to understand that Desire's camera does not autofocus all the time. It does so only once when you start recording so you can't just walk around expecting everything to be in focus. Meaning, you can't focus on a building 50 meters away and then try to shoot a flower right in front of your nose Rolling shutter is also an issue with almost every phone camera, so try to avoid moving the camera fast and walking around with it if you want decent footage.
720p is useless as it is now, but new 480p H264 video recording is much
better than before.
In general, I find Desire's picture quality to be maybe a bit above average. Too much noise reduction is killing the details and excessive sharpening is not really helping either.
Pictures taken with some of the phones that do only mild noise reduction look much better. Perhaps this could be altered in software.
If your standards are that high buy a camera. The Desire is a phone. This quality from such an allround phone is pretty good in my opinion.
i must agree that when i took photos on the original stock rom, they were quite crisp and if i zoomed in, the picture would blur then refocus to give me a extremely good close up of my pictures, however since replacing the rom with Pauls one, i have noticed the pictures, while good quality, do not seem to have the extra crispness as before. Is there a way to get the original stock photo viewer so i can see if it is just the software or not? Thanks.

question, if you can now do 720p at around 20fps, then can we do 800x480 but at a higher fps? maybe 60 or so? the higher frame rate (IMO) would be better than a higher res with a low framerate

i would be happy if it did 30fps in indoor lighting at least. 720p will be a bonus
i think that the desire can make some nice pictures, IF, the back cover is removed.
Because in the back there is a second "lens" that makes the pictures a bit blurry.
"these pictures are made whit the stock rom"
I think my original point is kind of getting lost in the discussion. I have been very pleased with the photos on both the stock ROM and most of the cooked roms I've used UNTIL I installed the new radio (which just coincidentally enabled 720p video).
I'm not talking about video recording, but rather just the stills.
I'm not even trying to compare the pictures with a real camera or even another smart phone camera, I'm talking about the quality of stills before the new radio and after. After, white balance has been abysmal and the auto setting is almost always unusable, but even e.g. daylight setting is off keel.
The samples provided above in the second or third post can't really illustrate these issues because the subject is violet meaning the overly cold tones now present simply match the flowers and if any pink tinge is present you'd not be able to see it either. If however you snapped a pic of a person with a light tan or soil that is a warm beige colour, before the radio update these stills would look great, but after the person would likely look pink or pale and the soil would almost be gray-violet.

Yup that's what I did :-D
Following up on this, I moved over to Paul's kitchen results from the R4 WIP (pre-refresh) and the quality of the stills returned to what it was before, so the good news is that it's not entirely due to the radio.
Only problem now is that I've read of some people getting renewed problems by installing some individual mods so I'm afraid of adding some of the things I would like to have like the round percentage battery indicator.
I'm a Sensation XL user and when i switch to the One X, i expect a similar image quality if not better than the XL, i was wrong.
The only thing that amazed me is how fast the camera is.
Other than that:
-The main camera captured detail that looks very very messy, bad white balance and VERY bad compression. I tried every setting possible, set sharpness from 0 to -2 , still missing alot of details and compare to the XL's camera, also this camera has alot of noise even at ISO 100 and full bright area.
-The front camera is something that pissed me off the most, it looked very nice on screen but the actual captured image looks like it's from a 0.3 megapixel camera. I think this is mostly a problem with the compression of the front camera.
-Also another thing, why cant i turn auto focus off ??? what if i wanted to focus manualy. I was very proud of HTC since the early day because they allow us to do tons of stuff like turning off auto focus
-The camera have amazing auto focus at mid-long range but piss poor at macro shots, even at bright day light.
-The video captured from the One X is very bad, also because of compression
I love this phone to death, i love the design, the screen...etc, i dont mind all the bugs and stuff but i'm very mad at these camera issues, since they use it as a selling point of the phone and i'm a heavy camera user.

