[Q] Beachproof GSM Galaxy Nexus case - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I work at the beach during the summer and every year my phone gets destroyed by the sand. Does anyone know of a good case for this, (similar to an otter box defender but with camera protection) and if it was waterproof that is even better(but not necessary). Thanks!

Easiest and cheapest solution is just to put it in a Ziploc bag.

I've done this, works great. You can even use the touchscreen through the plastic with a minor loss in sensitivity.

Sand and phones scares the hell out of me!
I would wrap some tape around the zip on that bag too!

yep, zipbag is smart phones best friend at the beach. I learned it the hard way with my previous phone. Sand hates screen.

Have you looked into pelican cases.
We use them in the military they are awesome. Only down side is they are hard cases so you could not use it while its in case. But it will keep your phone dry and sandless

You could try the iottie skin. Search Amazon for it. Its kinda pricy though

If I were you, I'd buy a "beater" phone. I wouldn't dare take my phone near sand. I live in the Caribbean. I know what sandy phones feel like.

Check lifeproof.com they make a waterproof case for the other company(iPhone) and are supposed to make for certain androids also not sure if they made them yet

Sadly my favourite case for heading out on the boat when scuba-diving does not fit our "larger" Galaxy:

I use one with my older HTC Desire.
But you might find another option that will on this site...

pretty much....i believe there's an official water proof skin that fits snug over the device

Believe it or not...
I use my food saver vacuum to wrap up my phone when I go fishing. Works great. No chance of it accidentally coming open. When I'm back home, simply wash the outside, break open the seal and remove phone.

The ultimate screen protector.

Face it, why do we need screen protectors? To protect the screen from our pointy fingers? No. To protect it when we drop heavy objects on our EVO's? Lol, if you are doing that a screen protector wont help. To protect the screen if we drop the phone? That's what the case is for.
So why? The #1 reason we use screen protectors is to prevent scratching the glass when we put the phone in our pockets.
If you are like me and use a silicone case, that screen protector gets pretty scuffed up coming in and out of your pocket and lint sticks like crazy to the case.
Walking through the mall today I stopped by the sunglasses vestibule. There for $4 there were selling these little soft sunglass pouches made of microfiber. I thought hmmmm, pulled out my EVO, dropped it in and put it in my pocket.
No scratches, no lint and I can polish finger marks off the screen just by rubbing the inside of the pouch against it. Also, instead of struggling to grasp the phone, I just grab the top of the pouch and pull it out.
Anyway, now I can have my phone in my pocket without worrying about lint or scratches and I have a carry-along polishing cloth right there.
You can probably buy one of these at any mall. Give it a try.

I knew when I posted this people would rag on me, but seriously, it really does work.
of course it would...wrapping your phone in plastic wrap would probably yield the same results..
my girlfriend has been doing it this way the whole time she's had her evo. her hero just rolled around in her purse and got all scratched up. so for two days I didn't let her purse it. then we found this method works awesome.

Except for the fact that it would be incredibly impractical and look like hell. On the other hand this method is EXTREMELY practical and looks great. lol, can you imagine removing your phone from plastic wrap every time you wanted to use it? ** Fail **

Yep, I only wish those who are making fun of my idea would actually try it:
1) No more scratches on your screen, screen protector or phone body.
2) No pocket lint stuck all over your case.
3) Much easier to take out of your pocket (even in skinny jeans).
4) Super easy way to wipe the oil slick off your screen.
5) Much easier to remove from the pouch than from a snug fitting leather case.
6) Slimmest possible pocket solution.
Oh well, if they enjoy having their phones beat to hell that's not my problem.
Yeah I've known folks to put their phones in their glasses bag / pouch / sack. Not a bad idea and you do get a little touchscreen wipe as well. I usually use my shirt, soft material, to give it a quick clean.

