I just picked up the UK galaxy nexus and am in love! I love this phone! Coming from its predecessor, the nexus s, I'm amazed at the jump in overall performance and data speeds. Everything is buttery smooth, especially its GPS locking (something that lacked on the nexus s).
However, being a frequent flasher of new goodies in the development section, it has led me to ask what roms are worth installing. Stock feels impressively stable and quick. Battery life seems promising at this point but further testing would have to be done to be completely sure. Is there anything missing from the new roms today that stock just doesn't hold up to?
Any input is welcomed! Thanks.

You should take a look at aokp m5. Great customizing options, good performance and stable as Stock rom. I use it with Lean Kernel and battery life is also very good.
I also tried Gummy rom which was very good too but has less options than aokp.

Start off with aokp, its the go to rom. Then maybe paradigm next if you're not happy.
What's aokp got that has the edge over others (ie stock)
Is there an app for led control? Free flow has weird permissions that it asks for so I'm hesitant to use that.

Uh. Yeah it does. It's been around for a LONG time and a lot of people using a GN uses that app. The app is developed by a professional app development group, why would they make malicious apps?
You're asking for a app to customize your LED. In order for that to happen, the app must have all those permissions to know when to light your LED in that specific color that you set.

Not naive at all. As long as a app has popularity around the Android community then I'm fine with it. If it's a new app with no ratings or not listed on any websites, I'll look into it some more.
If you're being this paranoid then you should be paranoid about choosing a ROM and kernel because it may contain malicious code in it to steal all your info

It is being absolutely naive. Your reasons for trusting an app is completely base on public perception. Just because the census likes the app doesn't prove its safe.

Look at the permissions. They go with the app, it all makes sense. You want a app to perform checks on your phone. If that action is there, then it'll light up the LED in that particular color. It's obvious that you want a app to do a lot, in order to accomplish that you'll have to give permissions to that app.
If it's such a problem then don't install it. But if you want to customize your LED you WILL need to give access. And since you're flashing ROMs and all that, you're giving apps ROOT access. Are you going to question a app requesting root now? what about kernels and ROMs?
Someone uploads a radio, and so forth. When you flash ROMs, Kernels, etc it's a risk taker. Same thing with apps. Same thing with computers in general, same thing with life. Life is filled with risks and possible malicious attacks.
What's the fun in it when you're paranoid about every single little thing? Nothing. It's quite obvious that Light Flow LED is a app that ISN'T MALICIOUS as well as Google incorporated security measures to make sure apps being uploaded to the play store aren't malicious.
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2012/02/android-and-security.html
Not to mention Android is built on LINUX. There are viruses/malicious stuff on Linux but it's rare. Most malicious stuff come from third-party markets / downloaded APKs from unknown sources. Not from the Play Store, if it is on there then it will surely be removed.
If you're worried about permissions and all that of a particular party taking youre data? .. then that brings up the case of Google taking all your data for research and the whole debate of "privacy and Google."

It's not a opinion. It's actually a fact. I even included a blog post from Google itself in regards to a sandbox with apps.
No, there is no way you can control your LED without giving it massive amounts of permissions. It's like saying you want a contractor to do several fixes around the house but yet you won't give them permission to be in your house to do the fix.
It's impossible for a app to control your LED and have it function properly because in order for the LED to come up. It needs permission to CHECK the state of your phone to do the LED actions. Otherwise, the LED would just be popping up randomly for no reason or LED wouldn't come up at all.
I don't get how this concept is hard to grasp. Maybe when CM incorporates "disabling permissions from a app" will make you happier. This was in CM7.

Maybee an idea...
I recently discovered an app called Feep.
You can choose between 3 widgets in different sizes.
One is a 4x4 widget that is fully customizable
Its a really nice way to keep an eye on Facebook.
And... it's free without adds!
As an optional why not?
So lets hope there is some one manage to port it to work with cm7

