Development so far on our beloved One X. Your opinions - HTC One X

Basically as the title of the thread says. How do you guys feel so far in regarding the development of the phone?
Do you guys think we shall be seeing more devs coming to us and building fantastic roms? What in regards when the kernel source drops? Or do you feel that the S3 will get the most development?
I for one i am really happy with how things have started. From reading our devs are the best in the business from the HTC side and we have some of the big names. But are more going to come or what would you guys like to see?
Want to say many thanks for our good devs in making our device better and i just hope the development carries on and we have more devs coming to us even though the S3 is out as well.
What you guys think?

I've got Insertcoin, that's all I need!
In all seriousness, once the kernel source drops, I'm sure show-p and faux123 will be all over it. I very much look forward to that!

Considering the very short amount of time the phone has been available to the public, I don't think we could ask for more!

As I said when I first got this phone, the devs we have here are a who's who of my favourites dating back to the Tytn II: LeeDroid, Baad, monx, VillianRom, Core Droid, Mike1986.... also some promising 'new' devs such as J4n87.
All is looking well.

Also really happy so far, but I'm curious about the kernel source. How long does HTC tend to wait until they release it? Can we expect it within a few weeks or are we talking months? Or might they never release it? :O
Also, does anyone know exactly what they're waiting for? Ie, why didn't they release it simultaneously with the phone?
Cheers!

Not sure how long it would take for them to release it my friend. Would of thought it would of been with the release of the phone but we can only hope like in a few weeks..
And yeah i am more than happy with the development so far. Many big time players in our forums. Just feel once the source drops then kernels will drop as well..Thanks guys for your opinions so far.. Do you guys feel that we might see AOSP roms one day?

I`m sure Lee said in his thread that they had 90 days to release the source..i hope it comes sooner than that so the devs can rip it apart and build a better kernel.

From my understanding there's still a lot of unknowns surrounding the kernel and the proprietary drivers, not to mention s-off. I'm confident the devs are all over it like a cheap suit but HTC have done some things differently with the One series which has resulted in some intense chin stroking.
I think once these issues have been overcome (and it will be, its a when not an if) we'll see a lot more community development.
Personally I can't wait to run CyanogenMod on this beast.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the One X isn't running on a Full ICS kernel, It's a Gingerbread Kernel of sorts right?
(due to the first time using Tegra 3?)
If so, my theory would be that they're working on a Full ICS kernel and then releasing the source.
Of course, I'm a noob and I could be talking balls.

you are probably right..was reading it on another thread the same thing..kinda odd if you ask me though for them to do that...we can only wait and see

My One X is the first Android I have ever had and I am new to the whole development and custom ROM community. I have nothing to compare it to but what I have seen is quite amazing.
There is plenty of custom roms already, mike is pushing new versions of he's amazing rom every other week, and he also announced that they will be working together with faux to improve our one x experience once the kernel source is available. And what I have read about faux, i am pretty happy about the future of my One X

The twilight years are offering fine fruits....2.3 with sens is getting there, and an miui port..
my device holds optimism, no redundancy just yet
I do not think the Hero is dead. There are still actively maintained ROMs for the Hero.
CM for Hero is dormant because it is lacking a maintainer, nothing more.
It now becomes more important for the active maintainers of the Hero ROMs to contribute their Hero-specific patches back upstream to Cyanogen. Or hopefully one of maintainers of the other ROMs steps up to take over the maintenance of CM for Hero.
I have a 2.2 Rom thats stable and smooth and honestly I would like to see devs continue to work on our devices but I personnally do not see a need for it...surely one or two nice updates are always nice to have around but I think software wise we are at the end of what the hero can handle anyways (though I am not an expert at all)
Funny that everyone thinks its over for the Hero. The CM6 Dev was crap to. But it was easier since there where way less starter problems. But Ninpo was the one who fixed a lot of stuff for that. And send it upstream to CM. Not Loxdev or someone else. ATM we dont have any dev that is sending stuff upstream.
Feeyo fixed a lot. But he is not sending it, I must say I Agree in some points with him. Elelinux his build is still with the annoying bug so that is a no go, and as far as I know not really sending stuff their way.
In short the hero dev is ran, and has been ran a long time from the individuall devs for a long time.

