Modem search - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Does anyone know how long you should wait after flashing a new modem before think it sucks and flash a different one
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

A full day with completely great weather. Maybe two because god only know how internet traffic is. A week if you want to be all scientific and such.

If possible try it out before 7am, or after 11pm. I have had modems make me think they suck only to find out they are the best of the worst at a given time. I'm still on el29 as it is the best in my area it seems, used to think it stunk, but after a few days i realized it gave me the most consistent(still terrible, thx sprint) download speed during peak usage times. I also always look at download speeds from the market getting apps as a comparison to say speedtest.net, as most speed apps are fairly unreliable.

(Q)Slow data w/4 bars

I have 4 full bars and my 3g keeps dropping, not fully connecting, and downloads around 5kilobytes a sec. I went from cm7 back to my nand of stock sense and still have the problem. I can barely load xda.
Anyone got any ideas why?

Maybe there is some kind of outage where you live?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA Premium App
Yeah what above said. I get 2 bars avg in my house and get about 800kbps, 4 bars I get 1mbps, They may be working on the towers out there also
Any chance you might have given them reason to throttle you data connection down?
I also experience dramatic drops in data speeds at peak times and it is location specific where I live. At 2300 in my neighborhood I get great speeds, but at the same time at work (which is full of people still awake and likely using their network) I get really bogged down.
Either a possible factor?

I think the reason why people get horrible speeds at work is because there is probably too much electronic interference.
But then again, when someone says "work" I imagine someone sitting in a cubicle.

Interesting, 4 bars at my place equals 1.5 to 2.5 mpbs and 1 bar equals around 7-800 kbps.

besides the "3G hack" is there anyway to prevent from being throttled on a non rooted 2.3.3 dinc2?
I was under the impression that even with the hack you can get throttled
But I also understand you need to be using GBs/month to make that happen. Most people would have a hard time getting there.
I stream Pandora ALL the time, and I usually get between 1 and 2 GBs of useage. I'm also using my phone for most of my internet browsing.

There's a lot of things that will influence your throughput. Signal strength is only one of a few. Signal quality and available bandwidth will also influence it. A strong signal with a bit of noise will cause problems.
Try *228 option 2, then reboot, and see if it helps.

There's only two verizon towers in my city if that helps lol. I don't know much about towers but I know one of them is 4G because we have 4G here
I live in Orlando area, and I'm having issues with 3G today as well. Phone keeps trying to sync also. I think Verizon may have network issues today. I haven't installed any new apps, and I only use 1 widget that syncs, which is Twitter.

I'm in Cali and had the same problem late last night. I think they are doing something with the towers cause my signal is fine now.
I'm getting throttled and it sucks. I have been getting 1x internet everywhere I go ever since I reached 3GB in the first week.

Verizon is cracking the whip on "free" tethering. I read in an article that it can be tracked if your phone is on gingerbread. I'm not sure, maybe one of the devs could weigh in, but I read there was code written into GB to help them track it. If I can find the article, I'll link it.

Yes I have noticed this also and 50k is the magic number I am getting from adownloader as well when two weeks ago it had been a stead 10-12mb down for months. I had a feeling after seeing my GB usage over the last several months a cap would drop. It is weird though since when I test in 4G with speed net that my download is at 12mb. I'll be putting my netflix in full effect soon to test that out to see if there is a reduction in quality because I'm curious how they can ascertain the difference in my usage.

I've seen this with adownloader as well. I flashed FC15 modem and it solved this issue as well as other data related things. I'm on Calks FC24 rom.
You can't forward ports on sprint unless you run through a VPN (meaning your not connectable)...even then, it is still possible to determine your torrenting due to the fact that sprint blocks all DNS requests that aren't through them, so sprint sees the DNS request for tracker.isohunt.com or whatever crappy public tracker your using and are essentially tied to your account and therefore your name.
This is not to mention that the BitTorrent protocol itself is not very secure, and even with RC4 encryption it's still ridiculously easy to see that your torrenting and not watching Netflix via DPS (deep packet inspection), using the default port, etc...
The only way to use a DNS server that is not sprints is with openVPN (which will destroy your battery life) as they DNS hijack, or forward all port 53 traffic to their DNS servers (iptables? Ngnix?).
if your gonna go that length to torrent on-the-go you mine as well just set up a subsonic server for yourself and do the torrenting at home.
Seriously...Does nobody bother to research stuff like this before you do something that can get you in hot water in the first place?
I really hope your service gets shut off... Good luck finding another provider that wont charge you for the amount of data you are using.

