I live in the UK and am looking on the net for a cheap xperia play, can i buy a phone from the US e bay and be able to use it as a phone over here with my sim card?
Also not sure on Bricking a phone Gingerbreak, flashing or rooting, anyone care to explain to a noob?
The US Ebay will most likely have the R800x and R800at. The x is for use only on CDMA carriers, which I've been told don't exist in the UK. The at is AT&T's sim-locked device, which I'm not totally sure whether it can be used in the UK or not. I'm guessing not. I believe the version you're going to want to find is called the R800i. Make sure you look specifically for that, so you don't get a phone that won't work on your carrier.
You might be able to find the right one on ebay, but you do indeed need the R800i. You could try look on ebay.co.uk, or even ebay.fr (french) or ebay.de (german). Just make sure you get the R800i.

Now just to read up about root, flash, brick and gingerbreak to find out what all the fuss is about as i am still a noob.

Try somewhere like CeX. Their phones are usually pretty cheap.

I have been reading the last 3 days forums all over the internet and called a couple of unlock phone guru's but haven't found any form to unlock my wife's xperia play. she passed away a week ago. I need to contact some of her friends and let them know about this.
please if you know a way to unlock it without losing the contacts info it would mean the world to me.

Typically devices to access that information on a locked phone are very expensive. I don't think there is an easy way to get past the pass lock. If you know her gmail username and password you could input the wrong code until it gives you the option to unlock via the Google account.

When you set a lock.code you have to set a seperate question and answer such as whats your mothers maiden name/ favourite place
If she was your wife you should know this, try doing that
The funniest thing is there was a guy a while back who was asking almost the same question, but it was his son who had been given the phone and had "messed up" the code and now they couldn't get into it.
If you ARE for real, then take the phone to ur networks shop, u will have proof that she was ur wife, and they will be able to help u, I would have thought this would be the first thing u thought of, NOT making an account on XDA and asking here =/

Well my Mrs is getting her upgrade tomorrow (HTC One X), but I'm guessing its going to come locked to ORANGE UK network.. I'm in THREE UK network.. So my Sim card wont work in it... right?
I need to try & get it unlocked to all networks... or I'll just have to sell it.

They don't always come unlocked in the UK most carriers sim block it to their networks. Some don't some do.

What network is your phone locked too and who do you want to use?

A friend tested and it didn't worked...
I 2nd that I was locked to o2 and needed unlocking it took a day to get a code for my one x o2 said they would be 7 days cellunlocker really good

If we don't try to keep this forum organized then you will have hundreds of threads with people asking the same thing and no one will get help. I'm more than willing to help people but they need to take the time and effort reading through other threads first to make sure things haven't already been answered or discussed. Unless you like unorganized forums where you can't accomplish anything.

Its a fake phone man , contact the seller and demand a refund. Unlocking it and stuff is impossible as these Chinese phones have no development at all , try finding a phone with similar hardware z maybe that will help. .

Rooting and unlocking are two different things SRSRoot will probably root it but it won't unlock it.

Get your money back, if you paid with paypal contact the seller first and if he refuses do a charge back. Knock off phone's hardware is almost always terrible, which is why the price is so low. Even if you manage to root and install a custom ROM it will never be the same experience as having the actual S3 :\. Sorry to hear all this man.