Oh never mind.
Pete
The N1 came with a microfiber lined pouch. Worked just like the pouch you described. One of my favorite accessories for my N1. Wish the EVO had come with one.
I am using the little pouch that came with my MyTouch that is made of microfiber. The Evo fits(barely) and it does protect it like the OP says. I just got this EVO 2 days ago and am waiting for my invisableshield to come in the mail and am using this method until it arrives. It is a little inconvenient and the phone still could get scratched from the plastic thingy used to close the case if you are not careful, but all in all it works. By the way I got a full body invisible protector for free. I just paid something like $2.85USD for shipping. Great Deal!
Thanks for the positive replies. Since I have gotten my EVO purse (I feel like George Castanza) it is the first time I have been able to put my phone in my pocket and absolutely not worry for a second about scratching the screen.
Like Occam's Razor Theory says, "The simplest solution is usually the best".

Thanks op. Does anyone know who makes the N1 pouches? Maybe they have different ones for sale that say "HTC" on them.
via EVO.
Just go to your local mall and check out the carts where they sell sunglasses. They usually have lots of them to choose from for a few bucks.

Where I live, it is usually cold enough that you can wear a jacket. I always buy jackets with an inside pocket by my chest. As a result, I have a similar built in pouch in my jacket where the phone stays safe with nothing else touching it but material.
However, those 40 days where it's hot (in the 70's and low 80's), I have to find other ways...
I like to circumvent the entire dust issue by just using a holster.
Good idea, I've been doing this intermittently for months... Only bummer is that when the phone rings, you have to pull out from your pocket AND then out of the bag. The extra step has resulted in missed phone calls

Carbon fiber-look back for GN

I found the back of my Galaxy Nexus to be a little too slippery, and I had a spare piece of 3M carbon fiber material laying around.
I decided to go ahead and cut it to fit my GN. No worries about that darn Verizon Wireless logo on the back now
I got the material from this guy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703496
That looks awesome lol. How thick is the carbon? Just like paper thin?

Yeah, it's very thin.

Eh. I'm not allowed to look at that link yet... I hate being a noobie. lol That does look REALLY nice! I am going to have to do this also. Thanks!
I have that 3M too, but I am afraid the plastic battery cover might get weak since it needs to be heated to apply.. is it safe to blow dry the plastic battey cover based on your experience?

it doesnt need to be heated to apply, I had this carbon fiber on my T-mo GS2 and didnt require to doanything but just apply with solution and let it dry, but this doesnt protect your phone if it drops, so basically pointless, I rather get otterbox, but not sure if it works on gsm version, still puzzled here.
Pretty cool idea, I may look into this.
i am assuming you used 3M DI-NOC? does it stick well to the bumpy surface of the battery door?
Yes, 3M Dinoc and it seems to be holding just fine. I trimmed it just a little bit short but no heat was required just peel the back off and stick

Just bought two 4" x 8" pieces for my phone off ebay for $1.98 shipped thanks!

This does indeed look great. I just want and got some CF Vinyl online to do this myself! (Though I think I'll add an Autobots insignia to it as an homage to when this was the Prime XD)
That loos nice! Doubt i could get it looking that good, even if i had the materials.
I've never had any experience cutting or measuring out 3M DI-NOC. does it cut fairly easily? Any tips or anything to watch for when I make my attempt?
It cuts easily. Trace a pattern from your battery door onto the backing of the 3M then cut about 1mm inside of that all around. Use a sharp Xacto knife.

waterproof case

Hey does anyone know of a reliable waterproof case for our phone?
I like to go fishing salmon in the fall and would like to be able to have my phone with me in my waders and not have to worry if it gets a little wet. I know the Iphone has some water proof cases. but do we?
I have not seen a dedicated waterproof case for this phone. Last weekend we went to the football game and it was raining hard so I used a quart sized freezer ziploc bag. Kept phone in my casemate tough case and touchscreen still worked thru the bag. Ghetto, hell yeah but phone stayed dry.
I actually seen one it was at the bait store/ marina i go to... Ill get the name of it... I dont think you can call with it but you can do everything else with it text surf web so on

