Put it in kernel scroll down and flash. The phone will not boot using this kernel unless your on Gingerbread, but you dont need it to boot. If you get stuck at any point just pull the battery and proceed to the next step after its back in.
But the moment the capacitive lights turn off or from a full off hold the power + vol up until you see recovery.
Scroll down a couple until you get Install zip from sd (off the top of my head) in that menu the first option is the sd card and the bottom of the list also has the internal sd. go to the rom and any other files you want to flash, upon reboot, and a long reboot it will be you will have the rom you flashed.
Be sure to follow any additional instructions from that roms thread.

You have 2 choices, flash the kernel with mobile odin and profit. Flash it with ODIN get a yellow triangle and profit. There is a third option that involves potentially perma bricking the phone.
One the Kernel is flashed boot to recovery, install zip from sd card, pick which one, find the file.

Hi,
I have been rooting for a while with my evo 4g which is basically just recoveries & zip files.
Currently I have updated to Calk's ICS Beta 3 rom with modem FC05. I have read some stuff here & there that talk about having issues going from a ICS rom back to a GB nandroid.
I have installed Kies opened Odin, looked at the Wiki here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
I just dont quite get in terms of flashing zips through odin. I keep reading people say to odin back to stock & then flash from there.
How do I do that? I looked at QB777's video on youtube, but it seems like PIT files arent used much at this point.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Rich
Ok, basically when you Odin back to stock, it involves flashing a .tar ROM from the pda slot in desktop Odin and not zip file like you would in CWM. Once you restore back to stock, you can find a .tar recovery, I personally use rogue which will allow you to have cwm-based recovery for flashing zips. All the links should be in development. Let me know if you still need help
Edit-what Odin does is it allows you to flash Roms, kernels, moderns, etc even if you don't have a custom recovery, provided that they are in the correct format, like .tar extension

so when i flash a tar, I go into download mode, open odin, point it to a stock rooted tar file that has CWR & I am back to stock ready to flash to something else?
Can you help me find those files? A stock rooted, CWR should do the trick.

Ok, so you go into a download mode on your phone, open Odin, plug in your USB cord, ODIN should recognize your phone provided you installed the right drivers. You're good if you get the yellow box that says 0 com, something something. The only box that should be checked is Auto Reboot in Odin.
The easiest way that I've been going back and forth between GB and ICS is to install the rooted EL29 .tar version here
http://little-melon.com/sfhub/SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-sfx.exe
You would need to extract the file until you get a folder with tar.md5 name. Example of the file I provided would be SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_PDA.tar.md5 once you unzip it. This is the file you would put on the PDA slot of your desktop Odin.
Once you do this, Odin will start flashing and be done in like 1-2 minutes and auto reboot. Do not do anything to shut down, unplug, or mess with the device while Odin is flashing or you may end up bricking it. Once your phone reboots you will be rooted and stock based with EL 29 modem and kernel, which is the latest official Sprint OTA. If you want to get a recovery after this, you would need to go back into Odin and flash a kernel that has a recovery baked in. Like I said I use Rogue and the link would be here for Rogue Stock EL29-
http://goo-inside.me/kernels/TeamRo.../rogue_ET-recoveryonly-1.1.4-rc0-odin.tar.md5
Flashing this in Odin you will get CWM-based recovery and can start backing up, flashing different ROMS.
Hope this helps.
This is very helpful. I am stuck at the SGS2 boot screen after flashing MIJJs Goodness 1.8, can't boot in to recovery, only download mode. How do I fix this?

Flash a recovery in download mode that I linked. It's rogue recovery

Just to confirm, using the files you had here, I open odin in download mode, choose PDA (check the check box) point it to the tar.md5 file, hit start & wait a few minutes until it auto reboots?
How do I flash the recovery? Is it also the PDA?
I have been flashing modems in CWR, not odin & I just want to make sure that recovery or rom itself, just PDA & nothing else checked (but PDA)?

