Polycarbonate & Performance Issues - HTC One X

Hi guys,
Last night I was browsing the forums when I noticed someone had reported a strange issue happening to the back of their Black One X. I took mine out of its case, that it's remained in since I got it, and was angry to see a similar issue happing to my phone.
I will attach a photo, but basically the back of the phone seems to have marks on it. It looks like someone has got oil on their fingers and has then touched the back of the phone, only there is no way to get this off.
It's my third device from The Carphone Warehouse, and I'm reluctant to take it back. I've been told that due to a 'Fair Returns Policy' I will have to send my HTC off for repair rather than getting a new one from in-store. They will allow me to switch to another phone, however there is nothing really the equivalent?
Is there any such thing as a 'Fair Returns Policy' because as far as I'm concerned when you get a phone that costs this much (well this much a month) you expect it to last. Previous phones that I've had that are not flagships have never had any issues like this. Should The Carphone Warehouse return my phone despite this being my 4th device or is it within their right to tell me where to go?
Also I keep experiencing problems with the performance, sometimes when turning on the device I'll just get to the HTC screen with the green text and it will take about 15 minutes to boot and will get extremely hot during the process. When it eventually loads, the battery will be below half from what was a full charge. This has happened to me about three times, I've had the device a week.
The device is running Software number 1.29. I feel like a bit of an idiot going into The Carphone Warehouse to try and get this problem solved, and also it will be my 5th time. They have told me that they have had no returns, but I find this hard to believe considering the amount of voice on these forums stating they have returned theirs due to the same issues.
What should I do?

You should get a return. You've payed a lot of money to get a working device. If it doens't suit the demands you need to take it back and ask for a new device or a refund.
Seems fair. It doesn't matter if it's the 5th time or the 100th time that you returned the device. You've payed, you need a good/working device.

I agree with this statement, however I got the phone for free as I got it on an early-upgrade on Orange in the UK.
Well, I paid for the upgrade as I had 6 months remaining contract, but nothing for the phone.

Just get your money back, then re-buy it again (If you really want to, or wait for Galaxy S3 maybe)
I'm a lucky one which haven't had any problem yet, I also bought mine at Carphone Warehouse.

Didn't pay for the device though...

Still doesn't matter though. You need a working/decent phone. It was included in the upgrade I guess? So in a way you still payed for the device.

my first white one had it as well, but not from being in a pouch. Just from lying on the table.
It is typically "polished" plastic. Happens to all kind of platic, usually at egdes where things rub against them. I guess your phone is rubbing against the pouch the whole time so it gets shiny polished there (no kidding)
It will give a shiny spot on matte surfaces and a matte spot on shiny surfaces.

That's impossible, my device fits super tight into my case and there is no way it could move in any way at all.

If you are moving and have the phone in your pocket, the case is still rubbing on the phone, you can't prevent it. Also some kind of pressure might have been in that spot for many times.

First things first, give it a good scrub with a damp toothbrush and soap. If they wont let you swap it they -must- by law offer a refund, which in your case means they must allow you to cancel your contract without any penalties.

I tried that, it doesn't work. Saw that in a Yahoo suggestion about a Lumia. Are you sure this is the way it works?
I did not pay a penny for my phone, and as they are not Orange and I did an early upgrade I think the terms are different... They won't let me swap for an iPhone, I ok refer my One X but just sick of DOA devices!

Cracked the screen!

Dropped my HTC Touch Pro2 and its cracked the screen!
The actual LCD is fine, and the touch sensitive part still works, but the glass panel that covers the LCD has big cracks running across it.
Anyone know where i can get this repaired? or somewhere that sells the parts so i can do it myself??
Rang HTC and its about 15 pounds for an inspection and 90 quid to replace the LCD (though i don't think it actually needs replacing).
I'm pretty sure I've seen them on ebay already.
Check there.
Have the same problem.
Ordered mine here
Only searching for service manual or just manual to replace it.
thanks for the reply. does the 'touch screen digitizer' have a hard plastic/glass back to it that covers the lcd?
Just trying to make sure its the right thing.
I phoned a few repair places up and basically everyone seems to end up sending it to HTC anyway, so that sounds like the only other option. Since 90% of the cost is labour rather than parts, i think i'll try and sort it myself first
Found these dismantling instructions, in russian so had to translate
http://www.translate.google.com/tra...a/htc_touch_pro2/&sl=ru&tl=en&history_state0=
anyone used Phone Hospital?
http://www.phonehospital.com/main.html
they quoted 40 quid which seems reasonable it saves me ages dismantling the phone. can't find too much info on them though
Shame to hear that...
It´s always good to use a protective case
Sorry about the loss. But it has to be said...
This thread is worthless without pics!
well, i'm going to give that phone hospital a go. i've attached a pic. will update in case anyone else drops their phone! It was actually in a case, but i'd taken it out to reply to a txt.
Is their a case that can protect the screen whilst still allowing the phone to be fully useable?
Someone already replaced his screen manualy?
You can get a replacement digitizer for your touch pro on Ebay.
Unfortunately there is none available for the T-Mobile US version yet.

