I'm on 4.04 currently, 100% untouched. I always thought when you received a sms that the screen would turn on for a few seconds but I'm noticing this is not happening. Is this normal or have I got a problem??
Cheers

this is normal, if you want to control your notification led use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...g.android.lightflowlite&feature=search_result
but if you want your display to turn on use this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.led.notify&feature=search_result
"Sms pop up" on the market will suit your needs.
good day.
You need a different SMS app to enable this. Handcent, chomp SMS, etc. Those will do what you're asking.
There is a reason we have a notification light...tbe sccreen turning on all the time consumes battery

So I picked up a G2 to replace my Iphone 2G, which I've had since the thing came out some four years ago. I've gotten used to my screen lighting up and showing me new text messages on the lock screen, and this feature doesn't exist as far as I can tell on the G2. When I receive a text, it vibrates and plays my notification sound, and the touchpad light blinks periodically. What I would prefer, if the phone is sitting next to me on my desk, would be for it to light up and show me the text and who sent it like the Iphone does so I don't have to unlock the phone and open the messaging app just to see if it's important.
I bought widget locker so I could customize my lock screen a bit, so I suppose if there were a widget for that, I could just toss it on there? Does anyone know of this type of widget? How would I have it turn on the screen for a few seconds when I receive a text? Is this even possible?
Otherwise, I love this phone. Android does so many amazing things. It's like having a computer in my pocket!

I have not had my screen turn on with text-messages before, but there is an option to flash your LED as long as you have an unread message - would that do?
Perhaps a third-party text-messaging package can turn on the screen for you.
Thanks. No i was lookin for it to light up therefore when im sleepin n hear it go off. I can see who it is. Instead of waking up the phone. Just easier my other cell had an app for it but it wont work for the defy.

Is there an app that can display notifications and turn on the backlight when a SMS or Email comes in - When the phone is locked?
Every time a message comes in, I have to press the power button, put in my passcode, and go to the message just to see what it is.
It would be nice to get a Pop-up on the screen with most of the info
For previous Samsungs, there was an app called NoLED, which would light up the screen for notifications. You can see how that is developing for the Nexus.

NoLed works. I use it and light flow together. I never miss a notification now

You may want to try smspopup. It displays a popup when you receive a text message..
However, I'm not sure if it will display over the lock screen when you have a passcode enabled. However, it has a ton of options for managing the popup when locked, so you may want to check it out.

Does NoLed need root? :>
I did a little digging around and found NotifierPro to work best for me.
Is the screen supposed to turn on when I receive a text message and the screen is locked? I only get the sound and the light notification. But when I receive a call it turns on like it should...is this normal?
Yes, it's normal. There are some third party apps that allow the screen to turn on when a text comes in.

Thanks God. I thought I got a dud of a phone...
the screen only turns on with incoming calls. all other notifications don't.
If you do want it to turn on, you could use GoSMS, there is also an option to tur that off using that app
I hate hate hate hate this so much. It drains my battery since i receive a lot of text.
Any way to disable this without turning off notification all together or using a 3rd party app?
Go into messaging setting and uncheck where it said "show a preview of the message in the status bar"..

That is unchecked.
The items that are checked off are
Notifications and Spam settings.
I am going to try unchecking spam settings. Now i gotta wait to receive a text.
let me know if that workds 'cuz i hate my screen waking up as well
damn no luck. Was at a bar last night drinking and text myself from and to a S3.
Screen turns on everytime.
On another note that i may make a thread to ask if i can't get an answer. When you compose a email in the email client. Does the font increase? Is there a way to decrease it?

You can only turn off the screen wakeup if you use a SMS app like handcent or gosms pro. Not the ideal solution but it works. I hate using apps that duplicate functionality I already have, but had to in this case.
