Hi all,
I looked and tried for a while now, but I'm not able to change my boot animation on the COS ICS by roalex. A bootanimation.zip stored in system/media and/or in data/local doesn't work for me. I'm shure it changed in general in ICS. Can anybody help me please to find a way to change my boot animation?
Some ICS threads recommend to store in system/customize/resource, but I don't have a customize file.
For all changes I use root explorer.
Thanks and have a nice day!
What do you mean with "does not work"? Is any bootanimation shown or do you just get a black screen? Did you make your named it correctly and really replaced the old bootanimation?
Thanks for your answer
The bootscreen in general works. In settings I can enable and disable boot animation. When I enable boot, then the old school android boot animation is showed. I think this is maybe a fallback mode, when there is no bootanimation.zip. But I don't know.
When I look into /system/media and /data/local after a fresh installation, then there is no bootanimation.zip. Maybe the builder of this ROM has diasabled custom boot images to speed up the device (it is indeed very fast).
And because he has disabled boot animation per default, I'm not able to set up my own.
It's not the first time I created my own animation, so I'm shure it works at least in gingerbread.
My new question should be now, how to enable bootanimation in this special case, when it is disabled by default?
I suggest, that this is no big deal, when this doesn't work on this rom. I can live without a nice boot animation. It's more for my general comprehension, how android is working.

I guess you mean folder, not file, don't you?
Yes, indeed. Sorry.
Tried to create folderpath (/customize/resource) yourself and then move the bootnanimation.zip there?
BEFORE TRYING, MAKE A NANDROID-BACKUP!!!
Ok it didn't work for me. I'm a backup profi now, but nothing seems to work.
It's ok for me, I'll close this thread now.
Gracias!
It works flawless on my HTC Desire with this ROM.

I know the issue......install disk usage and tell me size of your system partition free space, then tell the size of bootanimation.....it always happens when space not enough.....Android tries to write your file, and if no space, it just shows.that file is written.....please check free space and tell.....

One thing a lot of us had trouble with going from 2.1 to 2.2 was the su app didn't like being bundled with a rom. Uninstall your su app and install the one from the market.
Let us know if this fixes it.

yes it does im assuming the stock recovery uses the red exclamation... now i have the yellow one i tried to remount and i get an error.....
so why must we adb on the 2.2 when the 2.1 all you needed was root explorer? to change boot animation and sound.....
The boot animation in 2.2 is a single .zip file. Boot animations are something I haven't gotten into much (on the EVO) so I'm not sure how it was on 2.1 but I'd guess it was more like the Hero where it was a .gif or two and a sound file.
When the boot animation is packaged in a single .zip file you can't just swap out parts of it. You'd have to unzip it, change what you want, and make sure the xml (if there's on in there) is adjusted accordingly. If you swapped the sound file for one that was of the same name you'd probably be fine to rezip and drop the whole zip back in there.
This is pure speculation though. I may be totally wrong. If I were gonna try to customize my boot though that's where I would start.

Cool, dl'ing virus rom now so I can see exactly what you're working with.
Are we sure you actually do have su permissions and it was just an issue with this boot animation package?
Can you mount your /system as R/W in root explorer?

I'm posting this to see if anyone has tried changing the boot animation on this ROM. I've tried to use the apps on the market and I grabbed a few from blackmart too, but I couldn't get the boot animation to change. I grabbed root explorer and moved files. I used android sdk and tried pushing them into the system folder. I can't get the damn boot animation to change. I'm using the filename "bootanimation.zip" correctly. Ummm at the moment that's all I can think of that I've tried. If anyone has any valuable input that might help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Once the revolution tool came out, I've become a flashaholic haha. I really like this evolved ROM. Mainly because of all the green in it everywhere. ....I'm straying from my point, Boot animation. Posted a shootme shot of my ROM and kernel that I flashed.

Via root explorer:
Copy the boot animation you have selected to data/drm. I could be wrong since I flashed out of that rom already but I think that is where it goes. Leave it as is once pasted there. Remember the name of the old one in there, delete it, then rename the new one with the old one's name. I did because I liked this one I found of android man wearing a circus like jacket that snags the Apple logo with a cane and then he comes back on dancing. If data/drm doesn't work, do system/customize/resource.
The boot animation goes in data/local, make sure you give it full permissions also just to make sure it sticks

Well I've cleared out all the bootanimation.zip files from the phone to try and get no boot animation so I can start from there. I'm still getting the "EVOlvedRoms" boot animation. I'm trying to change the animation on my AT&T branded Play. All I can get is the stock Android blue/green letters for a boot screen, which is the default android system boot screen. While this is a step in a much better direction than the crappy AT&T screen, I want a PSX or PSP boot animation on there. I've tried using a root file explorer to move it to system/media where it seems the original is found. Renaming the original so it won't use it and renaming my desired screen to bootanimation.zip. This yields only the stock Android animation though.
Does it need a special boot animation file to work? I can't believe I couldn't find anything on this through a search, either I didn't look hard enough or it doesn't exist I guess.
Any help is appreciated.
I used to flash them on my EVO but now I use Absolute System Root Tools to set the boot animation, because I used Zergrush and have a locked bootloader. I assume you have root access since you are using Root Explorer... I'm not sure how to set one with the method you're trying, but Absolute worked just fine for setting the Nexus S animation... get it... NeXus.. Xperia... lol. Good luck!