Is it really glass? How does that work with a resistive screen?

The LCD and the touch sensitive portions are just different layers. A capacitive screen just typically has a specially coated glass layer, where a resistive screen has multiple layers to get input.

got mine back from PhoneHospital and it looks fine. However, the screen isn't aligned, and the "align screen" option in the settings just goes round in a never ending loop! Waiting to see what they say...
beginning to think the best option is just to send to HTC, soak up the cost, then stick the freakin thing on ebay because its just too fragile!

Hey Ribena,
Sorry to hear about your troubles.
My doorman's young son hit his fathers PDA with a hammer. I said I would help him sort out the problem - I would be grateful if you could let me know what PhoneHospital have to say about your screen alignment issue.
Rgs,
J
its being looked at now.
after browsing the web, i get the impression a screen alignment failure is usually due to a hardware rather than software fault, so at a complete guess i'd say its the new digitizer has not been installed properly.
finally got the phone back. difficult to see how phonehospital could have been worse.
Taken 3 months, and they've finally sent it back after constant pestering by me. They said it was now working so no refund was due. Unfrotauntely, it isn't working, the screen is still misaligned and the align screen option just loops over and over.
grrr.
I think the best option is to send it to HTC, which is what i'll be doing. Might cost more but
a. it'll get fixed.
b. it hopefully won't take 3 months!
That sucks. If it took 3mons and they still didn't fix the issue id say a refund is in order. Before I sent it in to htc I'd probably try my luck at it first.

First claim with Asurion

Got in a motorcycle wreck on July 8th and ever since then voice calls have been impossible to hear or be heard clearly. I wrecked in the rain up in the North Carolina mountains and my phone took on a lot of water as I desperately tried to get a signal to call for help. I walked, but my bike was totaled.
Anywho, just filed my first claim ever with Asurion. Filing the claim was easy and they say they will overnight my new device on Monday and I should have it on Tuesday. I had them bill the $150 deductible to my Sprint bill. I'll post back with an update once I receive my phone. Hope it's painless. Well, less so than totaling my beloved Bandit 1250 at least.

Thanks!
I'm an ATGATT guy... All The Gear All The Time
I would have easily had a broken leg and ankle if it wasn't for my boots.
My leg is still swollen 3 weeks later.
Ill take swollen over broke or even dead any day again glad your allright!
damn that sucks big time. I used motorcycles as my daily driver for about 8 years straight. And definitely had my fair share of wrecks.
Some of them I am surprised it wasn't ALOT worse. glad you made it out alright. good thing is, you get to replace with new shiny aftermarket parts =]
every time i went down, I made sure I bounced back twice as hard. Had 2 custom paint jobs and other goodies
They totaled her out and hauled her off.
I still have a 91 CB750 Nighthawk to get me to work. I'm going to upgrade the suspension and use that for mountain runs for the rest of this season. This winter or spring I hope to pick up a 2012 Ninja 1000 with ABS. ABS would have saved me in this instance.
Glad your ok.. but two things come to mind...
1) if the wreck was not your fault.. you might be able to get the other guys insurance (or even your own if you're claiming) to pay the deductible on the phone.. After all they'd pay for contents of a car to a reasonable amount, no reason why a cycle shouldn't get the same treatment.
2) Next time if you suspect the phone is only water damaged (no cracks , dents etc..) you can save yourself the deductible in many cases.
There's a great little trick you can do to dry out the phone in 1-2 days and usually make it good as new.
1) Place the phone in a plastic baggie, doesn't matter what kind.. you're going to leave the end open.
2) Place about 1 cup of dry instant white rice in a 2nd plastic baggie, this one must be able to seal shut.
3) Place your phone, in bag 1, inside the bag with the rice. (The bag 1 is so rice particles do not get into your phone). Make sure the end of bag 1 is not folded under or otherwise obstructed, you want air to get in bag 1.
4) Seal up back 2, so you now have a bag of rice, with another bag with phone inside it.
5) Place the bag in as much direct sunlight as possible.. such as on a window sill and wait
Over time, the moisture in the phone will be drawn into the rice. Typically this can take between 24 and 72 hours depending on level of moisture.
I have used this trick myself when my Evo 4G got drenched in water, as a coffee pot full of water exploded over top it I called Assurion paid the deductable and waited.. however they were OUT of my phone and it took them almost 7 days to get a new one shipped out overnight. I was so pissed (epecially knowing any store near me had them in stock) that i started looking online and found this trick... tried it and my original phone was working once again perfectly before the Assurion one arrived. Unfortunately once you make a claim you cannot cancel it, so I did end up sending mine back and keeping the 'new' one.
Anyway.. glad your OK.. maybe invest in one of those waterproof, crash proof cases/boxes for you to keep your phone in on the bike
lucky you walked away a live mate
I'm sorry to hear about your bike if there's anything I can assist with.. let me know I know some good mechanics and repair engineers