I know Voodoo color was in, then out of the question for the Epic on CM9 Builds, as many seem to have different tints, etc. But power to the community, your voices are what count. If Acer got a thread going with actual results demanding the MDNIE be turned back on, then by all means, might as well ask everyone if you want Voodoo Color Back In.
CM9 Kernel is "supposed" to be the recommended Kernel that all CM9 Devs recommend you stick to, and although it is all nice and dandy, Voodoo Color has been a gift from above when used with my phone, the green tint is GONE. It's not a rant, or a bash, but one could say, just flash ShadowKernel, made by bbelos. Which by the way is doing a fantastic job on 3.XX kernel for us.
I don't want to make a billion choices for answers so I'll keep the options simple for it to be accurately tallied.
I really hope it doesn't get put in the stock kernel. There's just as many people who absolutely hate voodoo color as there are that absolutely love it. If it gets put in by default those of us who hate it are **** out of luck. People who love it are not as there always seems to be at least one custom kernel, if not all of the custom kernels, that include it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
It's better to have it.
If they include it, those who do NOT like it can go back to their green tinted screens with washed out colors.. by using the free Voodoo Control App.
As opposed to if they don't include it, then we don't even have the OPTION on the "recommended" stock kernel, thus forcing users to switch to Kanged Kernels.
I for one love it, put it back in. +1

I have no green tint with stock. I only ever get a green flash with voodoo color and the only way around it is to set the gammas to a level I honestly think looks horrid. Not to mention the fact that if I live with the green flash it still doesn't look at good to me as stock. Maybe everyone's eyes are different, but once voodoo color is even introduced, there is absolutely no way to ever get it to look like stock again, which is what the other half of us actually like. With it being a mostly 50/50 vote as seen in the past, I don't think it would be fair to refuse us who hate voodoo any choice in the matter. There are no custom kernel choices without it. Again, once voodoo color is introduced it never looks the same no matter what you set the values to.

Imo cm9 for our Epic's should remain the same as cm9 for any other device. If people want things included that the main cm developers haven't chosen to include in cm itself upstream then they should be the one's to use an alternative, not those of us who just want a stock cm9 experience.

There's quite a few things that are device-specific that aren't included in upstream, which is why we have our own team.
I do agree though, I wouldn't want to blanket cover everyone.. perhaps an option to toggle it "on" or "off" under display settings would be good.

Yeah.. it should be possible, it's probably as simple as creating a class in the source code responsible for simply enabling /disabling the code for voodoo color. Somewhat similar to HTC's S-ON/OFF except we aren't messing with partitions, locking or unlocking them. (You get where I'm going with this, a simple flag "on/off")
Since it's in kernel, I too see this being a reboot for changes to take effect. I just hope a CM Dev has seen this poll already, if so please do share or PM devs on what you think.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I dont use it much, but would liek to have it as a feature.
I would like it even better if there was an on/off toggle
Bump with a yes (can't see the poll)
Indeed. I need it. The colors just look so scratchy and pale without it. And I need the voodoo sound as well. If the stock CM kernel had voodoo sound and color I wouldn't flash another kernel.
If they really prefer users stick with the stock kernel, then make one that has what we want. Right?

They perfer if your going to help debug the rom to run stock... otherwise they could care less what kernel/mod/theme you flash... I love voodoo color, but not for stock cm9... its supposed to be stock and it should be kept that way... that said I will continue to flash a kernel with voodoo sound and color support... cm9 will probably never have voodoo color by default, so just enjoy the kernels that do have it...
I see your point

Oh, if it could be an option I could care less. I just want the choice of stock because I can't stand looking at my screen with voodoo or deal with "green screens". Hell if voodoo could be reworked so there isn't a green screen at "any" values and there was actually a value set that was identical to stock again, wouldn't care.

Asking for a useless "feature", someone suggested lightflow, but you wanted to use native rom stuff, right?
Here's my thought to you: educate yourself, search before you post (instead of cluttering up the forum), learn how to code java/c++, set up a build env, hack the source. DIY. Use suggested alternatives, search around for other possibilities, get your hands dirty.
This is not Blackberry.

Well as the title say I need some testers. I'm developing an app which one for now works with, Galaxy Nexus Maguro, but I need some Toro and Toroplus testers. (Since my nexus is maguro and I can't try it) also if any of you have a SGS3 I will appreciate if you test it as well since it suppose to work with the SGS3.
What you need
Samsung Galaxy Nexus rooted and/or Samsung Galaxy S3 rooted.
What you need to do
Simple, just start the app (App Test) you will see a text that says: ----Notifications---- and under that text other text that says TEST Notification.
1. You need to see a toggle button at the right of the second text.
2. When you turn on the toggle you have to see a notification that says: Notification ONLINE
3. When you turn off the toggle the notification should be clear.
What if I don't see something about the 3 points above?
Post what you see, and tell me what the Toast message says. I will see and try to fix it.
PLEASE POST IF IT WORKS AND IF IT DOESN'T

wow is amazing how people trust so little in other person... the root access is to read if a file exist... then returns access to the toggle button to see the toast. So if the user don't know the phone info it can give it to me easy so I know in what device it works...

