About a month ago my area upgraded from EDGE to HSPA+. I finally decided to play with the speedtest.net app yesterday and I was only managing download speeds of maybe 1 or 2Mb, on a good test. This is enough for casual use, I suppose, but most people (on this board at least) seem to be getting much better speeds than that. A nearby area where the State University resides also produces similar speeds on my GNex and my previous phone (AT&T Galaxy S2).
Is this normal or do I need to change something on my phone?

1-3mbps is pretty normal for me indoors with 2-3 bars of signal, with 4-5 or so outdoors with better signal. I can only pull down those crazy numbers of 10+ with HSPA+ late at night when the towers aren't as busy. I'm in a small town, but we've had HSPA+ for a good year or more now (heck, I was on Verizon when it was switched on, so I don't know exactly how long...). Maybe your network is still getting upgraded / installed and the process isn't done yet?
I'm on the T-mobile $30 plan, by the way. I've heard AT&T's HSPA+ can be significantly slower in some places, so that may be part of it?
if they just rolled out the towers a month ago and upgraded to HSPA+, I'm not at all surprised by those speeds.
Att's hspa is notoriously slow compared to Tmo. I see between 6 and 18 mbps on my Tmo phones and my Att phones max out at around 6, averaging around 3.
For an area that just now got hspa turned on when the rest of the country is getting LTE, those speeds you are describing seem perfectly normal.

I'm on T-Mobile and 1-2Mb is normal for me with 5 bars. If I'm extremely lucky I sometimes see 3Mb.
T-Mobile's "4G" in Phoenix is exactly the same speed as my 3G Vibrant.

True, location also plays a big role.

I would be happy to get 6Mb down with AT&T in Austin. Max is about 3.1Mbps which I think is crap since we know it is capable of more. Interestingly, AT&T LTE in the same areas rock!

Well that's also because T-Mobile has HSPA+ 42mbps deployed, and devices that can make use of it. Most AT&T devices are at best 21mbps capable, and not all of their towers are.
Depends on signal strength. On VZW LTE I can pull 20+ mbps in Seattle, but only 2-5 mbps in outlying areas.

"4g" in quotes, and OP specifically is talking about AT&T.
I'll have to run speedtest some more when I'm out of town and see what kind of numbers I can get. I would be interested to see what speeds a 3G phone gets in the same region as my "4G" Gnex (HSPA+ via AT&T, not LTE via Verizon).
Just got to know if i am the only experience this, but lately in reframed areas of t-mobile's 1900mhz band I been getting GPRS instead of the normal edge "when not in 4g of course" Normally when around my community i get edge now i just get GPRS From what I know the t-mobile version on the s3 1900 band is for edge right ?
What kinda of speeds are you getting

Just A quick question about my Data for HSDPA for i9250.
According to GSMARENA
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_nexus_i9250-4219.php
The internet: Speed HSDPA, 21 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps
However, I'm only getting HSDPA 7.2Mbits (HSDPA:8)
Anyone know why?
Edit: When I'm not doing anything, I'm just on the HSDPA 7.2(HSDPA:8), however, when I'm running a speedtest, it runs on HSPDA+(HSPA+15). Anyone know why it bounces up when I do something intensive?
My guess would be to use less battery and prevent tower congestion. I'm on AT&T and my phone jump from HSPA+ to 3G when I'm not using data either.

And how is the service? Data speed specifically...
Galaxy S III I747
I'm using an unlocked i747 on T-Mobile in Miami. While on touchwiz (when I unlocked) I would get 4G(hspa+) and the speeds are better than at&t 4G (their LTE). Now I'm back to cm10.1 and when on 3G I'm still faster than at&t. I touchwiz shows 4G when really on 3G (HSpa). However, my phone constantly goes to G (GPRS) and becomes unusable.
But that's Miami. T-Mobile is in the process of updating their 3G to support at&t bands, specifically the iPhone for people with unlocked ones.

lucky..
i hardly get 3G in my area.. let alone by 4G D:
in Nor Cal here btw
Well I just paid 3 etfs and am on T-Mobile now....proof in pictures! I was getting less than 300kb d/l on at&t "Lte" and non existent u/l. I also pay $55 less and get unlimited texts on all lines (only had it on one before) and true unlimited data WITH tethering (thx to xda!).

Yesterday was the office....this is home. I couldn't even browse a simple website on "Lte" before...

how has the service been now? usable or not? Looking to get a phone using the 1900 band but not sure how stable it is.
Using the Galaxy Note II in Manhattan, we remained firmly rooted to Sprint's 3G network, with predictably slow results. On Speedtest.net, the Note II achieved an average download speed of only 0.40 MBps and an equally sluggish upload speed of 0.35 MBps. On AT&T's 4G LTE network, by contrast, we noted average download and upload speeds of 22.5 and 12.9 MBps, respectively. Not surprisingly, websites loaded agonizingly slowly over 3G. The mobile version of CNN.com, for instance, loaded in 20 seconds (compared to 2.1 seconds on AT&T's network), while the mobile version of NYTimes.com loaded in 21 seconds (versus 2.7 seconds on AT&T). What are the best options to get switched to a faster data speed?
My speeds were fast for over a year like verizon but sprint did something to the towers by my house and it's horrible 3g at best speeds . It says 4glte but there's no way close to that there's no fix all this change prl or modem stuff to change anything I tried all of them with same results. The apps that say they will boost your signal are full of **** until sprint fix towers we are stuck with b.s service hope this save you time trying to fix something that can't be fixed by us.
