Well, it's been fun.
It was renewal day this weekend, here in the UK as many of you will know all our handsets are subsidised by the network operators. Therefore every so often we have the chance to "upgrade" our handsets, it is a merry dance. Once "out of contract", we can change operators, switch price plans, and get a new handset for "free" or a combination of any of these. It can all be rather confusing, but the long and the short of it is that I can get a shiny new piece of kit, so it's great.
Anyway, I've had the vario II on t-mobile in the UK for one year and now it's been chopped so I thought I'd leave my thoughts. It was good. Obviously I flashed it with jasjamming and more recently schaps plus several others. I reckon I flashed it probably 50 times, reinstalled settings and apps, a compulsive tinkerer I suppose!
Pros...
Full keyboard
High Speed Data on t-mobile was good and genuinely useful
TomTom 6 (with ext. gps receiver purchased on ebay for 30 quid)
Useable web browser (just)
Customisable with firmware flashing!
Amazing forum here full of helpful people
Cons...
BATTERY LIFE (it's appalling, there is no getting away from it)
Heavy as a hod of bricks
Form factor (too big)
------
So what did I go for...
Nokia 6120 Classic.
wtf nokia 6120?!
Nothing like going back to the dark ages
you should have held out for a couple of months and got one of these
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch_dual.htm
I myself have bought a new N95 8GB as my second phone.
Bingobob,
Good luck to you. You made the choice you want and that's all that matters. Never quite sure why people think that what they would buy/get is what everyone else should buy/get!
What did you do with the t-mobile device then? Sell it or is it up for sale?
WB
that's the thing, not sure. Flash it with something I suppose and/or use it as a TomTom or ebay it. not sure.
Well if you fancy offloading it and its not too expensive, PM me. I am assuming its in good condition? Also assuming that its unlocked, etc, and you have all the bits for it?
Cheers
WB
It;s also for me the end..
I bought a Nokia N95.
Ciao, Good Bye
Each to their own. Personally I have to stay with touch screen phones... from here it will be the Kaiser or some variant down the line...
Same here, I love touch screens.
Although I'm very happy with my hermes I'm waiting for the the touch cruise.
Well, I'm waiting for a 3G iPhone, no more WM6 device I think.
Same here, when there's a good offer for the iphone I'll ditch the HTC. But as for 3G, that's only a vague rumor, I wouldn't count on it.
I could never go back to a non-Windows phone.
Especially for a Nokia or an iPhone.
I've played with various Nokias over the years and I think that they are the worst mobiles out of any I've ever touched.
As for the iPhone, over-hyped, over-priced, and under-developed.
I'm HTC's ***** now.

They have to make one with 3G or it will not sell in Europe. Also needs mms.
i switched to IPHONE. and i am very stisfied.
i watched this forum for quite a while, but however you will patch the hermes, it will never come even near to the iphone. everybody tries to construct iphone-like UIs. so why not take the original one?

I've moved from my TyTN to an iPhone. I can't see myself going back to the TyTN anytime soon either.
iPhone ist great for design (friggin awesome btw ) and "OS" only (included internet browsing) it's really neat and user friendly.
Otherwise all the rest is total crap, most of the time technology wise
No 3G (TyTN has 3G+) a heresy for a phone that want's to be "multimedia"
Camera 2megapixel (same as TyTN, crap for both )
Bad autonomy (i'm connected on 3G with BBC on all the time for straight 34h without any problems)
No email downloading possible or push mail
So if apple re-considers and brings out a phone that has all those abilities yeah I would gladly change. Moreover, BBC or something equivalent is for me top priority
what do you think about the new htc touch cruise...?
The Iphone is personally not for me. I want to customize the phone when I want to.
Also no 3G is really a deal braker for me.
As to the UI I admit MS has something to learn from Apple but other then that no thank you.

