[Q] ICS and boot anamation - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

In the good old day when we had so many gingerbread options, if your rom allowed it you could change boot animation simply put zip into system/media now that we are moving on to ICS that no longer works, I did some searching that a second file needs to be made or placed for it to work, I tried toolbox but most of those although they do work are droid themes or lame. So the question is was anyone able to change the boot animation with a ICS rom, without using toolbox, if so please post how you were able to do it. I love the android pissing on apple boot. Does any one have that anmation by chance most links I found were to megaupload which has been shut down.

Once you find the one you want just place it into system\media make sure its named bootanimation.zip
It works with dark side evolution ics. I know because I made a animation from scratch and I run it in my phone.

The problem with the bootanimation.zip file you were trying to use was that when I unzipped and took a look into the desc.txt file, the second line where it states what folder to run first was not named the same as the folder that contained the images. So when you were telling your phone to look in a certain folder it was never found. In case you run into other problems follow these basic steps.
You need to unzip it and make sure that it is filed in the correct order. When a bootanimation.zip is made it consist of a desc.txt and at least one folder with many or few .png images. The folder that contains the .png images must be named the same in the txt file. In order of course of how you want to see it run. All this is stated in the desc.txt.
And to put it on your phone just copy paste into system/media make sure that you can RW in that directory. Then reboot and your good.
Or an easier way just do adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media from platform tools in your SDK.
XDA upload wasn't working so here ya go!

Ok first off big thanks to cesar, I didnt get his post at first and didnt feel like bothering him any more as he has been much to helpful so in lamemans terms, you need it to be in a zip format when you put it into system/media.....within that zip should be a folder containing you pics and a text file (what ever the folder is called should also be referenced in the text file) I was a little lost when I saw boot and tried several different ways till I got it, and now I understand, also I think within the text file you can set the size of video on the first line. Again big thanks to Cesar.

What about power on sound?

tried changing boot animation with adb, pushboot, flashable signed zips.
new files get pushed/flashed to right location system/customize/resources but I'm still stuck with 'Quietly Brilliant' boot.
I was able to change my splash screen, but not the boot animation
What am I missing, or doing wrong.

I usually leave the original where it is but rename it to bootanimation.old then paste the new one in there. Then if you want the original back you just delete the new one and rename the original back to bootanimation.zip.

I usually use Root Explorer (found on market) to copy/paste the bootanimation. Couple thing you may want to check:
Is the bootanimation.zip compressed? If so the extract the files and re-zip using "store" as the compression setting.
Is the animation meant to be flashed or put in manually? Check this by opening the zip... if you see two folders: System, META-INF then its meant to be flashed... check the path to be sure its going to the right location. If you see 1or2 folders named part0, part1 etc accompanied by a TXT file called desc.txt, that is meant to be put in manually
Try the animations listed in my thread and if that doesnt work then post the animation your trying to load on my thread and ill look at it and see what i can do
This should come in handy. Thx!

[Q] Splash and boot animation; im not sure if i did it right...

Can someone test these? I wasnt sure how or which format the boot animations were supposed to be; the first set is in full resolution (1900 by 1080 methinks) I also compiled a GIF, and a smaller set of images.
I used one of the many wonderful splash converter/genertor programs to make the IMG.
There are also two free wallpapers that I made (altair+tron to give you an idea)
I've tried just about every tutorial for flashing both a boot animation or a splash screen and I cant get either to work. I'm running unrevoked, my hboot is newer than 2.x, I tried formatting my (2gb; dont have another one) micro sd to fat32, I AM rooted (s-off) I have sdk and adb and the drivers all installed correctly. I'm zipping uncompressed with 7zip, (aes-256), editing text files with notepad(but i tried with and without editing), pushed the files into media, local, resources, and one more(but im to lazy to look up where) all with no results except having a blank black boot screen. I have tried using terminal emulator, file explorer, and many other things.(that's all I can pull off the top of my head right now) Any help is greatly appreciated!
As of yet I have no idea if any of these work(well except the wallpapers ), because none of the other boot animations OR splash screens work either... Maybe tomorrow ill try flashing a new rom and see if that fixes it. If they DONT work, please help me fix them/let me know what I did wrong. (because I have 3 more i'd like to finish making) I've spent the last 4 days trying to make this work and I'm pretty frustrated right now...
Well there are no files to test, and if you used unrevoked, you have to create your splash screen slightly different, and needs to be converted from a .nbg extension, not the .rgb656 extension.

only the splash and wallpapers will work. the boots are all formatted incorrectly and it needs to be a series of .png's not one .gif.

