Galaxy Nexus getting too hot! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi.
Recently my Nexus (GSM) is getting way too hot even when doing normal stuff like browsing the gallery or surfing the web.
I tried full wiping and installed different ROMs and Kernels but it didn't solve the issue. (Without even installing any app or restoring any backup)
I noticed that this mainly happens when I turn on my Wi-Fi.
Any help/tip will be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your not over locked in the rom your running or replace your battery. Even take it into the store and get a replacement its a manufacture issue

Cm9 with default kernel keeps mine cool. Switching to Franco's kernel(milestone 3) makes it hot even when just listening to offline podcast and screen off. It overclocks from 1.2 to 1.34.
Try cm9

Hey man. Thanks for the help. Everything's OK now.
Much appreciated.

Verizon nexus same problem
I've noticed with my Verizon Nexus that i run into the same problem some times. When i have 4g hotspot on and it is plugged in to the wall charger it gets really hot. But the first time I noticed it getting hot was in my car running Google nav and trying to listen to music through the radio at the same time. I was thinking it might have been the defroster heating it up because it was right above my vents. But I've been noticing it at home a lot. Well anyway I'm gonna try running some different kernels.

In the VZW Galaxy Nexus (and I assume others, but there are some variation), the top part of the phone, around the camera, is where the processor, wifi radio, and LTE radio, are all located. If you're doing anything data intensive on wifi or lte, you'll notice a warmup. If you're doing anything on both, it will probably get hotter. I have a scheduled Titanium Backup run every night at 3am, and then have it upload to dropbox. It gets a bit warm, but cools back down to idling temps shortly after.

My CPU runs @ 65 degrees when Im browsing, im pretty sure thats not normal

[Q] Heat issue

Anyone been having weird heat issues. When using Nav or tethering it sometimes gets really hot and then reboots. After the reboot everything FCs and I have to reload from backup.
This has happened on several different ROMs, 2.2 and 2.3
Thoughts
Currently running EG22 with Kernel Plus. It might happen less on this OS.
Be careful man, tethering WILL get your phone hot. I've abused my epic by tethering 4G to my PS3 to play Black Ops whilist downloading Movies simultaneously and then downloding more movies as I slept. All in all, my battery smells like hot Cocoa or a weird Lime-Tangy scent after prolonged regular use and I don't tether anymore. Lol
SchizioPunk's Epic Experience 2.1 Eclair -> Odin to EC05 Froyo. Rooted. Bloatware Removed. Voodoo Sound V9 Module Loaded. TouchWiz4. Enjoying my Customized Stock Experience.
My A/C died in my car and my Nav was causing heat. I knew it was because I was taxing the hell out of the poor thing in the heat. It was like 96 out.
It's wat happens when u got urself a girl with sooo many feature's and a sleek design
I used the wireless tether app and the back of my phone was crazy hot after only 5 minutes. It's a shame that the phone can't handle the processing power & network load without nearing device failure due to insufficient heat dispersion/management.

Yup. heavy data use makes mine get HOT. Navigation and netflix, sometimes even just surfing or using Pandora.
Oh man, when I forget to back off my overclocking from 1400, I can cook an an egg on it when tethering or using Hotspot

its nice to know that this isnt to out of the ordinary. i was getting ready to flash back to shock and return the phone to sprint. i still might to that but we'll see.
mine has even gotten hot once or twice just from charging. has anyone else had that happen?
Yeah.. you know sometimes its an app, or the intervals you mess your sync to, the phone is only as good as its owner.

[Q] Which Android fixes overheating?

Do the 4.0.3 ROMS fix the overheating at the top and other battery drain issues? I'm on and been using 4.0.2 ROMS.

I have no idea what to flash! So much good stuff out but so many different reviews!!!

Strange, I don't have that overheating issue. And I am still using 4.01

I've had it since day one and a bunch of other people have too I just don't know of 0.3 fixes this and the battery drain issues.