That's the cool thing, you actually can. What interests me and has drawn me to WM was the ability to fiddle with it, do a bunch of hacks and tweaks etc. However, while the thing is very flexible and powerful it's "unusable". 3 seconds to exit from sleep, up to 5-10 after opening the keyboard to let it rotate screen and become responsive again, ...
Once you've tried internet browsing on the iPhone / iPod touch you just realise that WM's IE even with addons is pretty much the worst thing you could think of, only to be used in last resort, while I can be nearly as effective on the iphone than on my PC...
Guys are developing apps for the iphone at the same rate than here on WM6, and having a full Unix-based OS allows for even a LOT more possibilities than a mobile Windows version...
The lack of 3G is indeed a pain. But then, when I use it on my HTC it's by using it as a modem for the laptop, as there's no way to actually make use of it on the device itself...
If there was an official news saying that the European one would have 3G I'd wait. But I'm not dreaming and know there is VERY little chance. We'll know soon, as France will have them in a few days. But for now, the imported ones are selling like hot cakes, suppliers are getting out of stock all the time and prices go up as they have difficulties sourcing them. So I don't think not having 3G will bother anyone. Especially with the sky-high prices for mobile internet around Europe.
Anyone hear anything besides CDMA coming in Q1 ? I've been following all day nothing so far on any new models or anything on brands.
I've seen a bunch of phones but, all that Anroid crap... (sorry fanboys, I'm not a fan)
Did anyone else see anything ?
Nothing really new.
When an MS rep was questioned, he did say something like (I'm paraphrasing), "We're saving some news for a later date. Only if there was an event coming up dedicated to mobile devices in Barcelona, Spain where we could talk about this..."
Making a not so thinly veiled reference to the Mobile World Congress starting on February 14th.
I honestly didn't think there was anything exciting at CES. Dual core is nothing without the apps to back it up. As a former Android user, I didn't find anything interesting. Maybe that is because T-Mobile didn't announce a superphone and I will not break my contract.
They will drop a couple devices in February. Maybe in Spain.
Than again, sometime in the Fall.
Yea, nothing good, it sucks to be honest with ya.... It's not over yet (later date ?) but, I guess we'll see.
We CDMA people have to wait till Feb before we hear anything about a CDMA WP7 ? I feel like one of those (you know who you are) Verizon iPhone people, just waiting and waiting....
I'll have to admit, some of those Android phones looked nice just only if they had WP7 on them, it would be great.

It is over on Sunday (I think) and there are still companies that need to present. I believe that Sprint has yet to present knowing that AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon already presented.
Someone said that the HTC Trophy is coming very soon. Just passed the FCC with Verizon's banding.
But all of the Android phones have skins. Oddly enough, only one of them had Gingerbread and it is not even on a US carrier anytime soon.
I am not sure if there is anything new - as in the case you haven't yet heard of - coming on MWC, MS has a single stand at the event.
i was really expecting some aha announcements from balmer and his team. just some rattling on about nothing really, ahem xbox this and that. he's really looking old and tired now.
really expecting to see some cool innovations. maybe those projector phones with 12 hour batteries and lte connectivity ? well, no.
of course there are android phones everywhere (ya i'm a big fan) but expected more there also. one dual core phone. well, ok. if i get my nexus one, g2, g1, and wifes g2 all together, i'll have 4 cores really close to each other. woooo-p.
tell the truth i'd get more excited if there was some shazam new battery tech announced that let a badass smartphone run for a week on a charge that i'd be if there was a quad core handset.
tablets, good lord tablets everywhere ! and honeycomb is really going to be tailored specifically for tablets. sweet. nice to see a company making a specific OS for tablets.
things that aren't selling me:
tablets (too big for phoning, too small for real computing)
front facing cameras
barely usable batteries
gee-wiz dual cores/quad cores
kick stands
anything that isn't a micro-usb (c'mon already, standards!)
things taht would get me hot to buy:
LTE (the upgrade to this g2 with 6-7Mbps is pretty smokin fast, i want more though)
led projector, HD quality
720p that rivaled the iphone's (their stuff is really, really , really good)
a week long battery
waterproof
drop proof

Where did you read "The Entry level WP7 device" AKA HTC The Trophy just passed FCC banding ??
If it just got passed, it could be a few months before anyone sees it... Not sure I want the Trophy anyway, it's the lowest end model out of all current WP7 phones...
I'd rather have the Pro 7 (yea, the one Sprint is getting), I was hoping for something else on Verizon than just the Trophy.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, after 1 billion planned and millions so far spent on adveristing for WP7, Verizon and Sprint will not come to market with just 1 device each.

I want every year to hear some magical new battery that is taking over that will go from hours of use to 100's of hours of use but, nothing ever comes up. Yea, let me get a Quad core CPU on a phone that only gets 1.5 hours talk time, YEA !!!!!
Out of all the stuff they come up, they can't solve a simple battery problem ? WTF ???

simple? if it was so simple why wouldn't you or anyone else for that matter do it? I guess its because im an engineer and i know science that i find this statement ridiculous. Lithium is the best element for energy storage and that is already being used. This is because lithum's desire to give elections away on it outer shell (hydrogen ist because it is hofbrincl). It is really going to be hard to find something else that can work better than this. Battery cell architecture enhancements are they best way to go with this route until some kind of reaction proves better, but that can only go so far. my point, it is hard, and a new approach to energy storage will have to be solved for it to really get better so i'd quit expecting something.
ok enough of the science lesson, I was also kind of disappointed in CES. Honestly I might of gone back to andriod if there was a LTE, dual core, sim card based, high res, 8 mp with FF VGA camera, 4.3 in phone that had excellent 4G coverage and 2.3 on it but noting announced met that criteria.
I was also hoping MS would drop the flash surprise or extended limited multitasking abilty but that also failed to happen. Basically what I heard from MS was exactly what everyone already knew. Some apis that allow certian types of services (streaming music apis, chat, etc) to preform in the backgroud would of been great.
i'm walking away from CES like eh, but eventually an LTE tablet might be in my future.

