I just got my galaxy nexus today from Google. I inserted the at&t sim card that has been in my iPhone 3gs since I got it 3 years ago. The phone is working fine but HSDPA:9 is shown under "mobile network type" in settings. Do I need to do something to enable hspa+? Thanks!

Worry not. If your provider supports hspa+, and you have the 'h' icon, you have it. If you need to make sure just download and do a speed test.
no just put the sim card in and it'll work.
go to settings -> about phone -> status
it should say HSPA/HSDPA or some sort.
If you still have any doubts, just get a new SIM card.

That is true. If you have a really OLD SIM card, it may not recognize the technology. So it's best to keep your SIM card up to date as well.

Have not been able to figure it out, I've been on HSDPA:9 since I got mine.
UNKNOWN = 0;
GPRS = 1;
EDGE = 2;
UMTS = 3;
1xRTT = 6
EVDO_0 = 7
EVDO_A = 8
HSDPA = 9
HSUPA = 10
HSPA = 11
LTE = 13
HSPAP = 15
On average I've seen 6-8mb down, 2-4mb up on HSDPA:9... so I wonder it HSPAP would show faster... "supposedly" I'm in an HSPA+ area here in NJ, but my signal strength on HSDPA:9 is -93db.
Here's my Speedtest on showing HSDPA:9:

Had no idea about those numbers but VERY good to know. I saw HSPAP:15 on my About Phone once and it was very interesting, I obtained speeds of ~10.6Mb ish.
Try calling AT&T and asking them about what data plan you are on. Also u might need to register your IMEI number with your provider

Yeah, they're the category numbers in the include file of the android source, the number itself has nothing to do with the bandwidth size, its just a network-type category.
Thanks for the replies. I had to go to the AT&T store so they could update my data profile since my 3gs didn't have HSPA+ capabilities. The CSR changed my data profile and then since the IMEI for the Galaxy Nexus didn't show up in their system, he input one for the Atrix since it is an Android that does have HSPA+ capabilities. I haven't noticed much of a change yet but then I haven't had much time to mess with it. I might try making some APN's and what happens. BTW, I was able to keep my unlimited data!!

I just swapped my SIM at the tmobile store and now getting HSPAP:15

My connection seems to swtich from 3G to H a lot. A second ago it was HSPAP:15, then went to UMTS:3. I find this rather irritating. My speeds have been subpar, not to mention how long it takes to actually connect to the wide world of the intrawebs.

You can try rooting it and then flash custom ROM like LiquidSmooth ICS and then flash Franco Kernel #175 and try different Radio Baseband.
Some say after flashing the UGLA4 radio baseband, they managed to see HSPAP:15 which is HSPA Plus (HSPA+).
NO, HSPA+ is just a network mode, enbaling faster internet speeds, call data, etc. it is automattically enabled, and if your iPhone had HSPA+, or anything better than 3G, then you'll get HSPA+ in that phone, aswell

I really want to keep this phone, so please help me out, lol. I am in an extended network area for Verizon. My Gnex drops 3g and it will not come back for hours or longer. The phone will show a signal, full bars -75 signal strength, but the 3g icon will not be there, so no email, speed test, web browsing.
I tried two gnex's and sim cards. The Rezound I have works perfect right next to the gnex, so I don't know what to think? They are both on the same prl. I called verizon, but they are no help, pull battery, factory reset, ect. I tried all the radio's I can find, tried three roms.
I am at a loss, if I can't figure it out I will be forced to live with a rezound for the next two years, help please, thanks.........Brian

Shot in the dark here, but did you enable Data Roaming in the Mobile Network settings? When I was in Indiana a while back (when I still used my Nexus One on T-Mo) it wouldn't use data until I turned on roaming. Which is kinda silly, because that setting is meant for international roaming, but then again America isn't a typical wireless market.
Yes, that and automatic, tried lte/cdma, and cdma only. Tried all the normal stuff, pulling the sim card, ect. It is weird these phones do this, but the rezound just plain works.........
Nothing? Amazon just sent me a brand new Rezound to try, but I really like the gnex, but I need good data. Thanks..........Brian

Automatic is the right setting.
Radio could matter.
LTE/CDMA shouldn't matter.
ROM doesn't matter (at all).
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone information and post a screenshot (scroll down just enough to move the IMEI/MEID and your Phone number out of view to save yourself from some post-editing).

I have the exact same issue. I live in a 3G Extended Network area. Data on Droid X worked fine. Got Galaxy Nexus knowing I wouldn't have 4G (3G has been perfect for me). I was out of town when I got it in a Verizon Network. Drove home and...well...no data on Galaxy Nexus. Told Verizon tier 2, and they said it was a "known issue". I've flashed all radios and combinations and nothing has worked yet.
There isn't much you can do, but I bet if you petition/complain enough VZW could actually expand the network. Get others in your area to call in about it. You can't really blame the phone, even if the Rezound is working correctly.
Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. I'm also in an extended coverage only area and tend to have 6 or 7 hour stretches of no data. I've gotten two nexuses and neither has been better than the other. Previously had a Droid that never lost signal. As far as getting them to expand their network here, it won't happen because of some stupid municipal law in the county I live in that only allows a certain number of wireless providers and vzw was late to the party. In my case, I'm holding out hope that my situation will improve when the provider here (Cellcom) lunches their 4g network in q2 since they are one of the rural roaming partners for verizon.
This is not normal right?