I noticed this as well. A couple days ago is when i started getting 50 on GingerBread. I haven't tried again since flashing an ics rom with fc24 modem but the internet feels back up to full speed.
The problem is sprint has no way of or doesn't care to determine legal torrents from illegal torrents. They just see torrent traffic and throttle.
Back when I was on GB my speedtest still showed full speed but other things were effected too. I tried one or two direct downloads and got exactly 50 as well.
This is not a Sprint thing. I have a family member who has clearwire for their broadband at home and on the go and they mentioned to me last weekend that they cannot download torrents anymore because the speed is to low. They called and talked to clearwire about having speed issues and clearwire told him they have no idea what he is talking about.
So it looks like clear is shutting it down not Sprint. But try it on 3G and see what speed you get. If your pulling decent 3G and it is locked to 50k then I suspect that it may be both companies in tandem.
I was d/l at 1mb/s on atorrent yesterday. FC24 modem
Be careful, they WILL shut your service off without warning. I use wifi 80% of the time, but just happened to be on wimax yesterday.

It doesn't matter about the legal or illegal torrents.....it's breaking sprints tos ....the tos that everyone signed says no downloading of files...so technically when we download roms from xda we are breaking tos and subject to throttle or termination etc .

I call BS on that because it would also mean we are breaking the TOS by downloading an app from the market or any appstore.

Wifi download speed reduction on CM9

My wifi download speed seems to have reduced drastically after flashing CM9 (which I love so far). On previous roms such as clean GB and sleeper ROM my download speed at home would range between 8 and 14 Mbps. Now I'm getting speeds between 3 and 4 down. Often my upload speed is the same or higher. My wired connection on my desktop is regularly in the high 20's for reference. Anyone have any insight on why this may be? Maybe the devs of the previous roms had some tweaks? It's hardly a big problem, but it is nice to have a fast connection for large downloads.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I have similar issues. I think that it is due to the fact that we are using crespo/herring wifi drivers on CM9. I will look into the differences of the Victory and Crespo drivers and attempt to find why it is slower.

I am on AOKP 5.2 (same drivers right??), nyan colonel 4.2 with no additional tweaks, about 100 ft from my router and 15 down 3 up connection. My speeds are typically higher than this but the wife is downloading stuff on my network. Just posting as reference. I have noticed more consistent speeds since coming to ICS variations.

Does anyone else have this 4g issue?

The disparity between download and upload is driving me insane.. I've tried everything I can think of to no avail... Could this just be my local tower? It has been this way for months since I moved in.
Why would upload always be at least twice as fast as download?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Maybe a lot of people use that tower or it's quite overloaded with not enough sufficient backhaul...
I actually get them in some areas but its usually the highly congested areas.
Yeah, check the last few pages of this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771294
Well... That is unfortunate. Hopefully this fix will make its way to aosp and cm in the near future because this is abysmal

Data speeds fast on fresh rom.

When are our phones going to get the 4G lte upgrade?
Now that you're done gut laughing, how come when I flash a rom with a full wipe, my data speeds will be awesome even on 3g, but then later on that day or maybe the next day or so, the speeds just turn right back into the slow ass normal sprint crappy speeds? Anyone else notice this at all? Are there any logical reasons for this? It's so extreme I would almost call it throttling my speeds cause its so significant. It will happen at my house or at work where I know it's not just the change in location that affects the speed. Will go from restoring all my apps in next to no time, to barely downloading a <1 mb app update in less than 5 to 6 minutes.
I notice it on any rom really as long as I do a full wipe. Aosp or tw, it doesn't matter ether or.
And upon searching the web for this issue I found people asking quite frequently about lte on our phones and found it quite comical.
Thanks for any info!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Maybe it's dependant on the time that you're using said data? I imagine it'd be slower with more people on, and peak times should be at 8pm+

Anyone else notice that on large file downloads on 4g, after a few minutes you get throttled to 3g speeds? This includes YouTube and large apps on the play store. And once it's done, the speeds go back to normal.