The HTC Pro 7 the one thought, I could not find any actual proof of it going to Sprint, the only way we know the Trophy is going to Verizon because they offered it to MS Employees.
The Trophy just passed the FCC yesterday. The HTC Pro 7 (the other CDMA "7" phone) passed the FCC 10/25/2010 and is still not here.
If someone is counting on getting it very soon, I would be shocked.

Dude, calm down... I was kidding with that... We've only been with the same battery tech for 5-10+ years now ? I'm sure someone came up with something by now. I know it's not simple by any means, it just sucks that no one has solved it. Not even any proto-types or rumors, that dead on this subject.
Pretty soon, something is going to have to happen, phones get faster, need more power, phones get bigger for bigger batteries...Sounds like we are going backwards to me...

from a simple stand point i can see your stance, but once you know the technology it makes since. Solar energy is actually the leading cause for the push in energy storage, but maybe cell phones will help push that.
What i honestly think is going to happen id the evolution of the power mat from Duracell. When the guy who invented it was still at MIT and proposing this tech he also stated in the future it would be possible to get rid of the mat and transmit power OTA. This would be a future with no batteries in cell phones thus making them the slimiest they could possibly be. However what happens when you are too far away from the tower emitting power.
This is all just FYI stuff, but if you are interested in the future of batteries this is the answer.

Yea, very interesting, if it ever comes out, I read about that like almost a year ago, as it could hold the power, the possable problems coming out (to the world) could be really bad.
As for wireless power, cool but, at what cost? As I think about this more, someone has to pay for the power and no one is going to give power away for free. So a power system off of a tower someplace ? Never will happen, there are too many companies making money off the grid and they would never let it happen, even for small devices.
It's a nice idea over all, to have a longer range "power mat" type of system, one in your home, one in your car, one in your office so you can limit your breaks of constant power (kind of like plugging it in when your in those locations) but, then you go back to the battery tech. Try recharging your battery 5-10 times a day or more (going between locations) how long do you think your battery would last (after discharge and recharge 100's of times more a month) ????
Anyway, for Verizon cusomers... a Press statement or "event" coming on Tuesday... Said, releases, so maybe WP7 along with the iPhoney.

Thank god I am not alone with this. Front facing cameras are basically dead. Some old Windows Mobile devices had them, but I don't think anyone ever used them.
I am waiting for Microsoft to make dual core fully optimized for dual core, it might happen 2012 though. I could wait on that.
And for data speed, I would rather wait for HSPA+ (the one with a peak of 42 mpbs) on a WP7 devices, only because I have no plans of switching carriers (all carriers work here, so doesn't really matter which one I use). LTE is pretty cool and it is available in my area.
I am using the HTC trophy on Verizon. I went in to my local store and was asking about a charging cord (39.95 please), and i kid you not, the sales rep tried to get me to upgrade to an android phone. Im happy with my WP7, and have had android and didnt like it. So after telling the guy that i didnt need a new phone, i left. Now what upsets me is verizons lack of commitment to this OS. people want it, i want it, yet they only give you one phone (HTC trophy) with very low specs. My brother in law works for go wireless and his boss refuses to stock any WP& devices. And go wireless is essentially verizon. Thats is the companies stance on the OS. "no, no one wants that. Here, take one of these 45 android phones. They are way better. why? because they are android". Im so ****ing sick of all this verizon android basket. I dont want to switch to ATT to get a good device, but its making it look more and more probable with each passing day that verizon shafts the WP7 people. I know the kins didnt do so well, but thats verizons fault for requiring a data plan on a dumb phone. Point of my rant is this: i want something other than this trophy on verizon, yet they are making it so difficult to stay with them due to their constant hard on for android and their brief love affair with IOS. Another reason not to switch is i was grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan. Why must you make it so hard for me verizon!? I hate you, yet love your cell reception and unlimited data. Get more CDMA WP7 phones. How hard would it be to get that fujitsu number over here? not that hard i would assume. I would pay cash for that in a heart beat. Much like how i paid 400 some odd bucks the day the trophy came out for verizon.
/end rant
Amen, I feel the same way, if nothing is at least announced for Verizon by the end of 2011 I'll probably be going to AT&T because their phone line-up is better. It's a pity because I do like Verizon's service.
I'm not even asking for a new phone this year, I just want an announcement of a new phone. They're releasing so many Android phones per year, and they can't announce a new wp7 phone after half a year or so, it's kind of BS.
I emailed one of the higher ups at VW regarding this. I got an email and a call back from his assistant regarding my frustrations. Supposedly there will be new WP devices coming, but they wouldn't give a time frame.
Rumor on the net through a couple Nokia sites say that Verizon will be getting a high end Nokia WP, while AT&Crap and T-Mobile will be getting mid tier devices. I'm personally over HTC's battery life issues so I'm optimistic something better will be coming so I can finally make the switch from Android.
Do yourself a favour, if you see what you like on another carrier (at&t, Titan, Focus S, Focus Flash), check out the coverage and prices as best you can and if everything looks ok switch! Why sit around on a carrier that doesnt give you what you want, whether it be CS, coverage or the device you desire? Buy a prepaid phone, use it to confirm you will have coverage and if its a go make sure to tell vzw just why you are switching. Spread the word about your experience, and maybe in 10 years time they will pull their heads out of google's butt!!
That's probably because Verizon is Google's favorite carrier and gets more from Google than other carrieres do, just like Motorola will now be favored over other OEMs.
the deathstars cell service is awful where I live. Calls are always dropped, and the data plan is horrendous. If it weren't for those two things, I would have switched long ago. The only thing really keeping me with big red is the aforementioned unlimited data.