I don't know if AT&T has fiddled with your phone so it sets the boot animation with another method somehow. It should be as simple as you have done. Just replacing "bootanimation.zip" in /system/media/ with the one you download, assuming it is created correctly. I have changed mine this way to a Super Mario bootanimation and it works fine.
Also try Absolute System Root Tools as previous poster said. You can't set your own bootanimation with it though as far as I know. Just a big list to chose from.
nice one thanks , works on rooted play

Make sure when you .zip up your bootanimation. You do it with no compression. Otherwise it won't work.

Yeah, you can do this. I use the Google Edition HTC One boot animation. Just Google it and you can find the file. Simply rename it bootanimation.zip and place it in /system/media. Make sure you replace the bootanimation.zip currently in there to something else such as bootanimation.bak. You might have to change permissions to rw-r-r as well.
my /system/media doesn't have an existing bootanimation.zip. Nevertheless I placed that file in that location, set permissions and the stock Verizon animation still showed. Now I'm stumped. Pulled the file from HERE, trying both a manual addition as well as flashing the flashable zip provided.

Are you running a Sense rom? If so, the boot animations are located in System-Customize-Resource. There are two that you need to replace, one for booting up, vzw_bootup.zip, and one for shutting down, hTC_downamination.zip.

Hmm... I did this and for some reason the boot animation wasn't replaced but the down animation works fine. Side note, does the boot sound in that folder play for anyone else?

On the stock HTC ROM, to change the boot animation, you have to change two files in 'system/customize/resource/' : "htc_bootup_one.zip" and "vzw_bootup.zip" (capitalization matters). They both have to be replaced with fully functional boot animations. When I changed mine, it wouldn't work if I just changed one or the other, I had to change both.
On the stock HTC ROM, to change your down animation, you have to replace "hTC_downanimation.zip" (capitalization matters) in '/system/customize/resource/' with a functioning down animation.
On custom ROMS, you have to look to find where it's at. Sometimes it's in 'system/media' named "bootanimation.zip", sometimes it's not. Remember, it has to be a functioning replacement, otherwise it will show the stock ANDROID boot animation.

Actually, you don't have to replace the htc_bootup_one.zip. You can rename it to .bak and replace or do the same to the vzw_bootup.zip and it will work. I actually removed my htc_bootup_one.zip and replaced the vzw one and everything works fine. Probably helps that the boot up animation I use was made for the One variants that don't have anything to do with Verizon

That's very odd. Now that I try it without the "htc_bootup_one.zip", it works, but it didn't when I originally replaced it. Very, very odd.
I grabbed a flashable boot animation (including audio) from the HTC One section and was finally able to get the animation to work after messing with the .xml file. Tried to throw the audio in with it and couldn't get it to work...I'm on Bonestock and noticed there wasn't any audio with the regular boot animation...could it be the Rom? Volume is up btw.
To get a better idea of what I did I'll include the tread. I wasn't able to flash, so I had to manually replace/rename the files in my system/customize/resource folder and then change the name for the boot animation in the .xml file. I tried to follow the steps to get the audio file included as well, but it just reverted to a basic android boot animation when I attempted that.

If I recall correctly, there is an option in the XML file that tells it not to play audio when it's not the first time you set up the phone, meaning it only plays on initial setup. You need to change that setting to play every time. I don't want audio on my boot animations, so I leave it alone.

Add this code to the XML file.
Code:
audio="/system/customize/resource/MP3_file_name_here.mp3"
This is assuming the sound you want is located in the 'resource' folder. If not, give the correct path and filename. Hope this works for you.

Try this... at 30fps with only 20 images and 2 cycles it would've lasted a whole 1.33 seconds... I slowed it to 10fps and loop till boot is complete.. Don't forget to set permissions to rw-r--r-- as well

Groovy. Thanks again for all your help!
One last question, if you don't mind. I recreated the whole thing so that it'd be the resolution of the phone. The only thing I changed was the pixel dimensions in your txt file. Now, however, the boot up is just a blank screen. Any chance you may know what's wrong with the attached one? Is 1.83mb to big for a boot animation?
You zipped the whole folder... As in when I open the zip there is a folder called bootanimation... The part0 folder and the desc.txt should be at the root of the zip