+1 on the ziplock bag, saved my phone during a canoe trip once. Just leave a bit of air in it also not too much and it floats when it falls in the water. I'm sure a waterproof case wouldn't mean much if my phone had sunk the the bottom.
I'm always out in the rain with my phone (field training in the Army). I use snack size zip lock bags every time. It rubs a lot because of sand that get in my pouches or pockets but even if there are a few holes, there won't be too much moisture that gets in. Sometimes the bag comes unzipped, to fix it just tape the opening. Trust me, this phone has been through a lot! I have a zag (or zagg?) shield screen protector so the plastic bag actually sticks to the screen like a second screen protector

I'm using this case on my Note 10.1, in fact I've used IVSO cases on my previous tabs also.
My OG Tab 7 was knocked off tables, couches, etc onto laminate floor/tiled flooring a few times, the only time it came out of the case was when it was knocked out of my hands as I was actually using it. Luckily, landed on a carpeted floor.
In these IVSO case's it is pretty safe from knocks or drops.
Better off getting a case that has a fastener on it or a clip than a magnet one, after viewing the online manual for the 10.1 it clearly says stay away from magnets.
I never use mine while in the case, not only does it attract dust it also has poorer reception with the s pen.
Going to get a better one when find a case without a magnet

Does anyone not use a case on their S3?

(First of all, I'd like to say I'm not sure if I've posted this in the right section - I know how people here feel about that. So I'd like to apologise first.)
As the title says, I'm just wondering if there are people out there who don't use a case at all on their phone. Also, if you don't, why don't you. To those that don't use a cover, how has your phone fared in the time since you got it?
I've been using a case on mine since the day I got it. Today I took it off and forgot how nice the phone feels without a case. I'm feeling like I'd like to not use a case for a while to see how the phone fares in day-to-day life.
So, yeah, any comments are welcome, and thanks in advance!

I haven't put a single case on any smartphone i've owned until I got my S3. And I can't remember the last time I've dropped my smartphone on the ground (KNOCK ON WOOD) so that's how careful I am with my phones but I fully respect and appreciate the concept of accidents.
Searching on Youtube for "S3 drop tests" should tell you why. Every single video i've seen has demonstrated how much damage the S3 fares when dropped on the ground. That was enough to convince me to slap a case on it.
I did a weekend with no case recently cause I liked the feel of a naked phone. Then at a family party someone runs into me as I was standing there texting a friend and I drop and scratch the side of my phone. Nothing Broke but the scratch
Made me sad.

I've never dropped any phone I've had before either. That's why I figured I'd give not wearing a case a go.
I actually used a case on every phone I had. Looking back, it was kinda a waste because I never dropped the things.
The gs3 unfortunately feels like it could snap at a fall of a couple centimetres though.

I don't shell out a few hundred and not protect my phone. Reason I always put a case is for resale value. Sold my S3 pretty fast since it was in perfect condition.

I used to be very protective and used an xtremeguard on the front screen and the back cover, along with a belkin tpu case. But I ended up taking all of it off because my OCD always kicked in when I saw dust caught on the edges of the case, and when the sides my xtremeguard lifted up slightly due to the case. The only protection I have now is that I cut out a small piece of my xtremeguard and carefully applied it to the camera lens so that it doesn't get scratched when I place the phone on the table.
I have been running my S3 this way for almost a month now, and it is still flawless. And I am very careful with my electronics so I expect it to be in pristine condition until it's time for an upgrade.
I just stopped using a case on my phone about a week ago. When its not in a case like super protective of it tho

Naked and proud!
The only thing I have on the phone is the clear shield protection. It is very thin and feels as if you are naked.
I have tried using the Rock case but couldn't go pass more than an hr. I have dropped the phone a couple of times and actually kicked it once trying to catch it in the air. Very minor scratch in the corner.

For hands like mine, SIII is just too thin to hold without case
If I remember correctly, only one of my phones ever had a screen cover (HTC Compact IV). Apart from that one, every phone has been how the designer(s) intended the phone to be.
I keep my phone in a PDA belt pouch and occassionally in an empty pocket in my trousers.
I treat the £500 phone with the care of a £500 piece of equipment I cannot afford to replace if damaged.