There's a "fix" in the development section for camera compression, as far as noise goes, that might be an issue with your unit, it's not bad on mine. That said, it is noiser than most good camera phones I've used, but I'm holding out for an update to resolve that.
I'm more than happy with mine

mrhahn98,
Its a start for HTC. Previous attempts by HTC for taking photos was an epic fail. This is the right direction HTC is heading with the photo imaging...hope the future OTAs will correct it. I hope you are not comparing to a DSLR imaging quality or even an good P&S.
I'm happy with mine too. Way better than GNote. Mind to post some pics up for us to have a look?
i have read very different user opinions of the camera. I must agree that firstly, the focusing still has some issues (macro and touch-to-focus) and noise is still very evident. Its almost as bad as my Sensation XE so i kinda found the upgrade to be rather disappointing. But cons aside, the camera speed is really a winning edge for a mobile device.
If you tried using other camera apps (e.g camera360) to take photos, you might find that they can look really good so i believe that the camera hardware has potential.
Im hoping that HTC will, most importantly, show strong support for the One series and continue to tweak Sense 4 with updates. It does feel that way for now and I pray Im not just mistaking their immense marketing for real committed support.
Yes, im glad too that HTC is pushing for camera and music functionalities as their main selling point. Its one of the top few things on my list for a phone. Android itself pretty much brings the manufacturers to a level OS platform. Its all about differentiating now!
Hi, no i'm not comparing it to p/s or DSLR but to older phones which have the f2.2 lens like the Sensation XL and Amaze 4G.
I understand that most people come by this phone will be happy, it's a very good shooter i agree, but the quality is not as good as the XL and Amaze 4G.
I'll try to check out the mods and see if anything changes
p.s: Also the minimal focus distance for older phones, are like 5cm, One X have a very long minimal focus distance , like 10-15cm which result in less interesting Macro shots despite its awesome f2.0 camera
The One X camera can take some fantastic photo's (terrible videos though).
Here's one I took the other day; not the best photo ever taken but it's not bad
http://postimage.org/image/blnl4yapr/full/
I think the camera sw is just underdeveloped just like the rest of the phone, probably because HTC was rushing to get their product out, but I DO believe there will be updates with hopefully better camera softwares.
But my camera works fine, I feel you need to 'get to know it abit', it has a so many features and stuff and most people are used to having the camera just do things for them (as should be but to a certain extent) but if you play around and learn the settings and stuff you will be able to take some awesome images.
Cheers
your right about the noise but I think the rest is up to par compared to other phones ive used.
The camera on an HTC phone still sucks. The best they've gotten was the Sensation XE/Titan and Amaze 4G, but they ahd their drawbacks and the video was horrible no matter what. Considering I'm in no hurry to get the One X and am waiting for it to hit stateside, hopefully with many of its issues fixed, I can also look forward to the Galaxy S3. At least for that phone I am guaranteed good imaging and video, even if they re-use last year's tech. The HTC selling point is the build quality. The rumored ceramic body for the S3 sounds makes it more interesting.
Didn't HTC learn anything from their previous phones, and especially the LG G2x, the first dual-core phone rushed to market? How about instead of rushing things, they took their own advice, which they have been spouting in their tech interviews, to release higher quality phones and take their time?
The One X camera is the best point and click going, there is nothing else quite like it. You would need to actually own the phone day to day to realise how much easier and fluent it is.

I agree its a very good camera, but I also can understand why the people that say it sux say so, there is alot of room for improvement.
But definitaly this one of the most impressive cameras on a phone in terms of functions, but the results need to be improved alot, the 1080p recording should NEVER drop to below 24fps if you ask me and also the images could be better without having to change to specific settings, and some 'big' issues are the frequent blurry images and also the flash doesn't seem to sync with the focus moment of the camera which in result causes sometimes the images to be blurry.
But most of the time you get good images and sometimes you get those GREAT images and then you know you made a good choice

And if this is software only then i hope that HTC will fix it in time as someone said the firmware of it is still very new.
I have the xl and u must have a bad x. Definitely the x takes much better pics than the xl. I have both

I have both too , and i have my friend's One X too to compare between 2 OneX, i dont think it's "Bad" camera since i've never heard of it, it's just not as good in the details as the XL
Had this phone for a week now, coming from my samsung galaxy S2
the camera quality is superb, alot better then my SG2 and that took superb pictures..
My mates XL Pictures are no where near as good as mine, He's amazed how clear the HOX pictures are..
Think you might have some issues with your camera.

