Battery Saver - Desire General

Hello all
I'd like to hear from you what battery saver do you use. searching into the market I've found green power, juice defender and so on, but which is (for you of course) the best one?
I'm looking for something that allow me to turn off data connetion when the screen is off and turn it on after a specific amount of time for gmail and other programs notifications.
I'd like to hear your opnion.
thx in advance
regards

As far as I know, Juice Defender would be a good choice.

SetCPU is very nice:

Neither.

I tried juice defender and it seemed to use more battery on me. I just use setcpu and turn of only on mobile data in phone settings. data switches of when phone a sleep.

you should install tasker as this can do pretty much anything you can think of.
i run a task that runs each time i unlock my phone and it sets the screen brightness to 15%. this will save alot of battery as the screen is the biggest killer.

nice 8) thanks, I will try!!
cheers

What about when you are in direct sunlight?
Doing anything manually is not an acceptable solution for me. Only thing that works is editing brightness levels within framework-res.apk which would allow brightness to go under 30% (which is the lowest if backlight on auto).

I have another Tasker task via a dock icon that sets the screen brightness to maximum when I need it. When I receive a call the brightness also goes to maximum automatically.

Thanks brivs

[Q] [What determines a ROM's battery life?

Im currently on Pinky Desire 1.8, it seems good and stable and everything, but im not sure about the battery life. Feeling hesitant to change to a separate ROM because it probably wont be as stable, and besides, ive practically tried em all.
So im just wondering, is there some kind of inner deper tweak that ROM cookers alter to improve battery life? Or is SETCPU just a magic worker?
well, I dont know what could determin the battery life in a custom ROM, bt SetCPU is really good! just go to profiles, selet screen off, and go right down to 245mHz, really did the trick for me! 3 days of battery with heavy use (3g off when not using the phone)
Hi, the main things that eat the battery are the screen on/off time, it's brightness, wifi, bluetooth, gps, 3g and heavy apps like satnav. You should be alright with most of the roms even if some of them are less battery friendly

sorry, have to correct you on that, The screen does not eat up the battery! 8 - 15% is tiny compared to the massive 80% by Android System! thats why its called Organic Light Emiting Diode.. if you have a SLCD then its even less!!

Can not be very heavy use if battery lives 3 days. lol. Its desire after all...

I am familiar that a 15 quid nokia lasts for a week, we are talking pdas, they all have OS of some sort.
What about this setCPU, I haven't used it, I tought the phone was scaling the cpu by itself. What does it do differently?

The difference is that is forces the phone to use from X to Y CPU, not more. It sets a cap.
Anyway, I don't really believe in SetCPU. My logic says that if for an calculation it needs to run the CPU at 1GHz for 1 second, forcing it to not pass the 250MHz mark will make that calculation run for 4 seconds. So the battery will be spent again for 4 seconds (instead of finishing the job for 1 second and that's it, job done).
Still, that is my logic, not my knowledge

3 days with the fallowing; 3g off, wifi off, bt off, screen brightness medium (auto), auto killer (about 260mb of RAM free), use Advanced task killer widget everytime I'm about to lock the phone, and someimes auto killer, Live wallpaper on (white circles, a clock, but mine is set on "Midnigh" theme), All apps on SD, Turn off internet (hold power button, till a menu comes up, and press the option that is at the bottom, or use a widget, +-> Widgets-> System (?)-> 3g I think, (sorry havn't used the phone in a while ;/)
3 days, gaming, listening to music (headphones), and I'm also running NeoPhyTe 5.3 if that helps (not the battery saver, the normal version
hope this helps! good Luck!
Alright but then why did you got a desire, you use it at 250mhz, no internet, screen dark, if you say you have a spare handset for calls . Point being why would you get a powerful phone and keep it on standby

I use it at 245mhz in screen off profile so its on 1 ghz when using the phone and 245mhz when the screen is off. The screen is normally set on automatic when not watching a movie i last charged the phone on 31st and today it is at 14%.
Try calibrating the battery

I was using Pinky's rom too, I changed cause if its terrible battery life, it was eating 5-6% an hour with wifi off and in idle.... Now I'm using a custom baked r8 rom from Modaco kitchen, battery life is excellent!

and it is a smarphone but why do I need internet on while my smarphone is in my pocket?! or when listening to music or playing a game?! I don't need my weather widget to update it self every 5 minutes, because I can just look out the window and see, and also weather does not change that quickly that the app has to change it self (once a day is enough). I do go alot on facebook, internet and sometimes on the XDA app.. I never use my WIFI cos thats why I've got a 1GB data plan, for which I pay extra..
I do play alot, abduction, robo defence etc also, some more demanding games.. asphalt 5 I also sometimes go on utube, and the usual sites you'd go and to check up on the world
So, yeah, not really offline all the time mate

Tasker - Profiles

Hey everyone
Does anyone here use tasker or have any recommended profiles to help save battery life?