You broke your phone? Bummer
Oh yeah, phone was the last thing I'm sure you were worried about was the phone although you did try to make a call for help
I have a total of four phones on my account, two months ago I made a claim and was able to bill the deductible to my Sprint account... a month later I made another claim on a different phone and I was unable to bill it to my Sprint account. I was told by Assurion and Sprint that they don't allow it to be bill to Sprint. I asked how long as the policy been in affect and they said for a year. I quickly called BS on it because I did it last month!
Anyway, glad you're doing good and that bodily injury was limited as much as it was...
Asurion has stated that due to demand they are setting a time frame of 1-3 business day to send me a replacement phone. Not shipping today and me having it tomorrow as previously stated.
On the bright side, hope this means I'll be getting new instead of refurb.
Got my replacement device today. It's new in a sealed box.
Overall, I give the process a thumbs up. :good:

Poll:Raise your hand if your screen cracked without dropping it

There have been a few posts about the "inner" screen breaking whilst the phone is in a pocket. IE That the screen is somehow deficient.
Did your screen crack in a way that you think isn't your fault?
Check in here.
I'm thinking this can be a poll type thing, without comments other than the details. There are plenty of other threads discussing the different aspects of this.
I always keep mine in my front jeans pocket and am nervous about this whole thing. Especially if no is going to warranty for this.
Again lets not devolve into a pros and cons. Just the facts please.

Mine cracked
I cracked the LCD under the gorilla glass of my TMo S4 while it was in my pocket with nothing else in my pocket. There were no cracks on the gorilla glass and it was in a protective case. I took it into the TMo store and the lady was nice enough to warranty it for me as long as I agreed she didn't see any cracks (battery was dead). She said however that it is likely they will charge me $150 after they discover the damage, which could take a couple months. That option sounded better than buying another S4 outright and it was cheaper than the $175 deductible for insurance.
So I would say, be very careful not to apply pressure to the screen. It would appear to me that they've slimmed down the phone at the sacrifice of pressure resistance, especially since my S2 is still kicking and sat a couple years in my pocket.
Cheers!

Right here with you. I posted a thread about this a while back. mine developed a hairline crack in less than 2 weeks. I still don't know how it happened, as my phone was never dropped either.
Mine has what looks like a (curved) line that goes from upper right corner to the bottom left one. But the glass is smooth and you don't feel any scratch from outside. I m pretty sure I bought it like that as I saw it during my 1st inspection of the phone (few days after purchase)
Is it cracked/scratched from inside and should I ask for replacement ? (I still have 2 days to return the phone)

Phone back from repair - not happy

Hey all,
I've sent my phone to HTC to repair an issue with the screen not recognising touch inputs in the upper part of the screen.
I received my phone yesterday - and the issue got fixed.
However, I noticed that the left side of the screen is not sticking properly to the phone. I can stick my fingernail under the screen, and when I press on it, I can hear the adhesive trying to stick, but the screen just bounces back off. There's a bit of light bleeding out the side as well.
I tried heating up the side with a hair dryer, and then press on it with a heavy object for about an hr - it was fine for a while, but peeled off again.
Here is a pic of this

I talked to HTC Support again, and I got a repair ticket opened - so I can send it back for another repair - but this means another week (at least) with no phone and I don't really want that.
My question is, is there a way for me to fix this on my own? I Googled for ideas, but not sure how to proceed. I noticed mentions about 3m double sided sticky tape, but afaik that invovles taking the whole screen off and re-applying the tape - don't want that.
I saw this UV glue (LOCA), but I noticed it's being used on the actually screen, not the sides. Will a few drops of this glue in the side of the phone be able to hold it down? Will I void the warranty if I do this?
Thanks in advance.
You will need double sided adhsevive and not loca but in order to apply it properly the screen must come off. I suggest sending it back again and let them take the responsibility.

I wouldn't even attempt to repair that. You could probably do it with epoxy or double-sided tape but it's just so intricate. You never know HTC might send you a new phone.

