[Q] Auto Brightness - HTC One X

Just wondering if the auto brightness on the HOX is worth using ?
I have found on other hand sets apart from the Iphone that it ends up using more battery.
So just a basic question do you use auto brightness and if not what sort of level do you have brightness set at ?

hmm, now that you mention it. Putting it on auto actually may draw more power since it always has to adjust itself depending on the light in the environment your located in. I used auto all the time and I get HORRIBLE battery life, cant even get through half a day so I put it on around 40% or so now. I put it between the C and the B in the Automatic Brightness text and I use medium font size. That should be around 40%. Going to report back later to see if it saves battery or not.

Well I have been using around 40% myself for a while now but was reading somewhere that auto brightness is better but I wasn't sure how accurate that information is.
Does the font size have anything to do with battery life ? I have it set to small at the moment.

Auto brightness only works if they do it right, which is to say that it properly sets brightness for a given situation. (100% outside, 0% in darkness, and properly scale between the two extremes)

Yes but on this device is it worth using will it save you more battery life then just say manually setting it at say 40%

For Auto Brightness i use the App "Display Brightness" from Market .

I'll have to take a look thank you

Auto brightness actually saves battery. I lose battery even faster than usual when setting costum brightness even when it's way lower than 50%
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

Really? I guess I'll do some testing do you notice a major difference? Cause setting the brightness myself I keep having to change it for when outside cause if to sunny can't see screen properly
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

I recommend using auto brightness. It really does save juice unless you put the screen on really really low brightness I guess but that sucks because you can't see the screen

how well the auto screen brightness works on your device?

After I bought my Mozart for 3months,I have realised that the auto screen brightness function seems like not working on my device at all, no matter under what condition, even in an extremely dark room, the screen brightness is still in very high level,it is painful...especially for my eyes, and it is kind of wasting the battery. Anyone here, experience the same?
Agreed, I have to manully vhange to e.g. high and then turn on autobrigthness then it stays high.
Same here with HD7, have to manually change the brightness.
The brightness on my HD7 does change, but it doesn't change much between bright sunlight and total darkness. It needs to change a lot more than it does.
All we need is a "sensitivity" slider so we can set the degree of change caused by different lighting conditions.

I think someone's a little lost... X10 is an Android device...
lol,maybe he is drunk....
anyway, just hope that there is a solution soon,or maybe this is a bug...it consumes heaps of battery. My mozart with light use, and it just barely last for 1 and a half day.60% of time on standby.

I have an Omnia 7 with NoDo and auto-brightness works fine...
This made my day. lol
Samsung Focus works great. Maybe its an HTC issue.

we're in the same boat. =(
send it in to repair
samsung focus had quite a bit of hardware issues related to screen and I sent it back. Now its flawless
dell venue pro surprisingly hasn't had huge issues
I could be imagining, but it seems to me that if i choose low, then turn on auto adjust, it does auto adjust but is inclined towards darker settings. Conversely when I choose hi and turn on the auto adjust, it adjusts, but is inclined towards brighter settings. Anyone else notice this?

works perfectly on my Samsung Focus. Though i do hate the manual low brightness setting, it is still very bright even when manually set to low. i m guessing thats an issue with all SAMOLEDs.
My Focus is not good at all using Automatic Setting. It's my Second Focus, and same results with both phones. Slow to change, and usually not enough adjustment when it's needed. Like, if I'm in bed with the light off, it does not go to lowest setting. If I do a manual Low setting, it gets dimmer. Same with bright. In very bright sunlight, it never goes to the Top. I need to manually adjust to get it all the way up. I was hoping NoDo would fix it, but it didn't.
Here it is bad.
I got blind every morning. Probably it would be better to look at the sun than look at my phone screen.

Yes, I had my phone next to my spouses. She had hers set to high, then set to auto adjust and I had mine sent to low then auto adjust.
In the same lighting condition my was ligther than hers, and was on the ligther side all around. Conversely, I switched mine to high and hers to low and it was the exact reverse.
So there ARE high, medium, and low auto-adjust ranges... Interesting. Thanks for checking that, I would've had no way to test that. Good to know.

works ok on mine but it never switches to low have to do that manually

Screen is draining the battery?