Agreed something is wrong with it, I must say after 50% zoom the image does get degraded but I can almost defiantly say its software related.

I read reviews that says the Galaxy Nexus camera is worse compared to s2 and the details of the picture taken is lesser compared to GS2 and also the video How true is that? I mean does the GN's camera can't compete w/ the gs2's camera and there difference in quality is really huge?
So does this issue can be fixed by only an OS update w/ camera improvements? or really this issue is really on the hardware and can't be fixed w/ os update?
If you can also can you please post picture taken by your galaxy nexus's camera? thank you
There are plenty of picture threads on here if you'd like to browse in the general forum, but I'll try to post a pic for you in a few. As far as quality I find the camera pretty impressive compared to my old droid bionic camera. Yes it's a lower mp but at the same time it's a matter of lens quality that really makes the difference. As for what you were saying about the upgraded os and whatnot, there is a thread in the development forums for the Gnex toolkit by mskips. He's compiled a modified "media_profiles.xml" file. That xml controls the cameras properties on the phone. He has them changed to improve video, audio, and picture quality. I've noticed a pretty decent improvement over the stock settings especially in video recording. Hope that helps you out a bit.

Yes the camera is not as good as the SGSII, but very few cameras are. The camera is not terrible, people just like to complain about things because they're terrible photographers lol.

Maybe It depends on the skill?
I can't do like this, and all the quality of photo took by my GN is so terrible...
I think that maybe is caused by the camera, because my Sony X10i doesn't have this problem.
So what do you think?

Lol. I wash them about 20 times a day. I'm an automotive technician though so they get pretty dirty throughout the day. Oil, grease, dirt, all the fun stuff I get paid to play in. haha
As far as the cameras quality being a skill issue... It is not necessarily a skill issue on the user's part, but at the same time a dslr camera's auto settings, and other settings allow for a lot more error on the user's part. My pictures from my d40 will always look cleaner than my gnex. This falls back to lens quality as well. My nicer lenses were more expensive than my phone by far and there's a reason high end lenses cost so much. Using cell phones to take pictures doesn't require any special talents but knowing what conditions will help you produce better quality photos can help a lot. Having the right lighting alone can make a huge difference. Also you need to remember it is a phone and not a camera. Yes it has a camera, but it's main purpose and intent is to be a communications device which it does well. lol. I also feel that for a phone it has a more than adequate camera. It's not the best on the market, but I got this phone for development purposes and my love of android software. As for pictures I've got my old minolta 35mm and my Nikon DSLR.
I will never understand why people say the s2 has a better camera. I had the s2 before the GN and I hated the camera tit would always take a picture I millisecond too short when focusing causing blurry photos. Hated that damn camera. I'm very happy with this. I truly believe anything over 5mp on a phone is pure overkill is just a game of who has the greater Number. All of this only differs if they actually put a damn great sensor of course but I'm loving my nexus camera. Oh and I loved the nexus one camera too. That was sharp and so reliable.

You are exactly right about the >5mp being overkill for a phone. Mp has nothing to do with photo quality when taken it is mainly a unit used to measure the depth of the image and how large you can increase it before you see pixels. I've never taken a picture with my phone that I've wanted to blow up bigger than 3x5 at the most. lol.
In my opinion, some might not agree, but the HTC One X can and does a great job as a point and shoot camera. So far I am impressed how well pictures turn out.