Regardless of what platform he personally prefers, in the end, he wants to make money, and he wants you to upgrade right then and there, and there isn't another WP7 device for him to offer you... what else is he supposed to do? lol
As a sales rep myself, I would attempt to figure out what you want, and get you the device that suits you the best. I'm no Android fan, but if I find out that you like Android, there is little reason for me to try and get you to buy into a completely different platform, no matter how awesome it is. Since you have the only WP7 device on Verizon, there isn't much else he could have done except tell you to buy into a different platform.
But the general idea of your topic, I understand, and its most certainly saddening to see how the market treats underdogs (not only Verizon). Though, I think you'll find that once the dollar signs start shifting toward WP7, the tune of most sales reps will also shift. They go where the money goes.
But when the rep tells me WP7 sucks like its fact and not opinion, that's when I tune out. And its sad because I feel that his behavior reflects on veizons opinion of WP7 in general besides, how are you gonna make tons of cash on a phone OS when you only have one model that supports it? Of course your gonna make a boatload of money if you have 19 phones that all have android on them
Sent from my mwp6985 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I agree in general that VZW has little to no interest or support for WP7 and hopefully this changes with time as I too have little choice for good reception and am grandfathered on the unlimited data.
Google, Motorola, and Verzon are The Three Stooges. I'm suprised so many people here seem to have missed that...

Blame yourself for the setup....going to the oem for charging solutions is a setup for fail.
Expecting a salesperson to backup an all but discontinued device (because you like it) is a second setup to fail.
Continuing to support that company month to month is the third setup for fail.
Vote with your money, and enjoy the device you want instead = win ?
Seems like the fowl taste WM and the Kin left in VWs mouth hasn't left pitty.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
...then Verizon should've been smart and got the HD2 instead of the Kin !
Ok ohgood, let me clarify a few things:
1. I was looking at charging cables. Its not like I ran in, brow sweaty demanding a cable and willing to pay any price.
2.funny how a device that's Been out since early summer is considered "discontinued". Only reason it is could be because VZW deemed it so. Way to give it a chance.
3.maybe you should read why I'm sticking with VZW (great cell service and grandfathered into unlimited data). I'm sure I mentioned it above. Let me check...yep. I did.
So it's hard to vote with ones wallet when my other choice is a cell carrier that drops calls or gets no service in my area all together. Heaven forbid I would like to get a phone that isn't based on specs from a year ago. So, my point still stands. Google might as well buy VZW so they can just outright say "all android, all the time"

Oh and to add a point, I wasn't seeking an upgrade. I was just browsing, curious about data cables or whathaveyou, and when making small talk, he saw the phone and started off on "the facts" about why WP7 is awful. So he wasn't trying to find my needs. And I get they follow the money, but as I previously stated, of course your gonna make more money on an OS that has a carrier branded tv and radio spot, not to mention the wall sized posters of android phones in store. Yet every vzw store I've been to had the trophy for 2 weeks in a corner of the store where no one would see it. /end rebuttal

Yes, I read that about lack of quality cellular service, its familiar to me. He's just using sales tactics that usually work for him, or possibly pointing out reasons other customers have cited for moving to iphone4. Prolly gets him a contract renewal or sale 9/10.
Thing is, no matter how uninterested you are in their hardware choices, you're supporting them month to month.

