Anyone using an unlocked at&t phone on T-Mobile in los Angeles? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

And how is the service? Data speed specifically...
Galaxy S III I747

I'm using an unlocked i747 on T-Mobile in Miami. While on touchwiz (when I unlocked) I would get 4G(hspa+) and the speeds are better than at&t 4G (their LTE). Now I'm back to cm10.1 and when on 3G I'm still faster than at&t. I touchwiz shows 4G when really on 3G (HSpa). However, my phone constantly goes to G (GPRS) and becomes unusable.
But that's Miami. T-Mobile is in the process of updating their 3G to support at&t bands, specifically the iPhone for people with unlocked ones.

lucky..
i hardly get 3G in my area.. let alone by 4G D:
in Nor Cal here btw

Well I just paid 3 etfs and am on T-Mobile now....proof in pictures! I was getting less than 300kb d/l on at&t "Lte" and non existent u/l. I also pay $55 less and get unlimited texts on all lines (only had it on one before) and true unlimited data WITH tethering (thx to xda!).
Galaxy S III I747

Yesterday was the office....this is home. I couldn't even browse a simple website on "Lte" before...
Galaxy S III I747

Home and office both located in Torrance...this is west Hollywood (running an errand)

how has the service been now? usable or not? Looking to get a phone using the 1900 band but not sure how stable it is.

[Q] at&t 4g on unlocked tmobile galaxy s3??

I have a unlocked t mobile galaxy s3 I'm using on at&t network and I only get 3g but my download speeds are 4 to 5 mb. Which is pretty decent but I was wondering if there was a way to get AT&T 4g? Maybe it's my apn setting issue? Any tips.....
What data plan are you on (medianet/dumb phone, fauxG, LTE)? I've rarely had issues with my unlocked phones having the wrong APN on AT&T, but here are the APNs: medianet is wap.cingular, 4G/HSPA+ is phone, and 4G LTE is pta.
That's about what I get on medianet. I've got as high as 8Mbps on pta but it varies and it's never been consistent for me. 3-5Mbps is normal for my HSPA+ in my area (Olympia, WA). I get about the same speeds in southern CA and tended to get better speeds by 1-2Mbps in Austin, TX.
If you're asking if it's possible to get LTE on the T999, I have no idea. ;P The MSM8960 (S4 SoC in both phones) does support it natively but I don't know if it's possible to enable the LTE modem in software. You could try flashing an AT&T modem but I doubt it's that simple.
Ok maybe I'm wrong but isn't the t-mobile galaxy s3 the only one that didn't come lte equipped because t-mobile uses hspa+?

Hey I have a question regarding this topic and the quote above. You listed the Apn's with its respective data plan:
1. wap.cingular = non-smartphone (i'll refrain myself from calling it a dumb phone plan lol).
2. Phone = 4G/H+
3. LTE = PTA
So I've just switched over from IPhone 4s > HTC One X > to now the Samsung Galaxy S3 (International unlocked version).
When I switched sims from iphone to one x, my data wouldnt work so they told me to get an LTE sim and give them the imei # of the ONE x. So i did that and everything was fine. They updated my account and i was receiving LTE on the phone with no issues.
NOW, with my galaxy, i just stuck the LTE sim in the phone and the phone defaulted to the cingular 410 apn. This is same as wap.cingular.
So here are my questions:
1. Would it be beneficial (from a performance/data speed standpoint) for me to call AT&T and tell them I'm back to a NON-LTE phone and have them change my account to a non-LTE account? And go through the process of changing my imei # in their system again also?
2. Since I'm actually on a smartphone unlimited (i did not take advantage of the $10/mo medianet) should I change my APN settings to "PHONE" and not use what the S3 defaulted me to?
3. Whats the actual difference in using wap vs phone APN's... I know the settings themselves are different, but anybody know the technical differences?
Thanks so much in advance!
T-mobile galaxy S3 on ATT 4G network
Hello can anyone post pics of the Galaxy S3 (T999) the t mobile version on ATT 3g or 4g networks. I am thinking about buying it but wanna be sure that it works before i spend the big bucks
This guy confirmed it works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27984139&postcount=28
Anyone else have such luck?
I'm having this exact problem. I have an unlocked T Mobile S3 that I want to use on the AT&T network. Phone, text and VM work fine although AT&T hasn't figured out how to give me data service in any form. They're all stumped by this.
What I really need help with is coaching AT&T through the process.

Does T-mobile GS3 work on ATT HSPA+?

