Hi guys,
I'm running my stock (but rooted) ROM, is there any way to update the included version of Swype? I love Swype but the version shipped is 2.2.42 which, from my looks online, is fairly ancient.
Since it is part of the ROM, I presume this all but rules out just installing an updated apk over the top.

That's interesting, i would also like to know if that's possible!
I just tried this.
1. use root explorer to delete swype.apk in /system/app/
2. use root explorer to search "swype" in /system/lib/ and delete the one you find
(sorry, I forget the file name. it's like "libswype" or something~)
3. download and install the swype you need
4. use root explorer to move swype.apk from /data/app/ to /system/app/
It works.
I'm not sure what the libswype thing is, so it would be better to have a nandroid backup before trying this.
I have found a way to install the latest beta Swype on any device that comes with Swype pre-installed. Follow the directions below, originally posted on the Swype forums for the Droid X;

Get a root file manager (I use root explorer)
1. Change your default input method to anything other than Swype.
2. Mount file system as R/W
3. Delete (or move/rename) \system\app\swype.apk
4. Delete (or move/rename) \data\dalvik-cache\[email protected]@[email protected]
5. Delete (or move/rename) \system\lib\libSwypeCore.so
6. Reboot
7. Download and Run the latest Swype Beta installer
8. ENJOY!
I hold no responsibility if you screw up your system, and recommend you make a backup before attempting this, but, the above steps worked perfectly for me, and I am now running the latest Swype beta on my X.
These steps should also work on other models that come pre-installed with Swype from the factory, but I don't have another one to test, so have no way of being sure. If anyone tries it, let me know if it works for you!
(One thing. I found that after install, swyping letters wouldn't create words in the msg box. To possibly avoid this, go to tutorial in the Swype installer just after install and type any words and then finish, you should be good to go )
sooo i did as above but as soon as i click in a text input it opens the keyboard and then closes instantly...
As long as you follow every step, it should work.try un-installing the swype app and using the swype installer again, and reboot for good measure. I can tell you this has worked for me on 2.21 stock rooted rom.

ok got it working thanks.
Many Thanks
Works like a charm!
Now it is possible to install/make a custom wordlist and use it without the complaints by swype that another word exist with the same spelling and it should be deleted popup!!
Great!
Thanks for the guide. Worked easily for me. The beta version seems better than the one that came with my defy+.
Cheers,
Nova
The beta version is a way better than the pre-installed one!
I lost mine updating to ms2ginger 3.0.
Took it back from their site
No regrets
I just rooted and flashed CM6.1.2 last night. Before I flashed it, I made a backup of Swype (that came pre-loaded on the phone) with Titanium Backup.
After flashing CM6, I noticed in Titanium Backup that Swype was listed at the bottom in gray, crossed out. I'm not able to restore it.
I signed up for the beta on Swype's site, got the installer, installed Swype, and it's back again... but I'm sure this isn't the same deal because it's a "beta" and I don't want it to expire. I have no desire to go back to factory image because of the Sprint and HTC bloatware.
tl;dr: how can I get my actual copy of Swype (that was pre-installed) back?
Well, there's two options:
1) Stick with the beta (recommended) because even if it "expires", just fire up the installer and get the new version. It will always have a newer, better, faster version than Sense.
2) If for some reason you're hell-bent on keeping the older version of Swype from Sense, rip the Swype.apk from /system/app/ and libswype.so from /system/lib/ from a Sense ROM, then copy them to the respective places once you've loaded CM again via Nandroid backup+restore.
Seriously though, stick with the beta. It's already ahead of the Sense version, and is getting updated within the next few weeks, plus you don't have to re-install it every time you flash an update to your ROM (whereas with the Sense one, you'd have to re-copy the files, each, and, every, time, you, flash, an, update).
So I just flashed CM 6.12 last night and now I'm trying to get Swype back (not that the CM keyboard isn't great, because it is, I just love Swype is all).
I just signed up for the beta again, got the installer, installed it, then when I try to type, I get this:
"The Swype package you installed is configured for another device and will operate with limited functionality. Please contact Swype about this issue."