Which data should i get with att?
My account was (re)provisioned with an iPhone 4, and I'm seeing about double the speed in downtown Silicon Valley since going from my N1 (~1.2Mbps) to the GN (~3Mbps).
Figure whatever ATT's doing, they want iPhone people to be happy...
try downloading a different radio
Get an imei from a lte att phone , call att tell them your switching phones and you need to be on an lte plan. You obviously won't get lte service but you can use the PTA apn which seems to be the fastest. Att can only provision your plan for 4g hspa or whatever if you have an imei of a 4g phone on the plan. I copied a skyrocket imei off YouTube , called added it ,switched plans and now I get between 6mb to 9.5 mb in NY

I did this. I gave them a skyrocket IMEI. They made my plan $30 bucks for 4G LTE. They also gave me a LTE sim card i'm able to use PTA. My internet has increased but at the same time its not stable. I get 3-5mbs but sometimes I don't even get 1mb.
Hmmmm maybe I should try a different radio?
I haven't noticed any speed changes from switching radios. I've tried 5 or 6 I think. I'm currently using the ugla4. It the speed changes your noticing probably have to do with not being on the hspa+ network

Actually, i'm noticing increase of speed and its becoming more stable with PTA. I"m actually pretty happy with it so far. I averge 3mb-5mb.
its alot better then before now I have 3gb of usage now instead of my old 200mb. its good

It just has a 4G logo, but i saw a video of someone else that had a 4G logo with LTE over it. Am i on lte? The closest lte city (on the at&t coverage map) is out of state for me, so i was unsure if i was on lte or not. The best speeds i've seen so far are 9500kbps down / 1200kbps up.
The reason i'm asking is because i think i found a way to disable lte and force hspa+ connection. I created a new APN and entered the details i found online. When i switch to this alternate APN, the 4G logo is the same, but my speeds are different (5000 kbps down instead of a consistent 9000+). When i switch back to the default APN my speed goes back up to 9000+.
Will using this alternate APN which yields slower data speed save battery for me?
That's HSPA, on your screen shot.

Hi Everyone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 unlocked, stock ROM and rooted. When i used the phone with Rogers it showed 4G. Now with Bell it shows H+.
I am ok with H+ because as i understand this is very similar to Roger's 4G. However, I have never gotten LTE on my phone.
Is there a way to enable this? I have checked the APN settings and they seem to be correct as per this forum.
Any ideas? Am i doing something wrong?
Thanks
Michael
I would make sure that the sim card you have says LTE on it (happened to me that they gave me the wrong one)
Outside of that I would recommend going to a strong LTE area and try to force LTE.
to do that go to your dialer
type *#2263#
Select LTE then LTE All, once you catch on to LTE go back into that menu and select Automatic
Have you confirmed your network speed with speedtest?
Thanks for the responses.
y2whisper: My sim card doesn't say LTE on it. It's a nanosim card that i had from my iPhone 4S. I was told the same sim card would work perfectly. I also tried that in the dialer and I selected LTE. It disabled my data and eventually i lost signal, no LTE signal came on. As soon as i put it back on automatic, it connected back to Bell with H+.
mrhaley30705: i did a speed test. It registered my download speed at 4757kbps and upload at 2398kbps
How does this fair?
Thoughts?
I was originally given the wrong sim card as well. Took a couple days to realize it. Went back into Best Buy where I got the phone and had it replaced. LTE fired right up. As to your speeds, depending upon your location, you could possibly add a zero to the end of those speeds and that's how much faster LTE could be. Here is mine but my area doesn't have the best LTE speeds.

Bell uses different micro sims for lte than the one you used for your 4s. Bell stores sell em for 5 bucks, but you can usually get them to give it to you for free.

yeah it would work perfectly minus the LTE ability. yeah get a new sim and call bell. Some bell stores try to charge you a courtesy fee to activate it. don't pay it.
thanks everyone for your help.
Switching SIM cards did it. Now instead of 3000-5000kbps on 3G i am getting LTE speeds of 30000 - 42000kbps.
Thanks

I bought a Bell S3 I747M and unlocked it to use on Fido, had to use the right APN settings plus using this trick to get it work.
I just hopped on the Note 2 wagon from a GS2. It's been only 2 days, but love it so far. Only problem, I can't seem to be able to acces LTE even though i'm in an urban area where LTE is available. Coverage is good here with Bell Canada. I know with my GS2 i was able to go in the Band Selection Service Menu, to choose the band i wanted to use. Is there such menu with the I317M? Or is there another way to select LTE?
Thanks!
No toggle to turn it on or off as far as I know. Does LTE work in other locations?
Moved around the city with no luck only H+.
Are you using an LTE micro SIM with the Note2?
I worked as a cellphone dealer, you must be on an LTE data plan with a LTE sim card to receive LTE. Call bell to verify you have an lte capable sim card and are on an lte plan.

As long as you're on a postpaid plan with at least 500 MB of data /month, you are eligible for LTE with an LTE capable phone and micro SIM. Bell's LTE micro SIM card is labeled "LTE".

Thanks everyone.
After reading through this thread I too swapped out an old SIM for a new one. But my problem was calls dropping or going straight to voicemail and lte not working in areas but my husbands would work. Got the new SIM card yesterday haven't missed a call, connecting to lte is fast and steady and a bonus is my phone seems to be a little more snappier then b4 like when closing and opening apps or watching youtube videos. Thanks OP for making this tread or else I might not have figured out what was wrong with my phone.