I have no idea. Samsung seems like a logical choice because it have good specs and does seem like its not impossible to unlock it Still I find that the Samsung quality is at least one level down from HTC.... But HTC is bootloader locking their newer devices.
So it really is a tough call. Anyway don't have the money for a new device now anyway, so for now I'll stick to the good old hero

Want to remind you..

Hey guys,
As you have probably noticed, the development at the desire has quite "stopped"
Many devs are really "busy" and others have abandoned the desire.
The ONLY working dev is Coolexe or MichaelM.
I personally think it's time to move on to a next device.
What you guys think?
Will there come more desire devs? or will this be the "end"?
Bout kernels: Once they told us, when open source kernel is released, the desire will be muchhhhh better, but I personally think there hasn't change much!
Kernels are still not as they should be, 1 kernel got lockscreen lag or batt drain, others freeze. Know what imsaying?
I'm not saying the devs are that bad, but this is the end to me I think.

ooooh 1 whole month ago. Actually I am working on a build now but quality is more important to me than getting out updates every 2 days.
But to say there are only 2 devs working on the desire is completely wrong and I find your posts not only offensive but also inaccurate and counter productive.
Edit> Also forgot to mention Droidzone and Sibere, then all the kernel devs. not all devs build roms.
And Kali- is a dev,. he doesn't just "post builds" if you look at his git hub you can see his commits,.
Worst thread ever!
Well I see it more dimensional:
1. Sense: it seems like really slowed down a bit, but on the other hand Sense 3.5 was available very quickly. Dridzone is also contributing here (piety he resists newer Sense for now).
2. ASOP: CM7 + bunch of other ROMs - well CM is stable, rest is fluctuating (for me it is only CM that seems interesting)
3. MIUI: active
Actually now is the time to wait for ICS sourcecode to enable further milestone. I guess Sense will decrease in popularity with ICS based CM9 released. For me the only thing thet stops me from CM7 as daily are Exchange ActiveSync issues.
Piety that for few days now both Coolexe and michelm_007 remain silent. Anyway DHD seems to be the main driver of HTC community - Desire seems to rather follow, not drive progress (in matter of new sense porting). Tha is basically due to small internal memory that is the main step to consider when porting some new ROMS. The speed issue due to obsolete platform (CPU/GPU) is also stronger here from DHD, so it really is the fade out period for the Sense on Desire. Next Sense will most likely be even more difficult to be run smoothly...
Sense will gain popularity again when Sense 4.0 on top of Android 4.0 D) will be released.
Dont see that running on the trusty Desire though
RootSU,
I didn't want to be rude,
But I think you understand that this desire community isn't how its supposed to be.
You have to agree that the BEST devs abonded, like baadnewz, robocik, leedroid (comes back)
It's not completely dead but its silent here in the rom section.
Hope you understand my point
I understand that the desire is phasing out. I only debate the fact that there are only 2 active devs. I just think you're exaggerating the situation, be that knowingly or otherwise.

isnt it logical that people move on to new devices, including the devs? no point stating the obvious in a thread here... just stick with whats left of the desire community, start developing yourself or abandon ship and go for a newer device... you should at least be thankful for all that has been done for our awesome device so far...
*note* im not bashing you in any way, its just that i think the way you wrote the OP is pointless. you can move on to a Nexus device where the development doesnt stop till the devs faint from working overtime...

This. I even flashed AuraxTSense again for a brief period before changing ship to aosp because of this.
It is only natural that people continue developing elsewhere, depending on where they upgraded. You can't expect them to support old device like you can't expect from HTC. Neither party involved has superhuman abilities, so I can't say anything but great thanks for making Desire more pleasurable to use than it already was.
The thing that concerns me are the reasons both Neophyte and AdamG went. Rapid deterioration of community and quality of information available in the period of last 12 months. Both these great devs went explicitly because of that (one for good and one to his respective forum).

[Q] Is the DHD Dev threads dying

I've been noticing a lot of ROM's not updating. And recently the ICS port from the RCMix Sensation has been stopped and closed. Is their still hope, or is it time to upgrade to a newer phone.
Not sure what you consider alot, but I.just glanced in the Dev section and quite a few have had updates of within the past two weeks(I counted 10 +). That seems pretty active to me
Plus just because a rom hasn't been updated recently doesn't mean its not being worked on

Not updating doesnt mean that they (devs) are not working anymore, It means that their ROM doesnt have any bugs or problems and is stable and doesnt require any changes.
Thats what most of the ROM devs will say.
Hmmm a question thread that was not posted in the Q&A forum?
Ill move it this time
You'd consider buying a new phone just because (some) threads on a forum aren't experiencing a massive amount of traffic in a holiday period?