this was sent to me by another member here. your desc should read 480 800
each frame of vid needs to be 480x800 png(yes you have to have it frame by frame)
hope this helps some
"quoted from pseudoremora"
After creating your bootanimation -- You need to make sure that a couple things have been done correctly for the bootanimation to 1) Work and 2) Be able to be flashed via recovery.
1) To make the bootanimation work
a. Make sure that after creating the animation itself that the .zip you create has NO compression -- (e.g You use "store" mode, instead of "normal" -- both 7zip/Winrar have this feature)
b. Make sure the desc.txt file is properly formatted and has the correct folder names inside the file. Also make sure you have a carriage return (press enter) at the VERY last line of your desc.txt file
c) Make sure the .png filenames are somewhat sequential and organized. (e.g. BootUp001, BootUp002, BootUp003, etc)
2a) To make a flashable package
a. First create a folder to house the bootanimation and you'll also need to explicitly define the folder names that you want the animation to be pushed to. (e.g -- Inside lets say the "MyBootanimation" folder -- you should have three folders; they're names respectively are:: system/customize/resource
Inside the resource folder is where your newly created bootanimation.zip will go.
2b) To make the package flashable and work in recovery; you'll need a update-script file which should be in a folder called:: META-INF (ALL CAPS); inside that folder should reside, three more folders:: com/google/android/. The update-script file will go INSIDE the android folder.
So, to get this to work, you'll open the "MyBootanimation folder and inside it should reside to folders (system (and it's subfolders); which houses the bootanimation and META-INF (and it's subfolders); which houses the update-script). You need to select both files and zip them up in NORMAL mode, not "store" mode. This will create your new package, which you then need to sign via whatever method you use. I use command line and I'd like not to explain that if I don't have to.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i have been doing further reasearch and experimentation... at the moment im waiting for my phone to boot and test the animation.(it failed) I found scripts for gimp that auto crop(with w/h and x-y offsets)/resize in batch so that can save lots of time there.
I'll follow your instructions and see how that works. Should I make the files inside system? (customize/resource) I'm currently running Kings UNleashed GB R3 NEON if that changes anything... i have HBOOT 2.10, and no ENG extended fastboot commands as far as I'm aware. Amon Ra supersonic-v2.3 recovery
If im successful in making the signed working file then ill post it up here =]
Okay, so I was unsuccessful... It installs properly, but the animation doesnt play; it black-screens, then finishes booting... help? I'll attach the whole signed zip so you have exactly what i have.

Installing a boot animation

I am trying to change my boot animation on cm7 and have tried to change it to a pc36img file and it says parsing file. I also have tried to move it into the systems media folder using rootexplorer but I get a message stating its a read only file. I tried changing the permissions and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Im sure Im missing something here.
On root explorer, press on the top right where it says "mount" before you paste, it'll let you paste it.
Then just set permissions.

You have to make sure that you moved the file to the correct place, that the permissions match the original's, and that the boot animation was built properly. Try another and see if you get the same result. If you do, you're doing something wrong. If it works, there's something wrong with the boot animation you're trying to use.
You said it was a PC36IMG, so I'm thinking that it's the file. Usually boot animations are either moved manually or made into a flashable zip - splashscreens come as PC36IMGs. If you can attach the file, I'll take a look at it for you.
Sent from my Evo + MIUI using Tapatalk!
If you're manually placing it in the /system/media/ folder, which is what I recommend doing, then the file needs to be named bootanimation.zip and contain ONLY the png files and the required txt info file.
As plainjane said, splash screens are usually what are flashed via PC36IMG.zip files.

FYI, NEVER delete anything from your system folders that is currently working until you have a replacement that you know for a fact works. I usually rename the file with (backup) appended to the file name. That way I can go back if the file I am replacing it with is junk.

Uhh.....what?
1. Place the bootanimation.zip file below into /system/media/
2. DO NOT change the name at all.
3. Move preexisting bootanimation file somewhere into your SD card so that you don't lose it.
4. Then reboot your phone.
I know for a fact that the file is a good file because I've used it before. If your phone still screws up then you're most likely not putting it in the right location. The zip file size is just under 5MB. So make sure you have at least that much space free in your phone's internal storage.
I included thumbnail previews of the bootanimation. (I don't remember who created this bootanimation but it was not I.)
Edit: I think it was Dysgenic, or something like that, that created this bootanimation.
What i was saying is it doesent matter if you delete all boot animations and cut your phone on. It just defaults to a very simple android one... And that i had got it workin.