??? If I doesn't why am I posting it here?
As a developer you should already know that giving root access to an app, of which its purposes are unknown, can be dangerous. The paranoia normal users (like me) have is not unfounded. That being said, I'm not trying to accuse you of anything at all. It's just that slightly more clarification would be appreciated before you ask for someone to install apps that request for root rights.
// edit: Oh, and I'll be available if you need more maguro devices for testing.
OP you do realize that you've posted this in the wrong section.. do you?
There is a whole seperate section for apps/games in xda.
Best Regards.

Sounds to me like op is trying to start working on something and is requesting testers so can see what works and what doesnt one step at a time instead of finishing the whole thing and having to go back thru a bunch of crap to track down the offending code. Come on guys...help a guy out. Jeez!
Well I'm almost sure that this piece of the code works, just need a toro report.
Thank you all for your feedback, the app can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32856969#post32856969
See guys! Jeez! Give the guy enough flack?
*Step Away From The Toolkit And NoROM Gets Hurt*
Okay, so I've had i317 for about 4 months now, its a great phone. I would just love to see an ics 4.0.4 rom, be it stock or aosp,, aokp, etc for this device. The reason being is that there are alot of apps I used to use, such as UMA and a few others I cannot remember as of right now. Forgive me if this isn't the correct area to post the question lol. But can anyone possibly help me with my issue I'm having? A. ort or something would be ideal if possible.
On a side note: I have some prior knowledge with developing roms and getting them to work fully and such, like betas alphas and what not. just haven't gave much thought as to post on the forum untill now. So I'm not completely of the noob calibur so to speak.
Lastly, my final question, would anyone be interested in deving up a 100% pure custom 4.3 rom that is completely Pokemon themed right down to the contacts and dialer. I will include more detail upon request, also one that isn't 10.1 based or cm in general. The reason I say non cm based is because volume+ sound boost breaks the speaker and crackles pretty badly, and i am partialy deaf so the apk is much needed. Any help would be be very appreciated and id be eternally greatful.

It's not going to happen. The note 2 was shipped with 4.1.1 (or higher) so there is no 4.0 source for devs to work with.
Also, since pretty much every AOSP rom uses the CM Theme Manager, it's not that common to see themed roms (there are exceptions, but they tend to be lightly themed). Either find a CM theme to your liking or learn to theme your rom.
Sorry my friend...
You aren't the only one wanting it...
I'd even take a nice CM6 ROM for this device...
But as mentioned... It's just a dream... g

Okay, well shoot. Could you at least tell me that the possibility to get an apk to adapt and work on a newer rom is possible? I ask this because the main reason for me asking a dream question is simply that I love the ultimate mobile armor apk. it is the best privacy apk ever thought of. It was removed for reasons unknown. Back when I had my S3 and I717, it worked on both. Sadly it will not stick on the rooms I run currently. (Cleanrom 5.0, lionrom 2.1, etc.) Could the scripts and such be altered somehow for it to be compatible? On the S3 I always ran cm10 and its stick. Any thoughts, ideas and suggestions that are helpful and or leading to an apk exactly similar to ultimate mobile armour would be greatly appreciated.

Apk alteration is very possible ...
The trick is finding a dev to work it out ...and since apps are owned by their respective creators ...you would need permission from him/her to use or modify the code...
And I've always said it ...
A few emails and pm's go a long way..
Hit up the dev and see what you can learn ...g

Ive looked and searched and I've found nothing from the devs of this apk. Its been completely stricken from the web. What are my other options here as far as these apk Modding concerns go? I've found nothing for secure mobile sadly.
I see...
That being said ...it appears the app has been killed off for legal reasons ??
And lookout mobile is inferior how ??
Most of these security apps are monitored via 3rd party in addition to device activity ...
So it stands to reason that if your service for the apk is dead....it won't work anyway..
Best advice...pick an alternate and move forward....
Lookout and AVG are both exceptional ...and many others are available ..
Norton or Mccaffe possibly too...
Happy hunting ...and sorry I couldn't be of more help...g