Hi, i just noted .. every time that i see the battery usage the most percentage is for the screen!! (41 % after 21 hours) is this normal??
i have disabled the animations and other effects leaving just the bravia engine
Yeah the screen is the biggest battery drainer by quite a bit. Try turning screen brightness down or put on auto if you havent already given that a go
Sent from my Arc using XDA App
Don't worry much about it, it's normal that the display is always on top in terms of usage stats, it's ON most of the time coz we are using it(unless for music wherein display can be OFF).
If you actually want to minimize the battery drain due to display, just set the brightness as low as you can handle(i set mine usually around 30 to 40% brigthness only).
I'm actually surprised that you have low display usage in 21 hours, you must be a very casual user only. As far as I can remember, my fone never last me a day since I bought it. Coz I used 3g/data most of the time, surfing net and messenger.
hmm may be a dumb question but, how i can set the brightness on auto?
I use the Power Control widget on screen. The three options are low, auto and full brightness so its just a case of cycling through each. You will know when youre on auto if you put your finger over the ambient light sensor you should see display adjusting

hmm on android assistant appears "Light sensor not avalible" .. it's possible that my arc doesn't have the light sensor, it's a prototype after all
Not sure mate, maybe. Have u tried a reboot?
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
Yep still "not avalible" ..
A last question, this arc (just as i said) it's a prototype, a very complete prototype. I just wanna know if this device is Sim unlocked (being a prototype). Or if the bootloader unlock can unlock the SIM too, i want to change of carrier.
please tell me when your battery is almost at the end, check how long was your screen turned on? i get around 4 hours, brightness 30-40%, with auto rotation, bravia off...

Battery Saver

Hello all
I'd like to hear from you what battery saver do you use. searching into the market I've found green power, juice defender and so on, but which is (for you of course) the best one?
I'm looking for something that allow me to turn off data connetion when the screen is off and turn it on after a specific amount of time for gmail and other programs notifications.
I'd like to hear your opnion.
thx in advance
regards
As far as I know, Juice Defender would be a good choice.
SetCPU is very nice:

Neither.
I tried juice defender and it seemed to use more battery on me. I just use setcpu and turn of only on mobile data in phone settings. data switches of when phone a sleep.
you should install tasker as this can do pretty much anything you can think of.
i run a task that runs each time i unlock my phone and it sets the screen brightness to 15%. this will save alot of battery as the screen is the biggest killer.
nice 8) thanks, I will try!!
cheers

What about when you are in direct sunlight?
Doing anything manually is not an acceptable solution for me. Only thing that works is editing brightness levels within framework-res.apk which would allow brightness to go under 30% (which is the lowest if backlight on auto).
I have another Tasker task via a dock icon that sets the screen brightness to maximum when I need it. When I receive a call the brightness also goes to maximum automatically.
Thanks brivs

Autobrightness bug

Hello little birdies.
I am having an issue with my auto-brightness and I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.
Whenever my auto-brightness shines through the power of the sun (goes to 100%) it seems to get stuck at full brightness and my already not so good screen-on time takes a dip and I always notice this too late . I use the quick settings widget which is preinstalled and the A for auto-brightness is set but when I click it the screen immediately lowers the brightness, while the A for auto-brightness remains, and a vain in my forehead pops.
Furthermore after checking badass battery monitor it shows that my screen is often at 100% sun shadowing brightness. Today it was at full mutated power the whole time. Anyone got an idea as to what could cause this? Anyone?
PS. You might have noticed in the text above that I think the screen is really bright when at full power and that I can see the screen perfectly during a warm ball-soothing sunny day.
Yes, I have a bug with auto brightness too. It seems to deactivate itself. I have activated it a couple of times and everytime it deactivate itself at 100 % after some use.
I have an international HTC One X with the latest 1.29.401.11 update.
Glad to know I'm not the only one. I will soon factory reset my phone to check if it magically gets better.
I noticed this last night. My phone was blindingly bright and I didn't understand why it was set to 100%. I set it back to Auto and so far its still on Auto. i will have to keep an eye on this.
HTC really need to fire the monkeys they have working as coders. I guess if their software is not fixed up in next couple of weeks there might be a whole lot of people, me included, who will migrate to the SIII (given of course that it doesn't have a gazillion bugs as well).
I've been trying all day to recreate the problem but ist not doing it. I put my phone in the sun, I tried using the camera app, I used the video app with its 100% brightness setting, but the phone is still showing Auto brightness.
Any ideas on what triggers 100% brightness?
I have the same problem with mine. It's just randomly turns off auto brightness
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I don't know either what triggers it. It seems to deactivate at either 0 % or 100 %.
I don't have many apps installed, if I just do some web surfing and put it to sleep, when I wake it up the auto brightness is deactivated, in maybe 1 of 4 times. Irritating.
For whatever reason i haven't been getting the auto brightness bug for the past three days. Not sure how it resolved itself since I didn't get any software updates.
If you watch a video you can change the brightness and will stick and not go back to your original settings.

