Hey guys. I seem to have a unique issue.
I am with T-Mobile UK, and when I activate my wireless hotspot', it doesn't connect, but rather just sends me to T-Mobile mobile broadband page which demands payment to use tethering.
When I had my iPhone, I used to be able to wireless tether without this prompt. Also my family have exactly the same contract on the same price plan and they can tether with no problem.
I am rooted but haven't managed to find a market app that works! Help please as this is quite important to me.
Thank you

I have no issues using the built in WiFi tethering for ics. However using Google chrome on Ubuntu I got the t mobile hotspots website but switching to Firefox it was still working. So I cleared the cookies in Google chrome and it worked again

I too have no issues using the built in WiFi tethering on ICS.
Currently running DARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.3 v7, smooth as butter, no issues at all.
What ROM are you running?
Right now he is running juggernaut 5.0 with no issues but he doesn't want to upgrade to ics due to t-Mobile locking wifi tethering unless you pay for it.

I agree. It's like I paid for my data, now let me use my data the way I want to. All carriers are the same way. It's not like streaming video from the same source on my computer uses more bandwidth then on my phone. Carriers are too greedy anymore.

You also can just install the ICS ROM (official) from t-mobile and root the device. Then just use Titanium Backup to uninstall or freeze the Tehteringprevisional and you will be good to go. No custom rom need...that is unless you want a custom rom.
But hell, paying twice for the same UNLIMITED data is not being cheap...it's being STUPID!! I only wish I lived in an area that has city wide wifi...then they could just keep their entire phone plan and I would just pay for wifi (skype calling, etc..) through my property tax bill...I would support that!
The cell carriers are just trying to nickle and dime you in every way, except they don't charge just nickles and dimes...they charge $15, $25, even $50 for services you are already paying for. Once they have you hooked on the service, then they change the terms..."yes you have unlimited data, just not unlimited HIGH SPEED data". Plus you are forced to have a data plan!
Damn, sorry, I just stepped up on that soap box and lost myself....back to your question...yes just root and you will have wifi tether in ICS official and custom roms
Yeah. And I was joking lol. I don't pay for mine either. He told me to tell yall thank you by the way.

Hey guys, got a couple of questions hopefully you can help me with. I've moved out into the country and there is hardly any ISP's out here. Only ones being the satellite ones. With that being said, I have verizon unlimited data for 2 more years and I was wondering, if I plan on using this as a daily driver for tethering on my computer, can I call verizon and tell them I'd like to pay $ a month for tethering? Isn't it like $20? Would I be limited on how much data I can tether? I'm trying to do this the right way if possible, I don't want them to cut me off or anything like that.
i JUST got 4g signal today at my home (guessing they updated one of the towers out here
Thanks!
You should be fine tethering on unlimited w/o a tethering plan. Verizon actually got in trouble with the FTC for blocking it on LTE. I do it all the time.

Alright, I'm guessing your rooted correct? While I'm gone my wife will have to be using her 4g but she does not want me to root her phone so were using an app, thats mainly why I was asking. Thanks for your reply!
Try tethering using FoxFi from the play store. See if that works ok for you.

Incorrect. What the FCC slapped them on the wrist for is having third party tethering apps blocked in the Play Store. Per the FCC, Verizon is still permitted to charge C block (LTE) customers on an unlimited plan a separate tethering fee, regardless if they use a third party app or not. What they are not permitted to do is have third party apps blocked from the Play Store, or charge tiered customers for tethering.
For those still on unlimited plans, everything, save for apps no longer being blocked, remains the same as it was before. If they somehow detect your tethering, they can charge you for a tethering plan or drop you altogether.

This is what I use (and I am not rooted).
FoxFi doesn't seem to work on the Verizon version. Problem is that the Verizon version gets locked down so rooting may take a while. Hopefully someone will find one that works.
EDIT: Bluetooth tethering works, but it is a fraction of the speed. 10% at the most.
Edit 2: Been spoiled with Paranoid Android. Looks like root is required for free WiFi tether to work with KitKat devices.
I am not buying this phone until it is rooted because of this.
If there is a workaround, I am 100% buying this thing ASAP.
So... Anyone have some ideas?
No wifi tethering yet, but using FoxFi/PdaNet for USB tethering works fine for me in the meantime. Speed is fine running it that way.
Well excuse me guys but I think I'm missing something here. What's wrong with tethering? The default settings for tethering works fine with me without any other app.

Ops my mistake. I though you meant the feature in general is not working. Now I understand, it's working but with extra subscription while on Verizon. I'm not on the same network so I don't have such issue.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Regards,
Don't know if it's any use to you but on Three in the UK you have to pay for tethering or it blocks internet until you reboot the phone but I found that it can't detect the computer if you're using a linux distro. Worth a try with a live disk/pen if it's just for browsing etc.

Theoretically if you had root, do you think there's an app that would work in Infrastructure mode? I'm on Sprint so root isn't a problem but I had awful tether problems with my old M7 when it went to KitKat and I had to revert back to keep my old android-wifi-tether install working.
I'm on T-Mobile and purchased clockwork mod tether. DOESN'T work on HTC ONE M8. Would really like to keep this phone but I must have working tether, where I live my cell phone gets better service than the local cable provider!

Have you guys tested this one out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter
Works great for me on 3UK now that the new tariffs allows only 2GB of tethering. I've done over 5GB this month.

Tmobile gives you 3GB of tethering for free. They don't block the native tethering at all. After you reach the limit, tethering would redirect you to a Tmobile page. Internet services like Dropbox or League of Legends still work even though you've reached the limit. And Facebook, I believe. =.P
But I don't use any tethering apps, and I'm on Tmobile. Is there a reason why you're trying to use ClockworkMod Tether?
EDIT: I forgot, that's on their $20 data plan, the unlimited-no-throttle plan. I don't know how the native tethering works on other plans. Hmm...

Anyone know how to? I don't really want to root, I just want to be able to take advantage of my unlimited data.

On the Note 3, the process was to just create another APN with fast.t-mobile.com and ipv4.
Not sure if its the same process with the M8 though.
I also used PDANet on the Note 3 for unlimited tether to my computer and other devices such as Xbox One and PS4 etc...
I will be looking into this more soon as mine gets delivered today.
Last time I took advantage of my unlimited data with tethering hack, I was doing about 90/130GB a month on TMobile.

I tried to do it earlier, but it wouldnt let me connect using the new APN. It would just revert to the default one. Anyone else try it?
This is the solution I came up with: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715450
The problem is that you won't be able to modify /system/customize/ACC/default.xml to change the APN that the built in tethering app uses without root.
Yeah your not doing it without root.
T-Mobile HTC One
This might be a silly question, but is there an unrooted M8 somewhere that would allow me to get around the tethering surcharge? Maybe the developer edition, GPE, or an unlocked device from another carrier?
Thanks!
Good luck with that.

Try assigning static IP client side if your router allows that, else assign it by mac.