I still think the iPhone 4S takes better pictures. I have both and have compared extensively. It's very noticeable in the HDR mode, where the 4S easily beats the One X
Just tested "Camera ICS" from the market - seems better.
Here's what I got with it:
Bitrate: 7k to 20k, mostly in 10-12k range
Frame rate: 24.53
Resolution: 1920x1088
Audio: AAC, 32KHz
I think our camera hardware is capable of decoding a higher bitrate on the fly, but I wonder why did HTC limit it so much?
And just as a thought... I wonder if it'd be possible to let main CPU handle the on the fly decoding, essentially allowing easy high-bitrate capture..

Nokia did the same with a lot of their phones. I remember having the Nokia N86 8MP which produced photo's that were smaller than 3mb in size. I thought then that phone manufacturers weren't serious about cameras in their phones, even when they advertise them as replacements. I now think it's a balance between what's possible in the phone and speed of use. Consumers want a picture taken with zero lag, fast save times and excellent quality from a phone chipset. While phones have very good silicon, I don't know how they stack up against a highend compact like the Panasonic LX or Canon S for example. I think these phones could produce better pictures but there will probably be an increased processing time. But if the manufacturers were serious about making a replacement camera phone, then why not have two camera apps. One stock one with current setup and one which gives full control over exposure, ISO, shutter speed, F-stop (if it's variable which I doubt) etc.
It's not an SLR... you're asking too much and clearly have no idea how cameras work so the options would be lost on you even if they were possible.

This won't replace my camera's - currently a Zoom Q3HD for audio/video and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5.
I photograph and film a friends rock band and solo act (I'm not professional, I just use Auto settings) The last solo gig I went to my wife took better photo's with her GSII than the One X took! I put it away I was so embarrased. Even my HTC Desire managed to get ok pictures at a gig on auto.

Not sure if you mean this for me but I never said anything about an SLR and I don't think I'm asking too much. I reread my post and I didn't mean for it to sound like the phones could beat a high end point and shoot but they should be able to produce better pictures with more detail, tones and dynamic range THAN THEY DO NOW.
Also, please don't jump to conclusions. I do know a thing or two about photography and these options would not be lost on me.
Regarding the original post, I use a Panasonic Lx5 and Pentax Dslr so I wouldn't expect a phone camera to replace these but I would expect a camera phone advertised and supposedly designed to replace a lesser camera to be better than what's currently on offer from phone manufacturers. I'm not sure how they'd better the cameras but I'm sure the trend for thinner devices doesn't help as it's sure to limit what they can achieve. Always a tradeoff.

Yes, it was. I should have quoted, but it's a pain from XDA app. You said "one which gives full control over exposure, ISO, shutter speed, F-stop", exposure is related to both shutter speed and F-Stops, the latter is clearly not adjustable on a fixed aperture lens (28mm, F2.0). Even ISO is technically not adjustable on a digital camera. You want to be able to do two things; shutter speed and exposure tweak (let's call it ISO, everyone else does, and the results are pretty much equivalent). That will adjust your blur and how bright the image is. Manual focus would be cool, too.
And I wouldn't have two apps, just basic point and shoot mode and advanced mode, with either fixed ISO or fixed shutter both with auto exposure, or full manual control.
Oh, and my apologies, I was a tad harsh.
Edit: I concur that the images are underwhelming; too much compression odd white balance, and, considering it was advertised as a good low light camera, too much noise in low light. I'm hoping these will be improved though.

I couldn't tell the difference on his pics, myself, they both seemed bad. I don't know anything about the Zoom, but I know the Panasonic Lumix are great cameras. I also don't think we can expect phones to replace full lensed cameras, but it can certainly replace those crappy cheap point and shoot. The lumix definitely isn't a cheap point and shoot (I see a number of $50 point and shoots that people buy). I will have to say that this is the first phone where I've been fine with not carrying my point & shoot camera though. In fact, I brought it on this last vacation and never brought it out with me. The advantages of the auto dropbox syncing and uploading to social networks, etc. make up for the photo differences in most situations.
The 'auto' mode on the one x camera app sucks though, I almost always set it to HDR mode. If anyone knows of a way to make it default to HDR, that would be kinda handy. I hate that it always resets to auto.