No, that's not the trigger. I investigated that on my phone and found no link.
I take that back. You are right! It seems the brightness setting in the movie play is the culprit. Although it doesn't always do it. One more thing for the chimps at HTC to fix.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Yesterday the auto brightness bug kicked in right before my eyes. I was browsing the web in total darkness in bed, when suddenly I was blinded by 100% brightness. So it's not just the movie player brightness that causes this issue.

Just got the autbrightness bug with the camera app. Everything seems to ****ing set it off now.. :banghead:

Yeah. That's because the camera jacks up brightness for outdoor visibility. They need to have an option to disable that.

I realize that, however it doesn't always do it. Also sometimes it will kick into 100% brightness without using the camera or movie player. It seems completely random to me.
mine is stuck at zero. started this morning and I did record a video actually.
auto just takes it.to zero.
but also, if i change it directly from the srttings menu, its not.effecting at all, just staying at the same previous custom level.
whrn using widget, just turns it to zero.
opened the video player, changed brightness level and its normal now. it was in the middle, the video brightness level
ok just edited this post and its malfunctioning again.. arrrgh!
Try an application that controls autobrightness, it should fix the problem. I would recommend Lux Dash.
So it is the widget, powertoggle.
Once I fix the issue by changing video brightness, it works fone, till I toggle the widget to use auto-brightness.
Several comments on PlayStore also confirms this with several phones.
Just don't use auto brightness from powertoggle. It is actually doffetent.from what OP describes, but.people may come up to this thread while searching, so I think it willbe useful to post here.

I too had the same issue, i tried to resolve the problem with htc but unfortunately they said that it is a software but and we need to wait for an update....

Jellybean Auto Brightness

So this is the issue I'm having and I want to know if its just me or what. On stock jellybean for the Sprint Gnex. When using auto brightness and going into a bright lit room the screen brightness will raise. But when you leave the room it will not lower the screen brightness. It sticks at whatever brightness level is raised too until you lock the screen and then it resets. I have verified the light sensor is reading the lux levels and such. Is this happening on other people phones as well? And if so is there any known fixes for it.

This is happening to me as well. I am running Paranoid Android 2.0 at the moment. I was in bed, completely dark room, and turned the brightness to auto. It stayed at the full brightness setting until i locked and unlocked again.
It does for me.....but takes a few seconds

Did it work properly after that or will it still not dim when leaving a bright room until you lock and unlock.
I have tried holding my finger over the sensor for like a minute and it still wouldn't lower. I'm trying to find a reasonable fix for it. I've read adjusting the levels in the framework apk will fix it but I haven't gotten that to work yet.
Crazy part is. If you use an app to make your own custom levels it starts working. Same thing with cm10 if you use the built in options to set custom levels. But for whatever reason is doesn't want to work on stock for me.

OK. So this is wild and awesome at the same time. I flashes the newest version of rujellin last night. I left auto brightness enabled over night. Woke up today and its working. How crazy is that. As soon as I disabled and enabled it to see if it took. Stopped working again. It has to be in the phone or the code one. When I say code I mean Google code.

I haven't used stock JB, but CM10's auto brightness is great, especially all the advanced settings
It seems to be slowly starting to work. Its crazy. Makes me wonder if some info is getting left behind when I do a full restore to stock. Thanks for the info. I just want to know its not just me.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Edit. I was wrong. It wasn't working that was the screen dimming before it locked. After a some reading and searching xda it seems that this is the default behavior for the auto brightness feature on android. I'm not sure if this is correct or not but the ammount of people saying that versus saying otherwise is greater so Im going to have to agree.