Strange... just tried this, was able to type "hello" but at the same time the same message came up; now it's not swyping any more words.
rerun the beta installer, dont rush it, after enabling swype, then selecting it in the input method choice box that prompts during the installer, wait for it to license, most people rush to use it at that point but it can take a few seconds to license
Hi all,
here's how to use the new Swype beta v3.0 with awesome new features:
1. Backup your existing Swype version with Titanium Backup.
2. Uninstall your existing Swype with Titanium Backup.
3. Go to http://beta.swype.com/ , sign up and complete all the steps.
4. Complete!
That was easy
(Even though the Swype website states, that it isn't possible to use this new version on devices that came preinstalled with Swype...)
downloaded and working fine
But it only lasts 6 months before dying completely (I'm an old Archos original swype beta man) - so perhaps best to wait for "official" upgrade.
thank you js...i tried it before i read your post and somehow missed the warning about not installing...anyway thanks to your post, i tried it and it is AWESOME!! by the way, what was major c meaning when he said it would be only for 6 months? do it get disabled automatically? if so, can we go back to the old version cause we had saved it in titanium? kindly guide.
What changes it includes from the old swype??
Yeah if you read the beta sign up agreement biff it expires after 6 months. There will likely be an update before that happens though, so it's a rolling thing.
Is the update that much better than what we have on galaxy sii stock though? I.e. is it worth it?

OMG!! trust me guys...this is just awesome...no! really unbelievably A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!
the keyboard has been upgraded in the landscape version...the space bar is made a bit small so that it fits comfortably for the thumb (if need be)...the word replacement is excellent and its just like the android stock keyboard word suggestor (no pop up windows). the accuracy is wonderfull...i had started out only recently and i could do a fair but of speed too...all in all it is a must have
HOWEVER!! (isnt that always so)
i had to go back to the stock swype cause i have having problems...like it just stopped working...but when i had it it was a world of fun...its certainly worth a try and going back to the stock is very easy with titanium please do yourselves a favour and try it
I try to uninstall swype using Titanium Backup but I get "Cannot Mount" error. I am uninstalling it wrong by using the bottom option on the long hold?
Nevermind, just used Root Explorer and did it manually.

yes you did it wrong, just click apps once, quickly, then choose un-install.
The long press stuff is not needed.
The new Swype is AMAZING. I love that the suggestions do not pop up on the screen any more. There is just a suggestion bar like the default keyboard

But how about the languages? Is there a way to get danish to Swype 3 beta?
This Keyboard is great, damn good find.
Thank you very much!
So I backed up, uninstalled and installed perfectly, no issues. When the phone is restarted, the licensing check fails because the SGS II uses some kind of quick boot which withholds information swype needs on boot. Tried wiping data for swype and installer, the only way to get it working again was to reinstall swype (not installer) let me know if anyone else has replicated this issue. From what I have read, this is the issue with a couple of samsung and htc phones.

I had the same problem.
So I ran the swype installer again, and it said it needed to be re-licensed. I did all it wanted, and it still didn't work.
So I then used titanium pro to uninstall the swype app (not the installer) and THEN used the installer to download and install swype AGAIN.
That worked.
But what was different now is that I turned my phone OFF, and restarted it - and swype is still licensed!
Villain rom 1.4, tegrak overclock.
Maybe using the reboot option stuffs up the license on some roms; try turning the phone OFF and restarting it.

