Desire Z has 512 ram. "Usable ram" may vary by a few megabytes but it's usually somewhere between 365 - 375.
Basically, you have 512. Then 128MB RAM is reserved for the GPU (think of it like on a PC, in the BIOS, you can allocate 32, 64, 128, 256 RAM to GPU). That leaves you with 384. Then some RAM is allocated to other things for the system such as radio and such and whatever is leftover is "usable RAM" which is basically for the OS and apps and such.
I just checked mine and I also have 367 "usable RAM".

how much memory for programs

I purchased the desire for the high spec, question
how much memory should you have free for programs .. ive done a hard reset and only have around 130mb of program memory free
when you read the spec its
ROM: 512 MB
RAM: 576 MB
where is the rest of the space ???
anyone got higher program memory ??? can this be changed ??
mind you i still have 40+ mb left with shed loads of programs but would like higher
superb phone though

rom with 192Mb RAM/// Why not?

Last many time but anybody and couldn't activate 32Мб RAM which locked in our devices. Why? If we had these 32Мб then it would be possible to use Sense 2,5 and windows 6,5. It is assured to that developer which will unlock RAM the people it will be grateful and will sacrifice some money
The reason that you cannot use all the ram is that 32mb is reserved for the graphics chip.
Edit: Sorry, etoy is right, my mistake, it is 64mb for the graphics chip

32 mb for a graphic chip, on a mobile device, is a lot
Maybe it would be nice to reduce this to 24mb or 16mb
i'm just guessing i don't really know if my suggestion makes sense, and if it's possible
from what i read from htc diamond details:
"Dedicated graphics chip (64MB RAM reserved for graphics)"
does the chip have its own 64 MB RAM or is it taken from the 192 MB RAM
HTC Touch Diamon have 256MB Ram (64 reserved for GFX) 192+64=256 same memory as HTC Touch Diamond CDMA P3051 have 256 ram and 256 rom (not gfx acceleration no 64mb reserved).
if 64Mb reserved for GFX, why we have not 32Mb RAM? can we resize memory for GFX?
after that you will buy another diamond!
Look here
Don't you think it would have been done already if it was a good idea or even possible? We are on the brink of getting android to work albeit with a 900(Meh) battery.
Even beter than the installed ROM in memory phone, rom be installed in internal storage (4GB) then it would be given a lot of free memory.

[Q] Verizon

I have the verizon which is supposed to have 512mb and 288mb
When I switch on all I have is 212.85 (out of 512) and 183.86 (out of 288)
What do I have to do to increase the amount of space left.

That is what you should have. Not all of the ROM and RAM are user accessible. You only have access to 265MB of ROM internal storage space. The rest is for the ROM image itself. As for the RAM, you only get 183.6MB out of 288 MB total. The rest is reserved for radio and system process usage.

RAM in Galaxy Nexus: why only 693 M?

Our device has a 1 GB RAM chip. Why do we see only 693 MB available? On other 1 GB phones the available RAM is at least 850 MB, sometimes even 920..940 MB. Where is the remaining RAM in Nexus?
for the GPU

Is it possible to redistribute this memory like in PCs with integrated video?

How can the Rhodium Have 288 MB Ram?

Ram doesn't come in 288MB chips. Ram comes in 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, etc. Yet every where I look the rhodium is advertised as 288MB of ram without an explination as to the weird number
I'm going to guess 256+32=288. But, I don't know enough about the circuit board to tell you if they used two chips or not.