I must have missed that they advertised it being a good low light camera, it definitely is not. I noticed the noise in low light and low light mode really didn't do anything. I assumed low light would slow the shutter speed and I'd get a low noise, lighter (but likely blurry because I was on a moving boat) photo. From what I can tell, the low light mode only increased the contrast, which is pointless.... I can do that from a photo app (similar to the equally useless digital zoom option).
I think the hox takes ok pictures but the dynamic range is low and the images are quite noisy at times. However that said I always have my phone with me and your best camera is always the one you have with you.
So I took some test shots between the ZL and my iPhone 5, wow is all I can say.
And NOT a good wow either.
The ZL is pretty bad compared to the iP5.
The pic's look very washed out on the ZL, I tested the shots in Auto mode and normal mode as well as HDR.
In all cases the iP5 in just normal shooting mode blew the ZL out of the water.
Now looking at the pic's on the ZL screen they look better because of that Bravia color thing, but on my iMac side by side the iP5 kill it.
Weird.
Is there any setting's to help this??

What's also strange is to use the 13MP you have to take a picture in 4X3 mode, all normal auto mode pic's are a 9MP shot.
I also tested the dif between a 13mp shot and a 9mp and saw no difference except that the iPhone 5 was still better in both still and video.
Meh, you guys should know camera is not the strong point of this phone and megapixel don't tell the whole story. If you wanted a phone for camera it's better to buy Nokia N8, it's cheap and still way better than most cameraphones of today. I still kept Nokia N8 as second phone so when I going places I got good camera to take pictures and videos
I think one of the main reasons to look at camera phones is the fact that you don't need to carry a second device and that you always carry it with you.
I am surprised that the ZL has such a lousy camera - thought Sony's expertise with cameras should have helped. I hope it's not a sensor issue and that maybe a firmware/software update would help with the images.

Didn't buy because of camera
I am travelling in Chicago, went to the Sony store, had the ZL in my hand and was going to buy it and took a picture.
I have a Galaxy SII now, a bit handicapped I think by the CM10.1 camera software, and took the same picture with it.
There was a HUGE difference. The ZL was brighter, but the detail was awful on the ZL -- there are what appear to be JPG compression artifacts or sharpening artifacts everywhere. Text in the image had pixel artifacts extending out from corners so that everything was jagged and looked like it was done with a 1-2mpx camera instead (and yes I had it set at max).
I'm a photographer, and I am not buying a phone to replace real cameras, but I also don't want to buy the latest and greatest phone and take a step 3 years back in cameras.
This all looks like software (in a very "gut reaction to a few images"). It looks and feels like poor image processing from the raw data, either over-compression or bad sharpening.
I've done a bit of searching and found a few "bad camera" comments, but has there been any reaction from Sony, any indication of improved settings coming? Are any of the mods available capable of addressing this sort of thing, or is that lost in proprietary code space?
I left without a phone, sadly. My GS2 with CM10.1 does almost everything I need, I was just looking for a fresh face. And I LOVED the form factor and feel. But the camera was a deal killer. Will lurk around here in case there may be forthcoming software fixes (as I am almost certain it is a software issue).

Yeah, my bad in this case; I had assumed they would have it mail enabled and I could send myself a photo when I tested it, but they didn't have it set up. I may go back (it's not far) and take a microSD card with me, and see if it's set up so I can write to it and take the photo away. I'd love to have one where I could compare the two on a computer screen.
The image it rendered had good color (better than my SII) and was nicely focused. Just badly processed. I was hoping someone would say "you forgot to set the 'good image or small image'" option to "good".
I REALLY liked the feel of the back cover, they did a nice job there. Easy to hold, didn't feel like it was continually going to slide out of my hand.