You're a good sales rep. Honestly. My last experience with a rep at a VW store went more or less as follows. I walk into the store just to look around because I had time to kill. The rep walks up and asks me what phone I have. I tell him a Focus and that I am on AT&T and am not interested in buying anything, I was just browsing. He proceeds to tell me that my phone's OS isn't any good, and that AT&T sucks (I can't really argue very much with that, though) -- I should switch to VW and get a Droid because they are the best phones available on the market. I asked him if he had ever used a WP7 -- he hadn't, of course. That conversation ended right there and I asked him to show me a Moto Xoom, which is another story.
I say reluctantly, because I want WP to be awesome. I want to stay with it, but I just can't do this 'basic' thing anymore. The colours are so dreadfully boring, there's no WP8 support for my device, Zune software sucks ass. I miss being able to just drag and drop into my music folder. Why complicate it needlessly with restrictive software? How many "new" colours will there be? 4? Android used to be laggy, but it's not anymore. Why is there no speed dial? (Yes there's an app for that, but I live in a border city, the only dialer app that displays my network is the native one, and I need to see it). There's no DLNA app (The LG one? Sorry, that's not a working app, that's just some user interface that pretends to be a DLNA app), and the battery. My freakin gosh the battery. I'd get better battery life out of a lemon and copper wire. 99% gives me 12 hours, that's if I close all apps and leave it alone for the day. I own three chargers (work, car, home), and mine is only a 3.5" screen! What if I had went with the HD7??
These alleged WP8 handsets that are coming out, will they be on par with even 2010 tech? Probably not. I'm so underwhelmed by just everything. My bro-in-law has the Note, and it's insane. Super AMOLED HD screen, xvid/h-264 support, HD out, etc. And it's already outdated almost. The Note 2 will be announced tomorrow, and then hopefully soon available here in Canada.
These are old talking points, I know. I've been reading/lurking this board since before WP came out. It's been hashed out time and again. And it doesn't even matter. What matters is what will please you/me the most. What do you care which platform I go with? I'm not bashing anything, just verbalizing my internal dialogue trying to decide. I was a pioneer with this platform, it pains me, I wanted it to be awesome, but it's just not fully functional. "But wait for the next update" worked a year ago, not this time. WP8 will be undercooked and a day late.
The desktop Windows 8 looks like a disaster of Titanic/watergate proportions. I don't want my device to in any way require that... thing of an OS. They missed the point. They may have started with simplicity in mind, but they're far from it now.
I'm due now for an upgrade, but it's not required, so I'm probably waiting until after Christmas to give time for all the iPhone5/Note2/WP8's of the world to be fully released and reviewed.
Anyone else feeling like this?
to my understanding, there's no/not too much heat on new android devices because almost every month(if not every week) there're some new android devices released to the market. You will always find better device if you hold just a little bit, just a little. but for the iPhone or the coming WP8, it'll be quite a long time before you will see a real update, the next release cycle, one year or something. So, before you see those, why jump now?

Yeah that's been the ongoing joke about the iPhone forever. And Android is definitely doing that lately.
There's certain features I really need to have in my next device. The Note has all of them. If the Note 2 dials some back, then I'll just go with the Note 1 and save some cash. If you can wait a couple months and get a little bit bigger screen, why not right?
Wait until Jan/Feb. Im expecting Microsoft to really step up with WP8 or Im gone also. I really dont like Android, but I might be out of options.

I have a A500 running 4.0.3 I think, it works fine, but I ran into a lot crashes and problems too. I think I'm very open on which OS to use, the cheapest I think I got my Windows Phone Arrive for free, absolutely free, not even activation fee, so that's why I'm with WP7. But in fact, if I jump on the new release iPhone 5, but sell it, profits.
Another Option
This is not a flame but a genuine question. Why not wait and see what RIM come up with? I got my HTC Titan because I like the look and style of win 7 and realy do not like Iphone or Andriod and yes i have had an Andriod and my girlfriend has my Iphone 4. I too feel there is just too much missing from win7 and am due an upgrade about November so if RIM can manage to sort out there act i might give it a try.Remember how things were for apple a few years ago when they were talking about just selling the company
its just an idea
Mark
^ waiting on RIM, it'll be sometime next year before an actual device is released.
Side note:
I just sold a GS3. Damn beastly phone, the best I ever had. I didn't even mind Touch wiz. I had it for one full day before selling it, that home button just ruined the experience for me though.