It only dies if people allow it. It has become far to common that people wait for others do it instead of learning to do it themselfs. If you want something cool and new dig in and make something new. That is the point of a development forum to help others learn and share tips. Developers are not special. They just have the drive to make their device theirs.
I had another read of the op, like the ics sense is coming back, I've been working on it and other things, in a way dhd is dying and in a way it isnt if that makes sense, alot of new devices gets released n when that happens everyone usually wants something new and cool, devs want to develop on a newer phone see what it can handle performance wise etc
If I'm still here when sense 4.0 drops then yeah I'll most likely be bringing it to DHD first (as thats the phone I have)

Atrix got CM9 ICS ROM!!

Yup, the Atrix 4G, the phone I was previously on, which my mom is currently using, just got a CM9 ICS ROM -_-;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445052
We need to start moving and trying to get ICS on the Nitro. Even the Rezound also got AOSP ICS port, albeit some things still borked.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-rezound-gets-pure-aosp-ice-cream-sandwich-port/
Despite all the talk of starting slow with some improvement ROMs and maybe a CM7, I hate to say this, but we need to get either CM9 or ICS, or at least some kind of progress towards it. Every phone out there, old and new, are getting ICS or CM9 infused into them, I don't believe we can't do so with ours. We will spark much more interest in people and members here and maybe even more Devs if we bring ICS to the table. What do you guys/gals think?
I agree.
This is my first Android device and I really enjoy it a lot, thus I hope this phone can get a lively community of mods, roms, etc. At the same time, the SGSII LTE HD will be launching on AT&T soon, and I think that in order for this community to thrive we need ICS before this launch. The SGSII LTE HD is just about equal to the Nitro HD as far as specs are concerned, many who demand 720p and LTE will have the choice between the Samsung and the LG. Due to reputation, Samsung will undoubtedly outsell the Nitro.
I write this not to be **** and try to boss around people who donate their time and receive no more than some meaningless "Thanks" count. I am very appreciative that we have people like Bytecode, Kernelpanic, Cloudraker, and Malnilliom. (sorry if I left some people out, these guys just came to mind)
Lastly, does anyone know where to get guides on doing things like "ROM-cooking" and CM ports. Like I said, this is my first Android phone and I really don't know where to begin looking for this kind of information.

Yeah, I didn't even know about the Skyrocket HD until someone mentioned it here on our thread, and I immediately thought to myself, "Aww F*** we are screwed now". I think it's a **** move by AT&T to release their "flagship" phone under LG and then less than a month later announce the Skyrocket HD. Sorry to say this, had I known they were gonna release the Skyrocket HD, I would've waited for it over the Nitro. But alas, what's done is done, there's no need to cry over spilled milk, the best thing to do is to move on and prove we have the better phone than Samsung does. Anyways, I never was a fan of Samsung Phones since they started making phones. I find they always look..cheap

In that time span a cwm has been developed and 2+ roms with atleast one more announced on the mainpage so someone here at xda seems to think that warrants front page headlines so I am trustin their judgement as well as acknowledging the hard work devs have already accomplished.

WE should not even be thinking about sense/CM9 roms on here for awhile.
Quite frankly, I don't think CM will ever get around to making a ROM for this phone.
CM9 is being ported to the Lag Nitro by Ricardo Cerqueira. Head out to his Google+ to see what he's done.

Yup, we've known that for the past couple of weeks gerax thanks for spreading the word though. it's keeping the hopes alive for this phone

Doesn't seem to be much development for this phone?

Correct me if I'm wrong but there doesn't seem to be much development for this phone, at least not currently. It seems there's only a couple roms that are maintained regularly and then there are a bunch of ports that aren't regularly updated or maintained. Coming from the razr it seemed there were new roms or updates to roms every few days and that was on a locked bootloader. Anyone have some insight to share? I'm just curious is all, nothing against any of the devs. I appreciate any and all work put forward.