Interesting point. Restart may use some kind of warm boot so it's quick?
I am trying to install the newest update to Swype on my Defy, but I cannot get past the part on the installer that says
"Swype is not properly licened. To Fix - Press "Disable Swype" and 1) uncheck the box next to Swype then, 2) hit BACK button to return and generate license"
I cannot uncheck the box next to Swype, as there is no check box, just settings.
Any idea of how to bypass this so I can update?
Reinstall it again. Instructions should have been emailed to you. Did you uninstall your old swype first. ?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Or better still just from swype, select default key input instead of swype. Then only install the new beta swype. It can not install since you're currently using it as your default key input.
Thanks for the reply guys.
I don't think I can uninstall it first. It was installed stock on my Defy. Not sure how to remove.
Also, I did set my default input back to multi-touch keyboard. That was step 1 the installer, the next step was to uncheck the box to disable it, but there is no box.
Instructions are not via e-mail, but they are clearly written on the applications installer upon trying to install. Just the instruction does not make sense in a case where you cannot check/uncheck to disable.
Just tried as well and can't get it to install BETA Swype and can't uninstall old pre-installed swype. Looks like you need to root the phone and remove the original apk's
Yeah, I also had this issue. You do need a rooted phone (edit: I used SuperOneClickv1.9.5-ShortFuse to root my phone) to be able to uninstall stock swype - i used titanium backup root.
Then install worked fine.
Now I sometimes get this issue:
'Load of EnglishUK failed' - Probably means it couldn't load my library, but not certain. Upon relaunching the app (messages in this case) it didn't show anymore.
That's why i guess it's beta. It's still better than the version that came on the stock rom.
i just went back to swype 2.51 its much better
but not for chinese
i just want to a swype which can use for chinese, but i can't find one. the swype of chinese cannot even beat QQ input at all,but i perfer Baidu input.they r for chinese.
Thanks tecjam. Yeah, I used Titanium to back up and uninstall the stock Swype incase I don't like this beta. So far so good though.
Thanks everybody for replying.
Oddly, I cannot reinstall Swype how I used to. I have the lib file as well as the Swype.apk and I would usually push it through using ADB. It got pushed successfully and I could use Swype as a NORMAL keyboard but I cannot Swype. There is a blue box around the Swype keyboard after I try to swype. Ultimately, I get a message that says the Swype was installed for a device that is not the current device that I am trying to install it on. It worked just fine on all past CM7. I realize we're on 2.3.7 now but how come it doesn't work? What was the drastic change?
I'd also like to know why it's not working anymore. I followed the same procedure I always do to restore it after installing a new version of CM, but it's not letting me swipe words.
this exact same thing happened on g-lite yesterday to me had to restore to previous rom...weird!
Edit your /system/build.prop
Back to:
ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2
ro.product.brand=tmobile
reboot...profit...
that would have been helpful last night or this morning lol. Either way it was giving all kinds of weird problems and no amount of superwiping would fix the random reboots. I only flashed g-lite to overclock boo

I use ES File Explorer... it's free in the Market. You just need to enable read/write in the Settings and you'll be ready to go. I edit mine in the way mentioned above after every ROM update. I like to use T-Mobile's My Account/My Device apps. Works perfectly. Reboot after you make the change.
Or you could just download the installer from sype beta and install swype. Pretty basic

Yeah, I was wondering why you folks don't just do that, instead of messing with ADB and editing system files.
would you be able to describe the steps in detail, the above descriptions are way to vague. Any help would be appreciated, I too have swype and it is not working properly. Thanks Greg
go to the swype beta site (make sure you uninstall all traces of swype) register and in your email you get a link for your phone...it will download an installer apk install that, start it up and it will download and install the latest swype....thats it.
Sweet it works

I contacted Swype about this issue.
They responded and said that Swype does not (and will not) support custom ROMs of any kind. Your best bet is the beta.
See: http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...gn=Feed:+xda-developers/ShsH+(xda-developers)
I'm surprised it worked on CM for as long as it did. What puzzles me, is in the statement above they say its ok for devs to include Swype in roms for phones that had Swype preinstalled (same version must be provided). I may contact Swype again based on that.

the old version of swype that i had, 1.64.x worked with cm7.0.3, but not with cm7.1.0. i downloaded the new version of swype, 3.25.x, and it works with cm7.1.0
Thanks, everyone! Took more steps than the old Swype Restore method for the RC.
My steps:
Uninstall Swype using Titanium Backup.
Download APK from Swype website (after signing up)
Install APK
Select OPEN button
Login to my Swype beta account
Enter account code (email)
Select all languages (because there was no English only option)
Open Android keyboard
Go to keyboard settings
Select Swype
Accept EULA
I got the Swype beta and hate it . I get more wrong words than the stock Swype. I've tried different settings still getting dumb words popping up.

I found the answer over on the Swype Beta forums...
I would suggest using THIS method for uninstalling your old swype
Go to Settings -> Language & Keyboard and UNCHECK Swype.
Go to Settings -> Applications -> Swype Press CLEAR DATA. Then press UNINSTALL.
Go to Settings -> Applications -> SwypeInstaller Press CLEAR DATA. Then press UNINSTALL. (won't have this- maybe Swype Restore?)
Delete everything from the download directory on your SDcard
Reboot your device.
Install the update latest version of Swype. (As detailed in an earlier post)
It seems the data from the old swype was causing a problem with the latest version.
Sounds like a good habit, because if you have any trouble they will want you to do
that anyway...