[How To] Change your Bootanimation

Confirmed working on T999, and i747
Unfortunately as some of you may have already figured out, changing your boot animation isn't as easy as it used to be.
I've searched around and couldn't actually find a decent tutorial on how to change them for rooted/stock Samsung devices.
Therefore after moderate amount of trial and error, and the much needed help of a few others, I've decided to create a small "How To" for Samsung devices.
****************************************************
So the basic bootanimation editing
Get the bootanimation.zip file that you want to use (or create your own)
Unzip it to verify a little information is correct
Open the desc.txt file > you should see something like this (numbers will vary)
700 1116 18
p 1 0 part0
p 5 0 part1
Whatever bootanimation you use, make SURE that the number directly after the "p" is NOT 0 otherwise you will enter a never-ending loop.
You will probably also need to edit the dimensions in this file. (in the example would be the top line 700 1116 18)
From playing around with a few animations, somewhere in the ballpark of 480x800 and 720x1200 seem to be working pretty well, but pending the images you may need to play around with them to make it work for your phone.
Once you've set the loop amount and fixed the dimensions, save the desc.txt file, re-zip the file (make sure to include part0 and part1 and other folders if you're creating your own) and transfer it to your phone
[alternatively, adb push to system/media]

*********** MAKE A NANDOID BACKUP ***********
‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼
First:
Navigate to system/media and either can either A) Delete the original bootanimation.zip located in system/media or B) simply rename it to something else (ex. bootanimationBAK.zip)
Using a root explorer of some type, move the new bootanimation.zip file in this folder to replace the original. [mount r/w]
And then...
Using the root explorer, navigate to system/bin
you will be working with 2 files.
*First find a file named "samsungani" (no file extension) and delete or rename it (ex samsunganiBAK) [mount r/w]
*Secondly find a file named "bootanimation" (also, no file extension) and rename this file to "samsungani" without the quotation.
OPTIONAL...
I personally hate T-Mobile's bootup/shutdown sounds.
While we're in the /system folder we can disable or remove them completely.
*** Navigate to system/media/audio/ui
You will be working with two files here again.
Look for "PowerOff.wav" and "PowerOn.ogg"
*** Rename them to something else or simply delete them. (ex. "PowerOffBAK.wav" and "PowerOnBAK.ogg"
And finally...
Change your system to R/O and reboot your device.
NOTE: if your bootanimation winds up not playing, and you get a blank screen until the device boots up completely, verify that the images in part0 and part1 are in .png format.
****************************************************************************************
This is the reason I had to figure this out. For those of you wanting the Nexus 7 bootanimation, I have this working on my phone at the moment.
So far, this is only confirmed working on the T-Mobile GSIII however *should* work for all variants.
please let me know what other Samsung devices this also works for.
Confirmed NOT working for: I9300, L710, i535. - if you figure out a way to get this on your device, let me know and i will add it!
*** If you get this loop and are unable to navigate to folders, attached is a flashable zip for a samsung bootanimation hopefully it helps*** < thanks to billard412 for this

Althoug I am not impressed with Nexus 7 boot animation. Going to ROM Toolbox to pickup something else.

AT&T I747 only has the qmg file in media. Also the local file is there, but placing the file in there does not do anything. Still uses the qmg file.
Would need to have a kernel that supports boot animations in order to change this one.

Custom Boots

Have a nandroid backup just in case something goes wrong, Ive softbricked before many times actually just for trying to change a bootanimation. It can happen.
If you already have been using data/local for install location and its working for you great. I just noticed that i used my steps below but left out changing installation directory, so ive been installing to my data/local and my changes have been taking effect. After installing bootanimations i noticed my location was data/local then i went to change it to system/media and install a animation and nothing changes. So i am using data/local now as my target, im guessing if i were just to delete the boot zip from data/local my system/media bootzip will play only because i have a bootanimation.zip already installed to that directory as well, im not going to try it yet but maybe on a rainy day with downtime on my hands ill try it. But after all said the locations of install are working just fine, in the OP instructions are just one way of setting a valid default installation. Im guessing which ever location you started using first is the location you should continue to use.

INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
NOTE:"Before using romtoolbox"Open romtoolbox go to bootanimations, press your menu softkey, press install location, change common locatioms value to /system/media/ select ok. Now If you are using a stock rom but a kernel that supports boot animation (and you are rooted), using rootexplorer or a similiar app go into system/bin. Find samsungani and rename it to samsungani.bak. Now find bootanimation in system/bin and rename bootanimation to samsungani. Thats it. Now all bootanimations correctly placed in the system/media will work upon boot... "
After the above has been setup on your device you can now navigate to your gif file in a file explorer app. Once you click the gif file window pops up and use gif to bootanimation, then choose to install..
or
ONLY IF YOU ALREADY COMPLETED THE STEPS ABOVE;
If you already completed the above steps with naming samsungai to samsungani.bak, and bootanimation to samsungani in the /system/bin, and changed location install to /system/media/ then you can download the bootanimation.zip and manually copy paste it into /system/media/ via root explorer or you could even open romtoolbox goto bootanimations then choose local tab then find the bootanimation.zip click it then choose install, then reboot your phone.
Because this site has bugs when uploading i have to name bootanimations over and over again (they get overwritten) so you have to rename the bootanimation after downloading to bootanimation.zip

If you already have been using data/local for install location and its working for you great. I just noticed that i used my steps above but left out changing installation directory, so ive been installing to my data/local and my changes have been taking effect.
Btw im on kuban2.1, stock FI27 , init.d support enabled