Reverting back to GB ROM
I recently switched back from ICS to GB and did not have any problems with the change back. I simply went into my SD card manually took everything off except my chaulkins format all and my wifi tether hack. I then went into recovery mode and did a wipe all. Then went to zip files, ran the format all, then did an install of the new ROM and it works great!
I'm just making sure I'm doing this right. I have starburst ROM and android 2.3.4 with the EK02 modem.
I'm trying to flash CM9 from this thread. However, it asks to flash to StockCWM EL26. Can anyone give a step by step direction for flashing this through Odin, cuz I'm a pretty big newb. I tried flashing it earlier but then when I checked my phone the version still says 2.3.4 and baseband version is still S710.10 S.EK02 not EL26.
After that are the steps similar for flashing CM9 and gapps?
Thanks for the help!
PS. I'm a huge nub. I don't know anything...
Open ODIN, then load the CWM EL26 tar file under the !!!PDA!!! slot. Set your phone to ODIN download mode by first shutting it off, then holding the volume down button together with the power button. Once in ODIN download mode, connect your phone to the PC, and start the flash process. After the flash gives a green PASS, disconnect the phone. It will probably be off at this point, so hold the volume UP button together with power to boot into ClockworkMod. Follow the menus to install the CM9 zip. Once it installs, wipe cache and reboot. Enjoy CM9.
Be forewarned that this increments your odin count, and will give the yellow triangle on the load-screen. This can be reversed by using Triangle-Away 1.25 (search the forums for the apk). I was just told in another thread I started that you can also try using mobile ODIN to flash the CWM-EL26 tar, which will not cause the above annoyances.
EDIT: So I just used mobile ODIN, and it worked like a charm! Use mobile ODIN instead, to flash EL26-CWM.
I am trying to successfully flash a kernel through mobile Odin ....to be exact its the EL26 cwm that is recommended to use to flash new roms but every time i flash it through mobile Odin i get a black screen and nothing happens after the flash?
I've tried pulling the battery and even powering off the phone and back on again but still gets stuck on the black screen........ the file i use is the one on this site that has a .md5 at the end of it can someone tell me what im doing wrong?(gentle please im a noob at this)
Also the CWMR does flash i hold down the up+power button and im get into CWM but i have to restore my nandroid backup i made to turn the phone back on.....

If you're flashing the StockEL26CWM tar and are on ICS, it will go to the black screen because that kernel isn't compatible with ICS.
You'll need to hold VolUp and Power until it reboots into recovery. Don't let go of either button until you're in recovery.

You don't want to use ANY recovery on ICS. It has high risks of bricking your device.
Flashing the EL26 (which is a GB recovery) is what you'd want to do if you are upgrading your ICS or restoring a nandroid of a GB ROM. But the ICS ROM won't boot with the stock EL26 kernel because it is a GB kernel.
I downloaded the .zip file for the upgrade from alpha3 to alpha4 off CM's website, put it on my SDCARD, booted into recovery - looks like stock recovery, (following the steps on CM website) then applied the zip -> it looks like its doing something for about 20 seconds then the little android guy dies and has a red triangle with an exclamation point coming out his stomach. What am I doing wrong?
baseband version: FE10
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-SPH-D710.FD10-CL377892
You need to be using a clockwork mod recovery to flash, stock recovery will not work.
First make sure you are rooted.
Next use either Odin 1.85 or Mobile Odin to flash the EL26 kernel.
Upon reboot, go into recovery mode using volume up+power. If you miss your chance to do so, just pull the battery and try to get into recovery again.
Using CWM, flash per the install instructions.
so do i just odin the kernel back to el26 w/ CWM? the reason i dont want to do a clean install is because i wodnt want to wipe my data. If i odin to EL26 w/ CWM do i need to go back to gingerbread?? Or is there a way i can sat on ICS and upgrade?
what if i used this kernel? [NEW][KERNEL] FE16 Repack with ACS recovery