Its not so much a fix, as an improvement. Heavy 4g or calls still heat the phone up, but not as bad. remember that there are a lot of fast electronics crammed into a tight space, so its always going to get warm/hot. It seems to come down to better battery use. Its only getting better and better.

data/voice will always heat up your phone. simple as that. i'm just glad that playing games dosn't seem to overheat it.
on my nexus one, if i was playing a kairosoft game my battery got up to 115F+ in no time.
Yeah, when the device is actually being used, its going to heat up no matter what you are doing. But just like a regular PC, it depends on the load of the tasks as well
No overheating problems here. I would hope Samsung has a failsafe and shutdown if it overheats. Otherwise I only get hot when playing a netflix movie over mhl. Amazon movies get warm. Everything is not even a concern.

Phone gets very HOT

I have had my Galaxy Nexus for a cupple of months now and I noticed that it get so ****ing HOT. I can feel that it burns a little bit in my pocket when the phone is there. The strange thing is that it gets this hot only when I am not connected to wifi or are at a place where the 3g connextion isn't that good, on the buss for example. So what do you guys think that I shuld do? Can I even return it now?
Thanks for answers

Same thing happens to me and my wife's phone. It's gotta be the 3g chip.

Are you going to try and return it?
Also could be the kernel i have the same problem though
The only time I have noticed my phone getting very hot is when I stream music or use Wifi-tether.
Mine gets very hot only when I'm downloading torrents and don't have a wifi connection.
What baseband are you on? Was trying to sort out my phones heat and accompanying drain for ages! Exactly the same symptoms (only when using 3g, particularly with poor signal.) . Turns out my issue was baseband. Switched from kk6 to kl1 and so much better. Might be worth experimenting.

Also it would only get hot like that is data connection is consistently working. You might want to also check if there are apps that are constantly connecting in the background that you don't really need.

It solved your problems with the phone getting hot?

Well yes I have apps that requires data connection like twitter but I think a Smart phone like Galaxy Nexus should be able to handle that without getting super hot.
I have a cdma galaxy nexus and my phone gets really hot also but i notice when my phone gets hot it is when their is crappy signal or low 3g signal

Yeah, I'd definately give it a shot. I'm in UK and KL1 seems pretty good to me. Tried quite a few and ALL were better than kk6! Like a completely different phone after!

My old one used to do that as well and it was a radio hardware issue. Received a replacement and all is well. I was within the 1 year warranty.

It was actually my 2nd replacement. My first issue was with the phone bootlooping (not related to ROMs) after about 3 months after purchase (only rooted). It was that replacement when the radios sucked. Phone was always hot and it ate through a full charge in about 4 hours. The phone was going into a deep sleep when inactive (verified with CPUSpy) and the Phone was eating the wakelock (BetterBatteryStats) as it kept looking for a signal. Didn't matter which radios I used (4.0.2 or 4.0.4) the results were the same.
Turned that phone in stating just the phone was eating the battery looking for a signal (battery showed red for phone signal) and they sent another replacement. This one is ok (running Gummy 1.0.1 with 4.0.4 radios).
I can vouch for this. I usually have my wifi on at work and at home with no heat issues at all. But the last two nights I was at chili's which had no wifi so I turned my 3g on and within 10 mins of super slow browsing my phone was getting ridiculously hot. I read on another thread that if the 3g signal is low or weak then it will continuously ping the server which causes something inside to heat up very quickly whether its the radio or cpu. This is definitely an issue but I'm not sure if its fixable with a new kernel or radio flash.

Hello.
For several days I have exactly the same problem.
Since I install AOKP milestone 5 and franco.kernel milestone 3, my phone started strongly hot.
Temperatures can reach 66 degrees, and the rear cover gets really hot.
Is it a hardware defect or problem is in the settings or Rom/kernel?

I didn't had the time yestorday should be able to do it today!
The only problem is that I dont have acess to 3g right now, changing carrier.
Had the phone today and It never got hot so something is fishy with the 3g ship/singnal.

Does anyone else's Nexus get incredibly hot?

After about 30 minutes of continuous use, the top half (especially the top inch) of my phone is extremely hot. I have LTE, wifi, and Bluetooth disabled with the brightness on minimum. Not sure what is causing this. Running AOKP b38 with stock CPU settings. What's up with this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
If you just got the phone, get it replaced, that's all I can tell you. You can try to bring it back to stock first.
My first Nexus also gets really hot, although it was the GSM version, different roms and kernel has no effect. I got it replaced and the second one doesn't get so hot anymore.
I see that you have a Galaxy S III, maybe get rid of the Nexus and just stick with the SIII.
You could have an app constantly running in the background eating processes.