Hi, im new, 2nd post (1st thread)
So heres some background info, I have AT&T but i work for t-mobile. Had my AT&T GS2 phone stolen by a t-mobile customer and the company I work for are great people and decided to replace my GS2 with a t-mobile gs3 for $100. They even offered me a dealer line to go with it (I get unlimited everything [NO THROTTLING] for $22 a month)
So heres my question. I know for sure that it wouldnt connect to AT&T LTE but for whatever reason if I decide to unlock and use it on my AT&T plan, does it have the proper bands required to connect to AT&T's HSPA+ network or would I be running edge?
I know all iphone's used on T-Mobile only run EDGE. (Coming later this fall they will be able to connect to t-mobile's 4g HSPA+ network)
Anybody have a clue?
I'm pretty sure it would work on atnt 3g speeds
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
It will work. The T999 has support for 1900 Mhz hspa+, which is the AT&T band.
Thanks. Much appreciated.
Confirmed working. I unlocked my T999. I have 2 sim cards, StraightTalk and Tmobile monthly 4G. I travel a lot, so depending on which carrier gives me the best signal that's what I would use. Usually, StraightTalk would give me the better signals...although Tmobile still gives me faster data speeds. just thought id share .02.

Hi, I'm waking up this thread as I have the T999 phone and recently switched to Straight Talk SIM (AT&T).
I only get EDGE on the phone using my Straight Talk SIM.
Is there anything I need to do with the phone? It runs the latest stock, not rooted or modified as such. It is carrier unlocked.
I unlocked my t999 and using it on my contract att plan, getting hspa+ atm, just check the bands that it supports, which are 850mhz 1900mhz for att's 3.5g(not 4g) LTE is 4G.

What apn settings do you use? I plugged my ATT sim into an unlocked SGH-T999 today with the ST APN settings and only get 3G. Speed isn't bad - 1164k down/1041 up, but I would like to tap into the HSPA+ if possible.

Using T999 on AT&T?

(Did a quick forum search on this and didn't see anything that answered my question, so if this is around somewhere, I apologize.)
Okay, I'm currently with Verizon Wireless, and generally happy with my service, but what I am unhappy with is my bill (I pay $220+ a month for 4 lines, only 2 of which are Smart Phones). I'm thinking of switching to T-Mobile's prepaid service when my contract is up, and my and my wife both like the Galaxy S3, but I'm leery about T-Mobile's service in my area (I live in a rather Rural area). Ideally, I'd buy an unlocked version of the phone to use with prepaid plans (so if I'm dissatisfied with one prepaid service, I just switch out SIM cards and port my number), BUT unfortunately, the unlocked versions of the S3 that I've found don't work with the T-Mobile HSPA+ band (1700 MHz). However, what I have found is that when comparing the T999 with the I747 (T-Mobile and AT&T versions, respectively), I've found that (LTE aside) the frequencies they operate on are exactly the same, with the difference being only that T-Mobile's can use the 1700 MHz frequency.
SO, my question is: If I went ahead and sprung for a couple of T999's and found that T-Mobile didn't work for me, could I just unlock the phone for use with AT&T and pop in an AT&T SIM, and enjoy AT&T's HSPA+ goodness? Or is there something I'm missing? I know that the other way around won't work (only in very, VERY isolated spots will T-Mobile customers with unlocked iPhones and Droids that operate on 1900 MHz frequencies actually get more than EDGE speeds with their devices), but this seems like the best option (barring buying a GSM Galaxy Nexus from the Google PLAY store, which I'm not sure will be available when my contract is up - I hear that there's a new Galaxy Device being cooked up, and I'm not holding my breath for Google to sell it alongside an older Nexus device).
Opinions?
FYI, I'm not worried about LTE right now. As I said, I live in a rural area that's lucky to have 3G. LTE might not EVER make it to my area (AT&T just added 3G to my area in the last year), so HSPA+ (whether 21 Mbps or T-Mobile's 42 Mbps) is plenty fast for me (my Verizon Wireless Xperia PLAY currently pulls down 1.5 Mbps on a good day).

Wow. It's refreshing to see someone do research before asking a question.
Yes, that would probably be your best bet. You can use the T-999 on AT&T HSPA+ just fine. You can even use it on Medianet's $10 unlimited data I believe since it isn't an AT&T phone. I feel like you will likely end up doing this as T-Mobile prepaid has a smaller coverage footprint than postpaid (or so they claim).
So yes, if you don't care about LTE, this would work just fine for you.
At&t user here. Yeah hspa+ works fine on it. If losing lte isn't an issue for you then go for it.