See this. There is a lot of discussion going on (at xda & sony support forums) about the sony's image "post processing" used in the XZ/ZL. I've read somewhere that this matter has been acknowledged by sony support. You may have a look at the XZ general section for threads (like this) regarding camera (same camera hardware used in ZL). Btw, I think that camera on ZL is not bad at all (it bests my previous note2 camera in almost all aspects)! Some software updates might fix the existing issues (noise blur) especially in the auto mode. Do try the normal mode (13mp size) with hdr & flash off, in case you revisit the store.

to look at pics on the phone it works fine (probably coz of bravia engine) .. but on a larger screen u can see the problem .. hopefully we see a fix :fingers-crossed:
does the camera mod in the apps & themes work any better than the stock one ? cybershot ....
Does this mod help?
I ran across this. It sounds like it got mixed results, so I suspect it is only touching around the edges of the camera processing and not changing how the engine does the jpg compression. But maybe it is. I offer it for reference; discussion may be better in that thread.

OK, I decided I could live with a less poor camera and bought one because I liked everything else. So here are some comparisons. These are done from the perspective of looking at fine detail, not overall appearance at a small size. I.e. I think a lot of what Sony has done is aimed at highly compressed JPG's suitable for facebook-like postings. I don't do that, I use it in lieu of a real camera and so would actually prefer raw images, but as a substitute I hope for good detail and suitable dynamic range despite the JPG conversion. Anyway.
So while I've seen a lot of just full images and "see how pretty" I thought i would try to see the fine detail, not how it did as a snapshot (while admitting that it's a cell phone and a "snapshot" is exactly what it's intended for, it is not a DSLR).
attached is a composite image taken with the Galaxy S2 running CM10.1, and a ZL running stock with three different modes as indicated. all were at max resolution. All were interior shots with good light (large windows beside the scene), at the same distance from a jar of jelly beans. I then extracted two components, one for fine detail (a bar code) and one for some color and detail (an edge of the plastic jar). These were all taken from about 4' away, handheld but shooting several shots and picking the best to reduce the impact of any motion blur.
First, I must say the ZL did not have the artifacts I noticed in the store; I must have had a different setting there.
The images are over-processed, whether for noise or (my theory) compression not sure, but there are a LOT of JPG artifacts in them.
But there are better than I expected. They are not better in a processing sense than the S2, but what you get is better resolution then poorer processing (look at the smoothness around high contrast borers, e.g. the top of the 9 -- there's a lot more pixel raggedness in the S2 from less resolution, but the ZL is just ragged despite having more pixels -- kind of a random jaggedness from compression artifacts). But the net result of added resolution and poor processing is a better image.
But not nearly as "better" as it should be with a lot more resolution!
Sony really owes a "leave the darn image alone" setting.
The burst mode is interesting -- I'm not sure what they are doing there, but it looks like yet even more aggressive sharpening and processing. The bar code at first looks like it is a much clearer shot -- but it is not. It's excessively sharpened and detail is lost even though it fools the eye with more contrast on edge transitions. Look especially at the colors in the jelly beans through the glare, how poor and splotchy they became).
Surprisingly the Superior vs. Normal, despite all I've read, did not have a lot of difference. Not sure if the conditions were such the difference didn't kick in, or... ?
Anyway, to the original point -- here are pictures.
On a related note, been playing with it for low light, and tried in store a HTC one, and there is a marked difference there, with the bigger pixels doing a much better job at low light, but they just didn't add QUITE enough of them for me. The ZL is much better than the older GS2 at low light, but even with the relatively faster lens and newer sensor, it's only OK. Oh... for an F1.4 lens one day. :fingers-crossed:

OK, I decided I could live with a less poor camera and bought one because I liked everything else. So here are some comparisons. Hi there! Congrats on your new device n welcome aboard! I appreciate your feedback regarding the camera performance on the ZL. I tend to agree with most of what you've said! I only hope sony gives us a patch for camera software soon!