Do exactly what he said here... You're not going back to GB or wiping data. You're just re-flashing a CWM recovery. When you originally installed CM9 alpha 3, you used a CWM recovery. But the CM9 ROM re-flashes a stock recovery (which you can not use to upgrade from alpha3 to alpha4).
So all you do is Odin the EL26 kernel/CWM recovery image (phone in Download mode), and then you reboot and hold vol+ and power to get the phone into the CWM Recovery Mode. From there, you just install the CM9 alpha4, you don't wipe data or lose anything.
thanks man, it worked.
I am new to the forums and didn't want to make a new thread. I am having issues with the GPS (Maps App.) The app loads up i enter the destination i want to go to but it wont find my location where i am at. It just keeps searching for my location...
So i went ahead and downloaded another GPS app ( tele nav.) same issue. I was wondering is there a way to fix GPS issues on this rom? I would like to fix that issue..
anyone have a solution to fixing the GPS issue on this rom???
Please bring me back. I installed CM9 pre5 but forgot to update kernel to get CMW with 3 fingers and now I installed battery mod beta4 and phone justs loops.
I made a backup when I updated before installing battery mod but I don't know how to get phone back into clockwork mod since i didn't install kernel for it after CM9 update.
I need instructions to get phone back up please save me.
Thanks for your fast input...
The Cm9 update includes the kernel. Just three finger boot into recovery.

Great but what if?
wow that was fast and accurate, many Thank You Zeinzu. I did not know it had CWM on CM9 thinking you had to flash kernels like nyan 5 or shadow cm9 6.3.3 to get it to work.
If by any chance that 3 finger didn't work I would need to use odin to:
via ODIN
1.To begin, download the CWM 5.0.2.7 tar file from the link above.
2.Run ODIN and make sure Re-Partition is unchecked.
3.Click PDA and choose the recovery you downloaded.
4.Boot your phone into Download Mode. (Power it off and holding down the 1 key on the keyboard, press the Power button.)
5.Connect the device to your PC and once you see it connected in ODIN, hit the Start button to begin the flashing process.
6.Once the recovery is flashed, the phone will reboot
does F.Reset Time checkboxes need to be selected?
or
odin back to OFFICIAL SPH-D700-FC09-8Gb-REL.tar then I need to root it again? lost here never had to go back so just wanted to know from the Pro's...
Thanks m8 =)

Nooooo!!! Once on mtd (cm9 is mtd) do not flash another recovery.... there Is no flashable or .tar for cwm for mtd roms.. cm9 installed the recovery you should stick with (there is a touch recovery, but its buggy imo)
If you cantget to the recovery you will need the fc09 with victory.pit wth repartition an auto reboot checked...
Cool

Thank You Flashnoles you also saved me from bricking my phone.
I got confused into thinking I needed to install extra kernals on CM9 to get CMW but I followed Zeinzu advice and was saved. I was just about to odin a CMW.tar when I had my doubts and decided to ask the kind m8's of XDA.
Does CM9 stock kernal have the 3 Button Reboot or you only get that with Nyan Colonel v5 or ShadowKernel CM9 v0.6.3.3 because I try to do a fast reboot but keep getting volume going up or down?
I noticed when I installed the Nyan Colonel v5 it installed TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp) instead of CMW but I reverted back using restore-cwm.zip. Is this the "touch recovery" you were reffering to because I also found it buggy and was not confident using it for Recovery and tools?
So If a new CMW version pops up the only way to get it is to odin back to stock BML to install it then use Restore in CMW to get back to your saved Rom?
Could I use epic4g-fc09-sdcard-utility-v3.tar to temp bypass MTD and install CMW updates?
Thank You again both for your advice and great responses...

MTD uses a completely different recovery. The recovery is overwritten whenever you flash a rom or kernel. When thee is a new recovery, you will automatically get it when you update cm9.