I was on the same boat as the OP. I bought an unlocked T999 and I am currently using on ATT's network, but through Straight Talk. I still get HSPA speeds w/o the 5GB cap.
Another AT&T user here also using Medianet plan.. Works perfect on hspa+

In a similar situation!
I have the T999 with T-mobile and am moving to Kauai, am there now and the service is worthless. I looked at AT&T's prices for shi*ts and giggles and ugh, no. I just ordered a straight talk AT&T compatible sim from walmart, will need to cut it because everywhere is out of micro sims, and would like to know how successful the T999 is on the AT&T compatible network of straight talk. I seriously feel lost without data to my phone, it hurts.
I have been researching and researching the band frequencies and everything points to that it should work. I just got this phone after my rooted/unlocked SGS4g went into a toilet and then sold on ebay.
lol
BTW long time viewer of XDA, has been successful in unlocking/rooting/flashing the SGS4g and the T999, with a mac I might add which always makes things complicated.
Thanks again

T-Mobile Note II or AT&T Note II?

So is the T-Mobile Note II better than the AT&T one? I know it has a better 3G radio with quad band 3G that does 42mbps rather than the AT&T one that only does 21mbps and is only tri-band. How feasible do you guys think it would be to buy a launch day Note II on contract, immediately sell it on eBay and buy a T-Mobile Note II for the same price?
Plausible if you expect to get $650+tax for the AT&T note.
Is T-Mobile's coverage that bad in your area? If T-Mobile has good coverage in your area then why not just go for T-Mobile? It would make sense to go for Verizon LTE services for the large coverage and high speeds even with the Verizon premium price. But for me it makes no sense in going to AT&T if you have good coverage with T-Mobile. Both the price and speed differences between T-Mobile vs AT&T itself would turn me to T-Mobile and away from AT&T. The only thing that AT&T beats T-mobile is having a larger coverage area. But otherwise there is no reason to go for AT&T.
I just think you are trying to go the long way around. Which is not making sense.

I'm on contract with AT&T for another year so I'd have pay cancellation fees and what not.
And the T-Mobile service isn't very good in my area at all.. atleast it wasn't a year and a half ago.
Not to hog the thread, but, would a T-mobile Note 2 (once unlocked obviously), work on atleast HSPA speeds on AT&T - im not really too bothered about LTE, though obviously don't want the tmobile phone restricted to EDGE on at&t like iphones 4s are on tmobile _ this situation is the reverse of that scenario.
?
I have an option to buy a T-Mobile one for relatively cheap off a colleague, but want to use it on AT&T as thats the contract I have and T-mob don't have great reception in my house!!.
I know the 4G LTE in the T-Mobile Note II is currently disabled but... once enabled would it work on AT&Ts 4G LTE?

If you don't care about LTE, then get the T-Mobile one as that has 42mbps HSPA as opposed to 21mbps of all other Note II versions and it's also pentaband too so it'll work pretty much anywhere around the world

I'm considering the Note2 on all carriers even the international model if Multi-View doesn't come soon but last weekend tested the Note2 in a T-Mobile store & was impressed by the SpeedTest of 20 ( +/- 2) Mbps down & ~ 2 Mbps up (store is in a well covered area) & Friday night I was with someone where I'd more frequently use the Note2 & tested the network down on her original Galaxy S still pulling down ~10 Mbps down (+/- 5 with avg ~ 8 Mbps down-streaming quality video was great which I can't currently do with my Sprint EVO except off their network here on Wi-Fi) & still ~ 2 Mbps up.
So far I like T-Mobile speeds & plans (reasonably priced unlimited option should I need it though I usually but not always have access to fast Wi-Fi) yet I'm concerned they don't have the same coverage as AT&T (I'll also speedtest AT&T locally this week) so was considering getting the Note2 on AT&T & if not satisfied ($300 + $325 ETF) go get service on T-Mobile with option to go back to AT&T should I move. What limitations besides the 21 Mbps HSPA+ would I have if I get the AT&T model which would also offer me LTE ~ 20 miles away?

Here's my experience with T-Mo on a car trip from the NW to Midwest. The data was non-existent except on cities & towns, I'd say over 10,000. Where a data signal was available it was typically very good. I didn't speed test my note 2, but likely =/- 10Mbps. In the NW (Seattle area) I find some rural areas with poor data signal. My daughters house is on the edge of a town with pop of about 5,000. I have to go outside to get a descent data signal while she gets good signal inside with AT&T.
Personally I'm very happy with my T-MO service. I've been with then for 10 years, but only about 2 that I've been concerned with data, whereas previously I used primarily wifi and now using predominately data.
Hope with gives you at least one useful perspective.