Try Juice Defender with 3g control enabled.
I have mine set to enable every 30mins with good results..
With LOTS of syncing enabled, i get roughly 1% an hour decrease whilst on standby!! Unplugged at 1am on 89% when i went to bed, at 9am when i got up it was at 81%...
Hope this helps!

Check WIKI on Tasker site, data profiles created by "brandall" from XDA
Tasker data profiles are better than Juice Defender
JuiceDefender has some annoying bugs in it at the moment (some like issues it has with lockscreen/display timeout) have been around for 4months+ and they still haven't sorted them out) so I've switched to Green Power which seems to do the job very well. Simple and no fuss.
Hi. Anyone here good at creating profiles?
I would like some help. If i want a profile that:
IF screen has been locked for 1 minute, i want WiFi to shut down.
And when i unlock the phone again, i want it to turn on.
But - i don't just want a "toggle wifi by hitting powerbutton"-function,
I only want this to apply if i had wifi on in the first place.
The reason i want this profile is:
If i forget to charge the phone at night, and have wifi going, i have 20% less battery when i wake up. Or if im at a friends house, connected to a wifi... well, same here. If it just lays in my pocket connected to X, i want it to shut down when screen is off. Saves alot of juice.

why dont you use tasker for that,
you can do almost anything with that app.
Creating profiles in tasker isn't a huge difficult task, its easy, Just use trial n error to see if it works.

Why don't just use the stock android checkbox in settings that's there for that? o_ô
Go to settings/network and wifi/wifi settings/hit the menu button and tap advanced parameters/wifi sleep politic/check "when screen goes off".
It does exactly what you described...

Well mine is working fine, no draining at all (wifi on 24h24 with this option checked and my phone drain only 1% every 5 or 6h if the screen is off). The thing is that it shut off the wifi only if no app needs it, so my bet is that those who have a battery drain just have some apps that don't let the phone going in deep sleep.

Hi, if you try LLAMA app instead I could talk you through it (as your not getting an answer you want).
As far as I can tell, LLAMA can do everything that tasker and locale can do but its free. It's also very good on your battery and can use cell towers instead of gps for location.

Not sure if I'm in the right place, new to smartphones. Got myself a Galaxy S2 and rooted it. Main point,
I'm using Tasker and I'm trying to have it set so that it's in Airplane Mode when I have an Alarm set so I get no calls/texts during my slumber.
So far, best thing I've done is the phone goes to Airplane Mode between 00:00 and 0600 everyday as well as when light levels are between 0 and 28 - not sure if the light levels are like, set too low.
So far I love Tasker but very little support online and Tasker Wiki doesn't really help. Trying my best with the trial and error method.
Thanks

Settings->About Phone->Battery->Battery Use
Get yourself rooted and grab SetCPU. I have a profile set on that which underclocks my CPU when the screen is off. Doing this GREATLY increased my battery life.
I also use Tom Hubalek's Battery Gauge Widget to help me monitor my battery. But, after using the RCMix S v2.0 ROM and calibrating my battery (and the mentioned CetCPU settings) I get a good day out of my phone with a lot of wifi and 3g usage.
Never had any issue so far with my battery... I am checking battery usage in the settings menu but it is not enough. Need to see what exactly using my battery 'cause its unacceptable to drain 60% in 5 hours... The only thing I can see that something is using (waking up) the phone even when the screen is turned off...
I am using SetCPU as well with Smartass governor... can not be the problem...
Also set a profile for screen off - i have it set to 245min-245max smartass. It seems to save battery more than just set on the main screen.

Have you tried changing the Wi-Fi sleep policy? Also, pocket mode and fastboot, if you have those options.
My SetCPU is set to OnDemand. I thought Smartass was unstable and gobbled more power than it should? I dunno, though, I use whatever the ROM developer uses for the ROM; I don't change anything.
But you're right, my phone has lost 61% in 14 hours. 60 in 5 is wrong.
I think JuiceDefender has some of the features you're looking for, though:

Ach, I have mine to 245-600MHz when the screen is off. Any less and my rom is lacky when the screen wakes. Had the same settings as you for other none Sense 3.0 ROM's though. MAJOR power saving. If you leave your phone downloading, though, the screen off profile kills the download rate.
Check it out, upload a file to your phone via wifi, turn the screen off and watch the speed plummet to about 100kbs!
EDIT:
Anyway, I had a massive power saving when I used this ROM:

Dialer
If you're using a gingerbread based ROM, it could also be the dialer. At least it is for me. Sometimes he just goes crazy and I have to reboot the phone. Apparently the dialer checks the phones proximity using the sensors again and again.
For further reference and solutions see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069251
Juice defender and Setcpu are in the same basket as task killers.
If you are using Smartass you don't need any profiles. Check your widgets, probably you have one which updates every second and kills your battery.