What vetvito said. Blackberry won't have BB10 out until like Q2 2013. As well as that, I'm just not interested in the last hurrah of a sinking company. It will probably be pretty limited. I'm just getting done with a 'new' platform, I'd like to be with something that's worked in.
Yes exactly my thoughts also on RIM. I dont want to switch to an OS that most likely will not be around anymore in few years. Before Nokia announced MS partnership I was expecting Meego to be the thing for me. I really hope hope WP8 is meeting my expectations and I wouldnt have to move to Android.
My suggestion would also be to simply wait what Microsoft's partners and Apple are bringing to the table next month. If you wait until december you should have all the options aside from RIM for whom I personally would not wait.
The Note is a nice phone in theory but the only one I know who owns one is telling me permanently about the newest strangeness it decides on doing (guess it's simply his device that's acting up - at least I hope so).
On the hardware front I'm not that concerned over WP8. The release handsets were announced to all feature Qualcomms Snapdragon S4 Plus chipsets which, even though being dual core instead of quad, offer better performance than the Tegra 3 and Samsungs own Quadcore-Chips due to the Krait-Architecture by Qualcomm. It's the same chip the LTE-Versions of the HTC One X and Galaxy S3 currently use. HD displays are also a go with WP8.
The biggest question will be WP8 features and it seems we will know whats coming there in one week.
I do see the point in waiting, but I just got myself a Focus S and its the dogs bollocks
I think what most users need to do is actually sit down and find out what they want from their phone.
apart from being able to install customs ROMs this phone does everything I want it to and it looks amazing so for me its ideal, waiting for a WP8 device may seem prudent just now but again, what do you actually want it to do, WP8 will bring new features but do you really NEED them or is it a case of "yeah that would be cool to have" if its the latter than you are buying it for the wrong reason.
theres too much focus on tech and not enough on actual usability. I can promise you that no android or Iphone will be better for my needs at the moment, not because I know every single device out there but because I know what I need my phone for, and the Focus S ticks all the boxes
So that's my advice, sit down, and write down what your phone MUST do, not what youd like it to do but MUST do, once you find a phone that does all of those things weigh up costs etc yes WP8 will be out soon, but do you NEED it, the answer may be no, but the flip side is that WP7 devices will drop in price so perhaps that's your best option.....anyhow, just food for thought
At the end of the day, it is just a phone. Doesn't matter what OS you buy into but this time around, don't buy a phone which "looks" good or "feels" good.
I would suggest trying out the phone and functions to your heart's content before parting with your money. Like everyone else, I am playing a waiting game before I invest my cash on any OS. This Christmas Santa will be pretty confused too!

MY WORDS! WP8 has some new features, but 80% of the world does not use NFC. look at Europe or Asia, have somebody seen some NFC around? the same thing, even worse is with east Europe. ok the better screen and the developer could make apps for WP8 in c++ but that not that big deal for the mayor of us. the problem is Other operating systems like Android made the WP7 users to WISH better specs. that's the problem, like an virus thats now in the heads of a few WP7 users. my WP7 does everything what i need to have from a phone right now, and for the next one, two years! like you stated people think of WP8 "yeah that and that feature would be cool to have" but i will never use it. i say lets wait until 7.8 and the new start screen, it looks and feels like the WP8. ok we dont get wallet and such thing, but wallet i dont need, i have a real wallet made out from leather the only thing whats not so good for wp7 is that voip agent can not run in background like the GSM service. so that would be an WP8 feature why i would switch, but not right now, maybe next year when the devices would be around 300-400€ in Germany.

I disagree on some of these points. Higher screen resolutions and native code are very important features. Native code enables easier porting of apps from iOS and Android (not to mention more similarity between WP8 and Windows RT) and should make these apps faster / more responsive. Having a choice of a retina display would also be nice
It would also be nice to have some bug fixes, which is more likely to happen on WP8. Tango seemed to break podcast management for some of us, in addition to a few other niggles (e.g. why can't I edit the original email after pressing reply / forward?, volume normalisation issues etc). The overall experience is good - however, there seem to be several rough edges in WP7.

Hmm good thoughts, but I disagree.
With things as luxurious as cell phones, the wants are what's most important. Cause if you go by "needs", then I'll be getting a simple feature phone, or a low end Android. Because I don't care who you are, no one needs resolution even as high as 800x480. What I "need" are email and text capabilities. I think the RAZR circa 2004 had that.
What I want is not what WP can provide right now. I know HD screens are approved, but welcome to 2011, as we head into 2013. They'll always be a step behind. Will WP8 have HDMI out? x264 support? Working DLNA? wifi hotspot? Doing away with software and just allowing drag and drop? Motion (press screen and move your hand around)?
I've been to the threads and looked at the features we've seen so far and it's just what should have been included in October 2010. The saying "wait for the next update", has been given as an excuse for every single update.
Just waiting now for news of the Note 2. Berlin is like 5 hours ahead of EST isn't it? I would've thought it'd be revealed by now.

Seriously, it would be nice to be with a solid performer.
Meego looked cool, and Bada looked promising as well. C'est la vie I guess.
Android really has come a long way
Personally I didn't really like stock Android without sense till ics. It changed everything. Battery is meh compared to I phone, but with a custom kernel I can get ~12 hours with 1-2 hours screen on if I stick with lte. With jb its really smooth too I'd recommend a Nexus if you want os support. I have an HTC Rezound and htc is really poor with updates. If you are willing to root a toro/maguro will be supported for years. If not, you should at least get a year more of updates since the phone came out last November.