This is a dead end phone kind of..
those who got it, got it cos they were waiting for it for a long time (me)
or it came out when they needed a new phone (most the rest)
The HTC One Maxx IS coming.
that's a fact.
and this phone was not enough to move HTC DNA phone ppl to this phone, DNA has a bigger screen, some won't change just because of that..
also most on DNA are waiting for the HTC One Maxx, personally I don't see how a 6 inch phone will fit in your pocket and is just too much, many ppl are waiting for it and this phone is much to the liking of how the htc inc4 threads went down, which is bad.
this will be better, but because of that one maxx coming, not too many jumped on this bandwagon. and a finger scanner? really?
you have that many OTHER people using your phone you need a finger scanner.. tisk tisk HTC, time to jump on elevate and ask wth they were thinking lmao

Those are some good points, I thought with the popularity of this phone that even on verizon there were bound to be more developers though but maybe not. As far as the maxx goes I'm not much of a fan, it seems they could have put much more thought into it than they did..

HTC hasn't even release the kernel sources for this phone yet.

No, there weren't. There were simply people taking stuff from this and that roms, tweaking some settings to their liking and posting the result as a rom.
There are actually only a limited number of original roms, because those take a lot of work to make, and there are teams of people maintaining them. These roms usually support most of the popular devices out there, so you aren't really missing anything. You can find a list of those here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_custom_Android_firmwares

Well the same can be said of all phones, since there's _always_ going to be a better phone coming right around the corner...

I do agree, but the HTC Inc4 was a special case.
That forum DIED..
even with S-OFF..
Coming from a DNA to the One just because I got the dna to hold me over until I was able to get the One. While not a huge difference, I like the one more.

I gotta tell you though, I like this hardware. GPS locks almost instanly (S3 was a constant headache, and I had 3 of them) Sound is awesome (I mean, its a phone, but come on!), Heavy metal, attractive. Out of the box the S3 was a slicker UI, but would not stand any physical abuse, and I wear mine on my hip in a Siedio holster. I have this One customized now and it is almost there. Excellent puzzle, keeps me busy.

Do they always release source eventually? I'm guessing this would lead to development of custom kernels and things of that nature?
I also think xposed framework has eliminated some of the advantages of custom ROMs. Android tweaking and hacking is evolving. SENSE ROM development is growing though, and we have most of the major AOSP ROMs as well.

Well by distributing the Linux kernel on their phone they are legally compelled by the GPLv2 to make the corresponding source code available. Not even "eventually", but "immediately". Technically however, what the GPL does _not_ dictate is the _venue_ in which they release the source. What that means is that they _aren't_ compelled to put the source code up on the Internet for the public to download. They can choose to just send the source code, by email, cd, or whatever, to those who ask for it, and that would make them in compliance with the GPL. Distributing the source on htcdev.com is just their choice of doing things.
Short answer: yes.

Yes. People have already adapted kernels from other versions of m7 and make them run on the m7vzw. But without HTC's own source as a starting point it's hard to really get a stable kernel.
If you read through the general HTC One development forums it sounds like there are several popular roms waiting on 4.3 to release a VZW version. For instance, ViperOne is for sure coming. Whether they're waiting on 4.3 or not is beyond me, but it is coming.

I was just wondering that today. But then again i do really enjoy the stock. With root for adblock/teether and no blink feed its almost perfect for me. But, i am keeping my toes crossed anyway!!!
:victory:
It is 4.3 that they're waiting for, since all other models have it already. Also, all non-verizon models were 4.1, not 4.2, so we're kind of in Limbo here.
I'm running the Slim ROM for the HTC One, which is superb, and it's 4.3.1.

Something i don't understand is why people don't like BlinkFeed? I find it very useful.

Development will increase when 4.3 drops and the 4.2 source code. There are private projects going on for sure that are waiting on either 4.3 or source... and also porting attempts...just haven't been made public yet.

Just hoping people keep developing, I'll be using it for two more years.
I will say that after a few hours with my new One, huge improvement over the DNA in every way

This thread question has popped up a few times, including by me. We may get a few more roms, but I agree with Andy that this phone is kind of a "dead end"..
I am just really happy Andy is here and making us a nice rom because w/out him, this would be a sad phone for custom roms.
What sort of "development" are you looking for? Maybe I've fallen out of the flash addiction, but I don't see the need for a bajillion and one ROMS to choose from with a tweak here or there. I'm glad that there is consolidation in feature sets that make only a few necessary. That said, it would be nice to have a Franco-Kernel equivalent and an associated app to easily apply Kernel settings.
Also, although this is my first HTC phone, I think Sense is really good and I actually prefer it (minus blinkfeed, admittedly) to stock android. I'm willing to bet there are others out there who feel that way too.