I've noticed my phone seems to run hotter with AOKP Build 38 as well. Not sure if its just the Kernel (usually run Francos but am using the one that came with AOKP this time) or what.
One thing I have noticed and its probably not the same for you... is that my exchange account I have synced will periodically lose its account and resync from scratch. I'm running CPU at 1420 right now and when it does this sync my phone definitely gets warm. I even tried running at the stock 1200 and phone still gets fairly warm. With Francos on my previous ROMs my phone never really got too hot running 1365 Mhz.
I find that the Franco Updater widget is helpful for keeping track of CPU settings. You can tap it to update it and get realtime CPU freq reporting
Depends on how you define extremely hot for your Gnex,
If your on 4G LTE (constant to continous use of data, e.g streaming, browsing or downloading) the device being hot (feel to touch) should be normal, I would say around 38-45 celcius
This may also depend on ambient temperatures

SGH-i747m overheating

Hello there xda. I bought my first SGH-i747m(Canada Bell version) and it had a pretty serious heat problem when I did use my cellphone doing anything for more than 5 minutes. After 15 minutes it usually bothers me too much so I just stop using my device.
I didn't try anything to fix it yet other than using a JB rom(ParanoidAndroid) on both my first device, and now my second device. They both do the absolute same thing. The bottom half gets really hot while the top half stays really cool.
Is that a common thing? If so, is there any fixes? It's really horrible to use a half hot/cold device, even worse than using a fully hot device.
Nah
Try turning Powersave On.
I had issues with overheating too.
Now they are all gone.
I'm running Nostalgia 7.5
It gets hot at the bottom because that's where the CPU and all that good stuff are, and that good stuff gets hot. Mine doesn't get crazy hot down there but it is definitely warmer down there then the top, that much is normal. Yours may be to hot down there however... Idk. But I've seen others with this issue cool the phone down with custom kernels. I've also seen people say custom kernels make there phone hotter.. Try it out.

I'm on custom JB, so there' no "powersave".
I guess I'll try different kernels etc. I'm quite close to actually selling the device, overheating is one of my pet peeves.
Are you sure its overheating?
Like the gentleman a few posts up said. Depending on how you use it. The phone will get warm.
It should never be actually hot, to the point where it will harm you if you pick it up.

try going back to stock, all of a sudden the phone doesnt get as hot.
or try underclocking your kernel on custom. AOKP and CM both have an out of the box clock of 1.8 Ghz.
tune it down to 1.3 or 1.1. issue gone.

I feel like I shouldn't be complaining, and that it's not "overheating" but it's getting warm. I'm used to my SGS1 which runs ice cold whatever I do.
I just underclocked it, but I don't even feel the difference. I'm now running the new ParanoidAndroid with the custom kernel recommended in here. It has all the tweaking tools necessary.
Happened even on stock ROM
Mine runs a bit warm too. It is warm to the point where is gets uncomfortable to keep in my pocket at times and as far as I know it is doing "nothing". It will be fine, then I check an email or G+ notification then it goes crazy.
One commenter suggested going back to stock but mine has been doing the same thing since then, it just seem a bit more regular for the last few days. I am now in KyanROM 1.3. I am going to give that po.wer save thing a shot over the next day or so and let you guys know how that goes.
Use setcpu load up the setcpu widget and tell up what tempature your phone is
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
I notcied it is overheating when it's on LTE and the battery drain fast. I turned LTE off and I am using 4g or wifi and i don't have this problem
I noticed my phone started connecting to LTE since this week too but my overheating problem started long before that. What I noticed though is that the battery also started to drain a lot faster when it started. For the battery drain, I am thinking it is either that LTE thing or a rouge app trying access my GPS a lot since the icon keeps popping up more and more in the notification bar "searching". For now I have disabled LTE and GPS until I have time to investigate them.
By the way, I tried using PowerSave, as someone suggested to help with the overheating, but it screwed up how some of my emails are displayed so I turned it off.