[Q] Whats considered good battery life when playing games?

I am just wondering what is considered GOOD battery life when playing games.
Using juice plotter, I estimated that after playing FF7 on FPSE for an hour that it uses approximately %12. This is with JuiceDefender disabling all connections except the phone at the same time.
This puts my total play time at about 8 hours continuously.
Just wondering what other people are getting.

That's very good. I play GTA 3 for about 15 mins and it takes up 20% of my battery !
And even Super Mario World on the Snes emulator I play that for about 7 mins takes up 6%
What's going on there?
How high is your screen brightness?
Maybe the PS Portable software is a battery hog.
Also do you have juice defender? With it disabled 1 hour takes up about 22-24% batter, with it turned on and disdabling connections, it went down to %12.
Either that or I'd call your cell provider back and tell them your battered FUBAR.
I mean I let my cell sit all night from about 10:30PM to 6AM, which in juicedefender is set as NIGHT mode and it turns EVERYTHING off, and turns on silent mode. I lose maybe 4-5% overnight.

I have half brightness with auto brightness on. I'll try juice defender and see how it goes.
Which Android version are you on 0.42 or 0.62 ?
Using the stock sony 2.3.4, so .42 I believe.
Try This program RootDim. Set brightness to about 25%, adjust slightly as needed. Then go turn auto brightness off.
You can set profiles so during the day, go into the program and choose a brighter profile. Not as easy but it seem better.
I've heard auto brightness actually uses more battery power from constant brightness shifting.

Aha I'll turn auto brightness off. So your not rooted or anything right ? so you have the sony ericsson processes running in the background?
Thing is I don't lose that much on stand by just like you 4-5% overnight so that's not an issue. It's only when playing games and wifi as well.
Oh no I'm rooted, and I removed all the crapware. Well removed some, froze others.
Need to be rooted to use rootdim anyways.
Then why not root your phone? doesn't hurt it.
Yeah I think I will. That must be the reason all those sony ericsson apps/processes that are running in the background must be using the battery up when I play games.
Just spend the $5 on Titanium Backup pro. I did, and $5 on Juice Defender Ultimate. Best $10 I've ever spent on a phone.
If you buy Titanium Backup pro you can freeze things. This means they stay installed, but cant do anything, if something goes wrong, just unfreeze it.