Ah but usability is the main point here, HDMI, x264, DLNA, NFC are all features that are completely meaningless for many of us, you are absolutely right that a feature phone from 2004 would have done all that I need, but my phone does it better, quicker and a lot more efficiently! but that is my point if you NEED HDMI then that becomes a tick box that must be met, if it is a "oh that's a cool feature" then it shouldn't be a main tick box otherwise you'll be a mug for marketing and end up spending more on stuff you don't NEED.
All those folk out there with quad core phones are a prime example, slapping a quad core in my phone will make absolutely no difference at all in the slightest and I question anyone that doesn't play games or encode video on there phone to tell me that it does make a difference, its a great marketing tool though, its QUAD core guys, its X4 better than a single core, you MUST have this, and people lap it up, hook line and sinker

HTC Phone sales: 7,3 m
HTC Pkone sales drop: -42,5%
This is only in the Q3 2012 !
What is happening?
seriously a new post for this? its been discussed in many threads
everyone hates HTC for the lack of SD expansion despite the big storage, the battery issues despite rushing for the slim SGS2 last year which seems to have confused HTC about which is more imporant, they also hate it for not providing OTA faster than google
and the defects on the One X early launch and the US import block from apple on the One series
finally HTC can't afford the mass advertising of samsung
so yea, we all wanted HTC down and it is going down

You wonder about it? I don't. HTC does the same mistakes over and over again, losing customers, maintaining their bad image.
its ok they are going back to their windows root as you can see by their 8x
Also S-On. That alone has caused many to not buy HTC devices anymore. I won't be buying their devices that are S-On ever again. (Not that you care what I think, just if enough people think like I do....their sales will drop even more)...

I have 3 android devices now, and I have had over 10. Now I can say, that flashing on HTC is pretty easy. And I really mean easy. I mean, go and flash Acer iconia tab a500. If you'll back in 3 hours, I'll give you a cookie.
If you really bothered, that you need to connect phone to PC every time you flash it, go and buy nexus. It will make much more sense.
HTC is the best manufacturer in my. Sammy has access to the crank accessories like displays, memory, CPUs, but HTC still can fight Sammy. All other manufacturers are half dead now (Sony, Nokia, Motorola, LG).
There some massive problems in the management, some troubles with quality control.
And you believe me, if HTC would grain access to s-off, it will make 4,3% of users happy. And if they'll push jb 4.2 ota a week before Sammy, it will make 2% more customers happy.
Again, HTC's problem is getting "adult" phone manufacturer, and not the geek-smartphone designer it was 5 years ago. And it can be, that one of the reasons of it, are the people like you, guys, who are most visible in Internet, who want f-cking mega-wunder-device with fastest updates.

oh my god this guy is spot on. exactly what i wanted to say for a long time, to be honest i think they died mostly because of marketing, i dont see much of HTC's marketing compare to Samsung, everyone agree the HOX is an awesome phone but not so many people know about it, combined with the money lost from buying Beats. I'm kind of tired of people *****ing about sense, 32gb is not much, no sd card, removable battery, seriously MOST normal user (not the geek like us here on XDA) dont care about those things, oh yeah and one more thing, i love sense. LOL
Possibly also gonna be one of my last phone by HTC - for now... My phone is getting repaired for 250 euros and then i'm going to sell it for 250 euros (basically giving it away without profit). I already have a buyer and i will get the nexus 4 from google for only 300 euros. (i'm only doing this because it costs me 50$ more to get a nexus 4, since i have to get it repaired either way, eh?). If the nexus4 didn't have such a great money/specification ratio i would have probably stayed one x.
pros: I love htc's design, i love sense, it does feel different.
cons:
Their UI is good, but it comes with consequences, sadly due to my screen breaking i don't think i'll be experiencing sense with jelly bean. As good as 2.17 has gotten, IMO it's not there yet in terms of performance. I can't describe how much the app drawar annoys the living crap out of me. (I think JB fixes it though)
Display is wonderful, but why in their right mind would they put a 1800 mAh battery in a quadcore phone with a 40nm processor? I monitor my battery whenever i use it as if there's no tomorrow. You end up reaching a point where you think, okay can't touch this or that. Might get a sporadic % drop that will leave me with nearly no juice at all.
Even before rooting my phone, it would drop by 5 sometimes even more % at a time. This fault seems to not only be in the one x, but it also seems to show same crappy stats on the HTC Cha Cha(given to me by my provider) which i'm using now till my one x comes back.
IMO they seem to be doing a lot of things right and well, but if you are doing more wrong than right then that's where a company has two think twice about what they are doing.
That's not to say that other companies do not have their problems. Samsung has its faults too. But i feel as though with that company the wrongs don't outweigh the rights. I feel as though they(HTC) still haven't learned about simple things. I remember reading their blog about how important a thin phone is. It is important, but those 0.2~3 mm for the sake of a little bit more battery would satisfy users much more than having a device with 0.2~0.3mm less thickness and therefor less battery.
There's a reason they are not earning money and they should look into it asap.
edit: this seems like a rant. No! I honestly have not seen a nicer screen than the one on my ONE X. But despite the gorgeous screen i can't see it justifying those few faults by htc. (One thing i must admit - once i went SLCD2 i can't convince myself to go back to amoled that's one of the only main reasons i've also considered for going with the nexus4 is also because of the IPS screen which is said to be good. If it were amoled i honestly would have canceled this decision and stayed with the one x this round)
This is my first HTC device, and this is the opinion of a first time HTC user. Me and a friend had WiFi issues and screen gap etc. etc.
This doesn't leave us with a good taste in our mouth. I can really imagine long term users wanting to stay with HTC and that's understandable. This small mistake at the beginning though, has left people still worried about buying an htc one x to date. Still posts pop up about concerns. The first impression is the most important - especially to users wanting to convert to a new company - and as a company that was already in a bit of a trouble they really messed it up this time around. Lets hope htc does it right with tegra 4 a15s. Maybe faith can be restored. Hope it gets back on track because a world with samsung and apple only would suck major balls.