I will test to confirm but I think T-Mobile service will be faster on HSPA+ (LTE is 20 miles away & don't expect to get it here soon except for Verizon) & less expensive but I'm starting to suspect the potential for range anxiety (that people with electric cars often feel) when traveling out of metro areas hence consideration of AT&T model (which offers superior coverage as well as LTE in some markets now) to use on T-Mobile if possible?

I'm going to look into this further (the T-Mobile pamphlet they gave me last weekend still listed "America's Largest 4G Network) but I'm going to try to check it out again in a T-Mobile store now:

"T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 is the 4G dark horse. It's really fast, covers a lot of the country, and is inexpensive. We found it to be faster than Verizon LTE for downloads in 11 cities (T-Mobile didn't win, though, because Verizon had much faster upload speeds.) Outside cities, where T-Mobile has coverage, it blew away other 3G networks. But that's the key: T-Mobile's truly rural coverage is slimmer than AT&T's or Verizon's."

Unlocked AT&T S3 I747 for MetroPCS/TMobile

Has anyone here bought an unlocked AT&T S3 to use on the MetroPCS/Tmobile network? If so has there been any issues? shorter battery life, bad connectivity?
I am debating getting the S3 unlocked or HTC One S. I would prefer the HTC One S but it doesn't have microSD slot
I have a SGH T999 Lte at&t branded unlocked and use on TMobile with the T999L lte rom with no ill effects.

Is that the same model as my phone? So it would be advisable, after I got the S3 to flash it with a MetroPCS ROM after activation by Metro?
I thought there would be no need of a flash if I got an unlocked phone.

You will have issues with 3G HSPA+ on 1700mhz, but 2G EDGE & 4G LTE will work just fine. If you live in a large metro area with a lot of LTE coverage it will be fine. I just went through this with my wife's phone, she had to have the Red one (AT&T specific).

There is no need to flash anything, just unlock it and add/edit the APN for TMo.

Sweet thanks! Both areas that I frequent have 4G and LTE coverage. My only concern is when I'm driving long distances which I often do, being in college and losing 2G signal in the middle of no where. So far with my Metro phones, I haven't seen anywhere I had 3G coverage. its always 2G and 4G/LTE

Good, that is exactly what we are seeing as well. Mostly LTE coverage with EDGE to fallback on. Most all Metro areas and major highways/interstates will have good coverage. Funny enough we live in the middle of nowhere, but there is a major highway nearby so we get LTE coverage.
On a side note, US carriers marketed HSPA as 3G and HSPA+ as 4g, but both are technically 3G. True 4G is LTE. I am not sure if Metro ever had HSPA service, I think that they were just CDMA then later added LTE and have been migrated to TMo's GSM/HSPA network which now uses Metro's LTE as well. Only the newer GSM Based phones would connect to HSPA.
I have my s3 i747 unlocked an on metro I cannot get no data

4.3 rooted.. I got data now that I flashed a modem but its very slow datai don't know how to find the right 1..heres what the one I downloaded is called modem_CWM_I747UCUEMJB
Define Slow data please. Post Speed test results.
normally around 0.15mbs but sometimes it works great and I get around 15.00mbs
Given this is not an LTE device, that sounds about right. Weather, tower congestion do affect results.

The I747 is an LTE device, my wife's (running on TMo) works just fine on LTE, just not HSPA+ 1700MHz. I'll run speed test if people would like.
Unlocked att siii will not access metro/t-mobile data
Can someone verify for me what the correct apn settings are? Should there be a network operator? And since I think the apn is finally right, do you have any more suggestions? Also, do you know if this is CDMA or GSM?
can I ask why people want to buy an ATT phone to use on a Tmobile carrier? On the S4 and Note versions, people buy Tmobile phones and use them on ATT, myself included. This is because of the bootloader, and the Tmobile phones cover ATT LTE channels while not the opposite.
Wasn't planned
I didn't intentionally set out to buy an AT&T phone, I was just looking to upgrade and this was the best deal. Or at least it looked to be on the surface. Do I just need to forget it and try to sell it?
If you are in an area recently upgraded by T-Mobile, the I747 will work just fine. However, if you are in an are not upgraded with LTE, etc, it's waay more trouble than its worth. The above post about not getting HSPA+21/42 is worth considering too though.
T-Mobile and AT&T are both GSM networks btw.

I am actually on Metro P.S, but they are on the T-mobile network now in Atlanta, Ga where I live. We do run 4glte,but so far the fastest mine will connect to shows "E" on my phone, edge maybe? One of the many I've spoken with at metro said E is 3g. One of their repair techs said I needed a different SIM card because I had a CDMA phone but when I got to the store that had one he said it was a GSM phone. It's already about been more trouble than it is worth, but as much effort as I've put into it already, I'd like to resolve it.