Never do it yourself - it is the job of HTC to fix your phone. I only repair my phone if there is no warranty left.
A great reason to send it back again, and this time demand a new device. There is no reason for service centers to behave like this, it's highly unprofessional and even the job itself is not done.
Just a quick update on the matter.
So, I decided to send it back and asked for a replacement - the HTC support guy told me he requested a replacement.
Got the phone back this week, aaaaaand it was the same phone (got a skin on it so I know for sure). That was not the problem, really, as long as the issue was solved. At first, I thought it was, but after using the phone for a bit, I noticed that now both sides of the screen are protruding. As soon as the device get a bit worm, I can see light coming out from the sides, and I can stick my fingernail underneath both sides now and lift the screen a bit.
I talked to HTC again, and they told me to send it back again and that they escalated the replacement request and bla bla...
I also attached a transcript of the conversation with them as well as a letter explaining the issue and demanding a replacement...not sure what effect these woul d have.
I feel that the repair centre never checks tickets details or things like that...I hope I'll get a proper result now.

Out of curiosity, where are you located? I sent mine to the Texas repair center for a screen issue and the repair was extremely quick and the new screen seems flawless and even better than before.
i may be wrong here as ive had this issue as well as others with htc on previous model phones , they attempt repair x3 times if unsuccessful they then replace with new device.
Shambolic customer service. No doubt you'll get it sorted eventually but this sort of negligence does HTC no favours at all. I'm in London too and maybe they're not as well set up to deal with this stuff here as they are in the states.

Have a Chance at Getting an S. Need Help Deciding.

Okay so recently I found myself with the chance to get my hands on a Tab S.
It's used, but only as a kiosk application. Everything surface wise is in perfect condition except for some slight screen burning, but that is barely noticeable, and it seems to work just find.
But I recently saw someone say to avoid display models as they tend to have weak battery life due to being on charger all day.
But I'm not sure if ones used as kiosk applications and display models are the same.
So I just figured I'd ask, should I take the chance and get this tablet? I really want an S, and this is the best chance I've found.

I'm thinking it better be pretty cheap, like about 100.00 or less. It might cost about 60.00 or so to have a shop replace the battery. They can be had on ebay for <20.00 and there are videos on youtube to show you haow to open it and change the battery. It is pretty much EOL for this model...don't think that that's official but it's got to be very close. Keep that in mind.
But...I'm also wondering if these chargers really do damage the battery being on 24/7. Don't they have protection for over charging and they seem to taper the charge rate as the battery gets closer to 100%. I know I've ruined several laptop batteries by leaving them in and on the charger. Aren't these batteries of a different technology?
Buy it cheap, do a full reset and run it and see how it does for a week..
Okay I just stumbled upon another for the same price. Not a display model this time, still used of course, the only thing wrong is it has a crack just under 1 inch long in the bottom corner of the screen.
Would this impact how well it worked? Like would I be better off getting the display model? Or would this one be perfect and the crack would just be something I'd have to get used to being there?

All things equal, I personaly would probably go with the one with the 1" crack. That's according to how prevalent the burn-in is. The burn-in more likely effects a larger portion of the screen.

Hmm, one last quick question, the screen burn ones are listed at 10.1 inch. Is there a 10.1 inch Tab S or did they just mislabel it? Don't wanna end up with a tablet that isn't even the one I want.
I would rather go with the cracked screen, but I messaged them to see if it works, and they responded with it seems to, which isn't that clear. I asked for clarification and they haven't responded yet.
there is tab A 10.1 tab S is 10.5inch
Ignored the two I spoke of and jumped on another that the best one availible on the site. Wasn't sure I'd get it as it was bidding and not buy now, and I've never won anything in my life. But I just did it ten minutes ago, cost 240 but I got it.
Oh and it's not just the tablet. It also comes in box, with the charger, usb cable, manual, a samsung smart cover case. And most important of all, an official Samsung Tab S Keyboard attachment, which considering I'm an author, or want to be one, it'll come in real handy.
Here's a pic of my spoils of war.

Oh, and unlike the other two I'd looked at, this one is 32gb's not 16.
I like success stories! Congrats, hope it works well for you! Looks nice and a decent deal I think.
BTW, I'm not sure...but I think BestBuy was the only one, or one of few, places that sold 32GB versions.
Thank you! It was a real close one. I had bid 250 which didn't change or the final six hours, but I couldn't help but feel a little gittery, been watching all this time, no way was I losing this. So in the last minute, I upped my max bid to 275, and when the auction ended it turned out someone had bid 256, but because of my raise I won for 260. It's just crazy to think how if I hadn't raised it then I would of lost.
And 32GB being rare makes alot of sense. There are very few on ebay, and the cheapest at the time was 269. And all it came with was a generic usb cable, not even the official samsung usb cable.
Wish I could tell everyone how my new tablet is, but the stupid thing isn't here yet. Spent 17 dollars on Priority Mail shipping and it's only moved one state over from where it started in the past 6 days. Priority mail my ass.