Which causes, rumours.. self advertisement.. and I think the resources spent on granting the happiness of these communities will do no harm, in finance or whatsoever.

HTC used to be the top...
My kaiser, my N1,, and now my Senny, are all real good phones.
The sensation form factor with the curve edge screen and removable battery/entire case should have been the standard going forward.
Unfortunately, they are not pushing out anything ground breaking anymore, just following the curve, not creating it, not to mention, their ads really suck compared to the Samsung ones.

It is only half of the truth. Yeah, the people like us are irl usually pioneers of technologies, but the half of us are nerds. I`m sorry, but it so. And those who are posting all 2 minutes in jb thread are the worst of them.
As for me, i allways recommend those phones, which pass to the person, whom I recommend it. And, if you believe or not, I do even recommend iPhone some times.
HTC is the manufacturer, who came from geek area and they are still trying not to loose those auditory. If they do it good is another question...
@mrbkkt1
Man, don`t You know, marketing and management are not only the ads?
Look, the worst move in my eyes was bringing hox so early to the end user. They could take one month extra and release it with a firmware equal to 2.17. In his first month, HOX was one of the worst phones out there: Screen Flickering, VERY bad battery times, many issues in perfomance...In most benchmarks it is still listed with old software, with newer builds it blows SGS3 and all other phones out there.
Another failure was to go after the slimness. I think, it was a wish of top managers, making the hox so slim and light. I would really LOVE my HOX, if it was 3mm thicker with 2300 battery. I would even pay extra, and the most non-emotional buyers would do it to, i think.
Sense is another point, where htc is in their own sh-t. The widgets are very nice, i even prefer the lock screen, but the notification and app drawers are far behind of ICS. They could save money or let programmers work on the new updates, instead of working on porting this crap. Although there are some really great features like get started...
So, like You can see, the problems are much deeper, than ads...
And You can`t say new HTCs are worse than the old ones. HTC Neo was a big fail in my eyes, Universal or Touch Cruise. They where all not good. But at the same time there was Blueangel, a masterpiece, or htc hd2...

No sorrys, I called all of us nerds couple of times in the JB thread =)
I did recommend an iPhone to my own sister, to her husband, to a random guy who just asked stuff about my HD2 in an elevator of a mall.. etc Of course what I meant was not misleading ppl, but I think you did get the idea of what I meant by saying the self advertisement.
exactly what I was trying to say that they are coming from geek area, and they should not lose this while trying to sail into oceans.
Ok staying in the geek area is not that profitable at all for a large company, but forgetting it also is not a good way too.

You know, in marketing theory, it`s even needed to have fanbase of market`s pioneers, but mobile area is to specific. You see it with apple. They going straight to the consumers, passing all the pioneers

I'm assuming hox is HTC one x ?
Ads are very influential in certain ways for the mainstream. I remember seeing the ad for the sensation, with the little girl playing the piano, wondering what the point was. Samsung is doing very well at being the anti-Apple.
Another problem is that Samsung and lg make other products besides phones, which can influence their buying decisions, like TVs and washers. What else does HTC make?
I love HTC, but honestly, in a month or so, I'm picking up either an N4, or a GN2.

Its just the marketing, you all hate iPhone but that makes the most money does it run android no, but people still buy it you lot are not the average tech consumers. HTC is doing bad because of marketing due to the lack of spending money. They spent their money on the wrong things. You cannot compare apple and samsung to HTC, a smartphone manufacturer you idiots. Someone said they are not doing well because of the lack of sd card and s-off you must be seriously stupid. After reading all of these comments I can tell you all one thing business lessons didn't do you a favour did it. I'am a business student I have experience believe me it's just marketing and brand image.

Maybe we are a small percentage of users...but as someone else mentioned, we do influence family and friends buying habits. Not only that but I've seen quite a few devs drop HTC devices for Samsung BECAUSE of the locked bootloaders.
There are 4 million xda users. If a small percentage of us influence others it does add up. All of these decisions add up.