What is your setup on Juice Defender to get the best battery life ?
This is assuming you have ultimate:
Under STATUS:
Profile: Advanced
Under CONTROLS:
Mobile data: Enabled
Wifi: Enabled (You can use wifi prefered if you want, it just will ALWAYS enable wifi, wait for a signal, connect, or wait for a signal if theres none, then finally connect data. I prefer to not use wifi prefered, as it takes longer to connect. I'll just do it myself.
AutoSync: PING. You can have juice defender also enable/disdable background data. I don't because it's still experimental, I'll use it once it's stable.
Keep enabled: Disable both of these (not lit up) if they aren't already.
Bluetooth: Use it if ya have a bluetooth device, leave it disabled if ya don't.
Timeout: I don't use it, as I already have the settings in the android settings itself. And I have found it can sometiems cause problems. Try it out, but if it doesn't work, you'll have to reinstall JD.
Auto Brightness: Keep disdabled, same thign with android's auto brightness, uses more. I prefer to use RootDim. also, it gives an error saying a light sensor isn't on the Play, which is weird because it does. So the feature is still in beta.
CPU: This is an underclocking utility to save battery power. enable it, but don't touch the underclock settings, you're gaming performance will decrease. Underclock it only if your a moron for buying a Play to not use it for gaming. Go down to the governor setting and change it to conservative. governmors are explained herE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843406
GPS: Seems good but still in beta. Will wait for release to test.
Under Schedule:
Schedule: ENABLED
Frequency and Duration: These mainly come into play while the program is asleep. It will enable the device every so often, and keep it enabled for atleast a sertain amount of time. this is to let background data and sync get your emails and such. I have mine set to 30min and 30 seconds. So every 30 mins, connectivity will enable for 30 seconds. don't worry, if you have alot to sync for some reason, it doesn't cut off, it will stay enabled until it's done. (this is set on another setting.)
controls: Default
Night: Enable this and set it to whenever you usually goto bed, and when you usually get up in the morning.
Adaptive start end: I have mine set to +30m max, end -1hmax. This depends totally on you.
Options: Silent
Peak: I keep this disabled. Use it based on the instructions if you REALLY want it.
Weekend and Night(weekend): I don't use these, go ahead if you want to. I keep them disabled.
Under Triggers:
Battery and battery threashhold: I keep mine enabled and at 15%. This means if the battery hits 15%, all conectivity save the cell, is disabled. You can set this lower or higher if you want. If you're under the threshhold and you want to turn connections on, pull down your menu, click on the JD icon, a box will come up allowing you to enable conections until you lock your screen.
Charger: only AC is enabled. Can choose either of the others if ya want. USB would mean it takes longer to charge.
Screen: ENABLED
Options: Enable Ignore on Low Battery. this makes the battery threshhold thing work.
controls: default
Traffic: ENABLED
Traffic Threashhold: I have mine set to NORMAL 15s. What this means is that as long as theres an active connection, JD will not disable anything. But once the connection is finished, it turns it off and goes back to normal. so for my settings, as long as there is 10Kb of data every 15 seconds, it will stay connected. If it falls below that, disabled.
Apps: ENABLED
Configure: Interactive. Go and click on CONFIGURE APPS. This allows you to set up connection profiles for every app with 4 settings, ENABLED, ENABLED/SCREEN OFF, DISABLED, DO NOTHING. Enabled means connections will stay on inside that app. ENABLED/SCREEN OFF means if that app is running when the screen is off or asleep it stays enabled, I don't use it as it isn't very battery saving. DISABLED, when you go into the app, connections are disabled. DO NOTHING, if you go into the app, nothing happends.
Use ENABLED for apps that use the internet, browser, market, etc.
I never use ENABLED/SCREEN OFF for anything.
DISABLED: Use this for games, and other programs that don't use the internet that you use for long periods of time, such at FPSE, Mugen, etc.
DO NOTHING: Use this for apps that may not use the internet, but you're only going to use it fast. If you give these apps disabled, more battery it used to disable and enable connections every time you go into it.
LOCATION: This is really only useful is Wifi Prefered is enabled, otherwise even if this is enabled, it won't work. What this does is keep track of Wifi you have passwords to, and wifi hotspots. If you unlock your phone near one, it will auto connect to it. As well it keeps track of the range of the wireless signal, so it will know when it can connect. This takes a while for it to train.
After a day or so, you can goto the ABOUT tab and it will tell you approximately how much JD has increased your battery life by. On my X10 I was hitting 2.2x. But on Play I'm at about 1.8x. Then again it's a gaming phone, so no surprise.
Hope this helps!

What's the best energy saver for the Note ?

I amusing Battery XL at the moment, can't see that much energy savings..
Not using it
Seriously, though, there is a thread in the General forum that goes through many of the ways to improve battery life. I personally have found that battery savers just do not do what I want, and sometimes they use more battery when installed. I like to set it all manually. It is a lot of work to set up, but the battery savings can be great.
A lot of it requires root access, but I think this is a must in any case, even if only to be able to set up a firewall.

It's useless,
there're steps for saving batteries.
1. Reduce brightness to less than 30% during indoor, this should be enough for most people;
2. Turn off mobile data and use only wifi whenever you in wifi-spot
3. Don't always use live-wallpaper
battery saver apps are designed to kill apps/processes to reduce battery usage. however, this ends up being a waste of time as these apps and processes will often reopen themselves after. so you end up in a boot-kill loop for every app, which ends up using more CPU cycles which ends up killing the battery faster.
you're better off leaving these apps in the background since they dont use CPU cycles when theyre inactive.
if you want to save battery, turn off wifi and bluetooth when youre not using them. otherwise your device will constantly waste battery by trying to ping local wifi hotspots and bluetooth devices.
turn the screen brightness down and use dark backgrounds. on amoled displays, black means LED off which means no power consumption. white means LED on which means full power consumption (a white screen on an amoled display consumes more than twice the amount of power an LCD display would use).
dont use live wallpapers.
turn off mobile data when youre not using it. or if this is inconvenient for you, disable any widgets that constantly use your data (ie. weather widgets) or set their update interval to every 3 hours or so (lets face it... who needs to know how much the temp changes every minute...).
